No matter where you are in the world we should all exercise caution, especially when we are out by ourselves. This is my story of when I was followed home, and the whole time my mind was racing trying to remember everything I've been taught before to stay safe. In Korea, convenience stores are considered safe places where you can hang out in case something is happening to you. They are open 24/7, and you can ask the worker for help. If you have any tips to stay safe, share them in the comments below!

When a guy is being creepy, please girls, stop being afraid to "not be nice". Creeps prey on that. And when you're in such a situation, it's not about being nice but getting out of it. Don't be afraid to walk away. Carry pepper spray in your hand! Scream loudly. Don't be afraid to cause a ruckus and go into a shop and tell them someone is harassing you.

I think this works in Korea and most countries where people can't carry guns. In the US if they're nutty and impulsive enough they may just shoot you.

I had kind of a similar experience. It was 2am in Hongdae and I decided that I didn't want to go clubbing with my friends, so I walked home by myself. Lo and behold, some creep started following me. Luckily, I noticed him and sat down and tried to call someone. He went to sit down next to me, and I have never sprinted so fast in my entire life. Maybe he didn't have malicious intent but it couldn't have led to anything good. I hate to think of what might have happened if I hadn't been alert and mostly sober. Lesson learned: no where in the world is safe for a young woman to walk home alone at 2am.

Whenever I had such a thing happen in Korea (and sadly it happened several times), I told the nut that my husband was waiting for me. Of course, I then got asked why I wasn’t wearing a wedding ring, and I just said I don’t wear jewellery. It worked every time - the nut just disappeared. However, one night, a man broke into my room at 3am. That’s another story, but it did scare the crap out of me, and I ‘escaped’ by shouting the word ‘police’ at the top of my voice. I woke someone up five floors below who came to help me.

@pink girl Yeah, but at least I got away unharmed. There was a really disturbing documentary posted on YT not long ago by a news network such as ABC or CBC (I can't remember who) that featured 3 westerners who were date raped in Korea, and suffered severe trauma. The rapists were all non-Koreans, but it serves as a reminder not to be off guard around anyone you don't know when away from home.

Girls, a tip for you; when you keep answering the person, from the outside you might look like two people knowing each other or a couple maybe just having a fight. That might be one of the reasons nobody tried to help you. Because him touching on your forehead and you keep answering him, even if you look agitated might really look like a couple just having a bad night or just like a girl getting mad at her boyfriend. The people in the convenience store don't know the full story, so please don't be kind to these kind of men and don't answer them.

See you don't get the point. Stop pinning this on the girl. She clearly stated that she was avoiding him, running in circles to get away from him, as she waited for the taxi. He literally tailed her. Ya'll would have a problem even if she didn't answer him tbh.
@bettykim7008
@bettykim7008 4 года назад
@@dreyl2522 I have no intentions on "pinning the girl". She didn't do anything wrong and made her stance clear, but, after living with korean people for like 3 years, I have learned that they have a very different way of perceiving some things, especially aboout flirting. I believe its something about culture difference but it is very schocking. I had some very first hand experience (can tell if you want but its a long story) and I was literry schocked how they perceive things and the way they think. It is really difficult to understand from a westerner point of wiev. I was just trying to warn people about this different mindset so that they can prepare themselves or understand some things better. I was so angry when I listened to her story as a fellow female. This kind assholes are everywhere and this kind of things happen everywhere, unfortunately. I wasn't trying to pin the girl, but instead was trying to say more like "don't wait for help, go directly ask for it, and don't be scared to be rude". It will be best to learn how to say some basic sentences like "someone is following me, please help" in Korean which will help to communicate with the police in an emergency call as well. Still, I wanted to clarify the reason why nobody might not helped since I had very beautiful experiences with Korean people too, especially after learning Korean, and saw that they are actually very sweet and helpful once you get over language barrier.

Betty Kim I get your point but as @khosa.t pointed out, there is honestly no excuse to justify this sort of dismissive attitude. As a girl who’s been harassed multiple times, I can tell you, ITS NEVER BEEN EASY TO stand up against perverts especially when you’re shit scared to the point, you’re choking on your own scream. Korea is a beautiful place, nonetheless. What were highlighting here is not hate for the country but voicing the problems which plague a country internally but are not addressed adequately
@AP-jz1eh
@AP-jz1eh 4 года назад
Exactly. This honestly is almost even a "cultural" thing now, many korean girls do this - ignore the guy, ESPECIALLY if you're being spoken to when you are alone, at night, etc. It is NOT the time and place for a guy to be talking to you and you have every right to flat out IGNORE them. When i lived in korea, i had this happen to me so many times (and i was underage) and i had to ignore all the guys who tried to speak to me. If they ask me a question, ignore. if they follow me, ignore and try to get to a safe place. if you talk back to them they will never stop. they take advantage of you if you seem nice and tame. So i just had to flat out ignore any guys who tried to talk to me and if they wouldnt stop, id tell them to GO AWAY. I had to fix this habit when i moved to germany. I had developed a habit of ignoring guys when they approached me, which was essential in korea but in germany i started being perceived as "snobby" and "rude", "stuck up" and i realized i could and should stop ignoring guys who are actually nice and just trying to get my number, and that a nice "no thank you" usually totally works for guys in germany

Forienger girls are sex objects to the Korean guys: Anybody have been seen the American or European porn stars from their childhood. So korean guys make opinion that these brown skin girls are easy for sex. They are right in some extent as they can easily find Foriegner girls for night stand as well. We can see so many blue eyes with brown skin European girls standing in night life street waiting for some random korean guys to come and ask for drink 🍸. So they directly ask those girls for night stand and consequently they get plenty of girls for night stand easily. I saw many single European girls trying to give attention on korean guys but interestingly 90% korean guys have korean girlfriends 😄. Just for last year, 93 European and American girls submitted complain in police that a korean male friends did sex with them forcefully without using condom. So imagine how many girls must be there who didn't submit complaints as their korean friends used condom during sex 😅 or some of them didn't want to expose them while submitting police complaints. The tragedy is that at some points of their life, all these victims were became a fan of K-pop, K-drama actors, BTS and so many fictional women like-men. Consequently, they tried to find korean boyfriend and faced these type of problems. Korean guys think foreign girls as sex toy. Because these korean fans foreign girls tell very funny stories to police. Like, the korean guy was my friend, we used to go to club and bar together, amd used to sleep together. But later the korean guy fucked me without condom hahahhaha. Police really laugh on these stupid girls. Police just say he is your bf, you used to be together what can Police do? 🤣 ofcource anyone will fuck you if you give so much free hand.

I lived in Korea for awhile and ended up going to busan for like two weeks with a friend. we were out in front of the CU kinda near Thursday party and this guy came up to us talking about how pretty I was etc. he was nice tho wasn’t weird or anything so we all hung out together for the night! it became like 7am and we decided to go back home he asked if he could walk us home n I’m like sure! he wasn’t weird and was so sweet. but we go to sit in McDonald’s for some ice cream or something I can’t remember what we got but this korean guy comes up to me and starts talking rEALLY fast korean. and mind u my korean wasn’t that good so I had no clue what he was saying and the guy we had met just tried shooing him away but he wouldn’t leave. it seemed as tho the guy who came up to us in McDonald’s had legit a weird obsession with me. anyways we start walking home and he’s still following us and the sweet guy said we should sit here for a bit to get him off our back so he didn’t know where we were staying. anyways he kept coming up to us but I kept saying I’m not interested!! he was being really freaky. and so the nice guy told me he was saying he wanted to have sex with me 🤢 and wouldn’t stop trying to and saying I am his type and to please I want to have sex with her. IM LIKE NO NO NO... anyways took us about an hr or so to get him to LEAVE. was so freaky n I remember feeling my heart drop. I’m glad I was with them.

I also was roofied by an older korean man and sexually assaulted near a bathroom stall and I remember before I passed out that there was a couple and they did nothing. and I was at a bar and a foreigner came up to me and shouted in my ear “I want to have sex with you” like damn I’ve had so many weird/bad stuff happen to me there. but if I’m being honest I’ve had a lot happen where I live now (Australia) so it didn’t really surprise me:( I also had a foreigner force himself onto me while I was sitting on the side of the road it like right in the middle of hongdae. and it’s funny because I’m going back there soon and everyone’s like 😳😳😳 why go back if all this has happened to you? the things I’ve experienced back home where I am now is a lot worse and I hate it here. the best times was when I was in korea and I know what to look out for. plus back then I was kinda reckless and just didn’t care much about my well being.

I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with that Payton :( I've had some scary experiences here too. Most recently, an older Korean man started talking to me at a bus stop. He was a bit weird but at first I was polite, then got on my bus. To my horror he followed me on the bus. Sat next to me and asked for my number/where I lived. I said "No!" a few times, pushed past him and got off at the next stop. You can't rely on Koreans to step up and help sadly. I've had many men approach me with the old "You Russian?", no I'm not, I'm a short freckly glasses wearing Irish woman! Xd Btw Ireland is safer than Korea, and people look out for others. Eventually it really wears on you, now I feel suspicious of any Korean man who talks to me. Never had a bad experience with a Korean woman.
@SquirrelThis
@SquirrelThis 4 года назад
Police have actively stated that one of the main reasons women have been able to be attacked is because they were too afraid to stop being polite and perpetrators know this. Women like to be helpful but we have also been conditioned to believe that we can't be seen as being assertive or god forbid aggressive as it's not "feminine" and this makes us vulnerable. I believe anyone at risk should take self defence classes, but we also need to become comfortable being assertive and saying enough ✋when someone crosses that line where we start to feel uncomfortable. Most importantly... practice at home pretending what to do in those situation because people with poor boundaries or poor intensions WILL step it up trying to make you feel like you've been rude to get you to back down so they can continue their harrassing. I became so good at being politely assertive that I stopped being harassed all together. I have also straight up gone and blocked guys I could tell were crossing that line with others who I could see didn't know what to do. In a better world we wouldn't have to do this but until we make those changes here, we need to be capable of protecting ourselves and each other rather than looking away or hoping someone will come to our aid. Stay safe people's xx

I just came across this video so I don't know if I'm too late to share this. I used to live in Denver. One time while I still lived in Denver, I went to an all night house party and the people were doing drugs and drinking. I was basically the only one who wasn't doing drugs or drinking. As the party went on and on people started getting lit on drugs and sloshed on alcohol. Sometime around 1ish or 2ish in the morning I was going to get a Coke to drink when some guy, who I can tell was already lit on drugs, came up to me. I wear oxygen so this guy noticed that and told me that he was a doctor. He started to put his hands all over me because he said he wanted to "examine" me. I was shocked. I didn't say anything or tell the hosts because I didn't want to make a scene but I felt so violated. I'm a male so I haven't really shared this experience except to one friend because I feel that because I'm a male I would've received a lot of judgement and crap for it. Hearing your story brought this memory up for me.

This is the reason why I won't go back to Korea even though I was born there and lived for too long. With the superficial culture where even stranger think they have a right to judge you for looks, Korea is very difficult to place to have peace of mind. I lived there by myself since very young ages with no parents so I had to come across many freaks a lot even who live my neighborhood. Especially old guys are not afraid of staring at you, touching you, and following you. But at the same time, people do not help you even though a child or people are getting hit. Korean people think family, esp parents, can hit their child so domestic abuse is a joke to them. Korea has very generous to criminals, especially to sexual predators. They went out after a few years from prison. Sex education is a myth there and etiquettes toward other genders - I had to leave a comment after I came across you vid in FB
@sybaik
@sybaik 4 года назад
What a terrible experience. Unfortunately, if you are around the Hongdae and Itaewon areas or even any of the night clubs and bars then many of the guys, either weird or ignorant or both, are there to try to pick up any young lady, preferably from abroad, since they are perceived to be more "open" to sexual advances and one-nighters. And given the prevalence in the Korean culture of the belief that if you persist even when a young woman says "no" then many times that persistence is rewarded and add to that the dating culture where women are expected to resist the initial advances of men in a form of courtship custom only adds fuel to the fire; so that, many Korean men really don't take no for an answer. If you speak Korean, then saying a few well-chosen choice words will definitely send them a clear message. A little white lie, that my boyfriend or husband is waiting for me, usually works, unless of course, he is drunk, then you may need to just get out as fast as possible. Please remember that guys are very easily stimulated by the visuals, it's just hardwired into their psychology - Google it if you don't believe me, and if you consider that on average 4% of men in any country are sociopaths and 1% are psychopaths, the best way to protect yourself is NOT to bring unwanted attention to yourself since as a foreigner you kind of already do stick out. On any given day, if you are not in the areas where guys on "hunting" mode congregate, as in the aforementioned areas, you will actually be quite safe. Be alert, wise, and stay safe!

There are creeps in Korea for sure. I"m Korean and in that case, do not be scared. be loud if you have to and always threaten to call the police. Foreigners hesitate to call the police for some reason and some of those creeps know that. In that situation, you need to tell him you will call the police and if he still harasses you, call the police (112). If you're in Seoul police will get there in minutes. There are hafty punishments for sexual harassment so just mentioning police will scare most creeps away. Also, cry out for help to other people. Don't expect people to know your situation especially late at night, so tell other people that he is harassing you and won't let you go. Those creeps are cowards, they'll never harras Korean girls because they know Korean girls will react. Law and order exist in Korea so don't hesitate to use them.

I recently travelled to Seoul solo and experienced being stalked. It was a day before my flight home. It was around Seongdong-gu area after visiting a cafe. It was between 8-9 PM. I was navigating the streets using the Naver map looking for the nearest subway to get back to my hotel. I noticed a man, like maybe in his 50s walking about 2-3 meters behind me. There are also other people walking it was an alley not so much people are passing though. I did not mind it but I really am very aware of my surroundings everywhere I go especially since I am travelling solo in a foreign country. I have been walking for about 5 minutes and I always check my back and he's still there. The other people we are walking with earlier have now took different direction. Actually I thought he was with them. And then, fewer and fewer people are on the streets as we walk, I start to suspect since everywhere I turn, he turns to. Sometimes it really gets tricky to read the direction with Navermap. Supposed to be going right, I am going left, so I was going back and forth, and every time I go back the other way, he does too, and we actually are passing by each other. We will pass by each other and after a few walks, he will also turn around. By this time, it's like he is maintaining a distance of 5 meters. By now I am almost like walking but almost running and he started to up his pace too. I actually again did a wrong turn maybe because I was already very scared. My heart is beating so fast. This time I am in a semi-panicked state. I saw a female bystander and immediately walked to her to ask for a direction since I can't process to read the map anymore and also to ask for help. And while I was talking to the bystander, I suddenly felt he was literally beside me and listening to the conversation, looking at us talking like he was with me, and it feels so weird, creepy and scary. The girl I talked to pointed me to a straight direction but it was poorly lit. She's not too fluent with English too and I had a hard time explaining the situation I am in. Then there's two girls approaching and I think to myself this would be my only chance and I immediately and literally ambushed them, like I ran and jump in front of them. I was shaking by this time, I told them, I was being followed can I come with you? Good thing they understood the situation. I did not look back to the guy but they asked me if he is the one, in a black outfit, black hat and on looking like on his 50s and I said yes. They said he is looking our way but seems to be slowly backing out. After a minute or two they said he's gone. I also looked back and he is really gone, the two girls told me to run quickly to the station as it is about just 10-15 meters away and it is just a straight path but I told them I am still afraid he's just waiting around. Then they said they will accompany me to the subway station. I was really thankful to these two girls, they are so kind and they are my hero that night. I am so thankful to them up to this day. I was very suspicious even when I rode the train looking out for him if he might have followed me there and thanks God, he was not. Seoul is a very safe city, as I have been staying and out for 2 weeks and this is the only time that I was stalked. I think it was just an opportunity for him since I am a foreigner and alone and is in a alley not too many people are passing by. I don't know what his intentions are but I am very thankful I got out of the situation. 🙏

"I was trying to be polite" that was your first mistake - and I don't blame you for it (not that any of this is in any way your fault ofc). But predatory males count on that politeness, they count on the society brainwashing women into being polite and kind no matter the horrible circumstances they find themselves in. DON'T be polite. First and foremost, thank God you are safe. I'm relieved you're ok. The "nice" thing is what gets us girls in trouble. We are blessed with a powerful female intuition, yet we disobey. There's a great book "The New Superpower for Women" by Steve Kardian and the very first point he makes is to obey your gut the second it kicks in. In investigations, every assault victim he ever interviewed always said, "I knew something was off, but I ignored it." DON'T engage the guy. BE rude from the drop. Raise your voice threateningly and say, "BACK OFF!!"

It was very brave of you to not let him follow you to your apartment sis. Plus, glad that you made it to your place safely👍🏻. I too had a similar experience, but that was in my own country. Fun fact is, it happened in the middle of the city during 7 pm to 8pm, I guess. There was this guy who spotted me from a mall as I went for shopping clothes. I still remember his peach color shirt. I didn't pay much attention to him when he was staring at me from the mall. Later I remember seeing the same face staring at me from the bus stop, in the bus, beside my seat. That's when I realised that the guy actually followed me all the way into the bus. I Could feel his eyes solely on me for that one horrifying hour. The fact that he got a pretty cute face only creeped me more. Having enough of his uncomfortable stares, I gave him a glare while in the bus, denoting him that "I can see you staring at me, so stop", but he only gave me a sickening smile, it was terrifying. Reaching my hometown, I got off the bus, so did he. As it was my hometown I knew the place pretty well, and the shopkeepers in there too. I spent like a ten minutes in one of the shop I knew with the staffs, he roamed around there and here. When his attention got diverted, I took a cab and went to my house, making sure he didn't follow me. Reaching home, when I saw my mother waiting for me at the door step, heaven knows how relieved I felt. But this usually happens in my country, stalking. I adored Korea because I heard it is safe for girls in there. Seems like girls aren't "actually" safe anywhere.

@sybaik

It really depends on the people. Koreans tend to mind their own business unless it is indubitably clear that someone is in a life-threatening situation. Some times because there isn't a Good Samaritan law in place a lot of people who have tried to help were later blamed or sued for some correlated mishap, so there is a wariness about helping strangers and foreigners in particular, especially due to the communication barrier. Domestic conflict, even when the man is being overtly abusive physically, is something that does not constitute a life-threatening situation, and given that even when someone is inflicting physical violence on another it isn't always who is the real instigator and may lead to even more misunderstanding, so Koreans stay clear of that. The culture is different so please don't assume Koreans don't care, they just see the complications of a situation in a different way.

I'm of Middle Eastern heritage(my Dad is originally from Iran). Iran for the past forty five years has been an oppressive ultra conservative hard line dictatorship where civil and human rights, especially for that of women are totally non existent and where what we take for granted and enjoy in the west is basically criminalized. It is a historically very male dominated society, where a rather large minority of the male population have great difficulty understanding and respecting the word "no when it's uttered from a female's mouth. I don't know about stalking in Iran, it absolutely exists but doesn't compare to South Korea in that respect though! even though one's a democracy and the other a brutal dictatorship. Some Middle Eastern and Asian countries are historically male dominated societies, this is where I think Iran and South Korea have something in common. BIg respect to you for having the courage to publicly share this frightening experience.
