My second jiu jitsu class (and how to UN-DISLOCATE a shoulder)

Well it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. I even said in the first episode - the only thing I want to avoid is injury! But boom - 30 min into my second class - dislocated shoulder! Luckily I have been preparing for the day it dislocates again. I used a modified Stimson's technique to relocate it.
Looks like no jiu jitsu for me - will have to stick to Thai kickboxing.

Watching this after my shoulder popped my first week of jiujitsu. I was with another white belt and there was a pretty big weight class difference. My arm was on the mat on mount, she threw her body in the same direction and my arm folded back, It happened so fast, i was lucky it went right back in and i was able to move my shoulder right away, though it felt very sore. Prior to starting jiu jitsu i have already started working on my shoulder mobility (internal rotation) for stuff like kimura. Before the incident i actually had the chance to show off my flexibility, then a few day later i got humbled real quick, just goes to show i have more to work on. I am giving my shoulder a couple weeks to fully recover, then i'll start doing more shoulder mobility.

I dislocTed my shoulder crasbing a dirt bike 4 years ago. It was out for about 3 hours and it was 10/10 pain until it was finally relocated, and immediately becane a 3/10. The neck spasms were unreal.

"Reenacting how joints dislocate is a common cause of dislocation." Haha. That made me laugh :) Glad you were able to put it back quickly and that it's feeling a little better day by day!

Hey bud - glad you're okay and it wasn't too serious and you were able to get take care of it yourself - that's pretty cool. I've done some karate and some kung fu but it's been a long time - hope to get back to it, it's on the list, but it's a very long list, lol. Regarding street fights - announcing that you bleed easily and don't want to ruin their clothes is remarkably effective at disarming the situation with a laugh - that's worked for me a few times, lol.

Didi you start back at Thai boxing?? This is a funny one because I've had a similar issue. I used to do thai boxing, kick boxing and boxing when i was much younger and i think the impact from not only striking but holding pads damaged my shoulder a little. then i had a couple of snowboarding incidents where i fully dislocated my left shoulder. Carried on with life and more striking sports..... subsequently dislocating my shoulder 28 times. It sucks. I eventually decided to give up striking because my shoulder felt so bad after training then i turned to jiu jitsu! At the beginning as a white belt with no clue... i ended up dislocating the left shoulder twice. Thought that was the end for me. I had surgery...... went back to jiu jitsu after a year..... ended up dislocating it again. Had surgery AGAIN.... which was a Laterjet procedure. (i think that's how you spell it).... rehabbed and went back to jiu jitsu. Now don't get me wrong.... my shoulder is in pain. Quite frequently but at this point i think its more arthritic pain. However (touch wood, it has never dislocated since!! I think this is due to a few things.... 1) the surgery literally puts a piece of bone in place to prevent the shoulder moving into where it usually dislocated. 2) I have the jiu jitsu knowledge and the skill to almost always prevent my arm from becoming extended into a compromised position 3) I have the confidence to not roll with crazy white belts! The caveat to this. is; Accidents happen in combat sports and even if my training partner doesn't do anything wrong, there's always a chance i might forget and put my arm into a weak position. Lets hope not! Hope your shoulder is solid now!

Glad you're feeling better, I practiced Isshinryu for a number of years a number of years ago. We also practiced SOME judo interspersing tastes of other practices. Jiu Jitsu, to me, seems like Judo's meaner brother, you still use the opponent's energy against them, but in more creative and nastier ways. It's been years since I've practiced and I miss it sometimes.

If you're interested in strengthening your joints (and rehab that shoulder) I can really recommend yoga. There are tons of videos here on youtube that can show you how to do it right at home, Yoga with Adriene is my favorite 👍.

Thank you! This was immensely helpful! I bet the other people in class were impressed that you could fix your own dislocated shoulder 😅 Also, maybe check out Krav Maga? The principles are exactly what you talked about - Don’t end up on the ground and leg it as soon as possible 😅 I’ve been doing 3 classes a week for a few years and it’s awesome. I was doing 4-5 classes a week for about 6 months during that time too, but my body just didn’t have enough recovery time and I kept getting injured. I think at that period I didn’t really sleep more than a couple hours a night, so the fatigue probably contributed to making careless mistakes and ending up injured. In saying that though, I’m still really happy with 3 classes a week and no injuries 🤗😇

Bro, I had the exactly same experience- my left shoulder popped out when I was doing a beginner ju-jitsu class yesterday, and this kind of dislocation happened to me few times already in the last few years.. but each time it healed quickly so I didn’t pay much attention, but I’m going for an x-ray/ MRI next week to see what going on

Hey, great video. this happened to me 2 days ago (1st time ever) and also in a jiujitsu class. Worst pain EVER for a prolonged period of time (waited about 4 hours in er before being treated) I see you mentioned to get it relocated asap to prevent stretching of ligaments/muscles. Is there worse overall damage if you wait hours before relocation? Also this probably explains why for me it still feels extremely sore and unstable even after relocation and a couple day’s going by. Anyway, I’m totally scared if this ever happening again.

Dislocated my shoulder in BJJ a few days ago. I'm only 4 weeks in but I was absolutely loving it, totally obsessed. Now I am devastated. Not only because I can't train for a few months, but I'm not even sure if it's a good idea to ever train again. I dislocated the same shoulder about 10 years ago and same as you it was out for about 4 hours before being popped back in. Thankfully this time it was only out for a matter of minutes, but now it's extremely sore and no range of motion. What's your plan, do you think you'll train BJJ again?

@@SuperUniqueHandle damn I’m sorry to hear. When it came out this time, did you put it back in yourself? I have heard that once you dislocate it once it’s more prone to happen again (and the thought of that really bums me out ofc). But yes I will go back to training and basically I will just see how it goes. Luckily I have some friends at the gym who are brown belts so basically when I feel healthy enough to go back they said they would exclusively roll with me. Btw when I injured it no surprise here but it was with another white belt, so I think that’s the most dangerous thing. So I’d advise rolling only with experienced belts who know about your injury (until you have enough technique built up) that’s what I plan on doing

Nope, first time I went to A&E and they had to x-ray it to ensure there were no fractures before popping it back in. Yes they told me there was 80% chance it would pop out again, but after going 10 years and lifting heavy in the gym with no problems I had assumed my shoulder was completely fixed. Then during a very light roll with another white belt it came out again! Crazy luck that there was a doctor in the gym so it was relocated straight away. But I think it's safe to say my ligaments are ruined now and I expect it wouldn't take much to come out again. Are you going to rehab, and do you know how long until you can train again?@@mrdbchops
@mrdbchops

@@SuperUniqueHandle yeah I'm gonna go to some rehab, I haven't started it yet, I will soon. Not sure how long it will take until I train again, I'll probably go by how it feels. Right now being one month since it happened I can tell I am not ready yet unfortunately. Maybe another month I'm hoping
