My friends also thought I was nuts when I paid $100 for mine in 2001. Never sold it, never will. It’s been the prize piece of my collection, until I bought little samson cib and shantae cib about a year ago.
I used to collect for the Sega Saturn, specifically japanese imports. In fact, I have over 80 titles from that region and only one European game, even though I live in Spain. But since prices have increased a lot over the last decade I decided to quit buying because titles I am interested in have become insanely expensive.
Honestly, if you sell your games now, you're probably better off. Saturn games have a tendency to rot faster than other disc based games (PS1, PS2, etc) because the foil degrades faster due to their pressing method, and the data layer becomes corrupt faster as a result. Saturn lasers are becoming harder to replace, too. Many of the games work, but many of them don't. These days, with the market the way it is, it's much more sensible to sell off a collection while the market is extremely high and move toward ODEs. I like Saturn games for collecting purposes, but for playing? Too risky.
@@hughang8444 what I have been saying for years. I am sorry, but it’s just plain stupid to buy a Saturn game for hundreds when they are known to be the most susceptible to disc rot, and even if they weren’t a freakin video game just isn’t worth that much money. I got the MODE for the Saturn and I am in gaming heaven with the amazing quality of titles available that I wouldn’t have been able to play on real hardware if I actually tried to get the original discs.
the Saturn was appreciated really just about as much as it deserved. Expensive, difficult to develop for, horrible launch, hardly any games most people would be interested in...
@@iempire100 Not really. Just on the S tier items hot among the trendy. You can still get Nights into Dreams, Sega Rally, Clockwork Knight, Bug, Cyber Speedway, Hyper Reverthion, Crime Wave, many others for very cheap. I recently bought Hyper Reverthion for $15 and Vatlva for like $35. That's not so high nor hard. Also, those games were in brand new condition and complete.
@@fritzthecat8158 True, it deserves to be expensive. i just wish I had started collecting for it a decade ago. I'm counting on emulating Bomberman with 10 players on the next FPGA platform :)
I grew up in the 90s not knowing one single human who owned a Saturn. In fact, my brothers and I were the only people I knew who owned a Sega CD. We skipped on the Saturn though.
The 20 year mark is when both nostalgia from those who originally owned something and curiosity from those who didn't kicks in, so when you have something good like the Saturn that didn't sell well and consequently has a limited number of games in circulation, it's a recipe for prices going up. We're starting to see the same with the Dreamcast now. I collected for the Saturn for a little while but kind of gave up; I now only have a few really rare games. My last pickup was Radiant Silvergun, which I'd just wanted for years, and finally paid about $150 for on my last trip to Japan. That was probably 3 years ago now.
Greetings from Vancouver, Washington. Great video!!! I absolutely love the Saturn and it is my favorite system. I got it when it was released and have kept everything in pristine condition since. I remember playing Astal when it came out and was amazed by the graphics. I also think the original Saturn controller is the most comfortable ever. I am jealous of your collection.
Maybe I missed it, but didn’t see you have Sega Rally. That’s a must have for you since you like racing games and is actually one of the better looking 3D titles for the console. It plays great.
Not a collector, but there are two games I think you should take a look. The first a dungeon crawler called Shining the Holy Ark. I really like art, atmosphere and combat and if you have a lot of time to explore the game's massive dungeons you'll have a really good time. The second one is Guardian Heroes, which is a beat'em up with special moves similar to Street Fighter. Both are pretty expensive, but I feel are among the best games for the system.
Love the Saturn as it's one of my three favorite consoles, alongside the SNES and Dreamcast. That being said here are my favorite Saturn games. Battle Arena Toshinden Remix, D, Daytona USA, Dynamite Deka, Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butoden, Fire Pro Wrestling S: 6 Men Scramble, The King of Fighters '96, Marvel Super Heroes, Saturn Bomberman, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Virtua Cop 1 & 2, Virtua Fighter 2, and X-Men: Children of The Atom.
9:13 "Sakura Wars" Sakura Taisen Series! This is my favorite series in Saturn software I played 1 and 2 for quite some time at that time How Nostalgic...
Had a Saturn growing up. I was THAT kid. Today I only have 5 games for it: Die Hard Arcade, Dragonforce, Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix, Virtua cop 2, and Virtual On
Good you have Albert Odyssey but there are still a few holes in your collection: Blazing Dragons, Blazing Heroes, Guardian Heroes, Bulk Slash, Croc, Daytona, Deep Fear, Keio Flying Squandron 2, Linkle Liver Story, Lupin III: Pyramid no Kenja, Ninpen Manmaru, Princess Crown, Ninja Jajamaru-kun: Onigiri Ninpouchou Gold, Magical Drop III, Shining the Holy Ark, Söldnerschild, Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels, SteamGear Mash, Sword & Sorcery, Akumajou Dracula X: Gekka no Yasokyoku, and Tengai Makyou.
Here in Brazil, there is a gruop of people who make pressed games from different platforms. Among them, Sega Saturn, PC Engine, PlayStation, Sega CD and Neo Geo CD.
Mega Man X4 is my favorite game of all time and the US Saturn copy of it is my holy grail game, just because it’s so rare. You’ve got the disc and I’m jealous of that alone 😭
Guardian Heroes is my absolute favorite beat-em up of all time and was the only fond memory I have of playing a Saturn at a friend's house, and I still have yet to see anyone even mention it.
So many of those games I used to have....I still have my original Saturn, playable since early 1997. But early on I had the console switched, so I could play multi-disc Japanese games. I still have maybe around 40 titles in my collection. If you don't have it, I'd easily recommend Guardian Heroes. A side-scrolling beat 'em up by Treasure, it's a fantasy motif game with branching paths and multiple endings. You can fight on three planes, and you use a party of heroes to fight your way through hordes of enemies. Lots of humor, too. I had mine for close to 20 years before I decided to buy the Xbox 360 port, which is just as fun. But if one has a decent Saturn collection, they can't go wrong with Guardian Heroes!
Hey MJR! I loved the video! You certainly have a better Sega Saturn game collection than I do! But that's ok! I currently own 19 Saturn games in my collection (combination of US and Japan imports). Here's some games I'm gonna recommend you get: Daytona USA (with how much you love racing games, this is a must have!), Sega Rally Championship, Deep Fear (if you love Resident Evil, this is a must have!), Virtua Fighter 1 or 2, X-Men Children of the Atom (fantastic X-Men fighting game by Capcom), R?MJ The Mystery Hospital (a bizarre Japan import horror game taking place in a hospital), Area 51, Break Point Tennis, and NBA Jam Tournament Edition.
That's a great collection MJR. Now that emulation got a little better with the new Mednafen cores, I've been hunting a lot of Saturn games that I couldn't play back in the day when I had the console. If I may, here are some suggestions for your game hunting of some more unknown games that I've enjoyed quite a bit: - Hissatsu! (2D action) - Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru [Psychic Killer Taromaru] (2D action, amazing game) - Skull Fang: Kuuga Gaiden (2d action/shooter) You may also check the other two games in the Mobile Suit Z Gundam trilogy of 2D games which I like a lot. You already own Mobile Suit Z Gundam: Zenpen Z no Kodou, but there is also the first game (just called Mobile Suit Z Gundam) and Mobile Suit Z Gundam: Kouhen Uchuu wo Kakeru. Love your videos.
@@123doomdoom that’s even more reason for him to have these in separate jewel cases rather than a shitty cd binder which will put wear and tear on your discs overtime
I love my Saturn and I still have the original box and inserts. Some of my favourite games are Dodonpachi, radiant silvergun, quake, daytona and of course panzer dragoon saga :D
I have the UK PAL version of Panzer Dragoon Saga back home along with 1 and 2. I managed to get it at a decent discount, though that was about 18 years ago. I remember the guy in the shop telling me he knew I was getting a bargain but the prices were set at head office so I was in luck.
I was expecting the folder to contain backup discs and was a little disappointed that didn't happen. I was sure there would be a burned copy of Powerslave in there somewhere.
It's great to hear that you're still friends with Anna and sharing games! i wonder if the driver for the uptick in light gun stuff may be the Sinden light gun... which BTW would probably be a cool video for you to do (perhaps with DMP? i hear he has cookies!) thanks for all the great content, you got a great big heart, MJR
@@nattila7713 I'm sure you're right... for some reason i thought part of the draw was to do old light gun games on modern tvs i musta missed part of how it works
Cyber Speedway was my absolute favorite Saturn game. Got hours of fun playing against my friends. I still have some of the songs from the soundtrack on my MP3 player.
When the Saturn originally came out, I bugged the my husband about getting one. We were Genesis players, then PS1. He thought "Why?" about the Saturn but I thought it was cool. A couple of years after the Saturn's initial release I picked up one with a bunch of games for something like $100. Still have the system. Still play it. I really like Quake and Spot Goes to Hollywood. I love Myst. Even converted the husband to the Saturn with Tomb Raider. Games to today are getting expensive but if you get a converter to play Japanese games, many of those are still affordable and just as fun to play.
Petrucci with his old school Ibanez Picasso's pumping out those tunes on Necro, how cool is that? Other imports I have that are cool people should try: Linkle Liver Story (can burn a disc of it with English translation patched), Super Bomberman Fight!, Steamgear Mash, Detana Twin Bee, Willy Wombat, Waku Waku 7, Lode Runner: The Legend Returns, Galaxy Fight, Assault Suit Leynos 2, and cheaper counterparts from US-> House of the Dead, Layer Section I & II to name a few. So many gems during this era like with PS1 also.
I had the opportunity to get a Sega Saturn console for $60 at a local retro game shop that sadly closed in 2019, but I passed because I didn't have enough space to put another console in my collection and also wasn't working so not a lot of money to spare.
You made my day! Thanks for this pleasure to see such great collection! I also like collecting on Saturn, but in our region no one even don't know about this console, but this console is awesome cool! Love it much more then other consoles! Thanks!
Favorite system of all time. I was one of the lucky ones that was ignoring playstation hype stuck with the Saturn and got myself a copy of panzar dragoon saga on release day. One of the last games to be released. It is my favorite game ever.
I started collecting Saturn about a year ago and got some good ones. A couple I’d recommend to any collectors on here. Wish I had more case games but got a good deal disc only. Disc only I have: Primal Rage Virtua Fighters Remix Nights into Dreams Bug!, love this one Bug Too!, love this one too! Area 51 Tomb Raider Gex, so great to see. Love the N64 game. Sega Rally Championship My only import is: The King of Fighters 97 Non-original cases with custom box art I have: Astal, which he praises in the video Three Dirty Dwarves, which is a greatly creative beat-em-up. Complete in good condition original cases I have: Clockwork Knight, a unique platformer. Shining the Holy Ark, the shining star of my collection. Was expensive. MetalJesusRocks, I recommend the Bug! Games, Clockwork Knight, Shining the Holy Ark, Three Dirty Dwarves, and Gex
MetalJesus sir, many great collectors have gotten exposure thanks to your channel but when it comes to SEGA Saturn especially, youve been missing out a great opportunity with fellow collector SEGA LORD X. I hope to see you to get together once, even in an online meeting.
You might want to look into 'In The Hunt' unless you have it already on PS1 (Looks like Metal Slug but with a Submarine + shoot 'em up sensibilities), Legend of Oasis (prequel to Beyond Oasis on Genesis), Elevator Action Returns (just awesome), and Metal Black (shoot 'em up with great music) *import*. Outside of picking up Panzer Dragoon Saga at some point, I've got all the NA Saturn games I've wanted. Once I'm finished getting the last few games on my 'to get' list for other systems, I plan to put together a Japanese Saturn collection (just the games that interest me) as my final video game collecting endeavor.
The Sega Saturn is probably the most underrated mainstream console of all time. I got mine in I believe 1998 as it was breathing it's dying breaths from Sega just before the Dreamcast was gonna be launched a year later. However, I dropped the ball on collecting games. I do own a few originals that I've snatched up for the years but refuse to pay more than $100 for any every made. I did make CD-R burns off original games that my close friend owned so I do have some of that stuff. Funny you mention how Saturn racing games dont age well yet the footage of that very game running as you say that looks pretty damn impressive to me. Get Powerslave.
Super Collection Man !!!! You are the reason i started collecting !!!! Im from South africa and its super hard to find !! Thanks for the Great Content Cheerz
I collected some Saturn games after buying a system in 2013. The cart port was complete trash so I could rarely get the Action Replay to connect. I gave up until early 2020, when I went to a game store to find a better Saturn. A friend owns the store and let me test the ports. So once I was back on track, I bought MANY Saturn games...several reallllly pricey ones. I ebayed some rare Sega CD and other games as well as rare blu rays to help pay. My hit list was Super Tempo, Psychic Killer Taromaru, and Magic Knight Rayearth. Got them all complete in great shape, as well as some other pricey shmups and platformers. I’ve gotten most of my must haves, but definitely have more I want. My biggest issue is trying to get disc without pinhole scratches. I’ve returned several games that had them. Love the Saturn!
Um, I'm a Portland area collector. I also tried to tell you about some serious rare finds Don had for the saturn that you could have broke to the world. Now I'm one of a handful of collectors in the NW with a 100% complete US set, including all publicly released variants and all demos, like screams 2.
@@MetalJesusRocks he's my buddy as well Jason. And he and I have different ideas about what complete is. He doesn't count the demos or variants. I do. You can hear us talk about it on the Sega Saturn Shiro podcast, we invited him to speak on it some time back.
I just started collecting for it about a year ago. I have bought many reproduction games but i don't care. I want to play these games more than just have them sit on a shelf as a rare collectors item. But that does not mean i wouldn't get a copy of panzer dragoon saga if it was sold for a reasonable price.
If you can get around the region lock, either with a mod or some kind of cheat device, Japanese games are *much* cheaper and you can easily find sellers online.
I feel you man I started collecting for it in 05, really happy I did because it is hard to even find complete titles for it anymore. Cases sucked and routinely broke. I got maybe 40-50 US releases
Wait... MechWarrior 2 had a Saturn release?! How in the world does THAT work? That game relied heavily on high-resolution text and graphics for its interface on the PC and had a ton of simulation aspects thrown in with dozens of control mappings... You might want to consider showcasing that one in a future video just to highlight some of its differences! :O
Vatlva's not bad. We got a sequel on the Game Boy Advance, released in the United States as Car Battler Joe, but Vatlva's quite a different game; car combat from an overhead view. It's a bit like the fights in Star Control, but not in space.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I could've sworn you had Magic Knight Rayearth CIB at one point. Maybe it was in that video of the Sega Saturn and CD haul that you got? Not sure. It would be insane if we got to see a Saturn mini or Panzer Dragoon Saga released for modern consoles someday.
Great vid, MJR. Star Fighter isn't like Star Fox but Solar Eclipse is -- both are fun, but the best version of Star Fighter is, surprisingly, on the 3DO! North American Saturn releases are great, but it's not even remotely comparable to the PS1 until you add in the Japanese Saturn games. If the Saturn had received more translations, it really could've competed, but that's entirely on Sega (from poor marketing, to expensive dev kits, to few game releases, to just being an expensive console in general). You're totally right about 3D racing games not holding up. They (and pretty much all 3D games on Saturn) really weren't optimized, but they could have looked just as good and even better with the right tools and enough time since the Saturn is all-around the more powerful console (until the N64 came out). I still like Sega Rally and Manx TT, though.
one of my all time favorite pinball games is LAST GLADIATORS on the Saturn. if you like Sega Saturn and digital pinball, definitely get a copy of that one
Great collection! Saturn stuff is so pricey, I picked up a few imports, but all I really have are the 25 games I had growing up. I started using Gameye and It was nice to find out that Astal is worth a couple bucks.. Stupid Astal for not having it's title on the spine though. Looks like a blank sitting on the shelf!
My friend just grabbed up a Saturn and I’m so jealous. Then you put THIS video out to make me even more jealous lol. I can’t believe how many games you have for it. Great video!
Great collection! What comes to racing games, Sega Rally Championships is maybe my favourite rally game ever. It’s really cheap, challenging and fun as h*ll. You must check that out. Batsugun is really expensive but I think it’s the best shmup on Saturn. And also check out PowerSlave by Lobotomy Software, it’s a pretty fun ”metroidvania-ish” 1st person action puzzle game. All and all, great console, many good games to collect and fun to play.
Dude...get yourself some repro cases & manuals for some of those binder games! Well worth it. At least that would hold you over better (and look great on the shelf, which is what's really important - let's be honest) until you're able to get the originals.
It's so funny, schmups on the Saturn are soooooo good, that even today, with all the modern games, they're STILL impressive! I love the Saturn... outrageous system...
I have Alien Trilogy on PS1. Looking at what you have shown there it looks like the graphics may actually be a little better on the Saturn. Once I get my capture device I'll do a bit of a play through and let you know when the video is up. 👍
