I'm sure all Australians know this but check out Gardening Australia every weekend, they ALWAYS have local recommendations for what to do in your garden at that time of year. Great tip about mentioning local! It's best to plant with the plants that will adapt or fit well in your area to reduce unnecessary use of water, fertilizers, etc.

My favorite tree is a Mulberry. Low hanging fruit is perfect for the little ones to pick and the higher ones are perfect attraction for my birdwatching addiction. What ever ends up on the ground feeds all sorts of critters from bugs to possums. The bugs turn into possum and bird food. Sweet little possums gorge on ticks=no ticks ever on my pets or me!

Thought I'd share some things I've learned thus far trying to garden: + If you want to grow Thai Basil and mint, just re-root the cuttings you get along with your pho order. + The most laziest way I've gotten Dragon Fruit Cactus to thrive without the need of a storebought or handmade trellis/support was to allow it to grow up my parent's palm tree. Open enough to not get entangled by its thorns and tall and bare enough to get sun (versus a normal tree. it'd be like a tree with barb wire - I wouldn't want to go fruit picking in that scenario) + unlimited natural fertilizer: leave a 5 gallon bucket of water and aggressive weeds sealed for a month or so. after that, stir occassionally when you need liquid fertilizer. replenish with more water more often than with more weeds. and yes, it'll smell RANK, but after a while (mine's almost a year), it doesn't smell bad.

I put industrial casters on galvanized stock tanks for my container garden-then it’s easy to move them when you need to! But my method requires drilling into the bottom of the stock tank to attach the casters, so if you wanted to do that SIP style, you would need to caulk around the bolts for the casters.

A little tip from one fig grower to another, it might be in your best interests to keep your fig fairly small. There's a particular ideal ratio of plumage to fruit that's different from variety to variety, and in any rate, it's easier to handle a smaller tree, and a smaller tree is more receptive to fertilizers.

I set up 3 of the 5 gallon sips this past summer. Grew some mint, and some parsley. It was the first time we where able to keep some plants alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The third one we filled with oregano, and some re-grown green onions. And those do quite as well. But we got a bit back out.

I know this is a year old, but I encountered the same problem with moving my giant kratky hydroponic tubs once they were filled with water outside. I found it helpful to put them on furniture dollies before filling them up. You can build your own with wood and casters, or find some pretty big pre-made ones that have a high weight limit. The next time you empty those out, it might be helpful to put the containers on them so you can just roll them around wherever you want.

1:08 if you want to prevent grass creeping up to the trees, try covering up to the drip line with mulch. Check out Back to Eden gardening if you haven't! For the big Bois you talked about towards the end, I wonder if it would be worth trying aga, but placing them maybe in the yard somewhere where they could get plenty of sun elevate them slightly, and place them on a patch of idk, stone/gravel to prevent mice from burrowing? But then again that doesn't nessecarily stop the other grazers

Wouldn't you be able to move the giant planters with a pallet jack? I'm pretty sure you can rent them from your local hardware store or honestly just post a listing on CL
@markallen6433
@markallen6433 2 года назад
I've scored a pallet jack for as low as 25 bucks. Usually closer to 100 though. Placing the top half of the IBC on a plastic or wooden pallet would allow them to both be mobile, the pallet jack can be stored under one of the planters most of the time with a simple decorative cover that hides the handle on the north side where it doesn't block the light.
@dudewithavideocamera
@dudewithavideocamera 2 года назад
That would probably be doable, the problem with pallet jacks though, is that they're basically only designed to be used on perfectly flat floors. Even a tiny pebble in the way of their wheels will grind the whole thing to a halt, so using one outside is a huge pain. Plus, unless the SIP is already on a pallet, you'd have no way to slide the jack underneath it.
@markallen6433
@markallen6433 2 года назад
@@dudewithavideocamera yeah, the bottom half is already pallet based, the top half would be best if placed upon a heavy duty plastic pallet.
