Rob, very timely. Thanks very much. I recently got inspired to play with flash again after several years and, though I’ve gotten some practice by doing headshots/portraits of fellow residents in the retirement community into which we’ve moved, I’m frustrated with lack of additional practice opportunities. I’ve done the self-portrait route but got frustrated that I couldn’t control the camera remotely with iPhone so your mentioning the custom timer mode (I have an Olympus OM-D E-M5 II) is a big help as I wasn’t aware of it. Likewise, your use of a remote trigger for camera is excellent- I figured there had to be one for Olympus cameras! When I do my portrait shoots and my self-portrait practice I tether to my MacBook Pro using Olympus OM Capture and Workspace. However, I suspect the trigger receiver plugs into the USB port on camera so tethering (which uses that port) wouldn’t be an option. Great step-by-step video, Rob. Thank you very much!

Hey Rob! Great video as always, very educational. I've been in sort of a creative slump lately and have been debating doing some artistic self portrait shoots. Definitely going to apply some of your basics to my starting workflow. I think the timing of this video was all the inspo I needed. Hope all is well!

I have been following along on your Instagram and was waiting for the tutorial. If I do this set with cage, flash trigger, monitor, tether cable, etc I’ll end up getting more GAS. 😅

Ooh the setup for self portraits. Don't get me started. Ik takes ages and a lot of patience. And then, after the hair and makeup, you'd need to set up the camera, tripod and light stands as well ! ;-)

Nice video and walk through process. Free software- Darktable- has tethering function and raw file processing, and is cross platform.

Have you considered using a mannequin head for practicing? Maybe not too exciting but might be more like a portrait session you would get hired for. But great info for those who want to do some self portraits 👍

Seeing all those additional accessories mounted gives me agita. The money! A bit much for my budget.

Since I see so many asinine ads I'd be interested to learn what ads other viewers around the world are seeing. Lately I see a lot of ads for a "government" cash card, supposedly the gov't is giving away money to people under 65 & an endless barrage of B&H ads.
