Thank you for sharing your sewing/quilting room with your viewers. When I subscribed to your channel I did not realize I was getting a fellow quilter along with frugal tips. Love it.
So lovely to see your space where you get to be creative and where all those beautiful scrappy quilts are born . Glad I am not the only person that does not throw any scraps away .
You can never have too much light!😎 I sew in a basement so I had my husband install bright shop lights over the cutting table and sewing machine. But I still needed task lighting under the machine so I found a adhesive led strip. Made a big difference. Your lamps look very useful. I wish I had the benefit of natural lighting! Thanks for the tour.
Beautiful sewing room Jane! We are just in middle of decorating, and I have earmarked a bedroom for my craft room. Quilts are gorgeous, that’s a real talent! A quilter I know buys men’s shirts from charity shops for fabric. The bigger the size the better! Thanks for sharing your happy place😊
Good use of the space and so organized. And all to hand, kudos to you Jane and Mike. I made a quilt for our eldest daughter (nothing fancy and lots of learning curves) when she was young out of her baby clothes. I can still name each one when I see it. As a student she used it in her digs on the sofa. It took a beating to say the least. Took a few years for me to repair it with her cast off clothes and clothes labels from now.. I never thought she would cherish it so much as she does. One day - I hope to make a grandmothers garden quilt. I need a quilting room like yours, or maybe your ability to get organized of which I fall short. Thank you for sharing your home. Very inspiring video. M.
Using the biggest bedroom as a work space is such a good use of home real estate. What a nice, efficient set up for your beautiful hobby. Thanks for sharing.
That’s a fab huge room !! My eldest daughter has just left home so the youngest has moved into her old room and I now have a sewing room !!After sewing for 40 years I finally have “my” space it’s a working progress as I have a cupboard to upcycle and still need to put things up on the walls but it’s already so nice to leave the sewing machine out !!
I LOVE that you have a long arm! I've only done a few quilts and have paid a store to quilt them for me. I'm a multi-crafter--mostly knitting, so I always need a craft room. I have to fight my insticts to acquire too many supplies! This tour was fabulous. I can see why that's your happy place.
That was a fun tour, thank you. I'm watching it from my sewing room in fact. Your longarm machine must be great fun to have at hand. I don't have room or the budget for the kind I'd like (it would be around $35K USD) so I rent time on one locally which is expensive but not as expensive as paying someone else to quilt for me. It is such a fun hobby though, from start to finish. Your quilts are beautiful!
Oh wow, lovely quilts! I went seriously mad buying fabric, I have literally dozens of fat quarter bundles, jelly rolls, charm packs, layer cakes and metres & metres of fabric. Fabric.by Makower, Moda, Dashwood, Tilda, Riley Blake, Lewis & Irene, Henry Glass, Michael Miller and loads of others. My brother bought me a Janome 9400QCP sewing machine before he died, I made him and my mum a coin quilt, but since my brother and my mum passed away I just haven’t had the heart to use it or to do any sewing. Everything is packed away. I see you thoroughly enjoy your quilting, it’s lovely!
Love the sewing room tour. I am a quilter too and have the same Elna model (Quilting Queen). It was the first machine I bought when I started quilting about 14 years ago.😊
I love tours of creative people as well. Always inspiring to see what others like to make and what inspires them. Love all the lightening options you have. I don’t know if it’s my age but good lighting is a must have.😊 Thank you for the tour Jane❤ A question for Mike, does he have a creative space?
Your set up is a dream! I like your tips about cutting the leftovers in strips right away and using pillowcases/sheets. I’ve used sheets for backing but never in the top. Also, especially loved the gold, red, and gray quilt! Thank you for sharing.
It's nearing midnight... and I'm sorting through fabric inherited (by my brother) from a dear friend who was a quilter... Some have been donated to the church quilting guild.... and finding fabrics to try my hand at my first quilt top. Which of course would be a 'gift' for my brother, since it's his fabric! Your sewing room is an example of what frugality is - and isn't... You've got a long arm... and a bobbin winder... but you don't have the latest machine - or a dozen of them... some nice investments, where they really pay off. frugality isn't "cheap", but it is strategic.
Fantastic set up Jane. I'm re-jigging my art/craft room to make it organised and a nice decor to be in. I'd love to see some more of your work hanging on your walls! Do you keep a book of photos of all the quilts you've made over the years?
Thank you for sharing this glimpse of your sewing room with us. I like that you have a place for everything. It's wonderful that you have such a great space in which to enjoy the creative act of quilting. Makes me almost wish I were a quilter!
Emmaus is fab for picking up quilting fabric. We have 4 near us, and one of them has a monthly "mercerie"/haberdashery sale, plus more white sheets etc for sashing for white/ cream use or dyeing. and SO! cheap. It's next Saturday - I can't wait! Thanks for sharing.
@@FrugalQueeninFrance I can't get over how cheap it is. Generally it's a euro per metre, but they don't measure it accurately, and small pieces they throw in for nothing. Some fabric is new, some used/ secondhand.
Love the sewing room! I too am a scraptastic quilter, hanging onto any tiny bits to reuse later. If it is over half an inch, I can use it. Crumb quilts, tiny hexies (1/4" is the smallest so far) and tiny crazies all get made. Your sewing room is gorgeous, my supplies are in different places, with fabrics upstairs and the sewing machine downstairs, along with threads, embroidery supplies etc. Currently, well over the past couple of years, I am working on a random 1" sided hexie quilt, using up scraps that my friends give me, along with my own offcuts and charity shop finds. I am also doing a tee shirt fabric crumb quilt. There are so many more in planning. My major 2023 project is making the 1718 coverlet out of old silk ties and silk offcuts, all hand sewing. I now have 3 sewing machines, my modern machine, an old hand cranked Singer that works like a dream on things like denim, and the machine that my mum got to make my baby clothes and all of our childhood clothes. I know I don't need 3, but I couldn't let mum's machine go to strangers, it only does a straight stitch, had the motor retrofitted when we got electricity where I was born, and works like a dream. I know I am a sentimental old fool, but...
You make such beautiful scrappy quilts! It’s fun to see where you create them. You’ve inspired me to get moving on saving my scraps into usable pieces for future scrappy quilts. Watch out 2023!! Thank you for sharing your life with us, Jane and Mike. I appreciate it!
You have a lovely sewing room Jane I'm sure you have many hours of enjoyment in there and your quilts are lovely. I couldn't be without my craft room that my husband kitted out for me I haven't learnt to sew yet but I love my crochet and papercrafts. I think in these times in the world being creative helps so much (it does for me anyway).
Wow, Jane !!! Thank you so much for sharing your sewing room with us. It just goes to show that lots can be produced in a clean, very well organized place. I would be interested to know what you fill your quilts with. Thanks again.😀
All of my crafty creations take place at the dining room table or the coffee table in front of the couch. Loved the tour of your sewing room . . . . thank you for sharing.
I love your sewing room. Your setup is very practical. My sewing room is also a guest bedroom so I’m sharing space with 2twin beds. I’m working on some quilted projects for Christmas gifts right now but I have some quilt tops that will be ready to quilt after the holidays. I enjoy hand quilting so that will keep me busy over winter. So glad you shared this with us!
I really enjoy and gather new ideas from watching videos of others who sew. I've been collecting fabric most of my adult life so I have a lot! Rarely do I buy new fabric. I recycle old clothes and especially blue jeans. My favorite things to save or buy at thrift shops are sheets, pillow cases and cotton table cloths. You can get large seamless fabric very cheap from a sheet! I mainly use them for backings for my quilts and lining for curtains. Thanks for sharing your sewing room with us. I always learn or reminded of something from your videos. You're a smart lady!!!
Nicely organized. I have a singer sewingmachine and it is 45 years old and still working strong. Just taking good care of it and bring it in for servicing every two years.
Thank you so much Jane and Mike, as a fellow quilter - that was so interesting to watch. Thank you also for the craft light recommendation. I have added it to my Christmas list as my old light broke a few weeks ago. It looks very robust and like it won't break after a year of use like my previous one. :)
Thank you for sharing a tour of your lovely sewing room. I too am using our spare bedroom into a small sewing room, which works great until we have overnight company (kids and grandkids). Then I must scramble to clear off the bed and put away any works-in-progress, making certain that my tools are safely stored away from little hands. I am sure that you appreciate just how wonderful it is to have a dedicated sewing space where you can leave things in various stages of finish and simply step right back into your creative process. For many years I could only do my sewing on the kitchen table, which meant even more putting away. Your room is lovely, your view is spectacular, and the quilts that we have seen are truly works of fabric art. May you continue to have many happy hours sewing away!
Loved loved LOVED it, and those curtains...do tell! I love the pink binding on the edges! Also, congratulations on making so much money on your donated quilt! Amazing Jane!
I learned a bit of sewing during Junior high home economics classes but other than sewing on a button or mending a small tear, I'm not a sewer. You're certainly very creative in the quilts that you make and they are lovely! It is so wonderful that you have a dedicated space where you can enjoy your hobby. You and Mike both certainly do a lot of physical work around your property all the time so it's wonderful that you also are able to balance that with enjoying your time quilting. I'm sure you make many lovely gifts for people as well as possibly earning a small amount of money having folks commission you to do a quilt for them. One thought I had about a possible video is for you to discuss how you and Mike were able to retire so early and be debt free. I know you have mentioned in previous videos how you had bills when you and Mike got together and you each had your own families before and you had some struggle times. How did you get to the point of being able to retire so young and do it right with no debt or mortgage? You're always so open about sharing your budget with us but I don't recall seeing a video that specifically addressed your ability to retire. I apologize if I missed that video as I am newish to your channel only having found you in the last year. Hello to both Dolly and Mary as always and thank you for giving us a wonderful video.
I can tell you. We paid off all our debt and lived very frugally, then all the monthly money went to over paying our mortgage, then we down sized and all the money we were over paying to a bigger mortgage went to overpaying a smaller mortgage. We always paid into our work place government pensions. We were both able to take early retirement at 55 and take reduced pensions.
Really enjoyed this one, Jane. I love sewing room tours, and what a fabulous room you have! I'm just in the process of organising my new sewing room. I'm certainly going to look at Serious Lights, as I really need some decent lighting. Many thanks.
Jane i love what you have done to make a space for the creativity ideas to abound! My sewing room is not what i see in my minds eye. Right now my sewing room is a multifunctional room that used to be a bedroom. I also sew on an Elna 1010 sewing machine and over the years i have made many a window quilt curtain from fabric my Mom gave me,and some i already had. I also pick up sizeable scraps and use the flat bed sheets as well. I love your curtains you made for your sewing room, they are very fitting for that space! Beautiful! That little cubby drawer dresser, you keep all notions organized in, is such a great idea. I am not retired yet but sewing is on my after i retire list. I do mend our clothing to make them last longer is mainly what i do as long as i keep working outside of the home! Thank you for your video there are several ideas i would like to implement!
I loved this tour! I am also a quilter and I have been reorganizing my sewing room. I’ve mostly been dealing with my scraps and cutting them into precut sizes so they will be ready for whatever project I want to do next. I was amazed at how much was in my scrap bins! I’m cutting them into 10”, and 5” squares and 2 1/2” strips. I have made a couple of “scrappy” Christmas pillow covers and some ornaments. Someday the long arm! Happy quilting!
I was lucky enough to inherit my Nans sewing machine , must be about 45 years old now . I still need to get a desk to go in to my craft room & hopefully will be able to start using it & make some basic clothing for myself 😀
You have made a good job of your sewing room Jane well done. I sew as well but my pet hate is usually seeing other sewing rooms because they are usually so cluttered and messy but yours is just how I imagined it would be.... practical and beautiful with designated areas for the important things that need to happen and streamlined enough to have that professional getting things done air that we teachers bring with us evento our hobbies. I could imagine myself quilting in this room and enjoying the beauty of the garden view. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely space with us. Love vera in Northern Ireland
loved it!, loved it!, I wish I was as organised as you are. I've been looking forward to this video and you haven't disappointed me. Great video, guys, thank you ...... Mx
I use to quilt many years ago but now I primarily do garment sewing, just found that more practical for my lifestyle than making quilts. My mother passed away about 6 months ago and when I cleaned out her home, I found stacks of unopened very high quality German bedding she had collected. I have already decided to repurpose it for other items, so I was very pleased to see someone else doing this. Love your sewing room btw, a lot neater and better organised than mine lol.
I was waiting for this video and I’ve really enjoyed watching! Your room is lovely and very practical. I can see why it’s your happy place Jane. Your quilts are so colorful and beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Lovely to see your sewing equipment! I don't have a dedicated sewing space - just a hand cranked old Singer on the dining room table - but have enjoyed some quilting over the years. Your quilts are beautiful.
Ooooo I love this! So jealous of both of your machines. Youve motivated me to get my butt back upstairs and finish one of my projects that's been hanging around for far too long.
Lovely room. So well organized. I’ve only done some simple fabric projects and occasionally crochet. I need to have all these items in one specific place. My sewing box has traveled with me through 3 apartments and sits atop my refrigerator in each place, lol. I have some very good threads and needles which are used more often than the other items.
Thank you for the tour. I love your space and organization. Gives me a few ideas for my own space. Even though I don't qult, I do sew and crochet and need to better organize supplies.
