My Shoulder Rigs Were All Wrong, Until Now! (BMPCC6K Shoulder Rig)

I've been building my shoulder rigs all wrong, until now! I've fixed some common mistakes with the new build using BMPCC6k. I've done a few shoulder rig builds with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k, but this is by far my best and most professional yet! All of parts I used are linked before, so if you can't find something just lemme know. I dunno why it took me this long to start using a VCT--14 shoulder pad and quick release plate, cause it's truly the best way to use a shoulder rig and easily throw it onto a tripod of slider without breaking down your camera rig.

I watched so many shoulder rig videos and was always wondering how those guys would carry their gear on such front-heavy shoulder rig setups for more than 30 minutes before going fatigue and (which is even worse) amplifying every body movement by having the camera in front of the body rotation axis. And bang! Here comes your tutorial - outstanding insights from experience and learning - love the video and your attitude! I just received my Kondor Blue Pro shoulder rig for the Lumix S1H, and yur video was true inspiration for balancing it to the middle. To get the Shinoby 5" monitor with sunhood far away from my eyes, I just mounted an old metal bar (from my old stills photography days) underneath the left rig handle, letting it reach about 20cm towards the front. As the monitor is low it does not come in the way of my 16mm full frame super wide angle. Only disadvantage of such a rig: you will not be perceived by others as an amateur - people start gathering around you asking for which movie ot TV company you are working for.

I watched your rig building videos over the course of the last years. It seems to me that you found now a comfortable and well working setup. Thank you for the persistence in your quest of finding/building the perfect camera shoulder rig. In my case I would need to use reading glasses for being able to see any details on the monitor if that is so close to my eyes.

Hey thanks for watching for years, that's crazy! My rigs have definitely been evolving. The monitor is definitely close to my eyes, I'm trying to figure out another setup where it can be a little further out with out actually getting in the shot especially when using a wide angle lens.

Happened to me on my first shoulder rig setup, it was ridiculously front heavy with Sony 28-135mm PZ lens, stuck in the operation theater filming a 4 hours hip surgery. feels like I'm the one who need surgery on my arms(thankfully not). My right arm was in constant pain for almost a week whenever I tried to strengthen it up. So lesson learned, after I shifted the setup, slides it to the back sitting on top of my shoulder, with extended monitor like u did, finally my arm accepted my apology. I love your VCT setup! I didn't know SmallRig has that VCT rig set until I watched this video, thanks man!

Great setup. I already have a full small rig system built out for my handheld 6K Pro rig and this would be an easy upgrade to my rig to go shoulder mount. Thanks for showing this off with the links posted too! Much appreciated!

Great video! Wish manufacturers made shorter Shoulder plates for the BMPCC system so the V Mount doesn’t have to be so far from the back screen, though I understand the need to have a balanced system.
@chadwin

Yeah, I know what you mean! the BMPCC camera's are just such a different shape than most other cameras, very wide! But, they still balance pretty well on a shoulder rig.

Great build! solid rig, really good. Going to do something similar myself but unsure how to remove for a compact handheld. I think I might put a plate with 15mm rails on the base of camera so my vmount annd other accesorries can come off the VCT-14 plate. Lots of people seem to be about the arca swiss plates but that would add alot of height and lets be honest no ones using just a BMPCC6k camera on its own ha. Anyway what are your thooughts on getting to handheld config? Thanks!

Thanks for the vid! Really helpful to see this set up. Just a quick question: The shoulder mount itself doesn’t seem padded; after an extended amount of time, does it tend to get your shoulder sore?
@chadwin

no problem! Yeah, its made of a relatively hard foam/rubber like material so it doesn't provide a ton of cushion. It hasn't bothered me for short shoots yet, but I haven't dont a full 8hr shoot with it yet...

@chadwin
@chadwin 7 месяцев назад
100% you're right. the monitor is way too close to my face. i've been trying to figure out the best way to mount it. problem is, the further away I mount it, it ends up being in the shot-especially on wide angle lenses. I don't like using EVF's nearly as much as a monitor--but they do solve the problem.

Hey Chadwin! Have you tried this build with the 6K PRO? Wondering how much room you have up top between the cables and your head.
@chadwin

I haven’t tried it with the 6k Pro yet, but what I can say is they’re the exact same width, so what you see in this video as far as cables sticking out and room for you head will be the same experience.

hi chadwin, thanks for the detailed video, very helpful for people like me who don't know for sure what parts to get for a kit. I am only doubtful about the monitor being so close. can I swap it out with a nato rail mount EVF without getting any extra parts? will it work the same?
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 года назад
Ya, hopefully it helps you figure out the parts for your own build out! The monitor in this setup is def close to your face. You could certainly use any other EVF mount you want to. Using an EVF viewfinder would actually be best so you can just press your eye right up to it.

@@chadwin Great to hear that. Yeah the camera is huge, I‘m also thinking how to build my rig but I think I know where it goes: I have the tilta cage, with a left tilta focus handle and the nucleus n motor. Now I am waiting for the tilta baseplate to arrive then I will attach a NPF plate to the rods via a smallrig rod clamp. I actually don’t want to use a v mount battery, otherwise the screen could be blocked and I don’t want to use an external monitor. But yeah I’m very curious to see your build :)
@alantuttphotography
@alantuttphotography 2 года назад
With the monitor so close to your face, you may end up needing glasses before too long. Probably better to extend it out a few more inches.
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 года назад
Yeah, it's definitely really close to my face. I'd like to get it a little further out, but that presents a challenge cause once you get it our further it ends up in the shot especially if you're using wide angle lenses. The best solution would probably be to use an EVF.
@alantuttphotography
@alantuttphotography 2 года назад
@@chadwin Another option would be to get "reader" glasses, which would eliminate a lot of the strain on your eyes with this setup. These are the ones with a + diopter, such as +2 or +3.

@dominiccole
@dominiccole Год назад
I use a very similar setup but I use the other end of the top handle that has the 3/8 with locating pins and put a nato rail on there. From there I put a double ball arm that goes from nato to 1/4 and I screw that into the side of my monitor (smallhd 702 bright). that way there is quite a bit of reach and a lot of flexibilty since the ball arm has two joints and therefore is really pleasant to place in almost any spot thats needed. very sturdy as well.
@joelarvidsson
@joelarvidsson 2 года назад
I got half of those parts, but I keep using my homebuilt wich keeps the camera infront of me which of course isnt optimal. But i got a stag to a belt so its no problems with reds. The great thing is i have all controls easy accesable and the monitor at a great hight. The thing i dont understand why nobody makes a slightly curved shoulderpad that follow the human body. This one is a little wobbly at the shoulder compaired to my diy. Also, Im not sure how you change iris, iso etc convinient. Enjoyed youre video! Cheers
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 года назад
thanks for watching! Sounds like you've made a nice custom rig that works for you. Sometimes DIY is better than anything you can buy. Yes, the shoulder pad is pretty stiff, definitely doesn't curve with the shoulder, but I have used some others that curve a lot more. Yeah, to change ISO and IRIS i have to look at back of camera or pull iris on manual lenses.

This does go over some valid points but the problem with the rig balance is the fact that you can and most likely will (with enough use) screw up your shoulder blades. The weight of the rig without any kind of basic dampening Will over time relocate the plates in your shoulder. Make sure you properly balance the weight between both your shoulder and arms
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 года назад
yeah, you're right! It's a lot of weight to be primarily resting on your shoulder. luckily most of the time when I'm doing shoulder rig work it's short and mixed with tripod and gimbal work as well. thx for the tips!

Do you have any issues with EF mount with heavy cine lens and follow focus, some says a lot of lens mount play occurs. By the way tilta says do not feed the focus motor via usb, you may end up burning motors
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 года назад
I don't have too much issue with that, but there can be some play using an EF to E adapter when using a really heavy lens. when that happens, typically I just through a lens support underneath lens on 15mm rods. This Tilta side focus grip was literally built to power the focus motor via mirco usb, so there are no issues.

Thanks! Yeah, it does all add up, but I've bought each of the parts individually over time so it doesn't hurt the wallet as much when you build it over time. There is no way to properly rig a BMPCC to a shoulder rig. It's just not possible because of the awful design. They are really designed to be on a tripod or used in a studio setup. You'd be better off buying and old BM Micro 4k and a Video assist 5" 12G. That would be a better setup. I've been trying to rig my 4K for a month now and the only way to do t is to have your head tilted sideways for the entire shoot.
