Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. Planning (Plan week on Sunday): 1. Brain dump every task you need to complete in the week 2. Separate these into P0, P1, P2, and dependent - P0 is the biggest priority and P2 the least while dependent are tasks that you can’t do anything about right now and need to wait in order to complete 3. Schedule days and or times to complete each task

From experiment with several planning strategies, methods, and mediums, I can say with sincere certainty that every single thing you mentioned is important and helpful. The biggest thing is, as you mentioned, understand yourself; how you thing, your flow states, your awareness of time, etc. and then cultivating a system that feels right for you. This is definitely try and error so being able to track what works and what doesn't is key each week. I will definitely implement a lot of your strategies to my own planning routine! Great content!!! Keep it up!
@SuncloudMashups
@SuncloudMashups 2 года назад
I love how you keep the strategy simple so easy to implement and update, and then add more specificity only when it applies at a psychological/physiological level (like context switching time and scheduling important stuff when your brain is most clear). This seems like the most agile and efficient way to plan and work. I can't wait to try it.

I'm creating positive baseline habits for myself and planning my week is one of them because I have quite a lot of objectives and goals for my life I definitely relate to giving up and doing nothing for the rest of the day or even month because I feel like I have no control of my time I've been planning and now I'm showing up.

Just started to learn about the idea of planning the year, months, weeks AND days. Always did it at a day level or thought of "long term" but never capturing the important dates ahead of time. I found that I never take time off from work because by the time I realized that something important was coming up, I was too busy in the day to day focus to really think about what I might want to do. As a result, I never really took time off from work. Although it is refreshing. Anyways, that idea of planning at the year, month, week and day level is a result of the training I am going through. Training to become a military recruiter that is. Seems like awesome stuff and a very refreshing perspective to look at things from an experienced recruiter and awesome instructor. Having someone show you that you CAN do it and it IS NOT crazy... to include that strong proven systems exist for these things... It is awesome. Leading by example! Appreciate your video for sure. Planning by the week seems awesome. I like that you mentioned flexibility too. Just being aware and accounting for that is good stuff honestly. Along with learning yourself more and more as a result of tracking how you execute your tasks.

I took notes and it made me realize just how outstanding this video advice was. Sharing the notes here, I hope you don't mind. [She usually plans her upcoming week Sundays around 5:30PM. She likes this system that works for her because it has simplicity and flexibility.] 1. Brain Dump. Dump all thoughts in head on paper. Doesn't even have to be a task. 2. Go through List. Cross off things that are not actionable and things you know you won't do this week. 3. Organize everything left into 4 Different Categories. P0, P1, P2, Dependent. P0 is highest priority - for those most important and urgent. 4. Two Minute Rule. Highlight everything that can be done in 2 minutes or less. Go do them now. This is an anti-procrastination habit. 5. Write down Day you will do the things on the list. For things you generally know when you will do them, write down the day next to them. This gives you an idea how your week will look. Schedule the day as they come. No need to schedule them in the daily planner until the day approaches as schedules shift. 6. Pre-plan outfits on Sunday nights, even if just having socks pre-planned or whatever drives you nuts to find in the morning. 7. Plan the day's schedule the night before or the morning of. a) Block out chunks of time for meetings, appointments and time-bound activities b) Put two P0 items at the top of your day (or 1 item but she prefers two items, one work related, one non-work related). Shedule these 2 P0 things as early as possible. TIPS: 1. Things always take longer than anticipated. 1.5 to 2 times longer. 2. Schedule time to context switch. She blocks in 30 minutes when switching tasks. 3. Schedule in breaks and time to eat. Be intentional and honest about your scheduling. 4. Things happen. Be ready to shift your schedule. See your plan as a Living Document. Important thing is you still have the rest of the day to use the time as you see fit and you can reprioritize items as needed as your day's schedule shifts. Try this and with time you will get better at planning and being more honest with yourself as you plan. And an added benefit is you will start noticing what works for you better and understand yourself better. :)

Great stuff. This seems like shorter term day to day planning, but it reminded me of something I've thought about when it comes to goals and longer term planning. Having a plan it's not about following it. It's about having a plan. A plan roots you. It's what you have decided you are about. It's the thing you deviate from. If you don't have a plan then you don't know if you are deviating way too often, and need to take a look in the mirror and decide if you need to change your goals or make moves to stay more committed. If all you have are vague thoughts instead of a written plan you will often feel like you are wobbling too much. If you have a written plan then you haven't actually changed your plans unless you bother writing the change in. This prevents you from having any stray idea be a 'change in the plan'. Only when you are committed enough *to bother to write the change* have you actually made a change. This would at most swing back and forth a few times until you settle on something you keep coming back to.
