My Smallest Keyboard - Miuni 32 Build

My smallest keyboard is now this Miuni32 and I love it. It's been sitting idle for such a long time in that long list of unbuilt boards. This build didn't exactly go according to plan since I was still in denial about the Outemu Ice V2 switches I was determined to put on it. In short, I don't like 'em. I thought I could live with some lower quality switches since I'm using the Miuni32 as a macro pad, but no. It looks so good now that it's finished that I can't let it have these switches. I'm probably going to go with the old faithful retooled Cherry MX black switches that I've now got in my Canoe and my Tofu HHKB.
Outemu fans, sound of and tell me how wrong I am. 30% haters, decry my comically small keyboard. Everyone else, do what you got to do in the comments.

Looks like the type everyone needs to build at least once!

Yeah, definitely. Especially if you're not confident with soldering. Just as long as you use switches with the PCB mount pins :D.

Cheers! Yeah, I had left this little thing and the case sitting in a drawer for such a long time since I wanted to do them both justice.

Using my 40% right now infact. Use it at work to answer emails all day. Loving the Cherry MX browns on my Vortex Core but want to swap out the spring soon. Want a heavier switch tbh. Also love your work!

That's cool. I think I could get by without much trouble in my job, but I do sometimes use Illustrator, so I like having the extra keys. Get the soldering iron out and swap in some heavier springs. :D

@Rics Shadow 2 years later: How do you feel about heavier switches? (I'm looking for words to describe this impression as I've just ordered a Planck EZ outfitted with Kailh Box Blacks.)

Respect to that. How long have you done that? I actually really loved using my Niu Mini, and would probably be fine with it at work, where I usually only type in Word.

@@Chokkan I been using my 40% (DIY, ortholinear, handwired) for a bit over 6 months, and I love it! It is my first custom keyboard I went from a full size to a 40% one day to another, what a change! Im a CS student so i use it primarily for coding and writing in general.

That's really cool. I see a lot of people say you can't do real work on very small keyboard, but I guess it depends on your use case.

Lovely keyboard! I'd like to build something like that for the android tv, where you don't really need anything outside alphas and space! Weird layouts are forgettable too as anything would be better than using a four way remote to click letters on screen sorted in alphabetic order! The only catch is that it needs to have bluetooth!
@Chokkan
@Chokkan 5 лет назад
Oh yeah, that would be a cool use for it. Can't remember if there's a keyboard this size that is wireless.

@@Chokkan Probably the only way is going handwired with a controller like a bluefruit or something like that! Or maybe hacking a pcb coming from a small membrane keyboard into an handwired mechanical keyboard!

Almost all I have are 40% boards and lower. UT47, CRKBD, HHKB Daisy, Planck, Minivan, and Alpha28.
@Chokkan
@Chokkan 5 лет назад
That's cool. I knew there had to be some people that used 40% regularly. Is there anything you find that you can't do on your 40%s?
@Hedgey404
@Hedgey404 5 лет назад
Chokkan I actually find that I can do everything, and I’m pretty proficient. Sometimes things like brackets or something along those lines is hard to find, however I’ve modified my layouts to be more intuitive. On split space like the minivan and daisy, I use enter with my left thumb. Also QMK makes it great for tap/hold keys to access layers. I swap all the above boards as work boards depending how I feel, but I recognize I’m in the minority in terms of being able to switch between layouts, stagger/ortho, and split space vs full space really easily. There’s a ton of us 40 users and we even have a discord channel :)

How was the TS80 on a “full” build?
@Chokkan
@Chokkan 5 лет назад
It was actually really good. But you can see I'm struggling with picking it up and putting it down. Why I didn't even use the stand, I have no idea lol. It doesn't make it that much easier really. It seemed to handle this little build quite well.
