My Son Broke His iPhone And Xbox Controller, Can I fix them?
I don't usually fix phones because they are sooo fiddly, but seeing as I'm a good, dad I'll have to have a go....
I've been fixing stuff as a hobby for most of my life, mainly electronic stuff but also I repair my own cars and other mechanical things too! I like a challenge and problem solving and will pretty much have a go at repairing anything!
If you like repair videos or seeing an old git fudge his way through trying to "usually" repair things, then please consider subscribing :)
Thanks!

Best thing for phone screens and tablet screens is an smd hotplate. Heat screen side down at 70 degrees for 4 mins or so and that adhesive is putty. Got my hotplate a few years back, good for so many things, phone repair is just one! Silver backplate aids heat dissipation btw.oh and I-fixit guides are great for screw lengths!

Thanks Crypto Live👍I actually built a hot plate when I was repairing a Milwaukee spotlight. The led had failed and was on an aluminium PCB so I built the hot plate to remove and replace the LED. Thanks for the tips 👍

What brand iron is that? Also the flux brand? I like them both better than what I use.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Год назад
The iron is an Aixun T3A. I actually did a repair video on it last year when it stopped working. The flux was just a cheap one I bought from ebay. Kingbo I think it is, I find it takes quite a bit of pressure to get it to come out of the syringe but it seems to do the job. Hope that helps 👍

Having been into a couple of maufacturers phones, so far the iphone's were the easiest. Less hot gunning glue etc. Great videos. Keep it up.

You missed the back strengthning panel off the inside of the screen
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Год назад
Yes I noticed after fitting it that there seemed to be a plate on the back of the original screen still, it seemed too much trouble to take it all apart again, and knowing my luck I'd probably end up cracking the new screen! but thanks for letting me know👍

@@BuyitFixit The reason I mentioned it is because I have came across quite a few with missing backplates that have caused near catrostrphic events as if they break again it is possible that the glass can peirce the battery and then bang fire

If you used the handle with your screw driver bit, it would magnetise the bit and make putting screws back in at least 10 times easier.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Год назад
Yeah good point. I wasn't thinking of the magnet part of the driver. I just thought it would be more precise and less chance of stripping the screws using it without the length of the handle.

Well fixed, and son shamed at the same time, what's not to like? Seriously though (as another concerned viewer pointed out) be careful with any blades named Stanley, unless you are competing with Vince in the potential death video stakes. The additional views would not be worth it.

You didnt swap the metal backplate over to the new screen and left on the plastic copper coloured sticker
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Год назад
Thanks Dazboy👍Someone else mentioned the same. I hadn't done one of these before and thought it was just part of the original screen. Thanks for letting me know, it's how we all learn 🙂👍
@Ed_Stuckey
@Ed_Stuckey Год назад
I was surprised you didn't need to transfer the bright metal shield from the damaged screen to cover the copper-colored one. It appears to cover some areas not covered by the copper one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Год назад
Thanks Ed, a couple of people mentioned that, and honestly I didn't realise that you had to. I thought it was just part of the original screen. I would swap it over but knowing my luck I'd probably crack the screen I just fitted. I've still got the plate, and knowing my son, it probably won't be long until it needs changed again 😂😂😂

Another nice couple of fixes Mick, nice one! Did you avoid using the full screwdriver handle on the phone to avoid over torque something? Just interested..

When I fix controllers no matter what I do I take the shell and completely clean it by scrubbing it. I would have also lubed the shoulder buttons. This one wasn't that bad but I have fixed so many that it is just a rule for me.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Год назад
Thanks Exodus, we actually cleaned it all a couple of weeks back as he had some buttons sticking (probably why it didn't look too bad) but the shoulder button was still acting up, so I thought I'd replace it. Good advice all the same, and thanks for your input 👍

I'm sure it would be less fiddly if you put the screwdriver bits in a handle, you looked so cack handed without.

Yeah, the handle is quite long and I didn't want to round off the screws being too heavy handed. I used the handle in the next bit on the xbox remote 🙂

Regarding the phone, a few tips: a) Don't push a sharp blade towards your hand, fingers or any unprotected fleshy part of your body! b) Heat the phone's screen first (using a hair dryer, hot air gun, etc) to soften the glue (although as you mention you seem to have opened that one before) c) For damaged screens, to avoid shards flying everywhere apply some adhesive tape all over the screen before prying it off d) Use the correct adhesive/tape to stick the screen in place when finished, without it there's less water resistance and the phone could just fall apart e) In future I'd recommend not buying Apple's crap, particularly the more recent models as not only are they stupidly expensive but Apple do their best to make them impossible or extremely expensive to repair. More often than not they end up relegated to a draw or landfill, so not very environmentally friendly either.

As a phone technician I completely agree with you. Also I recommend to heat the screen before pulling out the Fingerprint sensor(aka home button) and the front facing camera flex. The fingerprint it’s also paired to the motherboard and if you’ll rip it, you will lose touchid also home button functionality even if you replace it. The metal plate from the back of the screen it’s there for support and to protect de screen(if the battery will expand for example)

@BuyitFixit

Thanks for that 👍yes not a genuine screen, but I didn't want to pay the price for a genuine one to have it smashed again a few weeks later. It's actually still working and has been fine.
