If your spa drains down after the pool turns off chances are it is a check valve failure. This could mean that the check valve is bad or debris is stuck inside of it.
The check valve is designed to keep the water from dropping down to the pool water level in an elevated spa (which is how most pools with spas are designed). If the check valve is not working properly, water will flow back down through the pipes as gravity takes effect. So 75% of the time it will be faulty check valve.
But not always. At the end of the video I show other possible causes such as a bad or faulty Valve Actuator.

So these are the most common things that will cause your spa to drain down when the pool is running or when it is off. Sometimes it takes a while to troubleshoot this problem since it can be more than one thing causing the spa to drain down. I would start with the check valve and then work down the list.

THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU!!! This video saved me a $150 service call. I sent my system into SPA DRAIN mode accidentally and when I activated SPA FILL mode - it would just keep draining. It turned out to just be a stuck spa drain cap/plunger thingy inside the Spring Check Valve. Working perfect again! Thank you so much for this video - YOU ROCK!!! 🙏

I have the ortega check valve. Turned off the pump, unscrewed the cap, lubed up the ring, placed everything back in, and completed within 5 minutes. Saved between $140-$200 doing this myself. Thank you!

Thanks for the comment. I too learn something new all the time. There is so much to learn in this industry. I've also learned by making some mistakes too, which isn't fun. Nothing dangerous as I am cautious out there. I've charged D.E. filters up (twice now) while the backwash valve was open, FYI - lots of D.E. goes into the pool once you close it ;). I've also fallen into pools a couple of times. But I've learned A lot from other pool guys over the years. That is what makes it a great trade.

Fabulous. I was in the 25%. I rebuilt my caretaker 5, replaced the nearby (pressure check) flapper check valve, and replaced the five diverter valve paddles (Jandy Neverlube) and all o-rings. One of the diverter valve o-rings was clearly damaged---half gone. When all done, the spa now retains water over night. Yay! Thank you!

I wanted to thank you for this great advice. My spa was draining back into my pool for quite awhile and I was afraid I had a leak someplace. After I did the bucket test to check for a leak and found none, I became convinced it was something else. Your video and the statement that 75% of the time it is the check valve convinced me that my problem was there. I didn't know which of the three check valves was misbehaving so I did the logical thing and replaced all three. VOILA!! I am cured. Simple as pie and I got the valves on line with free shipping for about $80.00 so I am a happy camper. Thanks for the great advice.

This worked for my Pentair check valve! There wasn't any noticeable debris but there was an algae buildup so I cleaned it thoroughly and lubed the O-ring. Thank you a million times. I have the same exact hot tub & pool setup as one of the pools in this video. So, thanks a million!

I kept ignoring the water level in the spa lowering each evening, but the birds like to drink in the spa at top level in the mornings...so I finally followed your instructions and it was a 5 to 10 min. job. thanks! paid $14 for the Jandy valve on Ebay. Glad I spotted your video and didn't have to pay a pool repair to do this.

Thanks so much! You just saved me $250.00 that my pool service wanted to replace one of these. Bought the flapper assembly on Amazon for 28.00! (btw, the part # for a Zodiac/Janty Flapper assembly is 7056, not the 7036 that is on the cover, that is the part number for the clear cover only. Hope that helps, it took me a while to figure this out.)

my spa is filled by a water feature to overflow when pool is running...when pump is off my spa drains back to pool thru water feature valve...how do I correct this without having to close overflow valve....thanks

I have a pool and spa combo. I'm shutting down the spill way (winter) but in a matter of 4 days the spa will drain. Skimmers and pool main drains have check valves, returns from spa have check valves and after the pump before filter I have a 2-14 lbs rated check valves at almost full capacity. And when actuator turns from pool to spa that mid point is where water pushed by gravity from spa that is above pool & equipment drains into pool returns. I figured a 3" main drain reduced to 2" before pump is to much force for my check valve. Any solutions? My goal is to not use the spill way o. The winter but the winter mode will kick in and I can cheat by removing the freeze protection from spa and on for pool to prevent actuators turning every 15 mins. (Pentair easy touch)

The reason for this is a bad check valve in the spa return line where it's not sealing the flow off properly and due to the spa water level being higher, gravity will allow water to back flow into the pool return lines therefore raising the water level in the pool then dropping when the pool pump turns back on .. I've had jobs where the installer slapped so much pvc glue in there , that a new flapper still wouldn't seal right.. 18 yrs exp. Msg me for any problem with pool, I'll be glad to help .

i first have a pool and after draining the water out and cleaning, i tried to fill it in, but it turned out like the water half way gone and the pool water level doesnt rise up when it reached 1/3 eventho the pump is turned off. i dont see any other valves but the ortega one.. what should I do?

Hi David..I love your videos. Do you have one that shows how to replace an Ortega check valve with a Jandy spring loaded valve? They stopped making the Pentair Ortega seat assembly and the generic part is just a bit too small. Thanks!

That is a bit more of a difficult swap since they are designed differently. You would have to do some Mac Guyver type plumbing to get the Jandy Check Valve to work in place of the Ortega one. If you email me some pics I can send them to a buddy of mine who just did one of those last month.

Thank you for the quick feedback, I have already confirmed the pool water is not rising, when the Spa water goes down. This happens when the filter is off, do you know what kind of caulking is recommended to seal around The Spa jets?

+FonejoeProductions From what I have seen you will have to call a leak specialist out in your area to isolate the exact area of the leak. This will cost $300-$400 depending. If you line in the L.A. area of California I can recommend someone. Fixing a leak is a real pain.

I lubed up the Ortega part as described. Where previously the spa would drain down to the pool level after 15 minutes of the pool pump being off, it stayed full for over an hour... so, I think this did the trick. Question, though... after turning the pump back on, excess lube was pumped into the spa. Is this normal or did I apply too much lube? If this is problematic, what should I do to resolve? Thanks!

I am a new pool owner and one again you saved me money. I have a question about this . I did the bucket test last night and noticed the spa was low. When this happens does the water go into the pool causing water to go into the overflow?

Possibly. Put a piece of tape at the pool water line and watch it. If the spa is not leaking but water is going back down the lines into the pool the water level will rise over the tape and out your overflow. Best to do this when you can watch it happen.

Sounds like your pool is in spa mode. Simpy turn the two valves the opposite direction and that should get it in pool mode.

+meupoyni No - that drain is connected to your pool pump - anything that goes in their will end up in the pump basket. It is usually off unless it is in spa mode.

I have a valve similar to the one at minute 4:51 with a blue handle that opens and closes the valve. Would a bad check valve also cause a vibrating type noise when the pump is on and water is running through the heater? It only happens when the pump is running for pool circulation and not the spa. The noise goes away when I adjust the pool/spa valves, but it makes the water levels uneven. I hope this makes sense.

It could be the flap is not working properly in the check valve causing that issue.

ip No way to tell by looking at them. I would just purchase a kit and replace them as they are pretty inexpensive.

If my negative edge troth is over filling would that mean it is the check valve with in the troth or the one by the EQ?

There is a fill valve in those negative edge troth that tends to fail on occasion and over fill it. That is also the auto fill for the whole pool. it is located there so the troth is always full of water. +Nasser Iranikhah It is possible that one of the spa jets is leaking water underground. It is not uncommon. To be 100% sure let the spa fill up and turn off the system. Mark the pool waterline with tape exactly at the water level. If the water does not rise in the pool when the spa drains down you could have a possible leak in the spa - usually around a jet.

I had a similar problem. Got a leak test of the plumbing done and the person said the plumbing is fine. Water goes down all the way to the Drain Level, below jets and below the light in the Spa but Water level in the pool does not rise. Thoughts?

Hello, Thanks for the great video. My spa water level goes down after I turn the power off. Have changed the flapper check valve, did not help. I used the service mode on the controller and turn the spa mode on. The electronic valve seems to change the position, so it is not the spa relay or the controller board.What else could be the problem? Bad valve? It is a Jandy system. Thanks

It could be the valve o-ring itself. Check your programs also - sometimes there is a spillway program and this could cause this to happen also. If there is a spillway program delete it.

Simply turn the return valve to spa return and leave the suction valve on pool mode. Or it will fill on it's own.

spa jets are all a bit different. You would have to take a photo into your local pool store to match the jet brand.

No. Vaseline will break down the o-ring. A silicone base lube is fine if you can't find magic lube.

Interesting video. Our Spa has Always drained down when the pump is not on (new pool). I assumed this was normal. Is it possible the check valve was installed backwards? I have had other plumbing issues that I had to fix, clearly the pool builder was not very good with plumbing. And out of business now, but that is another story.....

It's possible the spa is actually leaking. You only notice it when the system turns off. Do you have an autofill on your pool? If so turn it off and see if the water level drops.

Hello, can you help me out with this problem, okay i have a pool with an elevated spa that water falls into the spa, the set up is, American Products Pump, with 1 jandy valve for pool/spa suction with a check valve on the spa suction side which is before the jandy valve , then another jandy with pool/spa return with this mueller check valve in between the 2 return lines. Issue is, even though i do 100 pool suction, it still drains the spa about 30%. What seems to be the issue? I have lubed and replaced all the o-rings of the lid, brand new jandy valves and o rings, new pentair filter o-ring, new backwash valve o ring, so i dont know what is the issue. Also, whenever i put it to 100% pool suction, the prime will lose about 30% water, it still sucks in the water, but i can see it in the pump basket that it immediately loses it's full prime, only when i turn the jandy valve to about 20% pool suction/80% spa suction then the pump basket gets filled back up with water. I cannot possible see where the air leak is, but the only thing i know 100% is the disharge water leak, which i need to repair, but since that's the pressure side, it does not have any effect on the suction side, correct? Please let me know what you think and thank you in advanced.

bludika When there is a discharge leak it is more obvious because the water pressure will push not only air but water out. Usually there is a leak also right before the pump - you cannot see it because water doesn't usually leak out.

yea i understand, but this is what i dont get, i said it wrong, okay so the Check valve is on the Pool suction side, BEFORE the jandy valve. See, when i do 100% pool suction with the vacuum not attached to the skimmer, the pump primes just fine, so does the 100% spa suction. BUT when it's on 100% pool suction, and i attach a fully primed vacuum hose (kreepy krauly, the exact model you reviewed that blue and grey one) the pump immediately starts losing prime, and the prime goes down by about 30%, i can see from the pump basket it is still suctioning water but it's also sucking in a lot of air hence the pump basket is not fully filled with water, BUT as soon as i remove the vacuum hose from my skimmer suction hole, the prime is back to normal. I don't know what's wrong with the vacuum that it's causing the pump to lose the prime. See thing is, instead of doing 100% pool suction, when i do it about 80% Pool/20% spa suction, THEN the prime gets back to normal, but the issue is, my spa water level goes down due to suctioning AND returning at the same time. I want to do it 100% pool suction but it's not letting me due to loss of prime when it's 100% pool suction with the vacuum hose attached. I checked almost everywhere, and i don't see or hear any air leak in the suction side. The only thing i know is the water leak at the discharge which i need to fix, does this leak have any affect at all?

I lubed the ortega Valve VAL-PAK V20-069 twice, spa still drains when pump is off. After I cleaned my pentair flt fns pls60 DE fillter , run quick clean, the following day , it drained again. Do I need to replace the ortega Return valve and 1lb spring? Or what do you suggest I’ve been skipping. Thanks.

Those parts are hard to find but it sounds like that valve is pretty worn out. You can try to replace the insert and spring as a 1st step.

You are referring to the Ortega 2" check valve - the one that is solid and has a twist off cap? Then using a pair of Channel Locks on it will get it off.

Hi. My spa has always done this. I just thought it was normal. I looked and realized I don't have a check valve installed on my spa return side. Is this a problem? Does it really matter? Thanks for any info.

Doesn't matter in any regards except it is unsightly for the spa to be lower when the pool turns off. Maybe install a check valve to solve the issue.

So as the spa drains back into the pool, it should raise the level of the pool also, right??

Unless the spa sits very high above the pool it won't be very noticeable.

A friend of mine had the same problem and since i have experience with spas, he asked me to check it out. I found zero leaks, zero mechanical problems and i was stumped.... so this went on for a couple weeks with the same issue. So one day i asked him to set up a trail cam facing the spa. He asked why, so i said, since you live in the mountains, i think i know where your water drop is coming from. The trail cam captured just about every animal indigenous to the area drinking from the spa every night ! Now its covered all night long. Just thought id share this weird story. Not everything is what it seems.

Hi. Love your show. First time caller. Long time listener. My Jandy valve is vertical, I think whoever installed it put it in the opposite way of the water flow, and i'd like to turn it around. When I unscrew the valve, a flood of water comes pouring out and I can't figure out how to stop it so that i might be able to assess the situtaion. Any ideas?

It could be the equipment is below the water level. In that case remove the pump basket and put a tennis ball in the skimmer hole. That should stop the flow.

I haven't been able to locate the leak in my pool the only clue I have it's my spa drains lower than my pool water level.. any suggestions

I had same problem . Changed out my check valve. But it still would slowly drop water level in my jacuzzi. I finally change out my diverter valve and it fixed it.

My pool drained over a foot of water during the night when pump was off. Spa level was ok. Next day i took the automatic sweeper hose and put it in the spa, again the pump was off and the following day same thing happened ...a foot of water also drained from the spa. I do not see a check valve in the system . I do have a CVA-24t valve. What could be wrong??????

Leave it in pool suction mode, turn the valve to spa return. It will fill up quickly.

So as it is right now, my pool is not pumping water, the robot wont' work, the hot tub drains. That tells me the actuator that stopped working is the one that controls the valve that allows water to come from the pool to the equipment. Can I take off the actuator and manually turn the valve so that I can repower the system to get the filter/pump/robot going? I have a service call in for them to come fix it, but I don't want to have the pool not being filtered until they get here as this happened Friday night.

what about when you go to turn the spa on, and the it just starts draining down and the pool gets hot and the water goes into the pool and the water is still being returned to the tub?

The spa suction valve is turned wrong or if you have an automated system the valve actuator is not working. Maybe send me a photo of your valves and I can advise: www.swimmingpoollearning.com/

Oh I don"t own the spa, I was recently down in a vacation home in south florida where this pool and spa was. Thanks anyway. One more thing, i noticed when this switch was on, the pool pump only pumped water from the spa not out of the pool. So when the spa was drained, the pump starting to run dry, it was just really weird. Thanks again!

It could be another issue. Also check for a leak maybe.

P=rho*g*h If spa is above pool level (h), and If water can pass between them somehow, spa will drain to pool level. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just make Sure that (pool+spa) system As a whole is not losing water (which of course would then be a problem) Good luck

OMG I have never figured out why my Spa drains to 50% after I turn the pump off. I went as far as buying plugs for each of the returns to see if it was that :) I dont have a check valve so I assume that is what I need ?

Yes, a check valve will solve the problem in most cases.
