*08/07/2015* A new online course is being created right now called "Selling your craft : Getting to your first $10,000 month". There is an early bird pre-order price of $19 right now, afterwards it will cost $97. Grab it here -- gumroad.com/l/...
I've been asked many times to show off my spoon carving tool kit.
In this video I go into detail with some of the tools I use which are my carving axe, Mora hook knife, my carving knives, my Nic Westermann twca cam, and a kolrossing knife. This can easily be a bushcraft spoon carving kit if stored in a tool wrap.
If your starting out and you dont have all the tools you need,
you can get most of them right here

A great and informative walk through Jeff, lovin how you did the mods on the Moras. All being well I should be visiting Nic at his workshop later in the year to forge some tools. Many thanks for taking the time to share this bro ~Peace~

Hi Jeff! Love the videos, been making spoons for 5 months! Find it helps me unwind after a long day. Finding your channel a great recourse for all the questions I have. Could I suggest a video about your war on not using sandpaper? Perhaps the cuts, tips and techniques you used to get such clean lines? I'm attempting the same but find my spoons never look neat enough. I've put this down to lack of skill, not sharp enough tools or wood not being green enough. Keep up the great work my man!
@lotsofwoods
@lotsofwoods 9 лет назад
Tom starley thanks for the encouraging comment! Im always glad to hear my videos are helping guys along. Unwinding is important! I gotta find out how to do that haha. I do want to make a video on the war with sandpaper. Thats a perfect title for it actually! Im really just waiting for the right time where my wife can hold the cam.. I have no idea if im in the shot until after recording for 20 mins, and I go inside to find out its out of focus or the camera is aimed at my foot or something lol. I will make a video, but really its about having that sharp edge for a shiny finish on a spoon, and then for clean lines, it really helps to have a spoon that you just pick up and touch up every now and then as your eye for detail improves.. What I did was made an eating spoon, and as I would be eating, and looking at it, finding all its flaws, I developed an eye for things.. So I would recommend that.. make a spoon, eat with it everyday, and go back to the knife and touch it up. It takes a long time to train the eye! So dont be discouraged. Sorry for the winded comment, hope it helps! - Jeff

I do not think hardness is the main problem with chipping, I have a few handforged knives made by Antti Mäkinen that are probably above 63 on the rockwell scale (material removal on waterstones is considerably slower than with a known 63 rw knife) and they do not chip at all. The great job done with heat treating in general may play a part as well, but so does care, because steel usually only chips (or rolls when its a softer steel) when it hits something harder than itself. I am sure you know this, just saying that I personally always double check for any dirt or grit on my workpiece or chopping block :)
@lotsofwoods
@lotsofwoods 9 лет назад
It chips the most when finishing a birch kuksa. On a cut where I roll the knife for an inside rounded corner, it breaks the edge of the knife. I got pretty frustrated with it because it just didnt seem like that should happen. Im definitely no pro with steel, but I just know it is brittle when the the temper is too great.. or somthing like that! Thanks for the wisdom though drownthedays !
@drownthedays
@drownthedays 9 лет назад
Well then I guess somethings off with the temper like you said, the wood is basically prying the edge apart. It is fairly hard to find the right mix of hardness and toughness, but it should be expected, especially with more expensive knives. Plus the guys at mora seem to know very well what they are doing, as the middle laminated layer is really hard, but tough enough as well. I really dig that applewood axe handle by the way, it sure looks the part.

I'm using a Ben Orford sold knife. The small one. I definitely need a larger carving knife, though. May give the Mora a looksee, though my first spoon knife was a Mora and sort of put me off the brand. I'll see past it and give their straight carving knife a chance, though. Can't beat the price, that's for sure. Where did you get your red sharpening compound? I got the green stick from Lee Valley, but I'm unsure what all the colours mean, or if they're even uniform across brands. I don't want to buy a red from company X only to find that it's more akin to the green from company Y...
@lotsofwoods
@lotsofwoods 9 лет назад
Hey Raindance Bushcraft thanks for the commment! I got the red compound from a place in the states, it was in a little buffing wheel combo kit with a white compound and red compound. For a long time the red sat on the shelf and I was only using the green, but I've had much better results using the compounds in stages. I would personally just buy a pack of say 3 bars from whoever and give them a try next time my bars run out. And as far as the Mora straight carving knife goes, Im sold. Its chea and im not ure I would get better results with another knife.

Hi Jeff! can you suggest the stages of sharpening the carving axe? i would start with a file and then continue with 240,600 amd 1000 grid sanding paper.you think this is a good approach? love your work and I wish you all the best in new year!

thanks again for the video. the mora 106 and the 120 are both great knives. my favorites. BUT yes sharpening is my weak point. i am always afraid that i am going to make my edge worst. i am scared of it when it comes to my hooks. i also have a TWCA. i bought it from jarrod stone dali. so i think its made by Nick Westerman. im not sure if its a 60mm or a lil smalller. i have not sharpened it yet. would you suggest to just strope the inside at first? or both sides? the edges are still good. i havent used it all that much. but i want to keep it keen. so should i strope just inside or both? haha i actually try to limit my use at times because I want to keep the edge good. i have watched videos but only practice can really work when it comes to sharpening. so to make a short story long. i get what your saying...i have never seen a video on sharpening the TWCA. so if your in the mood???
@lotsofwoods
@lotsofwoods 9 лет назад
I may be in the mood for a video on sharpening the Twca cam after I build my pole lathe! If you have your twca cam in a vise, and you have dowels with wet sand paper, just be steady with all your passes. I personally havent touched the outside of the twca cam with anything but a strop, only the inside with the wet sand paper. I would say just be careful and you should be fine! Carelessly taking away material for sure youll make it worse.. you gotta do it at somepoint right! This is how I learned! Thanks for the comment though bangbangcfp

Just anneal the brittleness away by putting it into a oven at 400° degrees for 45 minutes. Let it cool naturally and anneal one more time & again cool naturally. This will eliminate that brittleness & you'll be much happier with it's perfomance.

Hey Jeff great video.. This fort sureis going to help the novice in finding the correct tools for the job.. I think here is a little info that would help them also.. The Mora 164. If you remove the secondary bevel it will carve like a dream.. And that Deepwoods knife. It is a style of blade that is for like basswood carving.
@lotsofwoods
@lotsofwoods 9 лет назад
Thanks for the info Jimmy Mead! I did play with that bevel a little bit, but by the time I had figured it out, my nic westermann was already here. I tried Robin Woods spoon carving knife and actually didnt mind it that much. As far as the deepwoods knife, I used it for quite a while, but found that after carving birch Kuksa's there was a type of cut that just chipped the blade so quick. I use the tip of the mora knife so much now. I use the deepwoods for just quick roughing out to save the edge on the mora.

That straight edged Deepwood Ventures knife is either ground wrong, and/or likely tempered improperly for that type of grind. There's no material to support that fine of an edge angle. That is a VERY thin apex with only a slight convex to support it. That knife would need good steel with a very good heat treat cycle to refine the grain...or it would need a standard scandi/V grind. Also, those don't look like chips so much as a rolled edge, which would mean it's over tempered. From the video anyhow. If you bought it from him I'd call him and discuss it. As a maker, I'd warranty that knife and provide you something more appopriate.
@lotsofwoods
@lotsofwoods Год назад
My wood carving career is over now so no worries about that knife lol. I had finishing knives that were very thin
@CrisAnderson27
@CrisAnderson27 Год назад
@@lotsofwoods thin is good for a lot of purposes, particularly at the edge if the knife is hardened and tempered properly. My kitchen knives...the edge will flex over my thumbnail...at 65HRC, but are still tough enough to go through an apple seed without an issue. It's unfortunate you don't carve anymore! I'm just starting (as a function of making sloyd, curved/hook, and other carving knives) and I've enjoyed your channel quite a bit.

How do you attach the Nick Westerman hook knives to the wood handle? Do you just drill a hole in the wood the same diameter at the round tang and super glue it in or what? Thanks
@lotsofwoods
@lotsofwoods 9 лет назад
Exactly what you suggested Phil brownred. I drilled the hole a little smaller than the largest part of the tang and super glue!

hey man thanks I really need some one to give advice on tools I've been looking at this english dude he's very good he's even famous over in England he makes a spoon carving kit I'm sorry dudes name is Robin Woods maybe you heard of him he's got a axe and crook knife and carving knife for 175.00 I really don't have that much for all that now cause I start buying pieces here and there I'm looking for a carving knife that mora you talked about sounded perfect for me I need a crook knife I bought the double edge one from mora and I'm cutting the scrap out of my self but you say don't buy the mora right hand crook knife is there a cheaper model you'd suggest? I don't have a lot of money I've been teaching Bush craft to some local kids and I'd like to have the right tools.Thanks for. the video and the advice

Paul Henry Theres a few other guys that make spoon carving knives, and yea with the double edged knife I would cut myself too... I hear Del Stubbs makes a nice spoon knife, Deepwood ventures, and Nic Westermann. With the axe, spend $5-$10 on an antique hatchet and learn to sharpen it!

@jamesritchie6899
@jamesritchie6899 9 лет назад
No bevel usually means a flat grind, and it's the easiest of all to sharpen, if you have experience with it. Many love it. I prefer the Scandi grind that comes on most Mora knives, but a flat grind does have some advantages when slicing.
@CrisAnderson27
@CrisAnderson27 Год назад
A Scandi grind IS a flat grind...it simply has a more obtuse edge angle (bringing the junction between edge and flat lower down the blade). The Deepwood Ventures knife is a mild convex grind.
