Big up for this video. I knew something had happened behind the scenes between you and Jesse. The fact you split at the same time Devon left and Meg dialled back and both joined you was too coincidental to not imply something had happened between you all. And I also think you made the right choice in keeping it behind closed doors and not making a big drama about it. It's just unfortunate that these recent events have somewhat forced your hand on that, but your careful wording to remain as amicable as possible in this video carried as much weight as it needed to. I unsubbed from Quackalope last year because I didn't jive with their approach either, and I feel genuinely sorry for you that you often get bundled up with them, because your approaches to content creation are polar opposites. I fear it'll be a long time before your association to them will start to slip, and I really hope you don't get brought down too much by this whole issue. Keep it up Alex. We're still here and supporting you.
I always felt that Quackalope and BoardgameCo stopped working together because of Quackalope unethical practices and Quackalope's constant cringe jokes about whisky and drinking for breakfast. Quackalope just looked to me like a high functioning alcoholic
I found you because of Quack, but I soon after checked out of his channel due to click bait titles, whining and dramatics. I find your content well informed and you seem like an honest guy to me. Keep up the good work.
@@BoardGameCo Well, you are one of the channels who is doing REALLY well, but you deserve it. Your content is great. I have no idea how you do it. You knock out 5-8 videos a week with seeming relative ease. Each of those videos would take me 2-3 days to make :) Don't forget me if you wanna collab on something. Apparently, I can teach games quite well. :)
Honest, transparent, gives actual opinions, just seems to try to do things right... part of why I stay here and have alway enjoyed Alex's content. If you've been with both channels you saw the change at Quack and also saw Alex distance himself. THAT speaks a lot to integrity. Thanks for your content and please stay true.
You’re a great dude Alex. Not only for staying in your lane and being respectful, but for how you manage your channel and content. You understand that through what you do, there is inherently some influence over people. And while you could lean into it and hype people up, you give a lot of caveats and considerations try to balance your feedback.
My thoughts exactly! I’ve been subbed since well under 1,000 subscribers and will likely continue to be forever. There’s a reason I unsubscribed from quackalopes channel even before they parted ways but have stayed here.
@@BoardGameCo I always found it a bit odd that you worked together for so many videos since you seemed like a polar opposites and he seemed a bit of gray area kind of guy and you were always upfront and honest about your dealings. It wasn't surprising to me that you separated yourself from him because there were flashes of Quackalopes character flaws that I didnt like that Im sure you were intimately more familiar with and lead you to step away from him
Thank you for your honesty You have a subscriber. What has occurred between Quackalope and Into the Unknown will change gaming channels, reviewers and how their followers see them.
"I'm a boring person at parties. You wanna talk about sports and I wanna talk about boardgames". Instant sub lol. Always enjoyed your honest approach friend
I’m not sure what the controversy Is, I found and subscribed to you and Quackalope very early in each of your careers. I found really really cool when you both found each other. I felt like it was two content creators that I really enjoyed were like boys and I even had this dream that one day I would meet you both and we would play board games together, so I was understandably sad when y’all stopped doing content together and noticed that y’all had gone your separate ways. I understand thought that life can be peculiar sometimes and relationships change and that’s fine. I wish you and Jesse the best and I will continue to view and be subscribed to each of your channels. I wish of both of you the best.
You've often had these conversations so we, your audience, have had most of this information on how you operate. The transparency is very appreciated. We need you to have relationships in the industry so you can bring us content you will have access to and we could not. Keep enjoying what you do. Look at the angry comments in every KS project from day 2, there are some loud and unhappy people. Ignore them. You cannot convince or appease them. Keep doing you.
As someone who recently unsubscribed and stopped supporting the “other channel” … please know that I appreciate your openness and transparency and I’m happy to be one of your newest followers starting today! 🎉
The points I forgot to talk about. Sponsored Spots - I do occasional sponsor spots within videos, where I will talk about a product or service, e.g. a board game table or mint mobile or audible or whatever. These are always disclaimed clearly in the video, referred to as the sponsor or partner of the video, and currently cost generally between $150-$250 per video that they appear in. The Chip Theory Sword/Gifts - Not something that has happened often, but I've gotten "swag" from companies here and there. I recognize the bias, will try to avoid it, and will try to make note of it in videos when I cover their games if the gift has "meaningful value". Meaning I'd rather not have to disclaim things because I got a coaster....not because of hiding things but rather it would get annoying all the time. But I do acknowledge something that has meaningful value I should disclaim. I will attempt to do so when covering games from a company that has done something like that, and I ask for your grace if I forget to do so due to lack of mindfulness about something down the road.
Genuinely: Charge the sponsors more, if you can, and use that to turn all the board-game reviews unpaid. Even pay for your OWN trips to the companies! I'm seriously. Grow off the backs of regular youtuber schlock to keep the industry content pure. That would be wonderful.
I'd love to have a conversation with you sometime. My experience is from the social media/written content side. Doing a sponsored post for just 150 to 250 given the size of your channel seems ridiculously small, unless you're going for quantity over a month versus just a few larger brand deals. I think you should be looking for sponsorships outside of the game hobby, at a rate of thousands of dollars per video or month instead of hundreds of dollars.
Why would someone think you are associated with Jesse? It's apparent you and Devin had a disagreement with Jesse about something, and that's not really our business. But anyone thinking you are linked together haven't been actually watching the channel.
I usually think that...but the amount of people still linking us is often a lot. Not everyone is an active viewer. Also and somewhat unrelated, Jesse's falllout with Devon is a completely different thing.
I'll have a few comments here. Some serious some not so much. Let's start with something fun: Zelda. Sir, you'd do quite well I feel with a "part time" video game channel :P What are your thoughts on open world design and the new Zelda?! I expect an in depth 25 minute video soon with an answer!
Happy Everything: There is also a natural eliminating factor that prevents bad games from our channel coverage. If you see a game and they ask for a review and it looks like crap to you, you aren't going to even bother trying to review it. I'd love to hear how many times you'd estimate you decline coverage of a game. If it's anything like mine it's A TON. I have x amount of time to spend on games. I will pick the top games that I think I'll like/love to fill that and anything else is just naturally removed from my channel before it even begins. Meaning, the trend is positive because you're only seeing the games that made it past that selection. It's survivorship bias. You only see those and have no line of sight to the ones you flat out reject.
Doing this for fun: Someday perhaps we can have a chat as I'd love to hear your thoughts on this further. You say you do this for fun, and before in the video say what you do is a job and I wonder to myself if those can be at odds. Real world: There are days where I don't want to film a video, or don't even want to play a board game. It happens. Job means you do it, for fun means you don't. That is, a job can force you to do things you might not think is fun. Perhaps like turning down something that is fun? Not saying you should, just musing over here, much about myself as well. I'm not sure there's even a "right" answer to it all. IMO, you just do the best you feel you can do and people are either okay with it or they aren't. Sincerity is important and you obviously have that so I don't think you need to worry too much about it. :)
THIS is how you respond to controversy! Love how you are authentic and honest with everything. I found this channel some time ago and still one of the few I follow. Fun yet professional.
I worked for an agency where the big thing was to always avoid doing anything that gave the impression of impropriety. This is likely a case where there was no evil actor, just a case of emails and conduct not passing the "sniff test". In this sphere make sure you are understood. Dont leave the door open for interpretation
Yup, that's kind of what I've been saying with the recent drama. Alot of the drama going on at the moment is just horrible optics do to timing, wording and a whole lot of open space for interpretation.
Especially when it comes to communications between people who have known each other a long time. I would not be surprised if some of the tumult was not simply due to verbiage being used that the parties understood to mean one thing due to their relationship but means something else to outsiders looking in.
@@cr-pol Yup, from the inside I could see why ITU took offense to the review. You're dealing with a massive undertaking of working on a massive game(Kingdom's of forlorn) while starting the 2nd printing of your previous massive success and you have a content creator trying to cut into your time because they "don't get it". You hearing through the grapevine that everyone is loving your game and the one guy that trashes it is a creator known for paid advertisements that's been courting you for months and you've rejected. To outsiders like myself is questionable at worst I can't imagine what it seemed like to the ITU team.
I’m sad that you have to deal with this but appreciate your quick and professional response. I hope this doesn’t consume your day/week and that you get to play some amazing games today! Hugs.
I don't know what happened but to me you tried your best to stay transparent throughout your channel's journey and it shines through your words. Keep up the good work man. Your one and only supporter from Bangladesh 😁
Friends in the industry: Definitely the hardest part! So many awesome people in this industry it's really hard for sure! I spoke about this somewhat before but I've felt it's a bit like a manager and their employees. You can be friendly. You can get to know their family. You can laugh, have fun, hang out, and enjoy each other's company. In fact, that makes you a pretty great manager - assuming your responsibility to something beyond that friendship is followed if needed. It can really suck, but if that employee, the one you know the names of their kids, know they just bought a house, etc. If they need to have some correct at work, you do it. You do it in a kind manner, in a caring manner, but it needs to be done. You have a responsibility that supersedes that friendship. There are some boundaries that you and the employee recognize and know and respect. I also often think of The Post - good movie btw, but kind of covers that. Anyway, I guess that's where I'm currently at with it all. I am no longer on that island all alone as you so aptly put it. And I recognize there will be some people that will forever see me on that island. But I know there are plenty now in the industry that are willing to be friendly, knowing that small bit of reservation that will always be there. In a way perhaps a better way to put it is your family and your friends. As much as you might like your friends, you'll do what's right for your family. It doesn't mean you don't like your friends, it's just that there's something more important and any good friend will understand and respect the distinction.
You want to get paid for your time, do it. I have no problem with sponsored content. You are one of few content creators I trust to provide an honest review regardless of sponsorship or not. Sucks to hear this is impacting you when it shouldn’t be.
I saw the comment about the two of you separating because of Gamefound. I thought it was odd and didn't make sense, especially given the video he made about the time of separation. I'm glad you cleared that up, because the two of you have different approaches to content and that's why I ended up unfollowing him after the split. Didn't have anything to do with the relationship, just a clear difference in content direction. Anyway, sorry you keep getting brought up with his drama when there was a clear separation. You are doing great!
Yeah, once upon a time in a video Jesse said that he was distancing because of gamefound. Which unfortunately is simply false, but until now I just didn't want to get into any back and forth because what was the point.
@BoardGameCo It would make a lot more sense if you distanced from him as a Gamefound employee as to not hurt Gamefounds relationship with publishers than the other way around. Guess it doesn't matter now because this is where we are now. Oh well, only thing to do now is move forward!
@@BoardGameCo That sucks and must have been disappointing. Sorry this happened. Any chance this was an honest mistake/different perception of reality? I wanted to wait how the AOT issue plays out but this might change things. I had always wondered whether anything had happened between you (and I also wondered why Devon joined forces with you rather than Jesse). But it's also OK we don't know everything. So it's also fine if you don't reply, I'll stay subscribed (and not just on this platform). Thank you, Alex!
Alex, Alex, Alex... I am here for the board games / dad jokes. Unless you started posting videos about, i dont know, knitting lets say, I am not going anywhere. I love your content, you seem like a cool dude, I love when your family interrupts your videos, and you're definitely someone I want to play board games with. Never change. Yours Truly, ThatGuyThat'sStillWaitingForTheDivinityOriginalSinBoardGame.
You're my go to source for board games. Our opinions differ on several games but I know you will always be up front and honest. That is worth a lot now days. Thank you for your integrity and transparency. I'm here to stay!
Alex, I always have had, and continue to have, the greatest respect for what you do and how you do it and you continue to have my support. Some really salient and well structured points in this video and they are as eloquently put as they need to be. Thanks for not further fanning the flames of the current controversy - it’s not about you and you are caught in the crossfire of guilt by previous association. It’s a crappy thing but something we are all capable of being as we forge relationships in this space. There’s lots of people with lots of opinions trying to cover this issue on information from a handful of emails so it’s refreshing to find you giving it as much information as YOU feel it needs to have. You don’t owe anyone an explanation on why you chose to discontinue collaborating, but thank you for at least addressing it. Like everyone, I have my views on what’s happened but I’m nowhere near enough informed to make speculative analysis. Should bad actors be called out, absolutely and we should be thankful that there are people out there willing to come forward and highlight them. Cleaning house is a constant, never ending process.
Thank you so much Mark; you're truly a prince yourself and I hope you know that. I remember your first video after the sword debacle, you handled everything beautifully.
Oi Alex. I love your ramblings and overly analytical look at board games. I also love how conscious you are about your role as a reviewer and not afraid to release videos about it. It’s like you see reviewing and bias also as a puzzle like the games you play, it’s refreshing to watch. If you ever find your way down under in Oz I would love to move cardboard on a board one day with you. Also, you need to try coffee in Australia! We have some amazing world class roasters.
In the end we are talking about board games here. “Drama” surrounding the business practices of other channels is virtually meaningless the grand scheme of things. I appreciate your upfront manner in disclosing paid for material on your channel. You have the right and responsibility to make a living. Ultimately it’s up to us as the audience to take what anyone says with a grain of salt. I would never buy a game or invest in a Kickstarter based on one persons review. I like your productions because they do explain the games well and give both your likes and dislikes. That said we may have different opinions so you shouldn’t feel at all responsible for how I spend my money. I think your channel is one of the best out there.
In the grand scheme of things few things are truly important. But for at least 3 small businesses this has potential fallout that can be big. And yes, totally agree on the grain of salt. One should watch content to get information, impressions, opinions, but never as a final judgement. Everybody is biased - only a matter of degree and how honest one is about it. Just by having a chat with a person working at a company one might be more understanding and less inclined to rip a game apart - because it's a small company and affects people working there. And most boardgame companies are of the small variety - not exactly uncaring multinationals.
The assumptions are frustrating I’m sure, but I think you handle them super well. Thanks for always being transparent Alex -even if you didn’t owe anyone anything; you’re doing great and always looking forward to your thoughts and excitement for games 🎉
Quit frankly i feel that you SHOULD be able to make a living doing this. Few of us would turn down an opportunity to do what we love and get paid to do it. You put in the work and you're great at what you do and someone HAS to do it. Someone has to be the lucky person that gets to do a ridiculously taxing amount of work and effort to give us quality content. Consistently. I don't aways agree with your opinions (which is of course absolutely normal) but i value your discernment and trust your motives. Admittedly I do blame you for the ludicrous amount of Zombicide I've acquired over the past year but I'll get over that.
I don't usually comment but I wanted to say I'm sorry you're being caught up in all this. As someone who has watched (and enjoyed) a lot of your content over the past few years, it's very clear to me how much you value integrity and transparency. Regardless of the topic, you make an effort to try and consider all perspectives and sides of an issue. It's also evident that you're mindful of what you say and how you say it because you consider how your position/influence might impact your audience and the space more broadly. I think your passion for the hobby is obvious, as is the fact that you're not in this for the money. I have a feeling anyone who has watched enough of your content would arrive at a similar conclusion. However, I know the disproportionate impact that a negative vocal minority can have so I hope you'll keep in mind that there is a larger number of people out there who see who you truly are and appreciate you for it. ❤
Love you and thank you for your channel! :) You are an amazing content creator and one of the very 1st boardgame creator that I subscribed too and I really trust you !!!! I am very grateful for you and will continue to support you!!!
I subbed after watching this. I always appreciated your candor and transparency. I didn't realize there was an active decision to no longer do content with the other channel, but that past relationship was part of why I didn't sub before.
Thank you for being amazing! I always appreciate your dedication and honest ramblings on the hobby. The only grudge I have against you is that you do talk too fast. lol. It's hard to watch your videos at 2x speed like I do with all other RU-vid videos. ;)
Our tastes don’t match as well as myself and other creators, but I subscribe to your channel because I trust you and feel your reviews are the clearest and most informative. In other words, I really like you and how you go about your business. Keep up the great work!
I totally agree with this. I actually enjoy different games from Alex (though I do see 2nd Dawn on his shelf haha) but he just strikes me as a genuine dude, and I like they way he breaks everything down.
Glad you made this video, saw people lumping you in from your past collaborations. We still enjoy your content and will keep watching. These types of things with Quackalope, and Dice Tower before that, and Ant Labs before that is the reason we don't do collaborations 😢
I really came to appreciate your channel after the split with Quackalope. you cover new games, without ignoring older games and give well rounded reviews. Plus, you show your revenues, no one else does that and you are honest about financial success and failures. good luck keeping this channel up and growing, you deserve it for the good work you do.
I didn't even realize there was a drama and I'm so sorry that you've gotten backlash for something you didn't do. I appreciate your continuous transparency and am excited for your future projects (mostly the play throughs).
I occasionally watch your videos when they pop up on my recommendations, but this video has pushed me to subscribe. The transparency and peek behind the curtain is a breath of fresh air and it’s incredibly appreciated. Stay awesome!
Just as with my comment on the video you made on Mythic games issue I need to write a message here again. I think you are the content creator with the highest degree of transparency and credibility. I remember watching one of your first RU-vid videos. It was years back and I was maybe a year or two in the hobby. Honestly, I disliked you a bit, as the way you talked, especially about the games I adored was irritating at first; focused on retail and resell value and game mechanics which from my perspective did not meet what I seek in games and why I play them. But, even though I was a bit irritated with your approach, my impressions were: Wow, this guy is to the point, highlights aspects of industry I never thought about, and is honest with no ill blood or fanboy attitude. This is a guy whose opinion I trust and respect, even though if I disagree with him. I kept returning to your channel, and until today you made me invest in at least a dozen of KSs, all of which were great experience to play, and still hold their resale value. (I even dodged a bullet with Darkest Dungeon, as I ordered only the core game, and I got it. Game is brilliant by the way, the company not so much :/) I also will not enter into Jesse vs ITO debate, even though I realized I did not watch his channel for months now, and it was an easy step to unsubscribe from his channel. But to you I would like just to say: please don't change. You are one of the few channels left that I still follow and respect. Even with this video, you confirmed that, and I am sorry that actions of others had a negative spillover to your channel as well. Take care and keep up the good work. Subscribers may retreat for a while, but most of them will return and many new will come as there has not remained a lot of quality content for the community on the youtube market.
Alex, i have been subbed to you for a while (on my other channel). While I never watch all your videos as there are tons of other content creators in my feed and cant watch them all, I periodically check in. I never knew how you would be in person, but I met you at Dice Tower West this year and you were extremely kind and generous! I was a bit nervous to talk with you but you made the environment relaxing and the interaction enjoyable. I appreciate you being open, honest, and transparent - and as I grow my own, following those ideas. Keep it up!
Big fan of your channel, Alex. One of the reasons if your openness, honesty and integrity. Wishing you much success. You are bringing a lot of value to me and to the community. Thank you.
I used to watch your channel a lot then unsubscribed as you were doing a lot with Quack and I was never keen on his style among some other things, then the Algorithm lost you in the mix on my feed. Stumbled across this video and you've got a subscriber back (if you care). All the best for continuing the good work.
Alex, you are a great person. I know this video was hard for you to make. But I watch your videos for you. You are a genuine and true person that will tell the truth in all of his videos. And I, along with many others, respect you for that. Pat yourself on the back for doing what you do and loving board games!
I stopped watching Jesse a long time ago because I don't like his new approach and style. I had no idea about this new drama because I'm not interested, and I hate drama. I will continue to support your work.
Keep your head up, these moments don't define you. What defines you is your ability to ignore the noise and continue to do what you love! Once the dust settles regardless of being involved or not (which I understand you aren't), life will continue on. In the end you will have a stronger community for it. Good luck!
I'm always thankful for your honest statements and reviews. That's why I constantly watch your channel and try to understand every words!(English is my second language and still hard to understand even to listen with native speed😅) We're always on your side.
I appreciate your content Alex. I feel like you do things the right way and make the hobby better. You, Devon and Meg make a great team and I will continue to support your channel 👍🏽
The fact that we're living in a society where content creators are being held accountable for their transparency is MORE IMPORTANT than every single other company, organization, corporation, administration and government out there just baffles me. You don't see any other business breakdown their yearly cost and profit. Again, it baffles me.
I'm sorry youre having to go through this. I could imagine that having to distance yourself from someone you might consider a current or former friend must feel horrible, regardless of what they have or haven't done. You're one of the best content creators in our hobby and I hope you continue to make enough money to justify your work.
Thank you Matt. I have both positive and negative things I could say about Jesse, as I'm sure he could have about me...but yes, it does feel scummy to even have to say publicly that I'm not associated. I've been trying to avoid this.
I have been following your channel for about half a year and I have to say that I rarely miss or skip your content. The main reason for that is the honest and quite objective approach to content creation and the hobby itself. I looked up the "other channel" a few months ago and it took me 1 video to understand that something was off with it. It seemed that they intended to spark a controversy in their videos in order to attract views which is something I completely dislike on this or any other social media platform. All in all, keep up the good work Alex, and thank you for putting your heart and soul into this hobby.
I have no clue about the controversy and have never watched Quackalope...that said...I like some of your content and didn't enjoy others, sometimes agree with you, sometimes don't but have never felt you were not giving an honest opinion. Bias is impossible to totally avoid...just be up front about it and it is all good.
Just wanted to drop a comment saying that I appreciate your honesty and how humble you are. I appreciate your time and efforts and my subscription isn't going anywhere. Keep up the good work 😀
The Quack&co channel had a video of the two of you 9 months ago but you said you had not done content with him in over a year? Confused please explain.
I forgot about Quack&Co, we continued to do videos there infrequently and so that may have ended only 9 months ago. If that invalidates the point for you, then so be it. I think it's pretty clear I stopped doing content with Quackalope a long time ago.
For those of us who are subscribers and regular content watchers i truely believe in your honesty here, it's much appreciated. Hope to see you at UKGE if you're planning another trip to England this year.
Alex I don't watch all your videos, but have seen enough to know you are genuine and also everything you said in this video is true. I love so many content creators, some who get paid and acknowledge it like DT and Rhado and other smaller creators who only have 100 or less subs. I am sure they are just trying to also talk about a hobby we all love.
Sorry you had to be involved with the issue Alex. Your channel is honestly the boardgame related content I watch on a regular basis. Will be supporting you in the long run!
Does the formula of your reviews by representing both pros and cons for games ALWAYS balanced? I don't mean "balanced" by saying things that you didn't like as much as things that you did, But "balanced" by being completely open and honest about AAAALL the things that you didn't like (or seeing other don't like) AS MUCH as you were - about those which you liked..(?)
I've always been impressed by not only the amount of time you put into making videos but also by the thoughtful nature with which you disclose potential sources of conflict. And you're right, the subs you lost are not worth losing sleep over because you CAN'T CONTROL that or many other things in this world. Best wishes to you and your amazing family--I'm subbed for life, man.
I have no idea what you're talking about. I was a subscriber and unsubscribed. It's because (much like this video) you don't seem to have a coherent plan before you record a video. It's just... all over the place. It was ok at first but it's become a major issue. For example, a recent video you had was about if you were still excited about games you Kickstartered that recently arrived. And in the MIDDLE OF THE VIDEO, you change tactics to "do I REGRET backing them?". A major difference. I didn't comment here to pile on or make you feel bad. Please, please, please, don't misinterpret that. I just came to say that #1, it's not for me, and #2 I hope it's CONSTRUCTIVE criticism as to why you lost me as a subscriber. I honestly wish you all the best in the world.
While I appreciate your goal is constructive feedback, I think my channel and approach just isn't for you. I lost a large amount of subs in a single day due to some controversy in the board game space that I had nothing to do with. That's what this is about. If you unsubbed at the same time, that's a coincidence. While I disagree that I walk into a video without a plan, I completely acknowledge my content is more conversational in nature and that's intentional. If that's putting you off, then it's likely we're not a fit. Thank you for the feedback and wishing you the best as well.
The dictionary definition of integrity should be "Alex Radcliffe from Board Game Co". I don't keep up with BGC content because I just don't have time right now but I'll always find time for your comments on the industry precisely because I trust your transparency. It's disappointing that people are damning you by association (especially an historic association). Keep doing what you're doing in the way you're doing it, Alex!
I'm someone who doesn't actually play board games, but follows this and other channels simply because I'm interested in how the industry functions and how people come up with different approaches to the idea of 'board game'. I don't know about this drama, and these days I don't care about drama, because you never know what's true with drama. But I'm moved to comment on how well you handled all this. I'm always struck by how you can analyze things without getting angry or striking out, and accept that there's going to be situations where people can't get along, and that you can't keep everyone happy all of the time. I'm also always impressed by how you openly discuss things that everyone else seeks to keep secret. As to the unsubscribers, well, either they'll come back or someone will come along to replace them.
Just wanted to say, I'm one of those viewers who criticizes your fast pace/blurred words, and I was very critical of the anti-masking stance you shared a while back. I stopped watching for a good while. I'm glad I checked back in. I've never been more in tune with your position/personality/channel than I am now that I've seen this video. Thank you for your transparency, genuineness, and thoughts. Keep up the good work.
There's a difference between sponsered content and demanding money to alter your negative content to positive content. And that's not what you're doing. So you've lost a few followers. You'll gain more in the near future.
Sigh… I don’t know - I’m a bigger fan of Alex himself and his channel than I am of Jessie and himself and this channel…. But i find this a little annoying really. That Alex did this and/of celt the need to do this. Boardgamers seem to be so over-filled with angst. Re: Alex, still a big fan and as for Jessie… I give hi a lot of slack on all of this because (a) i din’t think he really did anything wrong and (b) doing campaigns of games like KDM and ATO is not as easy (and is a lot riskier) than doing top 10 videos. And ‘I’ wNt someone doing campaign type content.
Hey Alex, sorry to hear you are getting caught up in drama. I have been a huge fan of your content for a while and want to see it continue. I have always found you to be transparent and consistant.
Thank you for this video. To be honest, I unsubscribed to your channel because of Quackalope. I subscribed to His Channel, noticed his approaches and decided that his opinion is of little value to me. Thankfully you uploaded tons of videos after you quit your job and your videos reappeared in my feed. (I was worried for you when you said you quit your job) I watched again and I noticed you, Jesse and Shirley do not do videos anymore. That's when I re-subscribed. I figure something might have happened between the three of you. . I just want to say thank you for staying genuine and dare to go against the popular in board games. We do not agree on a lot of games ( I don't like Terraforming Mars) but I value your honest approach to games. Because of you, I dare to try beyond the popular board games myself and backed games on Kickstarter. It's unfortunate that you got dragged into this. I appreciate you being transparent and not bashing the other. Losing subscribers can be a little scary. Your content has reached the other side of the world literally. I am from Indonesia. Keep up the good work. You lost me for a few months and got me back based on the quality of your content. You will get your subscribers back!
I'll be honest, I haven't been a fan in the past. Like you said, I found content that fit what I wanted better. That being said, this video felt genuine and respectful and I give you major props for that. Happy to see you pursuing everything in a way that makes you happy.
Alex, your approach to content creation and its difference from Quackalope could not be more clear. I've subscribed to your channel for a while. I've never subbed to Quackalope, but have caught their videos from time to time. Their "opinions" always felt a bit disingenuous. You've always been very transparent, especially when there was a potential bias or conflict of interest. Your love of board games has always shined through the cloud of a potential pay day. Thanks for what you do.
Alex, I understand that loosing subscriptions is not good, but maybe you don't deserve those that left. I like what you do, I like that you do things with heart and joy, and I am all in for you getting payed for what you like. I don't care that you get paid because I know you will never give a 100% positive just to make someone happy. You pass your feelings and we love that. So please be transparent, but get what you need for the channel to florish and you to live properly. Do what you need, but don't change who you are and how you do it. Keep up, you have all my support.
My main takeaways from this are a) how do you write, shoot, edit and upload 50 videos a month whilst also doing a day job and having time to play games, and b) this reminds me of something I read somewhere awhile back, possibly Alan Watts, 'would you rather do something that pays really well but makes you miserable, or do something you enjoy for less money?'. You've clearly been fortunate enough to chose the latter.
I think Alex comes across as a Kickstarter hype man to a lot of people because his enjoyment of games is infectious, even if the game he is covering is just okay.
Just want to say thank you for all your work and board game content you continue to provide. Here to stay and appreciate all transparency you have shared. Looking forward to more content and coverage in the future.
Hey I don't know what it is, but there seems to be weird background audio on your video. I don't know if it's apparent for other people watching this video, but just thought I'd mention it. Like background static or something (used headphones, might be more apparent there).
Thank you for your clear explanation. I had watched you in the past and enjoyed and valued your reviews. However I gave up when you collaborated with Quackalope just because he did not seem to know any of the games in depth and I didn’t like his style. I will watch you again now.
