MY STORY | Balmain Staff Told Me I'm FAT 

Of course not always, but at times, when you go into a somewhat expensive store, I notice that the sales associate tends to act a bit snobby. Like what is up with this attitude. You're just there to help the customers pick out what they need. You're not there flaunting your personal collection of high end brand items. What part of the sales associate job makes you think you're better than everyone else?

They spend thousands of hours designing and making the clothes, they spend thousands of dollars making this videos, photo-shoots, runway shows so that at the end of the day the SALES PERSON can ruin your whole experience at the store.

After she 'congratulated' you, I would have told her 'that's why you're the sales assistant and not the designer'.Boom.

I was 38 when I got married, and yes, I'm quite large. When I went shopping for a wedding dress, the first sales person I spoke with asked if I was shopping for my daughter. I told her no, I'm shopping for a dress for myself, and she gave me a look like, "someone's actually going to marry YOU?!?" After a moment of looking me up and down, she said "We don't have ANYTHING your size." Got the feeling she couldn't imagine anyone my size even wanting a wedding dress. But I did eventually find a beautiful dress, MY size, and looked like a very buxom princess on my day! :)

I'm pregnant and slightly insane right now, if I had been with you, that sales associate would have been seriously reconsidering her life choices, by the time I was done with her.

I used to work at a jewellery store next to a Tiffany. I have to say, I got a fair amount of large ticket sales from just showing genuine kindness and treating everyone the same. The number of customers I had come in who had been at Tiffany, were treated like shit and so changed their mind and walked into my store was ridiculous. The sincere thanks I received was disgraceful, because it shows how poorly they were treated elsewhere. I made dozens of 12-30k sales in that store, which Tiffany could have easily snapped up before I even got a chance, had they not judged a book by it's cover.

I went into a newly opened "high end" gym with the intention of joining. When I spoke with the sales associate she looked me up and down then with a smug look she said that I would not fit in with the clientele that worked out in the facility. Without missing a beat I told her that I certainly "fit in" and that she was quite rude and that my medical colleagues will hear of this incident and would not be joining as well. I then asked to speak to management. Furthermore, I called the owners of the gym and relayed what transpired. The gym was apologetic and offered me 1 year free membership.

So ridiculous considering Balmain dresses some of the bigger butts of Hollywood-Kartrashians. Kim would look ridiculous wearing regular civilian clothes that were not fitted or specifically designed for her. If all of us were able to have clothes fitted to us we would look so different. That is what young people don't get yet.

I was told by a sales assistant that none of the clothes would fit me. I grabbed my size put it on, walked to the counter, gave her the finger and said she can shove her commission up her arse. I went another day when those two weren't working and I had GREAT service. So I bought it and asked if I could talk to the manager for great service. I then slipped in the name of the two other ladies and was told that it was their last day and the were already fired for "unprofessionalism". Slightly happy.

Are those 2k dislikes Balmain employees?

It kind of sounds to me like they actually did know your size, but wanted to trick you into buying a much bigger blazer so that you would end up having to spend even more money for them to alter it for you. And yeah, on top of that they probably were just snobby and jealous that you could afford a Balmain blazer and that you're thin.

You're clearly not able to mistake someone's size by that much, she was being passive aggressive....most likely jealous. I'd make a complaint to management.

Many decades ago my grandfather got the ultimate revenge on a rude sales staff. He was in NYC and went into a Rolls Royce dealership to buy my grandmother a car. He was dressed very casually (he hated suits) and was ignored by the staff. At some point he was approached but only to be asked rudely what he thought he was doing there. Offended by the rude treatment, he left.....Then, to make a statement to the sales associates who first ignored and were subsequently rude to him, he bought the entire dealership, fired the sales associates involved, and later sold the dealership (minus a car for my grandmother.) I guess those people got the message “don’t judge a book by its cover” loud and clear!

My surgeon once told me a story. He is quite small and doesn’t wear obviously expensive stuff. He went to Hermès to buy a handbag for his wife. He had decided to spend a maximum of $40’000 (Mind you, the man has 6 vintage Ferrari). The sales assistant wasn’t willing to give proper support and even told him, he shouldn’t look at a specific handbag because it was very expensive, not even talking to him about the budget he had in mind. He left and ordered the bag in a boutique in St. Moritz. That scene from Pretty Woman comes to mind, when Julia Roberts goes back to the boutique with all the shopping bags, telling the staff they had made a stupid mistake.

Why oh why did you not complain to management!? I've worked in retail for a good portion of my life and would NEVER tolerate this attitude from one of my employees. Please people, complain about employees like this. People should not get away with stuff like this and management wants to know. Employees like this are bad for business, as seen here. They lost a potential sale with you.

I was in Harrods dressed like a tramp with leggings and hoodie, and got a very frosty reception...but you should have seen their faces when I bought a 3k watch from their colleague 🤪😂

I request a size; then if challenged in a way that is rude & doesn’t make sense, I say “I requested a size, not advice.”

I was told by a Vivienne Westwood sales assistant a few years ago that " Vivienne Westwood doesn't design for fat people " to my face ...... I just walk away

she was just being petty, passive aggressive and jealous that you could afford a balmain blazer and she was just behind a counter. LOL , I'm glad you weren't hurt, this would have reduced someone to tears or worse triggered an eating disorder!!! If this had happened to me as a teen I would have simply stopped eating. sad but true.

Do not play the basic sales woman game. Always act confident and unbothered even if you're in "jeans t shirt" shopping at Hermes. I am from Paris and I can assure you we are full of those. Most of them actually want you to feel embarassed because they are kind of bored and get a high off of working in luxury. You don't want an opinion you want to try that damn blazer so next time just ask her with a smile to do her job or leave immediately.

I went into Victoria's Secret once and had a saleslady run after me shouting "Ma'am, I don't think we have anything in your size here!" I let her catch up to me and I said "Does your perfume come in sizes now?" She laughed, somewhat self-consciously and said "Well, of course not." I told her "I'm here to get a bottle of perfume for my sister's birthday. And I didn't appreciate you yelling across the store that I'm too fat to shop here. I know that perfectly well." I have never been back to VS ever again. As a plus size person, I know the pitfalls of SWF (shopping while fat).

Wow, I work at a designer consignment shop and I treat my customers like gold. That is truly horrible. So sorry this happened to you.

Don't feel bad, just remember...you are SHOPPING in that high end store....they are only working in it. I was shopping in Louboutin for some knee high boots...the sales assistant told me that my size wouldn't fit my calf. Charming! They did fit.

I dont get why sales associates in expensive stores would feel like they are better. I mean reality is that the customer can actually own and buy expencsive pieces of clothing while sales assistant cant afford it with his/her monthly wage. I would be depressed to sell clothes that cost more than my salary.

The reality is that whether the store is high-end luxury or H&M, it's the job of the sales crew to get you to spend your money on their product. Ergo, you as the customer is the one with the power - even if you are in Hermes but have a Walmart budget. Snobbery on their part is completely counter-productive. Never ever spend your money in a store where the sales crew make you feel uncomfortable. They'll soon learn.

A little personal experience from me-When i was a teen i had the opportunity to work in a very expensive boutique with mostly clients of high class and even celebrities from time to time so i can say i have a little experience in this field . I always treated my clients with respect and kindness no matter how they looked and if they bought or not. One of the biggest mistakes in retail is to treat someone bad purely based on how they are dressed , their size and YOUR views about how much they are worth and be rude just because you are not i a good mood, this just shows bad skills , bad manners and non professionalism. My clients were gods and they were treated as such , thats why i made many regular customers and my boss was pleased and my customers were please to shop in a friendly environment . Not everyone is meant to work in retail and no matter if you are working for Balmain or the pound store you need to do your job right ,dont be fucking rude and dont insult people just because you have a bad day this is non of the client’s concern and at the end of the day your salary depends on them and this is what you were paid to do in the first place.

Imagine how much worse the service you received would have been if you actually were a size 18 UK.

A similar thing like that happened to me at a Louis Vuitton store, I went in to purchase a purse and did not dress up, I just wore my crappy jeans and shirt, and the sales lady just ignored me and went directly to these two teen girls that were all dressed up. But the other sales clerk that took care of me got a large sale and the teens left without a purchase. I just felt like laughing at her but I just took my new purse and left.

I guess that sales associate never saw the movie “pretty woman.” 😂😂

I'm a manager in retail and a huge advocate of customer service, Jesus Christ!! How on earth is such a person employed there?

I managed a lingerie boutique in Dallas, TX. A woman called me in tears one afternoon because a sales person in the lingerie department at Neiman Marcus, North Park handed her a plastic surgeon's business card. I sold her one of everything I had in her size...and we had fun! Just a note to those of you not in the know: back in the day (even as late as the early 2000's) commissions in retail could make one a very solid hourly wage of more than $20/hour on a 10a-6p schedule, which wasn't bad for a "starving" college student. Some people made over $100k/year selling stuff like china, haute couture, and women's shoes. Doubt if it's like that any more. Thanks for posting. People like this need to be removed from their comfort zones.

Im a guy, litterally covered in tattoos and I use to look kinda rough... Recently I've been getting into fashion and started to dress more "fancy". It was hard at the start because I knew people in the store didn't tried to help me because of the way I look. I find women who work in designer shops are extremely stuck up. I had an experience in a shop where i had gone in to buy some specific items of clothing i had my eye on. Well the two assistants are talking loud enough for me to hear that i clearly don't have the money to shop there. I'm not their type of customer etc. Unfortunately for them they had a job vacancy up on window where it clearly states the wage is £7.00 an hour. I did point out to them if i'm poor to shop there then they really, really can't afford to shop there. At the end of the day, you're still a shop assistant whether you work at Primark or Balmain.

One time I was in chanel store in Jakarta when i want to buy my first chanel bag, well, I wear jeans and tshirt also a flip flop, the SA didnt even care to look at me, i was asking how much for a chanel classic handbag, and they dont even care to answer! They literally just pretend that they didnt hear me. I was so shocked, I shake my head and go. Then I was in MBS singapore, literally had a plastic bag with briyani rice in it when I walked in to the chanel store, they were so polite, welcoming, everything I wanted in a shopping experience, end up buying my first chanel there and more afterwards.

"MAIN" in french means HAND - SO THESE CHICKS WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A BAL-MAIN IN THE FACE. You are SO PATIENT for staying in the store!!

I don’t know why people feel intimidated by shop clerks, or allow them to bully them with their snobbery... They can’t even afford the clothes they are selling. You are the customer, you are the prize!!! I walk into a store and if a store clerk had even a slight of attitude.... I will immediately look them up and down like trash, ask for the manager, and then cease all communication with the store clerk.... Explain to the manager the problem. Then finish business, and make sure to put the store clerk in his:her place before leaving

Its funny how sales associates of high-end stores tend to be snobby whilst forgetting that they are a *sales associate* . I don't know if being a sales associate for a high end store makes much of a difference when it comes to pay but sweetie you aren't making enough money to be snobby in the first place. Sometimes they can't even afford the products they're selling even with an employee's discount and have the nerve to be assholes.

I worked in a competition based sales thing once concerning tours and such. I remember a family from China who had tickets for the competition wanting some info but their ticket already expired. They were treated horrible by the company whose expired tickets they had so I helped them out. Turned out they wanted every attraction ticket under the sun so I sold hundreds of pounds worth of tickets and tours. They also waited for me the next day at my stop bringing bags of food with them (they owned a company) telling me they would come back with their entire family the following year lol. Such sweet people.

I‘ve come back to this video because THIS happened to me last week at Burberry in Austria. I am a size Uk size 10. At Burberry I wanted to try a wool coat and the sales woman was like „let me look for your size“ .. she handed me a size 16. I was like „NO I need a size 10“.. (I own several Burberry coats and they are all size 10) She looked me up and down and said „ no size 16 fits .. trust me. I didn‘t try on the coat .. she got a „I am not interested in the coat anymore“ and literally stormed out of the shop. It is so sad. Many women - me included - struggle with their body image and situation like this amplify our insecurities

unfortunately you can find often that kind of ladies in Luxus boutiques. they act like they are the designers of Dior and Balmain etc. and in fact they are service ladies. Don't care about them.

I had similar experience . I'm a size 0 and I was told by the sale associate Wow I never knew black girls could be small. I laughed especially since she said I hope your not offended. I said know Im embarrassed for you and I just saved your life. She said how so? I said because I don't address people like you, but if my older sisters or another black girl comes in, I would suggest you never say that to another person again regardless of race ,because they may possibly jump on you regardless of their race or size. She kept apologizing. She actually thought she was complimenting me. Such an idiot!!!! I'm sorry you went through that. I love your channel and your personality. You rock!!!!!

This happened to me in, of all places, Victoria Secret. I walked into one of their retail stores and one of the sales people approached me and said "I'm sorry but we don't have your size." I've shopped in VS retail stores and online for YEARS so I do know they have my size but I was actually there to get some items for my college age daughter. I said, "I'm shopping for my daughter" and the salesgirl goes "Oh, Ok" like she was the gatekeeper and giving me permission to shop there. I have never stepped foot in their retail store or made an online purchase since then. I stopped all catalogs and cancelled my VS card. I'm certain they have not missed my patronage but whoever is the head of sales training of their staff has no clue what they're doing. One pet peeve is the sales staff chit chatting and ignoring the customer. What you've described is the worst of the worst. They are there to serve you and make you feel good about your visit. Period. As someone who was a retail manager then a buyer for a well known retailer, if I had walked into a store and found a group of my staff "congregating" the sh** would have hit the fan. I'm sorry you had that experience. Unfortunately the cluelessly cruel sales staff has no ideal how toxic their actions are to their brand's business and its reputation.

I’ve always wanted to be one of those obscure people with a lot of money that no one knows about that dresses like a hobo just to see how people treat them and then if you’re treated well by someone you pay off their debt or hospital bills anonymously or something. This feels very typical for expensive stores. If you don't look like a millionaire they will try to make you leave instead of actually helping you. As soon as you walk in to those stores and you're not dressed from top to toe with expensive clothes, they WILL judge you - unfortunately. Maybe because they feel like you will not buy anything or are afraid that you might scare away the rich customers hahaha My dad and I were in Milan and we were looking for stuff to buy in those expensive shops, we're Bulgarian so we talked in Bulgarian to each other. In every single store, the staff followed us around and spoke Russian to us. We were so offended by that, especially my dad because he kind of hates Russia (because of communism you know) - and the staff were not Russian themselves (some were from Slovakia, some from Ukraine) so they COULD tell the difference between Bulgarian and Russian but nooooo they didn't care about that. They just spoke Russian to us, I don't speak Russian at all and my dad used it in school 40 years ago because he had to. I thought it was very strange that they basically had orders to speak Russian to any East European person walking in to the store. We did not like that at all. But we actually found a Bulgarian working in Bottega Venetta so that was nice, he spoke english FIRST and then he asked us if we were Bulgarian. Like a normal person would. I don't mind that people speak Russian, and I would like to learn it myself but it's really in your face when they do it in expensive stores - especially when they can hear clearly that you are not Russian. And Russia is a very sensitive subject in East Europe and the balkans. So these people should know this and not try to offend their customers.

it makes me laugh how all these sale assistants got the job when they have terrible customer service over people that do have great customer service skills...its such a joke!

I come from a place with very hot climate almost throughout the year. I went to Uk for studies and it was February when I arrived in London. I had planned on doing my winter shopping from there. I went to this pretty chic boutique on Oxford Street and the sales lady over there was as condescending as the one talked about in this video. Without measuring me or anything, she declared that I was a size 18. I felt boxy and clumsy in those clothes but despite my repeated demands to try other sizes, she said that she had worked there for ages and she knew her trade well. I didn't have any experience with winter clothing before so I assumed that maybe that's how those clothes were supposed to fit. A couple of months later, I went shopping with my friends and they helped me pick out stuff from normal high Street shops. I was between size 12 and 14! I had been wearing clothes 2-3 sizes too big for me! Those much-less- expensive, high Street clothes looked better that the expensive and tailored (they even charged me extra for some alterations and fitting to make those tent-like clothes fit me)ones from the boutique.I had to restock my wardrobe just because a snooty little sales assistant tried to vent out the frustrations of her sorry little existence by being passive aggressively condescending towards me. Maybe that gave her some twisted sort of a power high!

Rudest employees: ann taylor, talbots. I also was treated rudely at moschino in las vegas, at bellagio, of all places! Smh, go figure. Im the customer!

I went into a little boutique in my village that sells high end makeup and perfume. i was going to buy Chanel Mademoiselle for my mum just for a nice gift nothing special. so i decided to ask how much the 100ml was. the sales lady was like 'I'm sorry but its a little expensive and perhaps out of your range'. mind you i didn't even give her any indication of how much i was willing to spend. Her snide comments just annoyed me so after her telling the price i was like ' Can i have two and can u gift wrap them.' she looked at me and had the gall to say 'are you sure you can afford it.' man that was the most annoying thing ever. later when paying she was like cash or card i proceed to pull out the full amount in cash and she then was like ohh i guess its ur birthday money. i then called the manger over and explained the prejudice that i was receiving from this sales women. the manger reassured me that i was to receive a store discount and a apology from the sale assistant.

I once went to get makeup at a MAC store and then while I was looking through the stuff heard someone say "no amount of makeup will ever fix whatever's going on with her face" and I literally dropped whatever I was holding and left. So. Fucking. Rude.

That’s called passive aggressive behaviour when someone cloaks a statement in cute, joking way, but the words and their intent are really a dig or a criticism. It’s not much fun when you encounter those kinds of people.

This is why I buy things from designer luxury stores online... even though I wanted the experience of walking in store and coming home with a designer shopping bag. Last time I went to get my order from LV, I walked in. No one helped me at all. I was standing around for about 15 min. A lot of PA’s were looking at me, didn’t even bother to greet me - only security guys said hello. I wouldn’t show my face in a designer place, if I couldn’t afford it. Pa’s/sale staff’s (with non designer places) are all snobby and bitchy. I don’t know why they’re so bitchy. Hence why I buy most things online now... they always judge a book by its cover when they shouldn’t... I’ve just bought another LV item online to save myself from judgey PA’s

I always find it a horrible experience when I have to tell a customer that we can't go a size up, so I apologise that our store couldn't fit their need. When I give a customer a size that's too big for her or him I apologise for judging poorly, not bloody congratulate them ( unless they were dieting and working out to get into that certain size and they told me sure.) You should have called customer service.

I had this at a Chanel counter. I was wanting to buy my normal products, and the girl actually looked me up and down and said that I couldn't afford it. So I smiled and went to the Sisley counter next door, even though they're triple the price, and bought from them instead.

As someone that used to work in sales department I know that 1 walking customer means commission $$$$ . I never said something like that not in my worst days at work! Had lot of people coming to see me because I always made them feel special and worthy , not judging their situation or appearance. It's just down to business helping people find a great fit for an item they love, nothing more- and you're double rewarded, monetary and spiritually. At the end of day I had to thank everyone that comes to my store "bothering" me making commissions. Come on, if these people go buy online or somewhere else where they are treated better what's gonna happen with my income? This is how I see it. Only to have Sophie in my store would be blessing enough, the event of the day type of thing!

I absolutely loathe any sales lady from a higher end clothing brand. They always give me dirty looks when I walk in because I'm not one of their old, wrinkled, overly perfumed customers.

Michael Kors. I walked in looking for a leather bracelet. The sales lady looked me up and down, I told her what I wanted. She did not show them to me and told me the price. Now I was wearing some over sized sweats (MK) but you couldn't tell, a random tank, and some relatively expensive coach sneakers... but my sweats were long. I then said yes.... what colors do you have... and she was like yes but they are $50.00. Then I told her again - yes I heard you the first time and the price was not my question - show them to me. Then as I am looking at them she begins to check out what I am wearing... "oh I love your ring - coach" Oh I love your watch - Marc Jacobs. Oh I love your blah blah and now I just told her brand names... now she was willing to carry me around the store ---- so yes... these brands even though Michael Kors is not Balmain status - all of these sales people are obnoxious... I never went back...

You must have stolen her husband in another life. I don't think size was the issue at all. Jealousy sounds more like it.

I'd never shop under their brand again. Their employees represent them. Though it may not be the company themselves, their employees represent their attitude. One person, acts rude to me, I'm out. I won't listen to the A** kissing from the big bosses. I'd save myself from the humiliation and the hassle. I'd take my business elsewhere. You can't fix rude. A company with rude employees doesn't deserve another dollar.

Hey I stubbled across this video and decided to comment because I had a similar experience at the MAC shop in Thessaloniki, Greece. A month ago I went to look for eye shadows and I told the sales person that I was looking for an eye shadow and she suggested one that was in my opinion to dark for my eyes, so I showed her more or less what I was looking for, a brighter shade and then she told me that even though I might not realize it I have bulging eyes and I need a darker eye shadow to not bring they forward...My are eyes are anything but bulging so I really though that she was quite stupid to say that and left without buying anyhting!

Maybe she was trying to sell the alteration service or get rid of the bigger sizes. In any case, it's pretty awkward and not in her interest to make customers unhappy

Another quick incident I had at Mac, rude saleslady who ignored me. Of course I told her she's rude and she came to assist and I kept picking so many items (probably half the store). Suddenly she was super nice till we got at the till, then I told her I change my mind and left the store with the hugest smirk. Well I didn't feel guilty cause it was a lesson for her, she got served lol

I know that this is two years ago, but this is one of the reasons these clothing stores are closing in droves. They act like they don't want our money.

A saleswoman in France snatched a dolce and gabbana dress out of my hands and told me in French I was too fat, thinking I didn't understand her. I'm a US size 2 (uk size 4?) and I tried on the dress after she left and it fit AMAZINGLY well. Took photos of it and left cause I was 20 and don't need a $1000 dress. 😂

I never get tired of this. And no longer desire luxury goods purchased at in store or stand alone boutiques. When Coach started the attitude and their quality went down 12 years ago.... retail poor behavior is contagious.

i go into Louis Vuitton all the time and unless i’m wearing a flashy outfit i’m ignored. and when i wear a super extra outfit, they help and watch and talk a lot. it’s so rude.

Not a size story but I know for a fact in stores like this, they kind of size you up to tell if you can even afford their brand. I've been barely glanced at and mostly ignored in shops when I've walked in with a department store handbag on my shoulder. Make it an LV and a Rolex on the wrist and they trip over themselves to serve me. It's pathetic. Why should anyone deserve any less respect even if they're just window shopping?

Once I went into a Chanel make-up store and I wanted to buy my sisters presents for Christmas and it was my first time ever because I'm the youngest and I wanted it to be special. And as I was the only 17 year old in the store nobody wanted to assist me, they might have thought I am there just to try out the testers. I ended up at the till with products worth over 100 quid and when I pulled out my card the lady was surprised I was actually buying them ... Like seriously? It was Christmas, tis the time to be jolly and nice and not judgemental.
