My story of overcoming a disc herniation, sciatica and chronic pain.

I was told to have surgery, and I avoided it. I had a lot of reasons not to get surgery: one of my family members had 6 failed back surgeries before I injured mine and I had also seen dozens of patients in the office who had failed back surgeries. I intuitively knew that the surgery was a gamble and that taking the long, hard road to recovery would likely address the root of the issue. This thought process held true.
If you are struggling with back pain, get into our Free 5-day Lower Back Program here: www.spreadwhealth.com/free-lo...
I was also told to never lift heavy weights again (mainly squats and deadlifts), however before my disc herniation, I had never done those movements in the first place - not more than 50lbs or so. It is through learning these movements AFTER my herniation that I felt better and more stable than ever before.
Sure, I may have had a successful surgery, but because I decided to live with the pain, it forced me to learn A LOT about my mind and body. For that, I am grateful. As a result, I am not only a master of my own body, I have taught over 22,000 people to be the masters of their own body as well.
There are some instances where surgery is necessary, however that is NOT the majority of people. Surgery is often overprescribed as physical/mechanical problems are NOT the only cause of pain.
We tackle pain with a biopsychosocial model - movement, mind, diet, environment, education, stress relief, etc. Doing it this way is highly affective.

I've had sciatica for a while(about 3 months) due to flare up. I have L4/L5 and L5/S1 herniation. I've had a discectomy and laminectomy 4 years ago. I re-herniated shortly after my surgery, most likely because I was 300 lbs. when I got it, which I shouldn't have. I wish my surgeon encouraged me to lose weight and gain strength before the surgery. I used to be athletic at 6' and weighing 170 lbs. before my initial back injury at the end of my senior year in high school. Nowadays, the pain is really starting to catch up within the last couple years. I've been having foot pain as soon as I get up from laying down for a bit but it usually goes away after walking around. Today I woke up with extreme pain that is making me sweat and practically pass out, even after taking medicine(motrin, muscle relaxers, and tremodol). I don't know what I could've done since I can't really do anything lately, not even ride in a car. l've been going on short walks and drinking a ton of water. I'm only 28 and this has completely turned my life upside down since I was 18. Every time l've tried to nove on and progress, this curse of a condition gets in the way.

I had stenosis and was about a half a milimeter from total paralysis. Docs gave me a 2 level laminectomy when I needed a 1 level discectomy.. back problems really feel like the beginning of the end.. you have good mobility, I could see how you could get your body to heal, Im 6’6 with an incredibly high set hip, never been able to squat to 90 degrees, never been able to do a hip hinge etc.. once I started doing those it was over for me

I have a plethora of issues w/ my back including 6 disc bulges, stenosis, sciatica etc and so on. even had a spondylethesis right at my l5. I was 380 lbs & I was doing just what you were doing. Watching vids & just "flopping about" buuut this set the ground work. Over time I lost 140 lbs & counting, elimated the majority of my back pain, my spondylolithesis is even now a retrolisthesis. Now while the last part isn't necessarily a good thing, it showed me that my body wasn't stuck & things can change.

Very inspiring, I recently got into strength training a few years ago to help my chronic sciatic pain that I have from an L4-L5 herniated disc. Most of my sciatica pain is gone, though I still get it sometimes. My question for you is that despite getting rid of my sciatica I still have pain in my lower back and stiffness when I contract my lower back muscles, if I don’t activate my glutes first. I can also still feel some pain with forward flexion and dynamic movements like snatches, and kettlebell swings. Would you by any chance have experienced any of these symptoms? I recently went to a PT and they said I might have arthritis in the facet joints.

Just experienced what felt like herniation today... something "slipped" with acute pain (surprisingly the pain wasn't excrutiating or anything) and involuntary I dropped the deadlift on my 4th rep of 305 pounds. My first time this ever happened, so feeling pretty devastated. My question is... when you "heal" from your injury, does the tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) ever regrow to fill up the hole that the inner nucleus ripped through? or does the hole just remain there? if so, how does the nucleus not herniate further when you exercise?
@okaynope5197
@okaynope5197 6 месяцев назад
Apparently it can scar over, just takes a long time to heal. Don't do the lift that triggered it or go very light or change form if it doesn't trigger pain or sciatica. For me I'm doing body weight spine extensions, weighted leg presses, curls, and extensions with no pain or sciatica. It's the squats and deadlifts that get me.

Ur squat looked unstable at the knees
@whealth_
@whealth_ 4 месяца назад
The hip abductors do not have as much power at the bottom of a squat. The adductors have more power at the bottom of the squat. So when squatting deeply (below parallel), your hip adductors will take over and the knees will shift as a result. For those who aren't squatting below parallel you aren't going to see this shift of the knees. There's nothing detrimental about this knee shift when it's occurring in this way.

True leg length discrepancy is rare. It's typically a functional issue rather than a structural one. Functional issues can absolutely be corrected. If it is a true structural leg length difference then there are options for lifts in a shoe to correct it.
