My story of overcoming a disc herniation, sciatica and chronic pain.

I was told to have surgery, and I avoided it. I had a lot of reasons not to get surgery: one of my family members had 6 failed back surgeries before I injured mine and I had also seen dozens of patients in the office who had failed back surgeries. I intuitively knew that the surgery was a gamble and that taking the long, hard road to recovery would likely address the root of the issue. This thought process held true.
If you are struggling with back pain, get into our Free 5-day Lower Back Program here: www.spreadwhea...
I was also told to never lift heavy weights again (mainly squats and deadlifts), however before my disc herniation, I had never done those movements in the first place - not more than 50lbs or so. It is through learning these movements AFTER my herniation that I felt better and more stable than ever before.
Sure, I may have had a successful surgery, but because I decided to live with the pain, it forced me to learn A LOT about my mind and body. For that, I am grateful. As a result, I am not only a master of my own body, I have taught over 22,000 people to be the masters of their own body as well.
There are some instances where surgery is necessary, however that is NOT the majority of people. Surgery is often overprescribed as physical/mechanical problems are NOT the only cause of pain.
We tackle pain with a biopsychosocial model - movement, mind, diet, environment, education, stress relief, etc. Doing it this way is highly affective.

@@greeshmaedwin1293 It's really hard to live with pain at such a young age. I am also 22. Being mentally disturbed is more painful than physical pain. I am also dealing with a disc bulge, kind of sciatica, but the nerve pain on my leg is less. People usually hurt their backs from either heavy lifting or a sedentary life style.But in your case, it's kind of like more medical conditions that are caused by something like inflammation, as you might know as a physio student. So focus on good nutrition you're probably having it, but you should change your regular meals to an anti-inflammatory diet. Drink a lot of water and do mobility exercises. Stay active and watch your posture while standing, sitting, and sleeping. You'll get much better results, and more importantly, surround yourself with positive people. That's the most important thing. I spent almost a year with myself, always thinking about the problem and comparing my life with others. You'll understand what I am saying, but still, I have no one. But I found myself motivated to do more than just think about it. It's hard, but slowly, it's getting better. I hope it will help you get better soon because you're not alone in dealing with such a problem.

I've had sciatica for a while(about 3 months) due to flare up. I have L4/L5 and L5/S1 herniation. I've had a discectomy and laminectomy 4 years ago. I re-herniated shortly after my surgery, most likely because I was 300 lbs. when I got it, which I shouldn't have. I wish my surgeon encouraged me to lose weight and gain strength before the surgery. I used to be athletic at 6' and weighing 170 lbs. before my initial back injury at the end of my senior year in high school. Nowadays, the pain is really starting to catch up within the last couple years. I've been having foot pain as soon as I get up from laying down for a bit but it usually goes away after walking around. Today I woke up with extreme pain that is making me sweat and practically pass out, even after taking medicine(motrin, muscle relaxers, and tremodol). I don't know what I could've done since I can't really do anything lately, not even ride in a car. l've been going on short walks and drinking a ton of water. I'm only 28 and this has completely turned my life upside down since I was 18. Every time l've tried to nove on and progress, this curse of a condition gets in the way.

Watching vids & just "flopping about" buuut this set the ground work. Over time I lost 140 lbs & counting, elimated the majority of my back pain, my spondylolithesis is even now a retrolisthesis. Very inspiring, I recently got into strength training a few years ago to help my chronic sciatic pain that I have from an L4-L5 herniated disc. Most of my sciatica pain is gone, though I still get it sometimes. My question for you is that despite getting rid of my sciatica I still have pain in my lower back and stiffness when I contract my lower back muscles, if I don’t activate my glutes first. I can also still feel some pain with forward flexion and dynamic movements like snatches, and kettlebell swings. Would you by any chance have experienced any of these symptoms? I recently went to a PT and they said I might have arthritis in the facet joints.

Because I insisted to go to the gym despite having herniated disc problem for the fourth time for the past 2 and half years, I still could not stop what I love. Since I just recovered a little, lately I started again my basic routine at the gym and added some points to strengthen my lower back. Because I suspect that my back is vulnerable to have herniated disc, since I stopped few of my routines that stresses my lower back after the first slipdisc due to anxiety and fear. Since then my lower back muscles are weakened, that is why I had been dealing this problem over and over again. So this time I am back and not ignoring my lower back muscles and added some more exercises, will help eventually by strengthening my back again with some basics.

Just experienced what felt like herniation today... something "slipped" with acute pain (surprisingly the pain wasn't excrutiating or anything) and involuntary I dropped the deadlift on my 4th rep of 305 pounds. My first time this ever happened, so feeling pretty devastated. My question is... when you "heal" from your injury, does the tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) ever regrow to fill up the hole that the inner nucleus ripped through? or does the hole just remain there? if so, how does the nucleus not herniate further when you exercise?
@okaynope5197
@okaynope5197 9 месяцев назад
Apparently it can scar over, just takes a long time to heal. Don't do the lift that triggered it or go very light or change form if it doesn't trigger pain or sciatica. For me I'm doing body weight spine extensions, weighted leg presses, curls, and extensions with no pain or sciatica. It's the squats and deadlifts that get me.

Was lifting weight but never squatted or deadlifted, aside from trying them just once. Mostly used machines. When pain started, multiple doctors and orthopedic surgeons told me not to get an MRI and basically everything’s fine dont worry about it. By the time I actually got approved for an MRI, I was completely crippled on the floor in nightmare sciatica and bed-ridden at age 30. Of course, the MRI showed a massive herniation that likely couldve been avoided if they gave me an MRI 9 months sooner. Been in physical therapy & taking drugs for 2 years now and still struggling.

Yes- we've helped many with this. As long as your doctor has said it is safe for you to exercise then I'd suggest looking into our online program.

What about c5 and c6 bilateral compression? As I do not want surgery as they have to cut into my throat.

That's impressive. I've seen the stuff cross fitters do. You're lucky they' didn't make it worse. Glad you're better.

@mattfoleysghost Do you have recommendations for coaches or guides in Austin? I have four herniated discs - two in my cervical spine that frankly have not affected my life greatly, and one in my lumbar L3:4 that is a recent injury and is affecting my quality of life. I would love to get past my pain and instability and become my former athletic self.
