Today, I am celebrating my Barcelona anniversary.
I arrived in Barcelona on 15th May after taking a night train from Madrid. There, I had left an incredible boyfriend, a well-paid job as an English teacher and a fantastic circle of friends, in order to embark on a journey into the unknown. I had always felt a special reaction to the energy of Barcelona and I wanted to make it my home.
I was going to start a job in Barcelona which could be the worst job I’ve ever done: door to door sales selling fibre optic internet connections. I say this because I wasn’t technical at all and my Spanish was pretty terrible. My wonderful colleagues would help me to write phrases notebook to help me to sell.
I stayed at a “friend’s” apartment who had been a former student in Madrid. Unfortunately, he expected the kind of payment that didn’t involve money. When he realised that I wasn’t going to pay in the way he wanted, after a couple of weeks, he asked me to leave.
Then, a couple of days later, I also lost my job because I didn’t manage to sell anything… What have I done? I wondered. After making a huge sacrifice, all of a sudden, I had no job, no flat, and I barely had 400 euros in my bank account. I only ate once a day - gazpacho and potatoes. Failing just wasn’t an option. I was prepared to struggle and fight for my place in the Catalan capital.
And I did.
In this video, I discuss my struggles in Barcelona and how I overcame them. Enjoy!
