it's called work/live balance. instead of pretending that you're busy 24/7 , people in Germany/Berlin use their worktime effeciently, to have afterwards more free and relaxing time.
We had this king in Prussia back in the days. He is still beloved by many Germans (although he wasn't king of Germany). He introduced the "Preussischen Tugenden" ("prussian virtues"). Amongst many of these was the saying "Erst kommt die Arbeit, dann das Vergnügen" ("First comes the work, then comes the pleasure"). Germany was very much influenced by these "Peussischen Tugenden". The king that molded these virtues was Friedrich 2. of Prussia or as we Germans call him lovingly "Der alte Fritz" ("Old Fred"). Ever since he ruled, a statue stands in his name in Berlin,the "Reiterstandbild Friedrichs des Großen". It has stood there ever since. In 1848, there was a huge revolution in Berlin that failed. The citizens of Berlin began sticking letters on the statue that read the short poem: "Alter Fritz steig du hernieder, und regier die Preußen wieder! Lass in diesen schlechten Zeiten lieber Friedrich Wilhelm reiten!" "Oh, dear old Fred let go the reign and rule us prussians once again! as the goods times now have died we would see dear Friedrich ride!" Ever since, whenever the political situation has gotten unbearable in Germany, there is a tradition of going to the statue and reviving this old poem.

This was such an insightful video and it means even more coming from another Black woman! I would love to study abroad in the future and your video has convinced me that Berlin is the place to go. I think you brought up an extremely valid point towards the end of your video--with comparing how the US and Germany have dealt with their past monstrosities. I think America would be a much better place to live in if our society acknowledged the ever-lasting effect slavery has left on our country. There are so many areas of improvement our country could make when it comes to race. We were too fast with sweeping our past under the rug: too much of our history is just like yeah that happened and we went to war over it but we are all fine now. Like yes slavery is gone and yes segregation is illegal but there are still so many weak points in how we’ve combatted those issues😭😭 america could certainly learn a thing or two from Germany. I would be interested in seeing your view on this topic in a future video of yours (sorry for the long ramble I just don’t see enough people talking about this subject)
@@justjiana5814 I loved this part of the video where she talked about her possible thesis, especially because I'm a lightskin black brazilian, who also majored in Social Sciences and this subject really resonates with me. Here in Brazil we struggle because we also didn't build a collective memory of the crimes of the colonization process, the genocide of our indigenous peoples and the slavery of black africans. It was only in the past few decades that we started to win the battle on the public opinion to recognize that racism against blacks and native Brazilians is still a problem. We also have a history of military coups and dictorships, which left thousands of people dead, tortured and missing. And we never had a process similar to what Germany did with nazism, as well as Chile and Argentina regarding their respectives dictatorships. Perhaps if we had done that, Bolsonaro wouldn't have come to power.
Happy you liked Berlin, I'm sure the city is always welcoming you back :) However I'm sure that some parts of your perception are maybe due to the short period you stayed there. For example the working pace can also be quite high depending on your working situation - there are (as in every capital city) big corporations in Berlin who let their employers work over hours. Also the clean subway.. - ever been to U8? It's a nightmare and people are scared taking it in the night... I think one big down part is also that the city is capitalizing and gentrifying so fast. It is really becoming more and more like London, ripping down the cultural venues, squatted houses and urban spaces for glass facades and office complexes. Enjoy Berlin as long you can! My mum always cries after visiting Berlin and noticing how her beloved city changed since the 80s...
Glad you enjoyed ur stay in Berlin. I study in Munich, and currently doing my thesis work in Dresden. Berlin, while not the cleanest, is hands down the liveliest, most buzzing city in Germany. I love it! If u make it again to Germany, checkout Frankfurt and Hamburg. Both fantastic cities. Cheers.
I'm German and married to an Asian, so I learned in recent years that this questioning "Where you're from?" - "No, where you're really from?" seems to be a very German thing. We have a tendency to be curious about the origin of other people, and often cross the bounds of politeness when inquiring in that direction.
Yes I definitely agree that curiosity was the main motivator! It’s not just a german thing, I get it here in the United States as well unfortunately...

Honestly that's an awesome subject to study if you decide to go that route. There are not many people actually able to abstract and compare different cultures and how they managed to live with "guilt". It's especially saddening to see the US kind of remains in a state of permanent denial whining over statues that glorify genocide and slave trade. It's also saddening to see all the people that had to endure so much cruelty and hardship over the last 500 years but still managed to come up strong. Anyone who had to go though this deserves utmost respect. Native America as well though... "Washington Redskins"?? holy crap.
Native Americans, especially, the realities of many Natives Americans living on reservations is horrifying. Some have no running water and little access to modern amenities but somehow are located within the “greatest country in the world”.
Berlin is a city for everyone, it was always international and a place to life your live like you like. It would be nice if you like to come back. You can get every cuisine you like from all over the world. And Berlin is still improving in a lot of things.

Sorry, but as a German, I don't think "freie" universities are comparable to Ivy league at all. I don't specifically know about the Freie Universität Berlin (FU) and you are probably right about its good reputation since you've experienced it yourself. But "frei" as a term for universities just means the university is "free" as in "free from political influence" because historically it was not founded by the state. (As far as I know, all of Berlin's universities have very good reputations, for example I've heard a lot about the Humboldt Universität and the connected Charité, but I think everyone has their own preferences, so the FU might be better in some specific fields.)
Actually the "Free University" was founded by the western authorities after students from the existing university in the eastern sector had been imprisoned by Sovjet authorites. The "Free" stands for not being controlled by political interests of any government.

Basic groceries for the subsistence level survival is heavily subsidized in Germany. It also is only taxed with 7% VAT instead of the standard 20% VAT. Bread, flour, rice, potatos, several veggies, butter, milk, etc are all considered basic subsistence level groceries. That's what makes many, if not most groceries, very affordable. Privacy is a really big thing in Germany. Because we had two governments that were absolutely controlling and invasive into our privacy. So we switched from total observation to as much privacy as possible. Which runs into taking pictures that involve other people without their consent. Club hopping is definitely a thing (outside of the pandemic, obviously). Work-life balance is pretty good in Europe as a whole. Damn, I had hoped that you'd not have had to experience any kind of low-key racism here. Not even that stupid "Where are you from? No, where are you really from?" ignorant racism. Simply judging by skin color. Damnit, I really had hoped that at least Berlin would have been above and beyond that. Sorry for my fellow stupids, eeerr, Germans for that. That requires an appology because that behavior and those comments makes me cringe / fremdschämen so badly as a 'white' German. Personally, white, black, whatever is just a useful identifier among a crowd, similar to height, hair color, clothing style, yada-yada-yada. It doesn't define the person. Personality defines a person. On the other hand we are all from the single race homo sapiens, the human with the capability of wisdom. That does not mean that everybody does APPLY their capability for wisdom (like we have seen from that stupid German). That's how I define race. Should I ever enter the USA again, I'd probably enter 'homo sapiens' on the 'race' identifier in my immigration papers, even if that makes my immigration more difficult. Hey, consider yourself lucky, you don't have to deal with Donny Dump anymore. But still, you'd be very welcome and highly appreciated should you wish to move here. We need open-minded intelligent young people here, who want to live, love, work, and integrate her. Yes, we NEED you. Germany NEEDS immigrants because without immigrants Germany's population would be shrinking.

The thing that i find interesting, is that Germany is one of the most overpopulated countries in the world, yet it doesnt want to decrease its population. Im from Czech Republic, studying in Berlin, i dunno, i find it kinda sad that so many things are forbidden doing in Germany and you have to have special laws for privacy - i mean do you know why? Its because its just too many people everywhere, you have no wilderness, no wild camping, cities and people. I love countries where everyone can have a garden, where if you dont want to, you dont have to see anyone in days, where you are not chained with 83926 rules and regulations on everything, where you dont have to behave like a robot, because there is a damn stupid rule for everything. Look at Netherlands, such a wonderful country, but its so damn overpopulated, i mean the country ideal ammount of people is lets say 3-5mil,yet they have 17mil, thats soo sad. Let the population decrease, let there be less stupid law, more wild places, more wildlife, more freedom. I think ideal population density is around 40 people a square kilometer, Germany has like 240 or something, Czech Rep around 130 and thats already deppresing. I mean sometimes i think if ideal density is not something like 5-10 ppl a square kilometer, but thats probably too bad for economy. Sometimes im thinking about emigrating to Canadian Rocky Mountains :D

This was a great video. And yes about the culture of always having to do something in America. We are literally breaking our backs for minimal rewards all while huge wealth gaps still exist for no reason. It just seems like other countries align more with my values. I want to study abroad but who knows what will happen bc of covid which is sad.

I wouldn't have asked that, but that is because I learned from Americans how they feel about it. But mind you, what if you was a person from Africa attending this festival, would have feeled hurt, after that question? We germans are a bit ignorant towards such questions, that is true. The other side of the medal is, that americans often identify as Irish or smth else, although they are 20th generation the USA. Even the term african-american comes from the USA, we don't call our colored people african-european, we call them german or french or whatever they identify. So it is a cultural difference and not always ignorance or racism.

I agree that we Germans have tried to come to terms with the role that ordinary people played in relation to the horrors of the Nazi regime and to take responsibility for this terrible period of German history (and also for the future "Nie wieder Faschismus!" - Never again fascism!). Howver, we did not so good a job in regards to the colonial history of Germany. Maybe because this period was relatively short. But this also was a time of murderous racism. For example, in 1904 there was the Herero Uprising in what was called German Southwest Africa (now Namibia). Tthe Herero population in Namibia rebelled against the German colonial rulers. They responded to the attacks with unprecedented brutality. Tens of thousands of people fell victim to the extermination campaign. Today, the majority of historians classify the war of extermination against the Herero as genocide. Still, the German government refuses to officially classify the war against the Herero as genocide. It stated in 2012 that the "brutal suppression" of the uprising could not be assessed according to the rules of international humanitarian law in force today. In Germany, too, there is still much to be done in the context of historical reappraisal.
Hi! Thank you for watching! I took a class the semester after studying abroad titled ‘Imperialism, Race, and Empires in Modern History’ that really opened my eyes to Germany colonial crimes. I really had no clue that they played such a significant role in Namibia. I would definitely like to see them officially apologize and acknowledge the violations of human rights that took place there. I was always taught about King Leopold but never the German role. I heard there was backlash semi recently about African artifacts that were filled in that era bring on display in Germany. I’d like to see those returned too.
Jamaican Americans are not "African Americans", that would only be the descendants of the American slaves also we prefer to be called Black American not "African American". Jamaican and Black American culture is two different things.
I couldn't didn't get used to US food. Sugar everywhere, even in savory dishes. Also too much salt. Not yummy. I also missed sourish tones that we Germans love. Even ethnic food with tons of sugar like Thai food tasting like a dessert. Difficult to find good beer, either totally bland or drowned in hops. I totally love Jamaican food. Fish escovitch/escabeche, all the saltfish dishes, curries, bean stews, something with tripes and beans, jerk chicken. Couldn't get enough

Honestly, I have almost never encountered an US citizen of colour in Germany. Having someone speaking English in Germany, I would even think of the UK or other places in the world in terms of their origin rather than the US. Even if the accent point towards the US.

Have you heard of the pastry "Amerikaner"? It's this black and white soft cookie like thing, which is supposedly (according to one theory) because, in the perception of post war germans (the pastry originates in the late 40s) americans were the people that were white and some of them are black. For many GIs were the first time people back then saw black people. So, the perception of americans in post-war germany has always been mostly biracial, as black and white and not as the "normal" american being white.
I haven’t heard of that! The reaction to me being American was mixed, some people scripted it immediately and others seemed like they wanted to know a little more about my “actual” heritage.
@@justjiana5814 Well, yeah. I guess in recent years a majority of black people in Germany don not anymore have an american background, but an african one. So the immediate assumptions about black people might be changing, but what's associated with americans still includes black people, I guess. Or maybe that's already getting entirely outdated. I don't know.

Hi! Because it was a program in English we didn’t need to have any german language skills but were given the option to take German classes when we arrived. If you’re studying for a bachelors or masters there are plenty of English language degrees available!
I am a sophomore in high school and i have been thinking, if I should study abroad for college because college in the states is hella expensive. And I know in Germany it little to no cost.
Do you have german language skills? I think it’s a little harder for a bachelors degree to find English programs in Germany, but there are many masters programs in English. But definitely do your research because it would be a very affordable alternative for a good education.
As a European, I've always wondered why there aren't more people from the US who do this... most countries in Europe have cheap-to-free university education, and I'm sure some also offer degrees in English, so I think you'd be doing future you a great service by not getting into massive amounts of debt - anyway good luck with your education wherever you choose to go!

Girl the struggle with the Philly subway is real lol. I was at city hall and the ceiling was leaking and it smelled. Ugh... It's not just pee there's always that unwavering stinch of weed smoke EVERYWHERE. But that might just be a Philly thing tho. New York and DC are much cleaner cities from what I know. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay though. My bf lives in the west of Germany in a smaller city and I've visited twice so far for 5 months total. Were you in Germany around when there was the 9 euro ticket cuz public transit is honestly not that cheap there usually. And I think youre experience might've been totally different if you weren't in an international program with other internationals. I hear all the time how hard it is to make friends and socialize in Germany so idk. Maybe Berlin's home to a friendlier open bunch lol.
Glad you could learn something in Europe. I have seen some strong racism there. I still like Europe though. I liked France and Germany and the UK and Belgium the best. There are more black people in Paris than Berlin, so you probably won't be asked where you are from in Africa.

Yeah, I think it is the confusion, that „Frei“ is not the only name of the university, but that „Freie Universität Berlin“ is translated to „indipendent university Berlin“, so „frei“ is only an andjective in that name 😁 But yeah, in short it would be FU 😉
It has been named "Freie Universität Berlin" (Free University Berlin) because the ancient University, the Humboldt Universität, was located in the eastern sector. So they founded it as a new university for the western part of the divided city. And - due to cold war jargon - they named it "free" as a contrast to the "unfree" Sovjet occupied counterpart. They did the same with the local broadcast station, "Sender Freies Berlin".
It´s not always ignorance - sometimes it´s just a lack of experience. Some germans just can´t imagine that someone from the US chose Germany for living... So seeing a black man or woman he or she is from Africa - thats not racism (I my opinion) and not ignorance - it´s curiosity combined with experience. I mean in my city there are a lot of black people - and out of 1000 maybe only 1 is from America. You just jump to conclusion... And while writing I find myself in a place where I try to make myself understandable. Some will say I sound harsh or unfriendly or whatever, but I´m just trying to make myself clear. I just don´t find the right words to pinpoint it. And I think thats one of the main problems: people try to say something nice, use the wrong word because they don´t know any better and the other person feels insulted...

I think this ignorance you confronted with is Part of a strange change in Berlin, especially in Kreuzberg/Friedrichshain, this is where the Karneval der Kulturen is taking place. This Change is part of some gentrification, a lot of people from allover Germany are moving to Berlin, because it is "cool". Especially people from conservative places like Bayern and Baden-Württemberg. And here they are trying to be progressive, and they try very hard... 😏 They overdo it in their new "i am so left and progressive" that they really think asking these questions is openminded...😌 I am a white guy born and raised here in Berlin Schöneberg. I grew Up in a multicultural environment and from this environment you would never hear this kind of questions. This mainly comes from ppl who where not born here. They are very closedminded ppl who think they are openminded and experienced. They try, we have to give them a Chance 😁

maybe you know it, but in 2015 there was a big refugee wave (can it be translate in this way?) and there were a lot of people from africa and I would say therefore he asked you this question. It doesn't apolologies him completely but in Berlin there are living so many different people from different countries that it isn't your first thought to think of the exchange students I guess (in these times, before 2015 he would maybe asked you another question) and maybe he just couldn't believe that an open minder like you could be from the US ;PPP

17:49 Berliner here. i like to annotate because this seems a kind of american exceptionalism mixed with us identity politics contextualization. My Dutch-Antilles and German-Cuban Friends often addressed - from Africans - as "africans" just because of their black skin color.. My German-Russian Friend are often addressed as "you are also turkish" from Turks, just because he has black hair and a beard - its almost like a running gag now. I will not explode if an American calls me French (maybe 😂) . Americans in general are just an exception in daily life - except near us military bases in germany. Berlin has a huge African, Arab, Turkish, Polish, Vietnamese and Thai community. Especially African migration increased with the migration crisis . I worked as a student with west africans students at night in a printing house and shared pictures of our grandmas gardens - i am mister green thumb. In my street the only neighbor with black skin color is from Senegal or west africa. The only black anglo-saxon i met in recent times was an english men in my tech job. So if you meet 100 Africans in Berlin on daily basis but the 101 Human with a dark skin color is an woke american starting a debate about "ignorance" with you?....just because of an misunderstanding?...yeah i guess your day will go a differently 😂. All i can think of is that you are maybe also "ignorant" (a little little bit) of daily life experience of the people here and as an ongoing sociologist it seems you too fast in fix us ideology driven explanations than driven in curiosity of the people here. Empathy is not a one way road, so give the people the benefit of a doubt and hear their side of the story. The whole world knows about african americans and like your european american counterpart ,you always think that you have to be the center of the world or story 🤣😇 and need the full attention. Yet Eurasia, Africa and the Arab peninsula are connected - you literally can walk - for millennia and we have our own migration history. So peace my american sister!

All i wanted to say was that ,in my opinion, your example was more a day to day ignorance , which is well distributed among all humans versus ideological ignorance based on a certain world view or politics. 19:38 is a good thesis idea. Look also into Rwanda. Germany and Rwanda followed an universal human approach based on the Enlightenment to work on their past. it´s also explicit manifested in their Constitutions - that would be the hardest work for the US i guess. Imagine how the US prison and police system would have to change if "Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority." would be constitutional? Germany, Rwandas approach is completely the opposite of todays demands of the critical race theory in the us. Which is in my opinion is more a religion then science. it works with sin of origin, public denouncing, dogma and strict dichotomies of human motivations. As a German i never fell "guilt" but i fell strong "responsibility". But ok, a part of America turned capitalism also into some kind of religion 😂 Max Weber " capitalism and the protestant ethic". However you will become a great sociologist, stay curious and open!

I applied through a partnership that my university had with FU Berlin! But when I applied I had a 3.7GPA. I was the President of a club that I created at college. I worked at a non profit as well. Those are the big ones lol
Nice to hear your story. Cruel things have happened to all races of nationality in the history, even black or brown in America. They are called African-Americans. The blond people are Americans. They are actually European-American. The natives in America according in history the books 95% got killed in some way or they other, the black Africans ancestry were treated like animals, very sad, that's all in the past, as you said the Nazis under Adolf Hitler's leadership were very bad, about 7 years, good that they had to stop. Very true!! I hope history won’t be repeating itself anytime soon but the way things are going in the US (and around the globe to be honest) are starting to make me nervous! I always think about Native Americans and how poorly they are still treated to this day... Thank you for your message🤎
Yeah, some people want your ethnicity by asking where are you from. But you can always say "I Was born and raised in america, i know nothing else, never went to Afrika.". That will shut the most of them up. If they wont, tell them about the slave thing, that should at last shame them enough to stop. If you feel generous, you might add " but my family stems from xyz" and tell him a little about it. Mostly its a very impolite way of being curious.
German living in Berlin here. As long as you don't need german for your university courses, you won't really need it in daily life. Even if you try to speak german, most people will automatically switch to english once they hear your american accent.

About that question where are you from Africa the thing is that many black people from America have a bit of white ancestry that's why pretty often they look slightly different than black people from Africa. It's not racism. It's the way how people are seeing other people. I hate racism but looking at you my first thought would be also that you are from Africa. You really don't have to be offended by that because the origin of this thought is not offensive. 🙂
@@esci85 well, if you watch the video, you will notice it’s about experiencing another city. I recommend Nürnberg, for studying, vacation, a day trip or more. You pick. It offers a lot of history, a beautiful old town and great shopping possibilities. I love Berlin, but it’s a totally different story and most people abroad know Berlin or Munich and Nürnberg is just different (and older).
The public institutions are free for international students except for a small fee of a few hundred dollars. But in order to get a visa you do have to prove you can afford living costs!
Great video. That ignorant guy from the culture festival was really ignorant. I think our perception of the US (white male German here) is very dominated by US culture, movies and TV shows, but the African American experience is so much part of it, that I was actually more worried that it would be even the other way around: that people actually from Africa were misidentified as African American (I saw this happening a couple of times)... But yes, I guess African Germans is so much a minority that this can be an issue for black people visiting Germany... And on a lighter note, I agree German cusine is not so great. You were lucky that you were in Berlin, because it's easier to get international food, but in more rural areas it can be really bad. Don't even try to get decent Mexican here... ;)
Yes someone else commented that often African migrants are misidentified as African Americans! This was a new concept to me. I was so very pleased with the wide variety of international!! I was supposed to visit Dresden but never made it, I was concerned after googling and finding a bunch of articles about an active Neo-Nazi scene. It’s much safer than the US! Nothing ever happened to me or anyone I studied with while there and we weren’t being exactly safe. I traveled by myself all throughout the night and early morning and nothing ever happened to me. Another reason it was such a new experience!
At my university there are three tracks for that degree, you can choose on of these areas to focus on: cultures, economics, or security. So depending on that focus you take classes about political theory, globalization, and international economy.
