There is absolutely nothing I would change on your videos. Each one of them is well thought out and has the right amount of information. It is the only channel I found so far where the youtuber is not “throwing” videos at us just to meet the weekly goal, but carefully produce single videos that actually help us. Thank you for sharing your passion for fashion with such dedication and respect to your viewers. Saludos desde Argentina 😊

I agree too. I used to pretend that I didn't need to think about these things, that it was silly or superficial, but it was really a cover, because I didn't know what looked good on me, how to tell. Everyone else seemed to pick up these things without blinking, but I never could. I did the konmari method a little while ago, to try and get my house in order. Everything that I picked up that I loved and kept, somehow seems to follow the 'rules' that Justine mentions. Every time she talks about something, I realise WHY I kept something. My clothes are cool toned like me. I like empire waisted maxi dresses, jacquard knit A-line dresses, and long, flowy, assymetric cardigans that I wear open, because I have PCOS and my weight gathers around my tummy area. I mostly like things that are fitted to show my waist, because I'm an hourglass, but I also love a boxy jumper to chill out in. All the purses I kept were the ones that were made well. The red lipstick I love is blue based. I love the fabrics I chose because they are soft, and I have fibromyalgia. Every time I see a video, I get more confident in the choices that i have already made, and in the shopping that I do. It's so easy now to look at something and think 'no, that's too warm', or 'this purse is not well-made', or 'that style wouldn't suit my shape'. It takes a lot of pondering away.

Coley Greystone there's really nothing to get ! it's putting on clothes that make you look and feel good. It's cooler when you can do it for cheap ! I mean cause who can't look good in a $1,000 outfit ? But I guess my half German half Italian heritage helps ! And my stylish mom, but who was Catholic so she kept it reighned in. That might not make much sense but in the 70s.......

I've seen a lot of people complaining about the inclusion of the Empire silhouette. It may not work for all body shapes trying to camouflage a tummy, but it's one of my favorite for me. As a plus hourglass, it highlights my waist while downplaying my lower tummy. On the contrary, anything tending towards boxy or trapeze just makes me look wider. Not every trick will work for every body type.
@amycortez3289

Azura Annette Thanks for this comment. I’ve been going bananas trying to figure out how to flatter that same figure. I refer to myself as hourglass from the front, apple from the side.
@PotterSpurn1
@PotterSpurn1 4 года назад
@@amycortez3289 You can;t be two body shaped. If you look hourglass from the front you are hourglass. If you stick out a bit around the middle from the side view you are just a bit overweight in that area. A lot of hourglasses have rounded tummies. An apple has no waist at all from the front (or nothing that could be defined as a waistline).
@sarahluvburkhardt5755
@sarahluvburkhardt5755 2 года назад
Agreed! Same body shape and empire dresses look so good on me and I feel good in them. I normally only wear them in the summer but I’ve been looking for some on sale that I can wear this fall/winter with a blazer and boots. The ones I own now look great with my blazers in terms of fit but they don’t match….they are too “summery” looking. Boxy clothing makes me look like a extra wide box. It’s been a little frustrating because it seems like a lot of shirts and sweaters being sold now are boxy and cropped.

I'm more an apple and gain weight first in my tummy, I love the empire styles for tops and dresses. I really can't wear any dress off the rack if it has a belt or built in waistline, because am tall (about 5'10") and the waistbands hit me across lower ribcage or even across the bust. I'm also long waisted. I can't even zip up those dresses, and knee length items are 4-5 inches above my knees. I have to do long tops with skirts, or empire or a-line things.

@desiree2086

There is a bit oversized and extremely oversized. I'm not super short, neither long, but I have short legs so if I cross the line from a bit oversized to "too oversized" I look ridiculous too. Maybe you can also find something that is a little bit oversized. Not too much. In a chiffon fabric per example and with nice heels.

You are now my official hero. I am 4'11" tall and 55. I am the woman who carries weight in the middle of my body but has killer legs. Unfortunately, six years ago I had to go on daily steroids for a life threatening autoimmune disease. And, BOOM, my body changed overnight. I grew a "spare tire" around my middle and my breasts grew to a DD. One of my main problems health wise is chronic pelvic pain. So, I can no longer wear pants that zip and snap. I was always a US size 8 and now I am a 12. So, I finally purged all my closet of all smaller sizes and have been buying clothes that match your video. The most important things for me are, 1. The dresses must be slightly above the knee. Midi dresses make me look like I have 5 inch legs. 2. Clothes must fit perfectly, NO tight clothes. This only makes me look bigger.3. Sleeve length is very important. When talking about a 3/4 length sleeve, there is a three inch difference between stylish and matronly. Long sleeves that need hemming always make you look frumpy.4. Always have a slight heal on my shoes. Very flat shoes make my look dumpy as well. I wear a lot of boots, wedges and kitten heals.. 5. MOST IMPORTANT... take care of your clothes. I hang dry everything, so they don't shrink. And I do not leave the house unless what I am wearing has been steamed or ironed. 6. Learn to do some simple alterations. I have been sewing for years, so I alter all my own clothes... unless it is too complicated. I am a good customer to my alterations person, and she treats me well. Everything I buy must be hemmed, including sleeves. Buttons must be moved, Spaghetti straps shortened. Consider alteration costs when purchasing the item. Like my leather coat, cost almost as much as I paid for it to have to altered. But, I have had it for 6 years now! I also try to bring in some "trendy" items each season, but I will never stop wearing clothes that are designed for my body type. Thank you so much, Justine, for addressing these issues. Women are looking for ways to dress better, and you are the answer!!!
@patriciasalem3606
@patriciasalem3606 6 лет назад
I totally agree. I'm just a smidge taller than you and the same age, also with autoimmune and pain issues. I have to be comfortable in my clothes (and I work at home most of the time, so I don't have to dress formally, just look nice if I pop out to the market for something). I'm moving in a couple of weeks, so it's a good time to purge my wardrobe of things I don't wear (usually because I feel ugly in them) and make a list of new things to watch for. I find it hard to buy inexpensive lines when you're short and not skinny. I keep my eyes peeled for more well made brands in thrift stores and got a sewing machine too, so I can adjust things in my closet to make them look more tailored in the right places. Nothing can be tight, except leggings with a dress or long top over them. No tucking in (so limiting, but it's a must). No clingy fabrics. No pants or shrinkable fabrics in the dryer. Flats are okay but have to be worn with the right pant line. Skirts/dresses must end around the knee or at the foot. Accessories go a long way in drawing the eye and concealing jiggly bits. Three quarter length sleeves have to be just the perfect length or my arms look like turkey drumsticks, although they are usually okay if I layer a slim long-sleeve t-shirt or blouse underneath to hide the line of bare skin. Tall, skinny gals: consider yourselves lucky!

I'm sceptical about the idea of hiding a big gut under draped fabric. IME, the fabric simply catches over the protrusion and emphasises it. The very first style, with stiffer material which won't "grab" the gut, is by far the most workable. And I speak as one with some 50 years' experience of having a fat gut.
@flyingsnow00
@flyingsnow00 4 года назад
imo, the issue is more complex , it depends also what the material is like, and how the cut is made to drape in a certain way (sometimes the brands are more interested into profits than doing a proper cut/ have a good material, and selling stuff for the "feminine" look, not because they can mask certain parts) ...also it's a pity many (if not most) brands are not interested in women over 30s (unless one keeps slim / skinny to fit the huge amount that is produced for younger women) ... also stiff material might come with strong shoulders and large sleeves , which will only add to a box-like look ... but indeed, getting the stiff items saves a lot of energy and frustration of wasting time & money (like buying the wrong stuff when too exhausted after a shopping session) ; also having them slightly fitted works to tame down the shapeless feeling. :-) Just a (long) thought.

Oh, agreed so much, if something is flowy, it just shows it even more for me. Especially when I am sitting down. Then I have to adjust it every while or so... It's not worth the effort. Also I have a large bust so anything without marked waist looks like a tent on me. Even when I didn't have a gut people would think I'm pregnant wearing anything empire waist and flowy 😁 I mean, I don't mind, it's just that here we are actually talking about not looking like that :D I found that a shirt or T shirt tucked in and a wide skirt at waist level work best for me in situations like these

The funny thing about shapewear is that it just pushes fat from one area to another in my experience. Plus, it's highly uncomfortable. If you feel you 'need' it with modern clothes (as opposed to certain vintage that is designed to be worn with girdles, waspies, corsetry etc), perhaps it's a better idea to just lose a bit of weight healthily than cam yourself into sweaty, oppressive compression garments?

Joanna Crosby Oh, my goodness! There are others with my problem? My arms are huge, and it’s not from bodybuilding. Yes, I need to lose weight, but even when I do, my arms and legs are big. If a blouse fits my arms, it’s too big in the torso. if I got a blouse to fit my torso, I couldn’t get it on my arms. 😞😞😞

I needed this so much! I have an hourglass body, but there's a little layer of "pudge" covering my abs and its REALLY annoying because you can't see the muscles underneath that stubborn pudge. I get really self conscious about it, and I couldn't seem to find a video for this that didn't just talk endlessly about shape wear. Now I found this lovely video! You has just affirmed to me that I am on the right path and have good taste in clothing. I have most of these silhouettes of design and YES, they do hide a tummy. I had no tummy until middle age, still cant believe the changes but with these picks it easy to hide this figure problem and oh so much better than shape wear. Thank you for being the voice of good taste and common sense, and you are just adorable too! You look like an angel with your beautiful bone structure and dark hair !

As a short and fat* woman the long and/or oversize tips don't actually work in my experience! The problem is basically 1. If you wear something oversize or long it just looks comical and like you're 5 and trying to wear your mom's clothes. 2. After a certain point there's no hiding that you're fat and dressing like you're trying to hide your body just draws attention it or worse it makes you feel like you are. Then there's the totally separate problem of not being able to find something "oversized" because you're already shopping at the very top of the store's line and there's no way in hell that you'll find something oversized. All of the other tips though will totally work if you're short and fat, A-line, flowy, and asymmetrical clothing is a blessing. *this is using "fat" as an honest description and is not meant to be derisive or offensive.
@stitchedwithcolor
@stitchedwithcolor 5 лет назад
Yeah, i too have found that oversize dresses and loose tops are not as forgiving as they might seem. On a smaller breasted woman, i fear the dress/top may not lift away from the body enough to conceal much. On a much larger breasted woman, like me...well, i think it makes me took like all of that width is belly, not boob. And i can absolutely see how looser garments would make a smaller woman look like her clothes don't fit if they're not styled to fit close at least *somewhere* to play off the loose. I usually avoid wearing something loose on both top and bottom. Up 'til now, i just assumed that manufacturers intended looser dresses for slender women who can look good in almost anything and for larger women who (they assume?) have given up entirely. Maybe it's just the garments i've personally tried?

You hit all my favorite tricks for this situation! I’d like to add that some brand make maternity topped versions of skinny jeans that are very comfortable to wear underneath a longer shirt, top or oversized sweater. Oh and cocoon-shaped garments can be very nice too, the same way as A-line ones! Btw your look is fab in this video, always loved bordeaux with gold on brunettes, especially for colder weather. Some designers loved his work and introduced me to it. Since then I am following his work as much as I can as I am in completely different industry living in the city that loves casual more than anything else. If you're heavier in the midsection you might have larger breast as well and that makes empire waists tough as the line might not fall under the breast area, which makes for a poor fit.

@purplesky001
@purplesky001 6 лет назад
mnicolaidou depends on the fit. I'm an hourglass figure, so I find that flowy maxi dresses, with a not too tight band work better with an empire waist for me than something very structured and pleated that cuts off at the knee, 60s style. The latter makes me look pregnant for sure!
@lockergr

Emma Jardine well I wouldn't consider someone with an hourglass figure being in need of tummy hiding. I think of oval figures as being the type that need tummy hiding.

I slightly disagree with some of these. Unless the material of the A-linee dress is very stiff, the first wind will make it "stick" on your tummy and make you look pregnant. Same goes to everything that is more fitted at the breats and oversized otherwise. I had this problem forever, and I bought recently an A-line skirt that has a sort of reversed peplum waistline, if that is a thing. I make a bow with the belt of the skirt and the above part is ruffled. It is a bit hard to describe. It is a game changer. The ruffle hides just the tummy. I also like to show a bit clevage, arms, or legs to draw away the attention from my midsection.
@nikabela
@nikabela 6 лет назад
something like this but only the upper part of the ruffle www.google.no/search?dcr=0&biw=360&bih=248&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=zOrsWd3XNcnm6ASnnJ3wBQ&sjs=3&q=reversed+peplum+waistline+skirt&oq=reversed+peplum+waistline+skirt&gs_l=mobile-gws-img.3...21005.32663..32930.......824.7041.30j23j2j0j1j0j1............mobile-gws-wiz-img.....3..0j35i39j0i67j0i10i30j0i30j0i19j0i10i19j0i8i30i19j30i10.4Sw7icCS5Cc%3D#imgrc=JMznB0V1TefKWM:

Hi Justine, sometimes when concealing the torso tends to make the eyes focus on the bust area instead. What if you’re also a bit heavy on the bust. What’s a good cut to keep you look slimmer. Like an A line won’t necessarily work because that makes you even top heavier. Thoughts?

@Tankervoy

I find that fitted around the bust - especially on the sides/ under the arms - is important to minimize the bust. Anything boxy will just create a “tent”-effect and make this section appear even bigger. Fitted top/ dress, raglan style is nice, and then use an oversized scarf to cover up and draw away the attention from the bust. If you wear a (fitted) blazer and a scarf that is just worn around the neck with the panels hanging loose down the front, it will cover up the bust and tummy nicely. The vertical panels of the scarf create an elongating effect.
@hw7348
@hw7348 6 лет назад
With a large bust, you will look best in tops with a v or open neck up top. It elongates the neck, and can make the bust appear smaller. I have to disagree that a scarf will help conceal the bust. In fact a scarf will bring more attention to that area, and add more weight to that area so you may look even more top heavy. You can wear fitted shirts with a belly if they have some extra fabric, like ruching, or if you wear a higher waist skirt, pants, etc. But I personally always try to wear tops with open necks to help elongate my body; I don't like my whole upper chest and neck to be covered as it does makes me appear much larger than I am. In fall/winter, I never wear scarves, cardigans, etc. I prefer wearing jackets with a defined waist like an anorak jacket or a dress coat (I have one fitted up top and it has a skirt, literally like a dress). I also love peplum tops, and "fit and flare" or a-line dresses during summer or winter with thick tights. But that's just my style. I don't like having a lot of excess fabric on my body. :)
