Too much rain, overwatering and the wrong soil mix are the causes of succulent rot. Having the right soil mix can eliminate these problems but a lot of substrates used in succulents mix can be very expensive. Cat litter is a cost effective substrate to incorporate in a succulents soil mix.

In the USA, I use oil dri. It's 100% montmorelinite, just like akadama, turface ect. BUT, it's only $4 for 40# 🤣. I LOVE IT

Liz had me on an endless search for decomposed granite. had no idea it was commonly sold as chicken/poultry grit at most agricultural supply stores. i thought poultry grit was like crushed chicken bones or something lol! had no idea birds ate granite to help with digestion.. and how much my succulents and cacti would love it! especially the rosette varieties of succulents! a lot of my crassula and sedum like more moisture, i use coconut fiber… much more forgiving than regular soil

The best soil mix I ever had was when I first started with Succulents and I was busting up boulders of granite and decompose granite in my garage lol remember that Liz? It was a lot of work but it taught me so much about the minerals that Succulents love! I still have buckets of Mica🤪 my succulents were colorful and tight and they grew beautifully! I have since switched to poultry grit it’s more expensive but it’s less work and the floor in my garage appreciate it as well! And the bagged soil that I get has lava rock in it. I’ve been doing a lot of soil experiments and I’m happy with what I’ve come up with. I never forget the lessons that you’ve taught me❤️

I think it was the love that you put into the boulder busting that made them grow strong and beautiful.😁

Haven't tried that one but it says ZEOLITE. If they are the same as the one I used in this video, then it's an excellent add on to the soil mix. Thanks for watching.

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK yes it does, I’ve used it for a year now and I find it works best if you rinse it thoroughly first, otherwise it can make the soil very hard like clay!

Thx for video, I did not know that you can use cat litter for soil. Would it be the same if you use half cat litter and half granite in that soil mix?
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 2 года назад
That would be a different mix. The point of this video is to give an alternative to those who can't get DG. Thanks for watching.

I add lava rocks and crush lava rocks in my succulent n cacti plants to increase its roots and I did an experiment. Adding lava rocks on the bottom for drainage, use cactus soil mix with perlite, add lava rocks in between each time you add soil. My peruvian apple spiralis grew 3 inches within a month during June 28 - July 28. I hope this helps you, take care!

Thank you for the video. I was in to bonsai initially and there are some who use just plain cat litter for bonsai soil. I tried a lot to get the non clumping cat litter particularly diatomaceous earth. But unfortunately in India we dnt have it easily avlb. I am using pumice4-8 mm, i have also used cinder and crushed leca. I am yet to see how they differ. I have recently ordered coarse sand( river sand) and granite chips. I will have to wait to see what works and what ds not. We also dnt get most of the different variety of rocks. We instead have various marble chips but i haven’t used them yet.

Hi Liz I am a beginner succulent addict, just semps and sedum to start with. Being in the UK I can't get this clay, but I did find a cat litter made from quartz sand and lime (small white stones), would this work (worried about the lime). Love your channel, get all my advice from you. Phyl.😊
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Год назад
Lime will clump up and not good for succulents that required free draining soil. I also don't like using sand on my succulents. Coco peat, perlite/pumice and potting soil will be a better option.

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Thank you Liz. I think I will try perlite as it seems to be a popular choice, thanks again Phyl,
