No, _petrol_ is more volatile. It's literally one of the main differences between them. It's a lighter, shorter chain hydrocarbon (majority Octane - an 8-unit polymer, vs diesel which is majority Decane, ie 10 of the same basic units per molecule) that quite readily evaporates and forms an explosive air-fuel mixture in regular atmosphere, or by the simple action of an air current passing over a bowl of fuel (or a needle-thin straw dipped into one) in a carburettor, and then can be ignited by a rather small spark (including those which allegedly used to happen at the battery contacts of mobile phones...), or an exposed flame, or a suitably hot glowplug. Diesel on the other hand needs more encouragement to atomise and form an air-fuel mix, be that it being dripped onto the inside of a hot bulb preignition chamber on an old tractor, fed through a misting-type injector on a more modern car, or whatever, and is comparatively difficult to ignite. The preferred method being compression of the fuel-air mixture to at least 14x atmospheric pressure (or more if the air is cold; typical intercooled turbodiesels are more like 20x to ensure they can still function in the coldest of winters), which heats it up beyond the fuel's flashpoint (which is rather higher than petrol, which will auto-ignite from compression alone at around 11x atmospheric pressure for typical-octane fuel in a naturally aspirated system... which tends to cause unwanted knocking etc as the engine is designed for spark ignition rather than the rigours of compression ignition), causing spontaneous ignition much like paper put into an oven set somewhere north of 450 farenheit. The glowplugs in a diesel engine don't actually instigate ignition themselves, they merely warm up the inside of the combustion chamber so that compression-ignition happens more readily than it otherwise would with a stone-cold engine. It's a bit like adding a catalyst to a chemical reaction, it just needs that extra little nudge to get the reaction cycle started, after which it's self sustaining because the burning fuel creates more heat output than was input. You can ignite pools of both liquids with a match or cigarette, the difference is that - unless they've been very freshly poured so there's been no time for a vapour cloud to form - the diesel will tend to just burn, like an oil fire or a flaming cocktail, whilst the petrol will appear to explode, due to the rapid combustion of the vapour above the liquid. After which it will burn in much the same way as the diesel, just a little more quickly. The way the fuels combust within an engine is somewhat similar, even, despite the diesel being atomised; it "deflagrates", essentially still burning in the normal manner, just quite quickly, and shoving the piston with the pure high-pressure force of the expanding gases, whilst the petrol actually, technically "explodes" - burning, and causing the resulting gases to expand, fast enough to exceed the local speed of sound and creating a shock wavefront that hammers down on the top of the piston rather more violently. This is reflected in their typical torque and power curves. Petrol gives a lot of power, but its torque is generally fairly weak as it's like a rapid hammer blow and the propulsive force can be completely spent quite early in the power stroke; diesel is ultimately less powerful, but delivers more torque at low engine speeds, because it pushes in a firm but sustained fashion throughout the entire stroke. It's also why petrol engines are more prone to knocking, even though the very thing that makes diesel work in the first place is the same mechanism that causes knock - if a petrol engine suffers preignition then a good deal of the total explosive force might be spent around, and particularly before, top dead centre (ie, within the compression, rather than power stroke), which saps power and can cause all kinds of horrible damage to the head, valves, piston crown, conrods etc. A diesel actually errs slightly on the side of preignition because then it's guaranteed proof against misfire through a fairly wide range of running conditions (if it might optimally start burning from, say, as early as 10 degrees TDC, then there's a good 20 degree range where it may still catch even if it doesn't quite manage straight away for some reason... if it *only* catches more or less exactly at TDC, when the combustion chamber volume is smallest and the fuel-air mix is at its most compressed, then any small disturbance could see it misfire entirely), and the power pulse is so spread out, taking a little time to spread throughout the chamber and build up, that it doesn't actually have much effect through what's left of the compression stroke and only really starts pushing properly some degrees into the power stroke. (And, of course, it's why petrol smells so much stronger than diesel)
