Good job Ingrid! I love seeing, hearing, experiencing women with (dark) body hair. I'm half white/ half middle eastern, so also pale skin and strong, dark hair. I sometimes let it grow but I'm not comfortable having it show around everyone, it depends on the people (and on the temperature, cause I can't wear tights in 100 degrees) I hang out with. Being more comfortable with showing my body hair has actually been inspired by a woman in the NYC subway! It was SO thick and curly (yet dark blonde) and she looked so normal and I LOVED it! It wasn't a rebellious act. It was just. Her. I am positive that seeing real people with body hair, hearing people (like you) talk so freely about this, helps so much! Whether you like to grow it, shave it, wax it, or trimm it, it's all cool and ok, als long as YOU are comfortable with it. Personally I switch between them all 😁 No one can tell me otherwise. And by now people that think their opinion on MY bodyhair matters are not attractive to me anymore. No person shall tell me what to do with my body and what about me is and isn't beautiful!

OhMyGodGiveMeAName I love hearing about your experience! Thank you so much for sharing! I totally know what you mean about feeling comfortable around some people but not everyone. I'm at ease with my friends and girlfriend, but I get nervous and more self-conscious when I'm meeting new people or going to an event. When I went to the CFDAs earlier this summer, I was so nervous to have my fitting at Chanel because 1) AH! CHANEL! and 2) my hairiness would be out for everyone to see in a fancy place around a bunch of people I had never met before. Turns out, everyone was so incredibly lovely! They all helped me to feel comfortable and I was able to soak in the experience instead of worrying about my body hair. It may have been a fashion event, but it really felt like a lesson in personal style for me. When I looked in the mirror I saw myself, no one else. Whenever I feel nervous, I remember that night and think, "You wore a Chanel dress with the best kind of accessories - your hairy legs! You've got this!"

@@ingridnilsen aw, that is such a powerful experience! And that's the thing, (early) positive experiences shape how we feel about ourself so much! And especially if we make changes / go with something less accepted in society. I'm really happy that it went that way for you and I personally am getting more comfortable showing my hairy side on outings :) Hope it will get more mainstream, like birkenstocks did 😉 Comfort > traditional fashion ideas

I remember back in the missglamorazzi days you disliked having dark armpits (discoloration) you hardly showed them and Hardly wore sleeveless shirts. You even tried out deodorants that would help with the discoloration and now look at you..rocking the pits in their natural form...hairy and all...love it!!! You do you girl!!!

I’ve seen someone publicly shamed for having arm pit hair. I’ll never forget it. I was working as a bridal consultant and the bride was having her brides maids try on a dress. Her one friend had long pit hair. The brides says, you’re not wearing that long hair at my wedding. In front of the whole group! She replied, well I guess I won’t be in your wedding. Yea, well that went over well. Everyone stared at her. I felt bad for her but happy she stood up for herself.

I went outside yesterday in my city- not at my parents' house in the woods, where I feel totally fine with body hair- for the first time with a short dress and hairy legs. It was surprisingly fine. The only thing I changed about how I interacted with the world was I just decided to not look at other people looking at me. Anyway, whenever I stumble across conversations about body hair, I see the usual comment "it's pretty simple, I shave because I want to, I don't shave if I don't feel like it." My issue with shaving is precisely that- I want to. But why? I want to because I feel uncomfortable not conforming to a beauty ideal, worried that I'll be labeled as "gross" or a "feminazi" or whatever else, and uncomfortable because body hair on women is such a Big Deal. So I'm currently resisting shaving really hard and forcing myself to sit with this. To learn to not care about my natural state. For example, one of the big things on my mind with body hair is I have to go get a leg x-ray next month. Will I cave and shave for those few minutes that the technician is adjusting my bare leg for different x-ray angles, or the few minutes my orthopedic surgeon is checking out my healing? I honestly don't know as of yet, but I think it's really important (at least for me) to examine where my motivations for shaving come from. Because I don't think they would have naturally developed if I wasn't surrounded by the concept that hairy women aren't acceptable.

When I wear a tank top to work with kiddos (I work in schools and at summer camp) they frequently whisper, point, laugh, or straight up say "ew" to my face when they see my armpit hair or leg hair. Children as young as 7 have done this to me. I don't mind, I tell them that they will too have hair there one day. But how terrible is it that probably younger than 7 years old, children have decided our body hair is gross. Something to shame. Thanks for sharing, Ingrid. This is an important conversation that is going to continue for years to come.

ingrid i can’t begin to explain how much this video meant for me. as a latina, i’ve always had thick, corse hair grow all over my body. seeing white, cis women in the media i was always confused as to why i had hair growing on my arms, toes, nipples, stomach, etc and they weren’t. it was never addressed because women’s body hair is such a taboo. not something to be discussed, just waxed, shaved, or threaded without a second thought. i’ve often been told by family to shave because they could see my “gross” body hair. thank you for speaking about your experience as a mixed race woman who’s body hair deviates from a white woman’s. i’ve only ever seen white women grow their body hair and from what i’ve seen it’s always limited to a tiny bit of armpit hair and barely visible leg hair. not sure if i’m ready to grow out any of my body hair yet, but videos like this truly increase my courage enough to possibly grow my armpit hair out. thank you.

I've had such a difficult relationship with body hair that was implemented as a child by my parents. As a Mexican woman, I was born with thick, coarse, black body and facial hair. It is what it is, but I was taught that having body hair was a dirty. Since I wasn't allowed to shave as a child, my mother would bleach my arm and leg hair until I was "old enough" to use Nair to remove my hair. As a teen my parents took me to get laser hair removal on my face which was the most painful thing because I had braces at the time. At the same time I was attending high school in the United States where I started experiencing bullying because of my body hair. It's been a while roller coaster but thankfully now as an adult I've been able to take control of the situation. I've stopped caring about what my parents and Mexican beauty standards and only shave when I personally feel like it. Sometimes I won't shave for a week, other times I won't shave for a month or two. I love being the one in control of what I want to do with my body hair and I personally don't think it's dirty or ugly.

i remember being in a shoe store as a child, i'm not sure how old i was, maybe 10. there was this woman, who had beautiful long curly hair, she was wearing a red mini dress and she was trying on high heels. her legs were very hairy and i remember thinking "wow she is so beautiful and so brave". i had a lot of dark body hair from an early age and it was fascinating for me to see someone i could relate to. thinking back on it, i think it's a bit sad that one of the first words that popped into my head were "brave". i think it's so important to also see bodies as they are and not just the "modified" version, otherwise we'll always end up thinking there's something wrong with us.

Thanks for this video, Ingrid. It’s so liberating to hear women talking openly about their body hair! One aspect that I think is also super important to consider here is the privilege of being thin. As a plus-sized person, my body hair and what I choose to do with it is under much more scrutiny than that of those who weigh less than me. Because we’ve falsely equated both hairlessness and thinness with cleanliness, should I choose to not shave, I am putting myself at risk of much more public abuse than those who are thin may face.

I think that doing whatever you want with your body is the best message! I personally grow out my body hair and don't trim it at all, I think it looks nice and natural. But there's nothing wrong with doing whatever you personally like and being open minded to what others think is so important x

Thank you so much for doing a follow up on this! I've been reflecting upon my relationship with my body hair since your last video, and have decided to start moving towards trimming and away from shaving. I want to be able to style my body hair without completely removing it or irritating my skin. Also, I love reading the comments on here. Keep rocking your bodies all, hair or no hair! ❤️

Love this so much! Body autonomy is so important. The haters on this video are wild... people get so pressed about someone's personal choices that have nothing to do with anyone but themselves
@Molscheira
@Molscheira 5 лет назад
Couldn't agree more! Even a few of my friends have these views of what a person should and shouldn't do with their body - it's wild like you said: When I asked them why they think this way, they can't really explain it.

@Organic Love there are multiple comments calling her unsanitary, gross, ordering her to shave, and announcing that they are unsubscribing but okay

@Organic Love I honestly didn't focus on them, only forced to think more about them now that you've decided to unnecessarily scrutinize my comment! My original message started off with positivity and then I made an observation from what I personally saw in the comments section. It's really not that deep lmao

I just hit my One Year mark on no shaving. I have shaved my toes here and there as I pleased though. I totally agree about the wind in your leg hairs, scared the bejesus out of me the first time it happened. My husband about died laughing at me. Just wait until you go camping or have mosquitoes around. It's a tiny pain, I keep assuming my hairs are/aren't mosquitoes. Felt like I was going crazy. Also, after hitting my one year mark. My husband likes to make light of my hair, by telling me it looks like a guy who can't grow a beard. 😂 He's very hairy himself, so we told me he was fearful that I'd have hairier legs than him. I don't know what/if he really thinks about my hairs besides that. I truly love when he absent mindedly starts playing with my leg hairs when we are hanging out on the couch. Anyways, lot of rambling. But I love this video series so dang much. Thanks for the great content. ♥️

Not scrutinizing yourself so much is definitely a good thing, if it's about hair or anything else. Sometimes I feel my leg hairs blowing in the wind, it does feel weird at first. Good job embracing your body hair! You have great natural eyebrows.

Love your attitude and perspective on this topic. Your experience with pubic hair is the same as mine and great to hear you speak to. Removing my pubic hair was always terribly uncomfortable with bleeding, scarring, irritation, etc, so I decided late in my teens I was gonna be cool with my pubic hair and I have never looked back from that. Keeping it around is very much the right choice for me.

I don't shave my hair aswell and I talk about it alot with others(Both strangers and friends). unfortunately alot of people (almost everybody) disagree with me and. They say that it's gross, but it's more gross to shave in my opinion bacause of the infections that you get from shaving. Why do we want to look like children? It's all natural to have hair on your body and it's sad that alot of people want to hide it...

Love that you are not embarrassed to really get into the details here. It’s easy to beat around the bush (no pun intended 😂) and not be completely open and honest since it was taboo for so long. But the only way it’s gonna change is if women are vocal about it - so thank you for using your platform! 🙌 Also, watching my armpit hair blow in the wind is definitely a small joy of life

I admire the way you have bloomed into being truly truly yourself. Personally, I am still in that place when I stress about my underarms being darker and never ever perfectly smooth and that little bunch of hairs growing out of my beautymark on my chin and I hate how itchy and dotty my legs get the moment I sit on grass when I've fairly freshly shaved but I have yet to overcome the stigma in my mind, and frankly I just love the feeling of shaved legs haha! But I absolutely love how open and free you are about it, I wish there was more people like you 💛 Sending you lots of love! xx

the screenshots in the beginning 🙄 body hair is supposed to grow on us because it helps to keep certain areas of the body clean, because it makes it harder for bacteria to enter the body. (This is in no way an attack against people who shave, I shave. The hairs are itchy and I like to rub dolphin legs against each other)

I only shave my legs during summer just below the knee. That's where they're the thickest and coarsest, and while they keep me nice and warm during the colder months, they make me feel very hot and itchy when the air is hot and humid. Glad to hear that your no shaving experience is so positive!!

It has been kind of hard just because I don't have people in my life who don't remove hair and I don't often see any other women around me with body hair, so it is really cool for me to be able to hear from you and be encouraged by your words. This video makes me so happy! I may not be there yet with my own body hair but it's very refreshing to hear women speak about body hair in such a analyzing way. I also got so frustrated of the comments you showed in the beginning when someone wrote he/she liked having a good hygiene and therefor shaved. The body hair is there ONLY for hygienic and protecting reasons....... The fact that people react so much to body hair really shows that it is a rebellion action for a woman to chose to have body hair = the patriarchy is real..

Thank you for this video Ingrid. I honestly thought for the longest time that I was the only one that dealt with body hair in “weird” places and it was something that I was felt ashamed of. To be honest I still do, but seeing this video and seeing how happy and content you are in your own body gives me hope that one day I’ll accept my body in the way that you have accepted yours.
@giuliannabarahonarodriguez6936
Ingrid. So proud of you to be so comfortable with your body hair. I have honestly not been able to get there and probably never will as a latina that is white passing but with extremely coarse and black body hair. I have stopped shaving so constantly but definitely have a long way to go. You rock girl!
