Yes, my none integrated t😂Uniq 12 failed and spewed Sodium Chlorate all over the floor, what a mess. I did not get it changed under warranty but did get a discount on a new integrated Uniq 12. I felt they should have replaced it free of charge as it was clearly a manufacturing fault.

I see that some people on the buildhub forum have reported issues with the phase change material being pushed out of the unit ... "My understanding is the internal temp sensor some how creeps away from the heater element." I'm considering a (heat pump powered) Sunamp for space reasons, so hope this failure mode has been resolved.

Did you ever get feedback from Sunamp as to the cause of the failure? I'm considering a Thermino ePV instead of a standard cylinder when I change to a heat pump soon but it'll be in an upstairs airing cupboard above a newly fitted kitchen so a unit failure would be a major issue!

Hi Jonathan, can I just ask you a couple of questions about your Sunamp ? Firstly, can you control it to only recharge overnight, on low tariff electricity ? Can you also limit when it recharges during the day, so it won't recharge when it's above, say, 50% 'full' ? And lastly, when it is charged, does it need power to 'work' and heat the water ? - So can it still use its stored heat to heat water during a Power Cut ? Sorry about all these, but I'm hoping to get one in the next couple of weeks, and yet there's still so much I don't know about it ! Thanks !

It’s not the material that’s the issue it’s the container the chemicals are stored in that degrades relatively quickly, as many use pouch designs,this material because it’s plastic degrades with heat drying out the oils , uv which does the same making the plastic brittle, on average I estimate based on the trial pouch the plastic stays flexible for 10- 15 years max or x amount of cycles before a pouch starts to leak

My SunAmp failed in a more spectacular way in 2022. It was one of the first batches and I was told there had been issues with the heat exchangers with the first production batch allowing seepage of water into the PCM. When this happened to mine, I notice the day before the catastrophic failure that the heat battery was actually bulging at the base. I emailed SunAmp as it was a Saturday morning saying it didn't look right, but on Sunday morning I discovered a frozen river of Salty PCM covering most of my garage floor and my electrics had tripped, presumably during the off-peak charge cycle. It seems that the water must have reacted with the melted PCM in my case and expanded caused it to rupture its container so as to empty almost the entire PCM over the floor. But as Johnathan found SunAmp were brilliant in resolving the issue even though it was a bank holiday weekend involved and I got a call back Sunday morning and someone assigned to replace my SunAmp with their latest iPV product within about a week.

Hi , Yes the 'smile' project ended back in 2021 , and the sunamps where 'free' for me to keep etc , or they would restore my old immersion cylinder , but I stuck with the Sunamp system. The new 12kWh sunamp is performing great too , Mrs P likes deep hot baths , and to date , ive not 'ran out of hot water' after a large bath , showers , hot sink water etc , in a day with little solar to 'top up' the system in a 12 hour period.

Hi Johnathan, good update & very honest. I like the idea of the Sunamp, despite your problem I’m Hoping the new Thermino Units have sorted it out. My question is the same as BobBeverley5376 - how much energy in kWh is required to fully charge a Sunamp? I’m looking to purchase the Thermino e70 for a one bed flat & initially charge it using an Economy 7 Tarriff overnight but when Smart meters begin to get rolled out for flats in 2024 chiding an Ictopus smart tarif like Agile or Flux. But wanted an idea how many kWh would be needed to charge it overnight at 15pp KWh. Also, am I right in thinking that by running a bath first thing in the morning (Approx 100 litres) would exhaust all my hotel water for the rest of the day until the next overnight cycle? Showers would obviously be the default but nice to have an occasional bath. In long term with a tarif like Agile it could be boosted at various cheap times of the day so not so much an issue. Your thoughts based on experience would be good to here. Cheers Doug
@JonathanPorterfield
@JonathanPorterfield Год назад
Hi Doug , this is a 12kWh sunamp , so this is the amount of energy it will take from 'empty' when all the PCM needs to be 'charged' ready. Day to day use is around 2-3 kWh of energy to get back to 100% after 2 showers , and washing up etc . We have 3 adults in this house for reference.

How are you getting on with these Jonathan? Its been a while since this video. Would you still recommend these? I'm getting fed up with my 12kw instantaneous water heater that I've had for 12 years eating grid power as its too large a load for my Victron 5kva Multiplus II to supply from my pylontech batteries. Also its always been fiddly to get a decent temperature, and slow to "get going" - visitors struggle with it, as its akin to safe cracking with the hot tap adjustment to "get hot". I don't have room for a normal cylinder, so this Sunamp unit sounds ideal to go in my kitchen.

Should put a version in cars to supplement chemistry battery. Friction heat from hydraulics, then heat conductive metal wired to chemistry battery to trickle charge...Then grid is bypassed and charging stations are just to replaced battery when out of cycles...Cobalt is grift. Heating is faster then hydrogen or charging car.

@davidson16
@davidson16 Год назад
If using a heat pump make sure to have a separate charge times to CH demands as you'll pull all the heat out of the sunamp and then have cold water, you will also need a high temp heat pump has to reach over 65° to activate the phase change.

@eclecticcyclist

The tank doesn't heat up markedly, that's the advantage of using a phase change material for storage. Because the temperature doesn't rise there are fewer losses. The Sunamps are rated to be roughly equivalent in energy capacity to a conventional tank.

@bobbazley5376 Год назад
@@eclecticcyclist thank you for the answer, I appreciate that it does things using the cheap time but maybe I'm missunderstanding but there must be a kWh amount of energy to do a complete phase change of the system to give you X amount of hot water for showers baths doing the dishes etc I know the sunamps come in various sizes so some can store more of that phased changed energy than others so my question is how much energy does it take in kWh (5 ? 10 ? 2 ?) its not the cost just the amount to go from a completely empty Sunamp to a full Sunamp ? I've looked at so many different solutions and I really liked the sun amp but from my understanding the sunamp equivalent of a 240ltr tank used about 5kWh of power to phase change it to usuable hot water. Other systems that Ive looked at are the Cylinders with an ASHP built into the top of them that is a simple direct replacement for the existing tank but uses efficient ASHP to fil the tank at only about 1.7kWh for a full hot water tank (can be boosted with the inbuilt element)
