Have seen another reaction to this that provided a perspective I'd never considered before, all evidence points to, while as a human he has likely had struggles, Nick has a naturally extremely high intellect, emotional intelligence and easy rapport with people so has a good chance of never having had to ever face a serious problem he couldn't overcome before. Re-watching this time he doesn't seem to be repressing for most of it, he seems to honestly believe he will overcome it and the realisation he's finally hit something he can't when it matters so much that instantly brings him down. It's a good reminder about how much adversity is so personal, and just because someone has lived a life that's blessed doesn't mean they can't struggle as much, or worse, than those who have lived hard won victories.

Not sure if it has been mentioned before, but this show was actually filmed in an abandoned hospital. All the film editing, script writing, costumes, everything, was conducted in old patient and conference rooms. One advantage in this episode is that, when they needed to film the creepy hospital scenes, they didn't need to go looking for filming locations, all the did was go to a part of the hospital that wasn't being used regularly.

I'm not Medical, but I worked at multiple hospitals (same Hospital organization) as their Network Engineer for 10 years. One time I was working on a WIFI issue right next to the OR, a surgeon walked out, turned to one of the RNs and said "I just got kicked out for farting". I snort laughed for a good 15 seconds :D

I think one of the strongest things Scrubs did was to be funny while at the same time knowing when to be serious. They could have easily gone the other way and make the serious stuff silly too, but instead they chose to keep the serious serious and in doing so it really hits home hard when it happens. Even without going too deep you feel it because it's jarring.

Dr Murdoch is what I like to call a razor. A one time use razor, that cuts through everything on the first try but then breaks the first time it encounters resistance. But this show has a lot of things going on aside from these early disposable characters. If you are really looking for things to watch and react to on a long term basis, at this point I think the best option is all of Scrubs; all eight seasons, one episode at a time.

This episode gets to the heart of communication and support. The main cast is dealing with their insecurities and while they’re not confronted with an issue like Dr. Nick is, they are working through it. Nick didn’t have the support, and he masked his issues until they were so overwhelming that he could not see anything but failure. And it’s a shame, as he appeared that he was doing very well in every other aspect of his medical career. But this is me speaking as a non-doctor and my children are now annoying teenagers. The stress in that field Has to be insane.
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD 10 месяцев назад
Agreed! And yes... Especially in the hospital, in the ICU... Very stressful at times. I think at some point, you get used to the stress level. It's not complacency by any means, it's just that your brain is used to being under that sort of stress all the time, so it doesn't make you crazy. You just learn to be cool and collected in the face of really intense situations... I would argue same thing in the emergency department (and a good number of other specialties in medicine!)

Hello! I wanted to answer what was wrong with the boy on Scrubs. It's subtle and in my experience most doctors don't clock it since they can't do much about it. He's allergic to all antibiotics. I have this issue as well. He has an infection but the antibiotics are killing him too. Eventually swapping the antibiotics caught up with him.

I don't know if you watched this show, but there is an episode of M*A*S*H that runs in a similar vein as this episode of Scrubs. A temporary surgeon comes in to help the 4077 after a outbreak of mumps sidelines the commanding officer and another surgeon. This temporary surgeon used to be in a different M*A*S*H unit and the pressure of returning to that environment triggers a severe case of PTSD. Absolutely heartbreaking, but still a great episode.

always enjoy watching your reactions to Scrubs...which is, imo, the best medical show ever made. in regards to the episode, the mental well being of a person is, unfortunately, overlooked the majority of the time or there is a lack of support structure or options for people to get help anonymously. always need a way to vent, so to speak. i know, that in my profession, we are actually required to see a psychologist every 3 months, if not more, depending on certain things.

I've had Lyme disease as teen, but, weirdly, no rash, no bullseye. My knee just hurt, but I assumed it was growing pains, until I could barely walk and my knee didn't fit into pants anymore. They drained it from neon-yellow liquid (probably The most painful procedure i've gotten) and said it was Lyme, and that if I came any sooner, the bacteria would have eaten my joint. I spent one night in the hospital and got antibiotics and other pills, including one bright purple - SO cool!!! Hate tics, they are increasing everywhere. Be aware, people, and if your knee starts to blow up - please get it checked!

This is the reason I could never be a doctor or a detective or a military officer. Having to tell someone their baby is dead or going to die would break me faster than a team of Spanish Inquisitioners. Being able to manage that is up there with Giles Corey getting smooshed to death on the toughness scale. And geez, I remember my kids being little. If you added "doctor" to that list of responsibilities, I reckon Kelso shoving me off the roof might sound more like an offer than a threat. That's super human too.

Job is hard. Ive seen many good personnel mayit be nurses, first responders or doctors, quit cause they couldnt handle death. I think you either toughen up or leave. That said, toughening up makes you seem like a di.... at times. One of my collegues offed himself (psychiatric nurse) and we foudn out cause he didnt come to work this day. So the entire team went like "that *** coudlnt do it during his days off? now we are understaffed and stressed" - that was the first reaction. Second was "he hanged himself? Oh come on what a painful ugly way to do it, he had access to meds to do it much quicker, smoother and leaving a better looking corpse" only after that we were like "hey guys....we knew this guy for years and had him around 40 hours a week. we are trained to spot signs of sucidide....why didnt any of us notice?" well....

Re - Dr. Jess' comments I'm concerned that the psychology "practiced" by the nurses is 'pop-psychology' rather than actual, effective, real psychology. It's the 'psychology' that you find in gossip circles; People who make assumptions, based on their gossip-experience, rather than based on any psychological studies. These nurses aren't familiar with the experiments that have been performed over the last 100 years, the results of those experiments and what they teach us about psychology. They aren't familiar with the discoveries of notable psychologists, nor are they familiar with any of the real principles of psychology, or CBT techniques/ conflict resolution techniques/ etc... While I agree with Jess in that they would be excellent at dealing with people, I would say it's because of their experience in dealing with people. *And that's it.* Unless they've studied psychology, they aren't going to have any special expertise in it, in the EXACT same way as they won't be able to diagnose and treat patients suffering from various infections/ diseases. Psychology isn't _The Force_ from Star Wars - you don't just _Search your feelings_ and spew out an answer. There's a LOT to be learned about how any why people behave the way they do and the implications this has on the way they're likely to behave in the future. It's a science, based on evidence, not on an ancient religion from a galaxy far, far away. Again, I agree that the nurses will be excellent at dealing with people. Much the same way as a barman can be excellent at dealing with people. That doesn't give them any expertise at all in psychology, in the same way that putting band-aids on your kids doesn't give you any knowledge of how to perform an appendectomy...

Just curious; Do doctors face the same concerns over admitting to dealing with mental health issues in a similar way to pilots, for example? I know that admitting such things to your employer, as a pilot, can honestly begin the end of your career. Even mild issues are treated with overwhelming precaution, and all the situation does is force more and more pilots to quietly try and process their issues internally. Annnnd that's not good for ANYONE involved.

We're taught that it is shameful to show weakness, that you mark yourself as prey for the strong. Boys don't cry, suck it up, stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about. So many people become afraid of their feelings, of the appearances of weakness. Going a little Coxy here. Newsflash, jackasses: Humans are weak. Physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, we are all weak. There are so many ways to break a human being intentionally and so many ways people can be beaten down just by life. As you said, that's part of the human condition and that's ok. What's also ok is leaning on each other to get through. It's ok to need help, it's ok to ask for help, it's ok to be helped. Ok, he treats people like dirt, ok he "sticks the knife in and twists it", he has emotional issues & he cant express himself, but the bottom line is that he cares about delivering quality patient care and achieving positive outcomes. Think of episodes where he goes in to fight Dr Kelso over funding, when he swaps insurance paperwork to make sure people get the procedures they need, or thunders at JD that mistakes mean that people DIE. I'm a first responder not a doctor but Dr Cox is my absolute hero for his dedication to quality medical care being available to everyone.

This is going to sound random but I'm always perplexed by youtubers logos. Is every single person on youtube just a great freaking artist? I could never draw that outline of the face you have for example on your logo. I could never be a youtuber because even if I could react to videos in an entertaining, informative way, I have no artistry in me whatsoever. I could never make a logo. I have to imagine you come up with that yourself because I just don't see you hiring a bunch of graphic designers to do that logo.

haha believe me, I am no artist!! I hired someone to help me with the logo. I put together some inspiration and then the designer gave me some options and we tweaked until it felt right 😊

oh wow, OK. Since you hadn't replied back to me I was afraid taken offense to it, like you thought it was sarcastic when I said "great freaking artist." It was a genuine compliment on your art as well as every other youtuber I watch because I can't do it and I was wondering ""goodness, is everybody in this just great at art? I couldn't do any of that!" Thanks for the reply.@@JessTheMD

@@travis303 Oh my goodness, of course not! No offense taken, and in fact I did take it as a compliment, so thank you! ❤ It's just been extremely busy with work and family the past few days 😉

I have a request for a double feature season 1 ep 14 and 15 called my drug buddy and my bed banter. They go together and I believe it will get you a lot of views
