The only real big criticism of House as a show is the license being taken is sometimes......pretty strong! But it gets you in it :)

There is no such thing as "prophylactic" surgery. Getting any surgery without actual medical necessity is beyond stupid. As a doctor, spreading this kind of idea should be illegal. Doctors need to be held to higher ethical standards than they are. Yeah, definitely can't support this message.
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD 2 дня назад
In those that have high risk, such as a genetic mutation that confers extremely high risk, it is a medical necessity for prevention. I'm sorry you feel this way, but studies show that surgeries like this are absolutely indicated *in those people that have extremely high risk*.

What a wonderful modern world that we live in, where we can detect these extreme risk factors prior to developing cancer. Perhaps the decision to undergo prophylactic surgery has saved Dr. Jess from an early death. Grateful for it.

I’ve seen some despicable behaviors by Chief residents on rounds. I think Neuro surgery and Cards are the worst. One Chief resident was actually pulling a 2nd year resident BY HIS EAR, through the NTICU while verbally berating him. The chief resident wasn’t very good and was always pissed about something. We see GREAT teams and not so great teams depending on the rotations. Our attendings were Fantastic! Most had fairly extensive military practice with mobile surgical hospitals.

Damn. I came here wondering why I hadn't seen any Scrubs reactions in a while and this happened ... Damn. I'm glad you're okay and even more glad you're putting this information out there for women (and men) who don't want to be scared. It's been a few years, but I dated a girl who had an emergency surgery for a "lump" they found in her breast. She was so worried, but luckily it ended up being nothing. Had another friend, more recently, who I met after her double mastectomy. She was open about it and admitted the whole ordeal hit her hard. Luckily, her boyfriend was there for her before, during and after. They moved away recently because Denver was too expensive, so we lost touch.

Glad to hear you are OK and had the opportunity to deal with this in a planned way and that you came through it well. Sorry to hear about no pain meds. I had a small taste of that after leg surgery with a packed dressing, ouch. My whole torso, no thank you. I just learned that they can use your own tissue for reconstruction. I assumed it would be implants. Looking forward to your reactions.

Glad you're feeling better and adjusting. My wife has had many surgeries, including brain surgery (temporal lobectomy) and a 13-hour anterior-posterior spinal fusion. My only surgical experience, by contrast, was pretty minor. When I was too embarrassed to complain about how I felt post-op, she taught me something very true. The definition of "minor surgery" is surgery that happens to someone else. When it's your body, there's no such thing as "minor" surgery. Also, out of curiosity, does health insurance cover prophylactic mastectomies? On one hand, I'd think they would, as that's much cheaper than paying for cancer treatments. On the other hand, I know how cheap a lot of insurance companies are, and they may be focused on not wanting to pay for a mastectomy if you don't currently have breast cancer, genetic predisposition be damned.

Thank you so much for sharing. It had to be difficult though it sounds like you had great support though out. This video was also informative in a good way. My family history does not include cancer so this was helpful and let me understand the concept better. My family history seems to be mainly strokes and heart disease. Glad to hear you're recovering. Mourning the body you had is a perfectly normal reaction - it happens a lot in the cancer community (luckily, you aren't joining me this club!). Yeah, you wouldn't want to have to deal with the scanxiety - even people who aren't normally anxious have anxiety around scans. That anxiety doesn't fade, no matter how many scans you have. It might morph a bit, but the scanxiety is ever present. Eliminating/minimizing that risk for yourself was the only real option you had. I hope the revision goes well and I cannot wait for the next Scrubs reaction! Maybe do a video on cancer in the YA population? It's the 18-39 age range that is not really covered much.

JD: "I would've made the same call." Cox: "Yeah?" I feel like in that moment Cox admits that he genuinely has respect for JD no matter how much he shouts at him every episode. That single "Yeah?" says so much, it says that even though right now Cox wants to crawl into a deep hole in the ground, another doctor supports the decision he made. In the moment in Cox's eyes JD isn't "Newbie" he is a professional colleague, and Cox gets a moment of reassurance that he did the right thing in having the organs harvested

Oh wow I'd forgotten about this episode with the hypochondriac who was genuinely ill. As a first responder here in the UK I'm remembering someone right now, and it doesn't matter if it's the 1st or 50th or 500th time they've called for help, THIS TIME might be the one time when they're truly in need, you have to attend the call with an open mind, you can't have the mindset of "oh it's [this person] again, wasting my time ... !" Much as I admire Cox's dedication to positive patient outcomes (genuinely, the character is my role model) I'm kinda glad that the patient gave him a telling off.

I am useless at spotting these kind of things usually, but when I first saw this episode I noticed that Ben said he would have his camera with him "until he dies", after he suffers cardiac arrest and passes away he never has his camera around his neck, it makes sense that it is a source of annoyence to Cox and he prefers to remember him without it. Watch it again and you will clock it straight away

You going off modern treatments. Had an uncle who got malaria in ww2 he was made healthy enough to live till his 90s but had flareups the more current treatment would have eliminated it.

To be fair, his phrasing regarding the veins isn't to exclude men. What he says stands as a fact on its own. The reaction to the "breaking the news" line is understandable, but do bear in mind we're in character here, and it's House talking about his experience, not what would be true for most.......normal people :)

House did actually learn from his own past and this episode. There's a future episode where a woman's leg is trapped under tons of rubble and dying, not unlike his leg but faster. He fights for her leg when she really can't, but eventually convinces her to amputate. The most crushing part...she dies in the ambulance on the way to the hospital...He did everything right, but she dies anyway.

One of the most memorable episodes of a pretty great show. The actors all amped up their focus appropriate to a situation where their collogues were the trauma victims.
