There will be many times where you need to replace a data connection with a newer one. Sometimes its because the old one was outdated or we simply lost the original file (yes this has happened to me a lot!).
If you want to join in on this tutorial, you can download the data set from my google drive:
File 1:

Replacing connections is a very important skill not just for managing a simple Tableau dashboard, but also helps us during the design process. What do I mean by this? Most of the time when I'm building things or analyzing things I don't always have complete or the latest information. So instead, as a practice we sometimes create dummy data that reflects the anticipated structure of the file coming to us.
That way, we can begin designing before he have the true data. We can then simply replace the old connection with the new one and still preserve all the development.
In this video, I'll be showing you two things; first is how to replace entire data source connection followed by how to fix fields that have had label changes. It's so easy!

This is such a life saver! I don't know how many times I have encountered this issue but this is so helpful. In the past, I would rename the new fields to match the former. Does that do the same thing?
@jellymaneducation6168
@jellymaneducation6168 3 года назад
Simply renaming doesn't always solve the issue. Plus it means every time you refresh the data, you also need to rename the field. Glad it helped

Hi Jelly, Your videos are amazing with great live examples. One of the question which I would have to ask with you and need an answer in your way. Is it possible to set role level security with different data sources. Example Oracle user can able to see the oracle data view, DB2 user can able to see the DB2 data view.. Like various data source in one dashboard. How can be possible. Please guide me on this. Thanks.

Hi, this is really helpful. But in case of data migration there will be many data sources to replace. So, is there a way to automate the process of replacing datasources without this manual effort?

Hello Jelly, I just start in a new company and I have to use tableau, could you help how to connect tableau with SAP to have the sales daily automatically, and after preparing the Sheets and the Viz how Can I publish it to my sales team? Thank you so much
@jellymaneducation6168
@jellymaneducation6168 2 года назад
Hi William, it's very difficult to do a demonstration for SAP connector simply because it's very rare for individuals outside of a company to have access to a SAP service. All my work around SAP has been with organisations and for privacy reasons can't use that access for educational purposes here in RU-vid (Which sucks because I know a lot of people use SAP!!). However, I can describe the process I've used in the past. Typically with most of these systems its a simply user name and password you type in when using the SAP connector. The ones I've used in the past are SAP NetWeaver and SAP HANA. So actually this is the easy part. The hard part with SAP is the ease of use is dependent on the quality of the setup of the data itself. SAP is not the easiest system to navigate so typically you'll assistance from your IT teams on which data sets to bring and how to connect them. Assuming you solve that problem the way you'd automate the data refresh is using Tableau Bridge. Here's a video I did on it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VPju3qCkxF8.html. As SAP is usually on-prem, you'll need to give Tableau Bridge access rights to SAP so it can self-refresh without you having to have your computer on. Hope this helps William! It’s complicated when you have multiple visuals with calculated field and dashboard already built. I face this at work daily. Then you have to clean it from the data source and synchronize it

Hi , is it possible to replace published data sources ?
@jellymaneducation6168
@jellymaneducation6168 Год назад
It sure is. Simply publish the new data source with the same name into the same location as the previous published data source. It will ask you to replace it.

@@jellymaneducation6168 I mean, replacing two data sources in a workbook
@jellymaneducation6168
@jellymaneducation6168 Год назад
Oh. Gotcha. That's even easier. So assume you already have one connected to in the workbook and Dashboards connected to it. You connect to the new data source (there's an icon on the top called New Data Source). Now you'll have two sources. Right click one of them and select "Replace Data Source"

Video is Good... but is basic product functionality. There is No trick or actual explanation on how to minimise/avoid these problems to start with. It needs explanations on how to retain formatting and other issues that occur situations when workbooks/dashboards are more sophisticated than a simple column name change.
@jellymaneducation6168

Agree with you Simon. I could talk all day on best practices, better engineering design choices, robustness builds, etc. However, there's only so much you can squeeze into a 5 min video :-) My website course goes through a lot of best practices and goes into far more detail. www.jellyman-education.thinkific.com
