Had a similar problem with my Ford Ranger. I used W-D 40 on the latch you open the gate with & the latches on both sides. Make sure ya hit the moving parts ! All those parts on mine were a little rusty.

I opened up the bolts to look inside, everything still looks brand new. I'm thinking the bed liner may be pushing it just far enough so it's not making firm contact. I'm going to try to adjust it today and see if that fixes it. I'll make a video..

Hey! Also have a 2013. I took it to the dealership and they replaced it for free under the recall. Shoot me a message if you want me to track down my invoice and send it to you to bring to your dealership.

I asked, t they said there isn't a recall on it yet. I called that number posted and they said not yet.. I'm thinking the bed liner may be pushing it just far enough so it's not making firm contact. I'm going to try to adjust it today and see if that fixes it. I'll make a video..

Did you find a solution to fix yourself? I had the same issues as you a couple of years ago on my 2011 f150, and at that time, I just needed to lube the tailgate handle latch that was sticking and tighten the rods (10 min fix). Now, though, the actual latches on the outsides won't grab. I'm going to install a hydraulic lift assist ($21) while installing the new latches ($29 ea.). Lemonade out of lemons I guess!

@@StuffIHeard I replaced the latches on each side and that fully resolved all issues. In my case, the latches were functioning but would not stay locked and would pop back open with any pull. Took me 20 min to replace both latches!

I tried lubricating it, not with WD40 but a graphite lubricant. That seemed to help the most.

A friend added lubricant to it and it works now. I tried all sorts of "fixes" and just lubing up the mechanism seems to be the fix.

josh try getting the locks to the closed position by using a screw driver to tumble the latch with it open to check they are actually locking if they are then its most likely the catch part needs adjusting by loosening the screws/ bolts on the body to allow them to fully engage when you close the tailgate
