I swear Drawk's art isn't just getting faster but steadily improving in quality as well. Watching other people cry at One Piece never gets old and I tend to cry again myself. I swear Oda has the keys to my soul at this point. Regarding the most recent material, I have cried with every chapter release for the last 7 chapters.
Oda’s dad is an Oil Painter who gave him his start in art. Oda knew he wanted to be a mangaka young and relentless perused this goal, dropping out of soccer club to practice drawing more. He seems to have a good relation with his uncle who is a taxi driver who regularly gives out One Piece volumes. When he first got into manga his editors said he was a deeply angry youth, who took manga very seriously.
The Merry dying was the first time I ever cried at media and it opened up my freaking soul forever. Like the impact of the Merry for me is pivotal to my development.
Crying at media is so liberating to people who have been taught not to show emotion as a child. I don't know if it was the first time I allowed myself to cry at media, but meruem's end in hxh's chimera ant arc absolutely changed the way I react to media I experience.
I was very cynical towards One Piece until I was like... 22 years old or someething? Even then I only started looking into it because it bothered me how popular it was when I couldn't see the appeal. Jumping from "this anime does nothing for me" through out most of it and then jump straight to my first big emotion towards it being "I can't believe I'm crying over a ship having a viking funeral" really stood out to me. Nowadays I think I'm much better regulated emotionally after a lot of therapy and other parts of the series have made me emotional, but that really was the biggest gut punch for me.
55:00 a little correction: when Luffy said he doesn't have other crewmates talents, he didn't say he isn't a sharpshooter, he said he _cannot even lie_ I think it's a really profound statement in more ways than one.
for real though. he's such an honest person, he really can't lie because his face is a dead giveaway when he tries. also all his punches are trying to emulate gunslinging, he considers himself a damn good shot.
@@vinn418dood on that regard: right after they got Going Merry, Luffy tries to shoot from its cannon and misses, then Usopp hits the mark to Luffy's awe. Live action makes them all incompetent and only Nami keeps cool head. I'm not against empowering Nami, but I feel like Usopp got shafted too much in LA to also lose his mechanic prowess like that =/
@@StanNotSoSaintyeah there are a few character moments that I felt the LA dropped the ball on in their changes to condense the story. that is one of them. I don't know how nami will work in the alabasta arc, where will the character development from scared nomal person equal with usopp go, when she starts as a highly all around competent brave boss babe brawler.
@@vinn418dood yeah. But at least Arabasta contains one of the two Nami's solo fights, so it's not too egregious to see her be capable. And actually I personally wouldn't mind to see her do more BUT I'm even more interested in Usopp doing more, but so far he did even LESS and I'm not cool with that >=[
@@StanNotSoSaint That said, there is AMPLE opportunity for Usopp to get character moments in the stretch from Logue Town to Alabasta. There's a lot of great scenes and interactions for him to come.
On the subject of Usopp having a stronger connection to Merry than anyone else on the crew, one thing I don’t think enough people bring up is that the Merry was originally gifted to the crew by Kaya. The ship was essentially a gift from Usopp’s girlfriend, so he’s had the strongest attachment to the ship from day 1.
Yeah, not only does Ussop connect with the Merry because he feels just like how they, she? Is being left behind because of they're weakeness so will he. but also the factor that it's an extension of Kaya a part of him and her that has led to this journey only to realize that extension is slowly dissolving as the world gets bigger, tougher, and dangerous. He feels the things that he brought to table. Things he provided, things that came with him, from his home, things that he considered important are getting left to the wayside, into past, and he can't accept that. He can't see a future where he can provide anything better. Not to mention that bond becoming deeper when he sees the Merry working on itself to keep going only for it to be not enough.
Several dozen moments that she definitely needs to watch in the anime because the anime elevates it to even greater heights! Hisashiburi Dana, mugiwara!
I love how she never understood the emotional impact of losing a ship back then, and now she gets to be one of us crying over a ship in a story about a stretchy pirate boy.
I've been waiting for this one! I kinda want Mamma Drawk to go back and listen to her opinions on Usopp from his introduction. I love the Meta-ness of how Oda's like "Oh you think Usopp is useless and a waste...just you wait, he thinks that too, times 1000"
I know everyone talks about the character work in Water 7. And the character work is perfect. But to me, Water 7 has the best and coolest worldbuilding in all of One Piece. It’s so different and interesting. I think when the Galley-La company was first envisioned, half of them weren’t traitors, they were all just regular shipwrights and the villain was someone else entirely. Fun Fact: in the live-action, you can see crates of shipbuilding equipment that say “Galley-La” on it.
I think the reason the character work in water 7 is so memorable is that oda seems to really struggle to take his characters in arcs that stick with them, but water 7 has the best character arcs of the whole series and they actually stick. Without going into spoilers, there's an amazing arc in one of the newest arcs that actually feels pointless because the character it's about just reverts to exactly the same they were before it, and that is the way oda unfortunately takes most of his arcs.
@@samfisher6606 I was doing it more for other people because a lot of viewers are reading with mama drawk. So, spoilers for the manga: . . . . . . . . Yes, Sanji. He had an incredible arc where he, for the first time in his life seemed to have a non-idealized relationship with a woman that broke down his character to the ground and reconstructed it... Just to have him act like the "haha horny Sanji" in wano onwards again and I was genuinely disappointed in oda for that. Nami, Usopp and Robin are allowed to have arcs and change the way they behave, why not Sanji? It just disappointed me very much. That joke has been tired for more than 20 years and his character was flanderized to the point where it takes priority over his actual character.
@@wumbojet I wasn't trying to spoil anything. And saying "A character goes through character development" doesn't feel like a spoiler. Character development is inherent and obvious in a series that's been going on for so long.
It is worth pointing out that Usopp gave Luffy much more of a fight than any other person without a fruit or specific other abilities, i.e. mantra, at least to that point in the story. At least for me, this fight really showed just how much potential he has as a fighter. Not to mention, he was on his feet right away after losing- after face-tanking the same attack that catapulted Alvida off-screen, beat Axe-hand Morgan, and shattered Don Krieg's armor. Arguably, it should also be more than the punch that left Bellamy knocked out and catatonic for an unknown amount of time.
Luffy just doesn't have the same reasons to fight ussop like the other ones u mentioned. If he really hated ussop and wanted to fight him like the other villains, the crew would have 9 members rn.
@@allpissedup229 He absolutely would have won. Luffy's refusal to fight back would have cost him the fight. Just look at the thrashing Usopp gave him until Zoro told him to man up and be a captain. If it was that bad while Usopp was injured it would have been worse if he wasn't.
Something else about klabautermann, in their lore for the real world, actually seeing one is generally a bad sign, as it signifies that the ship is doomed.
@@MayMoment_Nothing, he stated his opinion. Usopp did project his insecurities onto Luffy and choose to forget everything he knew about Luffy and the rest of the crew because he was all up in his feelings.
You forgot to mention Sanji kicking Luffy in the face during that argument. I think it's worth watching in the anime. And Chopper's adorable voice crying amd screaming. What an amazing scene.
oda liked the voice acting of bon clays voice actor so much he wanted him to voice a character in the crew. and so he created franky at least partially with that wish in the back of his head
I vividly remember when I got to the scene with Merry. I was reading, and they were talking about it, and I remember it almost being like real grief. I was denying my feelings and was like "this is fucking stupid. There's no- it's just a boat. it's just a bo..." and shaking my head as the tears started coming. The harder I'd fight them, the stronger the emotions would get until the water works came. No wonder Oda called this Arc Water Seven: he was gonna open the floodgates fr😅😢
In this episode of Drawk Mom's emotional breakdown we find out that she not only has incredible media literacy, she also has incredible design literacy. Spoilers ahead, I guess? . . . . . So the whole early guess of "Oh, I guess we are having a tiny shipwright to contrast what it's wanted/expected" is right on the money with actual beta designs of the crew, and the first design Oda had in mind was what eventually became the Klabautermann. But holding on to that guess to see if it fits the crew is another point to her. One of the reasons Chopper sticks with Brain Point all the time rather than his human or half forms is because of reckognizable silhoetting. Understanding that a small shipwright would have a conflicting silhouette with Chopper is good character design literacy. It is also why all the tall members of the crew are wildly different, with very skinny, very top heavy and very round, because they are all shapes that the crew didn't have.
I feel like an important thing to note about the fight between Luffy and Usopp is why Usopp specifically is so attached to The Merry. When Usopp joined so did Merry. It was because he was friends with Kaya that they got the ship in the first place, and this is exactly why it is so important to him. It's so important to him that important isn't even the right word, it's like the ship is a part of him. In fact Usopp takes better care of Merry than himself at times, and this all stems from the growing fear Usopp has of being useless. As the story goes on, everyone keeps getting stronger and stronger. The straw hats learn new techniques, break their limits and prove themselves to be great warriors, but that is not what Usopp does. Usopp is a sort of skill monkey that just kinda wings it and hopes he doesn't die, which I personally love about him, but can be clear to see why he did not feel on the same level as say Zoro. But, The Merry is so important to the Straw Hats. The Merry is literally their home and brought them everywhere they needed to go. From a purely practical point of view, Merry is the most important member of the crew. That's why when Usopp hears Luffy say so casually that they need to get a new ship, Usopp simply heard that as a confirmation of his greatest fear. He was no longer useful. His skills were no longer needed, and what he brought to the table can and will be replaced. This was the most real display of Usopp's insecurity with himself shown up to this point and I think it's done very well. I have more to say about Usopp, why I relate to him so heavily in Water 7 and Impel Down, and why he is my fave straw hat, but I will save that for the next Mom Piece video ;)
As someone who is caught up in the story and hearing what your mom is saying. I actually started crying the way she described Luffy and Ussop’s fight in the middle of work, it was so touching and beautiful. I love this series 😢❤
My favorite opening to a arc especially in the dub when i was rewatching just hearing "is that a frog doing the front crawl?!" It just reminds me oh yea one piece is a weird world with weird people
This is the arc that was running when I started reading the manga and remains one of my favorites to this day; so happy you're enjoying it so much. Back before the CP9 reveal, the primary shipwright candidates in my corner of the fandom (RIP LJ) were Paulie and Kaku, so you can imagine the shock.
Ah ok there's some misconception happening here, the poneglypse generally carries information about ancient history, information etc. They're not necessarily needed to find the ancient weapons.
Doing my new favorite exclamation and laugh some serious injustice by saying his name wrong. I can walk up to christians and say my Jesus has a better laugh.
The dialogue in the anime when Usopp is thrown in the water, he knew that the ship wasn't repairable. He knew the keel was broken. He knew it couldn't be fixed. It was his denial, insecurity, and mounting guilt that made him go so much harder into denial. Heck, Sanji commented on how crap his repairs were back in Jaya. Even then Usopp was saying "I'm not a shipwright, you know." Usopp sees himself in the ship and he's afraid that he would be tossed aside because he's not as good or as resilient as the rest of the crew
I was there in twitch but simply had to enjoy your drawing, your analysis, your crying and the editting of it all again. Shout out to you and your Team! Thank you for this incredible journey with you.
I couldn’t stop laughing at the top 5 debacle 😂 Amazing analysis from mama drawk. I never thought of the Captain Usopp/Merry connection but holy smokes that makes a lot of sense.
I did manage to catch this one on stream, so I won’t watch this video fully. I WILL comment for the engagement though! Please keep this series up! It’s so good!
That Franky drawing just got better and better! I feel like we can see your progression as an artist from stream to stream; keep up the great work! Also, if we could purchase some of these artworks as wallpapers, I'd be totally down for that. We need a gallery and everything. 🙂
Woah, I was actually looking up your twitch yesterday because I thought I missed the recent releases and was wondering where water seven was. Great Timing!
At the time the debate was actually Paulie vs Kaku for crewmate. Even after the CP9 reveal some people held out hope for Kaku, obviously just in denial but still. Franky wasn't even an option for people until the Tom flashback, and even then a lot of people just disliked him so much they were hoping for Paulie over Franky until the end.
Franky has come a long way for me, but he's always my least favorite member of the straw hats. I don't hate him by any stretch. He's just not as cool as the rest.
i think the most interesting part was aqua laguna is almost certainly the reason long ring long land has its lower tides you can walk between. also many will say this is confirmed as as far as iv checked iv never seen oda say thats true its just really popular
I think that Usopp V Luffy is top 5 most important fights in the series from a narrative perspective. In fact I will say it ties Zoro V Mihawk for 1 in my mind. The one moment when Usopp was truly a brave warrior of the sea. Luffy learning the heavy responsibility of being a captain. Zoro stepping up as first mate. I still need to see Usopp fight like that again. No fear. Just determination. Because let's face it. Usopp is just 2 or 3 steps from being Strawhat Batman. P.S. That Drawk the Djinn pic was fire and it needs to be on a shirt. I wear a large. Post me a link for preorder.
About family in one piece, we know very little aside from the fact that oda's dad is/was a taxi driver and used to present volumes of one piece to his passengers, which i just think its adorable xD
Water 7 is a very emotional arc so is even the next. And it will always be. Plus we are all riding togegher this roller coaster of emotions called One Piece.
14:20 You might theorise about scribes all you want, but the more apparent meaning of "kaku" is "corner". As in his square nose. ("Shikaku", "four-corner", is the Japanese word for square.)
Also corners or angles are obviously something a shipwright (or any kind of carpenter) would think about and deal with all the time, and he's the one who seems to have enjoyed his life undercover the most and like he's actually going to miss it.
