Unfortunately, kaku can also mean many other things, such as shapes with edges or level (grade). The list for kanji pronounced kaku on my phone is over 50 characters long.
It's a great emotional arc, but I vehemently disagree about the dialogue of the Goa nobles. I think it is super ham fisted writing. It feels like Oda is trying to villinize them super quickly by having them spout the quick notes on their character motivation sheet. And it just falls flat. Worst examples are the first talk between Sabo and his dad, where he flat out tells him that he views him as a tool for his own goals, and the scene you mention, where some dude explains to his daughter how poor people chose to be poor through how they were born. That would make some sense if we'd established solid believe in reincarnation, but that hasn't been properly established. So it's just nonsense that doesn't resonate. Why not give a speech about the natural order of things and explain, that better people are born into better circumstances and that she also wouldn't feel that much sympathy for some rodent that was about to be exterminated... The over the top writing of villains serves Oda well a lot of times, but here it feels extremely forced. I don't like to be just told to hate characters or groups of people. I'd like to get there on my own.
im late to mom piece (just found it) and now i think i have to chime in for a Quick comment... punk hazard feeling underrated is partly fault to fishmen island. that arc was so hard to read weekly. i even stopped reading one piece for a year or two 10 or so chapters into fishmen island. i started reading weekly around the time punk hazard was close to its end and thus making it feel so much smoother. and i can imagine, i am not alone in this.
I'm sad she didn't about Kaido sayong "Life is more then a series of yes or no questions" cause i just found thst part so telling and quite...wise. For him to say.
I also think his line about not caring about glory truly makes him a God like character in the sense that God is supposed to help you with you realizing it.

Widespread famine was WAY more common in Edo Period Japan than you think, and it was as much a result of government corruption and incompetence as natural disasters. You're also greatly underselling the scale of the major famines; one of the worst examples, the Great Tenmei Famine of 1782-1788, started as a result of natural disasters and poor harvests, but was greatly exacerbated and turned from a regional problem into a national crisis by the mercantilist policies of the shogunate at the time, which had led to less food being stored for hard times (since it made more money to sell it off) and less hardy crops that made more money being grown in greater amounts. Local authorities also massively under-reported the scale of the issue for fear of being punished for incompetence, greatly diminishing the central government's sense of urgency and slowing down their response. The official death toll was something like 120,000, but census records suggest it could have been as high as about 900,000(!) in reality. According to "Introduction to the Hinin Taiheiki: The Paupers’ Chronicle of Peace" by Kyoko Selden, writing for the Asia-Pacific Journal (Volume 14, Issue 14, Number 4), which is available to read online BTW: "In the Edo period, famines occurred frequently, imposing disaster. Major famines occurred in roughly thirty to forty or fifty to sixty year cycles, with minor famines interspersed. Typically in Kansai (western Japan), the direct cause was drought, while in Tōhoku (northeastern Japan) it was cold, but floods could also wreak havoc in many areas. Famine was also the product of the political and social system." The lack of massive agricultural revolts by the peasantry is a testament to the Shogunate's ability to repress and control their populace (and in some ways the Tokugawa Shogunate deserves to be called one of the first "police states" in history), NOT to a lack of real hardship and deprivation - even desperation - among the people. Accounts of families being forced to commit horrific acts of desperation to survive - which I would need to give a trigger warning to even recount - are *rampant* once you get past the sanitized and romanticized accountings of the era.
Something like killing a little girl for (seemingly) laughing at you isn't really a specifically "North Korea" thing, it's very much also a samurai thing from the Edo Period. Samurai in that time literally had not just the legal right but a perceived *obligation* to draw their sword and strike down anyone of a lower class whom they perceived to be insulting/offending their honor in some way. It's called kirisute gomen, "the right to cut and leave." The socioeconomic status and general culture of being a samurai in the Edo Period created a lot of thin-skinned assholes who frequently took out their frustrations on those lower on the totem pole than themselves, which the government was happy to enable with only minor restrictions as a sort of "release valve" to keep those frustrations focused downward rather than upward. If Oda is using this as a specific political commentary, he may be commenting on the darker reality of the samurai ethos and its potentially deeply cruel obsession with honor and reputation, which is offended by something as harmless as a child's laughter and can only think to respond to such an "offense" with cold-blooded murder.
It’s funny because i think Oda didn’t know how to convey that Kinnemon knew advance Bio-feedback as a major samurai of Wano, so he did that bit about him farting as a way to talk. That’s like a very high level of management of every bit of body anyone could ever manage.
Mama Drawk is such an exceptional reader and communicator. She predicted Luffy would be a sun god HUNDREDS of chapters ago and NEVER let to go of her conviction on it. She KNEW she was right and kept on adding to it every time she came across new foreshadowing
