My thoughts & insight on Atomos new registration requirements to activate codex.

Atomos latest firmware now requirer device registration on my.atomos.com This is ok, however, any codex that ships with the device will now have to be activated as well such as DNx and ProRes RAW. This also open doors for them to allow paid codex update after the device purchase such as H.265 HEVC recoding. What they have done here is decoupled the device firmware and codex. Which is a smart thing to do but can be annoying for the users. If you buy your device new this is ok but if you buy use then beware because if you should update the firmware, there's a chance that some of the codex, even the one that ships with the device might no longer works. This is because the registration and codex activation is tied to the registered owner account. And in my testing I have not found a way to deactivate / unregister a device from the account. I'm sure that you can contact Atomos for help on this but it makes this process a pain. Also it is not clear when H.265 codex for instance is purchased, does it stay with the device or the account holder. Find out my thoughts in this video.

Thanks for providing some background. I knocked a couple stars of my Amazon review and mentioned this. Others should do the same -- we shouldn't tolerate this without complaining.

I'm with you. It is a lock in and it is not going away sadly. This also deterred second hand sales of devices as well.

Thank you for making this video! It really helped me make a decision if buying a used Atomos ninja V is worth it. The whole registering process seems like a extra hassle IMO.

If they limit the ability of second-hand owners to re-register and update, etc., they must also offer the ability to de-register from the previous owner, which should be as easy as sending them proof that you are physically in possession of the device.

So I paid for H.265 about year ago when I bought a Ninja. I just bought another one (because the older one smashed into pieces from a long fall) and I can't transfer the H.265 codec I bought to my new device? I have to buy it again? that is ridiculous

You might be able to, it would require a call to atomos or support ticket.

I had the issue with buying a pre owned unit. I was able to resolve this through Atomos customer support. I’m not sure if the contacted the original buyer or not but it’s been resolved.

Yeah this makes it difficult to buy and sell and like I said, the website does not allow or give you a quick way to unregistered a device. I'm glad that your issue got resolve but it is annoying and time consuming non the less.

I am unable to activate ProRes Raw and H.265. I scanned the code, registered on the site and the only available feature for my atomos ninja 2 (2023) is AVID Dnx , why? why isn't ProRes Raw and H.265 available for my device. I can't even download the token for AVID Dnx and yes I am on the latest firmware update for my device which is 11.04.00, the button doesn't even work on the website to download the token for AVID neither. What is really going on? and customer care is neither here or there. This is outrageous. Can someone help me please.

Your best bet on this is contact their customer support as lack there of as it may be, Lots of this is their backend that they need to fix or offer you solutions

I think you are having the same situation as I am. My case is even worse. I thought the golden brown new NINJA monitor was called NINJA V OS 11. I registered my monitor choosing it as NINJA V OS 11 ( while mine is not that one, it is the golden brown one). Now I can not change back, activate or do anything. Atomos really fucked up in setting their product name. For example. The old version is called NINJA V, and the new version which was just recently released is called NINJA. LOL, I don't know if you guys are confused between the names or not but I am. Why don't they just set like NINJA V and NINJA (2023) or NINJA V II something? on the register page on their website is super confusing between these name.

Good video information, but what can we do if we got the device second hand from an online shop? it doesn't work, it keeps saying the device is already registered any advice on what and how to de register it and register it again

This is one where you have to contact Atomos directly for help. And hopefully they are willing to help you.

I agree with you. We can’t even figure out how to get the H.265 token onto our atomos…🤦‍♂️

Usually, you download the token and put it on an SSD, then insert that SSD into the Atomos. I think you then go to the codex part and activate it. But again I don't know if they have change process again in the newer firmware. And even on supported SSD I have been running into issues with H.264 where the SSD is not fast enough. Lot of issues and I can't say that I am happy with the H.265 upgrade, kind of a waste of money for me really.

Bought mine on eBay. Completely unusable. No way to contact seller. Have a job in a few days I’m absolutely cooked.

There are a few ways out of this. One way is to contact eBay and initiate a complaint against the seller or start a return. Also, you can contact Atomos to see what they can do to help in the meantime. It is not ideal, but you could buy or rent a new one. It is frustrating, yes, but not without any way out.

I recently bought a Ninja V + from Gear Force, it was partly registered only ProRes RAW has been activated. How do I continue the activation? it keeps saying product already registered.

Is this a used Ninja? If so you you have to contact Atomos for help deactivating the old user and activate yourself on the Ninja V + before you can download token to active the other codex. ProRes RAW is a standard codex that comes with the device.

Same , I got mine , registering was a hassle , then once I finally got registered I go to my devices page and click on the ninja v and it just sends me to a blank page . So frustrating

I would contact Atomos for help. I wish I could help more but I have yet to update my other Atomos to the new firmware ;) Too annoying.

The registration form has a "Where do I find this?" info button for Device ID. In summary: touch the timecode display then navigate to the INFO tab where the DID will be displayed.

This is just the way forward, I don't think there is a fix nor will Atomos change trajectory.
