Hm, I don't have any issues with playback, it works like Danne's build. Have you tried to re-install it?

@@vladimirkirillovskiy8056 Thanks for your reply. I have tried reinstalling it and even tried the other versions. I suspect it's due to some modules not installed properly. On my other canon DSLRs, the raw_twk module has to be activated for the playback to work, but on the EOS M when activated it freezes the camera and I have to remove the batteries. Do you use that module? Thanks again

@@timotheemohr2805 No, the only modules I use - crop_rec, mlv_light, mlv_play, mlv_snd and sd_uhs. I guess mlv_play the one you need.

Hey! Well, the basic - check that it shoots video and photos and saves them on SD card without problem. Battery shouldn't be swollen - not a big deal, but will need to be replaced. All buttons should work. Nice idea to check HDMI and mic ports, but not always possible. Check autofocus, probably not going to use it, but should work. Remove the lens and check the sensor - shouldn't be damaged or dirty. Also, there is a test when you put the lens cap on and take a long exposure photo - the result should be just black image, possibly with noise, but it shouldn't have any bright dots, if there are it may be dead pixels. Also for Magic Lantern you would need a good SD card, something like SanDisk Extreme Pro with 170mb\s. Keep it in mind as well. That everything I can think off the top of my head.

In my old Canon 5D Mark II days, anything right above black in video was noisy. My work around for an alley sequence for my short film noir was to shoot a plate of the alley at a low ISO and layer that over the scene, which was simply my protagonist walking forward. I did that all in Photoshop CS 4 Extended in It's animation timeline. It was very successful.
