Hi friends! Today, I'm sharing my Thoughts on DISNEY'S LITTLE MERMAID LIVE: IN CONCERT on ABC. And then I'm seeing a production of THE LITTLE MERMAID: THE MUSICAL! It's a vlog jam packed with mermaids.
Anywho, if you missed it, ABC aired #LittleMermaid Live, which was actually a hybrid combo of the animated film and the songs performed live. We'll be discussing the Flounder puppet, Graham Phillips (of Riverdale and 13 the Musical!), and what I wish ABC had done more of.

Ariel was singing while she had her vocal chords removed during this, and I was confused so this was my conversation with my mom: Me: why is she singing?! She’s not supposed to be singing!!! Her vocal chords are removed! Mom: maybe that’s why she keeps going flat My mom is a savage😂

YourCreativeDreamer Yeah, it would have better if they had a musical number with young Ursula and Eric. That’s what I was expecting from that sequence ,and that would have been better! Making Ariel sing in that sequence made it just look like a show instead of real! I was confused and didn’t buy the actress lost her voice! A missed opportunity in that scene! Could have been a lot better than what it was!

YourCreativeDreamer Yes,but the actress plays Ariel,so she should play the full role without her voice until the end. Despite some people say, this might be the best live adaptation we get, because blackwashing Ariel in the upcoming live action remake is an insult to fans of the original classic! In response, Disney will just call people who don’t like the change racists ,and count their money! Had to say that ,but overall the current live action spectacle was good,but it could have been better!

I feel like Queen Latifah’s “Poor Unfortunate Soul” was AMAZING!!! And speaking of the puppets when I went to Disney World I saw a production of Finding Nemo the Musical and they had puppets but also the actors on stage controlling the puppets. It was actually really amazing!!! Btw have Disney+ and was watching High School Musical: The Series when I saw Julia’s character I SCREAMED!!!!!!!!

So with all of these live shows I literally try to go in with as little knowledge as possible so I actually didn’t know that it was a concert and I was so personally disappointed with it. And while I appreciate what the cast did everything felt disjointed to me. And the performance I personally was most amped for Ariel missed so many marks for me even though I know she’s incredibly talented. Overall Eric did steal the show but I did love John Stamos scene. Those two I think had the most enthusiasm with everything. Non-song related though my favorite thing done hands down was arial Ariel. And least favorite thing had to be the movie in the background. I wish they would have really staged this. I think the enthusiasm would be so much more real because it’s a true story their telling instead of singing songs every 10-15 minutes (honestly though we did not need that long to watch an animated movie most people have probably seen 100 times. Sorry for the rant. I love you and your content Kat and I’m so glad to hear you talk about this.

I feel like Auli’i suffered from some of the same pitfalls you touched on in your “How to play a Disney princess” video. And they did her really dirty by making her do the Broadway step-up in Part of Your World: Reprise instead of the movie step-down when the higher notes are in her break. On a tech note: all of the aerial “swimming” looked awful, as did the design for the fins. I feel like they didn’t put as much though or effort into this at they should have; especially given the reaction to RENT. I just hope the live action Little Mermaid movie has some better design. 🤷‍♀️

I enjoyed The Little Mermaid Live, but honestly, I'd rather just watch the movie or watch a stage show than watch a hybrid. I really wish they'd just done a staging of the Broadway show! But it was still fun- I mean it's still The Little Mermaid with all that great music. The Flounder puppet was cute on it's own- it just didn't look anything like Flounder! I used to puppeteer at Voyage of the Little Mermaid at the former MGM Studios. We had puppets that looks just like the movie.

I left after Under the Sea because Sebastian's outfit was off-putting at first. But let me tell you, it brought about a joy within me that I hadn't felt in so long. It was just as colorful if not more than the animated film and I whole-heartedly believe they went all out. The starfish? Amazing. I'd love to be a starfish just flipping around. The jellyfish aerial silks? Fantastic. Just everything. I was at a party under the sea for god's sake. But that's all I had to say. Auli'i was absolutely adorable. edit - also yes they pitch corrected. on auli'i's first big note from the reprise, she was a little shaky at first. but in the recording I just saw, she stuck that note out or they turned her audio down a tad

Well, I didn't watch Little Mermaid Live, but I *did* watch the Great Performances broadcast of The King and I. And I must say, 10/10, Kelli O'Hara is a joy, Ruthie Ann Miles is a survivor to the fullest, and those kids were the cutest darn things.

The biggest thing about Little Mermaid Live that I didnt like was the Quartet was performed as a duet. Its one of my favorite songs in the Broadway show, but I thought it lost its emotion, maybe just because it lost Triton and Sebastians part. I was prepared to sob with that song, and it did nothing for me.

I love that you have so much positivity toward live Disney shows and you agree that there’s so much more deep-ness to them than people give them credit for. I’m going to be auditioning for a community theatre production of Frozen jr. this year, and I’m really hoping for Elsa, of course because I’m going to be 18 and therefore one of only 2, maybe 3 senior girls auditioning, but because I think there is so much within her character that can be explored and expanded upon, especially in an onstage setting, and whether I get the part or not I’m really nervous that people will just write the whole show off as Disney crap, like even with Monster being removed from the jr. version (which is a TRAGEDY) Elsa, and many other characters are so much deeper and multidimensional in the musical than in the movie, and I don’t want adults and peers to think it’s just a dumb a stupid kids show.

I hadn't realised it till I saw this televised event, but the ship was in no immediate risk of sinking to begin with. It was only when lightening struck the mast and set the sail ablaze that the real seed for the wreckage was planted. And they had a cache of ammunition on board.

John Stamos and Queen Latifah Killed it as Chef Louis and Ursula! I was so disappointed, I wish they had advertised this correctly! I wish they had done "Daddy's Little Angel" "Beyond my Wildest Dreams" and "One Step Closer" in other words I wish they had done more live stuff. This felt like the most rushed cheap productions ever! Like seriously this felt like a Disneyland Little Mermaid Spectacular! The 30th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast is coming up in 2 years and I hope they either do the full musical, because it was the 1st Disney theatrical in 1994, or just do a Live concert version of Beauty and the Beast! I thought Shaggy Auli'i and Graham were just there. To be fair to Auli'i , she had so much on her plate, signing the notes correctly while on those harnesses and wires, her voice just sounded done by If Only. But Auli'l just constantly looked as if she had a lot on her mind during her numbers, so didn't really act the character of Ariel!

I liked it, but I watched it when I was sick so I may not have a super clear memory 🤭 Speaking of hsmtmts, it was an amazing show, but liv and Josh took the whole thing to the next level. this is a small reason: but the reason why I didn’t really like If Only is because they changed a lyric which I felt is very important to Eric’s character. In the original, he sings, “and at the ball, what will outcome? Maybe, I’ll find that voice or I’ll lose her?” But in the live version they changed it to “memories fade, strange how they blur, but when she calls to me, I’ll know it’s her” This makes Eric seem like he never cared for Ariel without her voice and is still looking for the voice when in the animated film/broadway show, he gave up his search, realizing that he loves Ariel. I know that there was no ball BUT STILL! They make Eric seem like an asshole.
