Yup, that sinking also caused the worst shark attack in history AND had the captain be court martial for the ship being sunk by the enemy (the only captain in WW2 to recieve such a punishment).
She has a firm spot in my "throw-some-ships-at-it" fleet, for when I don't really know what I want to use. Port-kai, London-kai, and Indy-kaiwaii all make a decent enough vanguard that I don't really have to think too much about strategy and just have fun.

Before Baltimore took over as the 1st position vanguard for my Eagle Union fleet i've always used Portland as i always felt she was the US equivalent to Eugen. Add to that that i got Portland very early she carried me through many of the first areas of the game that i played so she'll always retain a special place in mha heart.
Been playing Azur Lane for a year now. One of the first things I saw was the top comment on Portland to retro her so she carries you. And I did just that. My first vanguard ship to reach 120 many months later. I still use her to this day occasionally. Ditched Indy along the way though, that baggage was too heavy to carry along.
Fun Fact: the Portland Class of Heavy Cruisers are Known to Be Modifications of the Northampton Class of Heavy Cruisers, but she is Lightly Armored by Heavy Cruiser Standards, the Only Heavy about her is Her Armaments, this is also the Reason why her Choice of Clothing is... Provocative, same with Indianapolis, her Initial Design and Retrofit is Based off her Design History Her Initial Design which was The Main Reason of her Provocative Clothing, Only Had like 1 inch of Armor, but She Was Up Armored to 3.25 and 5 inches of Armor, this Probably Inspired her Retrofit, and Her Tankiness in the Field, an Overall Stat Increase. Sadly the Fate of Both Ship are Sad Ones... Portland was Scrapped at 1959 Indianapolis was Torpedoed by I-58 After Delivering Component of the Little Boy and Fat Man Atomic Bombs (Hence why she is Sitting on a Atomic Bomb) On a Happier Note.... You Gotta love this Siscon of a Ship Girl... that Also Loves the Admiral/Commander! Now that's Something worth while

When it came back online they announced the removal of 18 ships, all of which got in common that they show a lot of cleavage, from the obtainable pool. Meaning whoever got them there can keep, but those who don't can never get them ever again.

Portland was one of the few ships I had a few months ago who could survive long enough (when paired with indianapolis) to see me through high level event stages, Like SP and Hardmode stages. But since I spent time saving and pulling from the Gacha, I have a lot of good shipgirls now.
Ah Portland. She's been my Frontline tank for years in my Eagle Union-only fleet and worked well up to W12. My classic formation is: Portland (Retro) - Baltimore - Sandy (Retro) A good balance of AA, Firepower, and Survivability. Portland can tank a lotta damge, while also dealing a decent amount. Personally I use HE. Baltimore is my main AP focused dmg dealer And Sandy is, well does Sandy things. Blows planes out of the sky, and deals consisntent dmg.
Quite miffed that I didn't get Baltimore during the event rerun. So I'm stuck on Sandy, Laffey Retro, and Portland Retro for the Vanguard. Looks like i have to level up Indy and pair her with portland then.
Post refit she is the bar all later tanks must meet or pass to be regarded as good. It's remarkable as it's by the stat boosts alone as she gets new new skill. Mind you that she won't be out damaging the heavy hitters, but she won't be dead weight offensively. I'd argue she's better than Hipper in this regard. The real issue with her sister skill is that Indy is worse than Portland in damage output. Now if she were to get a similar refit like her sister.... well the duo would become quite a thing. Her character story is a good look at other traits of hers, like a good head on her shoulders as she leads a ragtag group (Hiei, Dorshire, Iroha, etc) to victory in an exercise. Though I gotta ask if you plan on redoing certain vids due to the Dec 22nd update buffing a number.

I tried to run Indy and Portland together once, it was indeed a bad time. Admittedly I never ever leveled her red skill, however it does not change my view that Portland retrofit is probably in the top 20 of Heavy Cruisers in game
honestly I have her in my current main boss fleet since I need to level her for the training missions and honestly I've just got the thought process of "if I'm already required to use her for the sake of getting her to level 100 I'm going to make use of her" she and Indy do good work, Alwyn, Long Island, Saratoga, and Yorktown are my four other boss fleet members and are designed to make up for Indy and Portland's shortcomings in damage (mostly the carrier trio Alwyn is there to make sure the carriers survive longer)

Well that doesn't matter much anymore, this sweet and beautiful shipfu was banned from the game on Chinese servers and I don't know how long it will apply to us, but you do an excellent job with the videos and your channel, congratulations on your work and if you can you can make a video of Baltimore and Sirius ?.
Maybe we can get a survival game mode, survive as long as possible, and dealing dmg is not the main priority cuz enemy ships will just keep spawning to replace sunk ones. Then I might use Portland more
She's resources friendly, you can easily limit break her with herself because of her blue RARE status, she's easily acquired from a map drop. There's better options like PR ships. But PR ships is hard to get.

Portland is the best heavy cruser for me, using her since commander lvl 10 and weird thing is that i don't like Roon at all, of all my CA she's the weakest or maybe i'm doing something really wrong with her equip
I do this to account for those looking into whether it's worth putting the resources (chips and gold) to go from 100 to 120. Some characters definitely do need that jump, whereas others may not be as vital This accounts for two groups, those who have built up the chips, but not the gold to invest in it...and those that are newer players looking into starting this portion of AL grinds.
