My thoughts on Primers. Do you need to use them? Should you use them? Which ones are the best?

I can’t imagine not using primer. Thanks for tips.

I’m a primer guy myself. It makes the paint stick better and without it, it builds up darker on the edges. Each is to there own but I recommend it 👍 great video bud👍

I’ve been building most of the past 40 years and I’ve tried every way of painting and I’d say primer is absolutely necessary if you want a quality paint job.

Good tips. I also use a filter, metal or paper when putting into airbrush cup or shot glass before putting into the airbrush cup....

Excellent video! So many new products for us old guys that have been out of modeling for a long time. I discovered Stynylrez and love it. This is a great video and if I had found it when I was starting back into the hobby, I would have found Stynylrez much sooner.

YES, this video helped me out quite a bit! Thanks Craig! Just started using the "REZ" primer, only have one airbrush with a .05 needle & it was bent. So I thinned a batch with my acrylic thinner which made it too thin. So adding just a drop of the glycerin sounds like the ticket! Thanks for the tip. Also a .03 tip works fine just open up the pattern a little bit more than normal.

Good video. I use a primer for everything. I think my work speaks for itself. Will Pattison has an awesome video called a primer on primer. It's an hour long of him just discussing everything about them why you should use them, what all they should do, what you should look for from one... A lot of his old videos are long and drawn out but they are so informative.

On car models, I always use primer. On aircraft models, sometimes I use them, but usually not. I never use primers with ship and military vehicle kits. Basically if the color will be gloss, yes. For a flat finish, usually not. Been working for me for over fifty years of modeling. I use Tamiya and Duplicolor primers. The Duplicolor does go on a bit heavy. I've had trouble with Rustoleum primer, seems to react badly under Tamiya paint.

Nice and informative video. I use mostly craft paints myself and think primer is very helpful for adhesion to plastic models. I use a lot of Rust-Oleum automotive primer with very good results. I have recently started using the Stynlrez primer and like it very much. I have used Krylon automotive primer with very good results, but it is hard to find in my area. I also like the Tamiya & Mr Surfacer primers very much. .

For the small cans of spray paint I use Krylon Short Cuts from Hobby Lobby and the big cans of rust oleum and it depends on what color you use for primer it will make you top coat light or dark. 🐎Mr. ED Says Just Have Fun Modeling

i began building kits almost 60 years ago, and I've not once ever used primer. I used rattle cans, or brushed on paint. Those kits are all still on display in the house I grew up in, the paint might be bit dusty but it's otherwise just the same as it was the day I painted them. This primer thing doesn't seem to be necessary from my perspective. However, I've not used air-brushes yet, so the paint layer may be thinner than what I did back then. I've bought an air-brush, and have accumulated a lot of kits to build. I'll put that to a test soon enough. Primer isn't really for bonding paint, it's for rust blocking. Plastic kits don't rust. 😉 (I worked at a Big 3 company for 30 years, so I've not had much time to build kits for a long time.)

Great discussion. I personally use the Mr Hobby primers. I find them easy to get at H.L. I dont know if you mentioned that Model Master brand isn't available anymore. Hopefully nobody goes looking for it. Anyways Thanks for sharing.

Im a primer guy myself. Which primers do you recommend using if youre gonna spray tamiya over it? Ive been using dulpicolor, but its gotten little to pricey for me. I had bad luck with the Rust-Oleum 2x primers. Someone once recommend automotive primers once and i havent had the opportunity to get any yet

You should be able to spray Tamiya paints over pretty much any brand of primer, except maybe the enamels. I've used Rustoleum, Brite Touch, Tamiya, Testors, Touch n Tone and Stynylrez under Tamiya spray paints with no issues.

@@StumpyGrumpsScaleSpeedShop thank you!! I'm always nervous about mixing brands and the dulpicolor primer seems to work with everything

Grear video, do you use stynelrez with createx paints or use autoborne

I pretty much use Stynylrez exclusively anymore, so yes I do use it with Createx paints. Stynylrez is compatible with pretty much any kind of paint.
