Starting with recasts led me to eventually buy real ones, otherwise I'd never have

This is the best recast talk from a pro-artist that I've ever seen. You came from a place of love, and not ego. There should be more people like you in this hobby. I personally believe do what you will, I simply cannot hate someone over an object...Thanks so much for sharing ❤

A zero tolerance for recast DOLLS is SO much more acceptable than a zero tolerance for recast OWNERS.. There are a LOT of good people who own recast dolls. I have a LOT of friends on BOTH sides of the fence. As in life. You spoke from a place of consideration and I personally heard every word you said and I didnt find it offensive at all. There was no pointing a finger at them or degrading them. So much more acceptable . There will ALWAYS be differences in beliefs , standards , morals etc in general not just in this hobby. And while everybody has a right to their opinions when it it said in a hurtful way it bothers me. I feel that people tend to stop listening anyway when they or their friends are hurt or insulted . I think you spoke very well and stood in your own truth which is always the way it should be. Hugzzzzz

I think you did a great job explaining your thoughts on recasts. And I'm glad you mentioned that you had filmed a video when you were angry but didn't post it. We all get angry and rant and say things harsher than we really feel, but it's taking that step away before you post something to the internet that shows maturity. It's not an easy thing to talk about and not hurt anyone's feeling. Hopefully people will see that your intentions were just to share your feelings and not to preach at others.

People who bully other people for what they buy or own is really ridiculously childish. Your father taught you well, but schools taught you nothing and soon your maker will be taking you to the next level. Pro artist, neutral or pro recast supporters makes no difference, because they are just supporting BJDs in different ways. An artist only have to sculpt the prototype doll with clay or with whatever material, cast them in a mould and reproduce it a many times for sale. Casting the dolls in moulds & reproducing for sale by artists is called recast, whether legitimate or not. Even if you buy a legitimate doll with a certificate, it is still a recasted doll from & by someone. It is not the the original prototype, handmade & sculpted doll. Prices of legitimate recasted dolls are so expensive while the casting materials used to cast legitimate dolls are so affordable for the artists. The artists can make 3 to 10 times the amount of money from their recasted dolls every time they reproduce it from the molds for sale instead of sculpting & painting every single piece of doll by hand, because it is very tedious & time consuming. People who are against recast should petition to ban the production of all casting materials. That will end this stupid argument!
@hobbiesstuff9850
@hobbiesstuff9850 4 года назад
Yes! I agree with how you explained this. Any reproduction of the doll is a recast from the original sculpt. Calling the doll a recast is not the right way to distinguish between legitimate an illegitimate status. I think a better word would be illegal copy or illegal recast. As you said, except for the original prototype doll, all of them are recasts. I've been trying to think of a way to explain that and you just explained it better than I could have ever thought of. 👏👏👏

I do own one Recast Doll, but I don't support Recasts. If people want to buy them for the reasons you mentioned I perfectly agree. I bought her to see if I like BJDs enough to buy a legit. I found that I did and now own three legit girls! :) In fact there are two more I planned to get from a company called Aimerai. I own one and if they left I would be very sad. I heard that Dream of Doll left too and that is heartbreaking because their dolls are beautiful.

This is a far better way to get your point across, than a recent video I watched (that they took down and re done) You aren’t demonising recast owners, you’re talking from the heart and explaining why it matters to you. No aggression or a bullying undertone. I agree with you 💯 and I think you put it beautifully. All people matter, I don’t know why people choose recast, that’s their own choice and they obviously have reasons. Doesn’t make them a bad person, they’re just making a bad choice. Videos like yours can help people go legit, whereas the recent one I watched just caused anger and disgust in some. It felt very aggressive, you don’t change people’s minds with abusive words, you change people’s mind with discussion and some feelings. Well done 👌🏻

The constant witch hunts, DOA drama, and just the attitude in general of the hobby has really soured me on it. I will love my fashion dolls and my hinge jointed ladies, and let my BJD sit on her shelf. She's legit, a beautiful SD by Mystic Kids, but the idea of having to defend her constantly and always remember to bring her COA or box or whatever gives me an honest anxiety attack. Especially since I'd forget my legs if I did have them attached to my hips! 😂

I'll admit I bought a recast doll knowingly it seemed like alot of money at the start but after spending time with my recast I'm really seeing why they are so valuable they are more than just a doll or toy to me in so many ways and so I'm determined to only buy legitimate dolls from now on although I won't ever get rid of my recast

I'm so so happy that you approached this topic on such a calm and deep level. I recently bought a doll second hand that I was told was the real deal and I just found out today that he in fact is a recast and a bad one at that. Your video touches on the subject perfectly and your still understanding of people who do buy them but I personally can't deal with the guilt of having a doll that steals from the artist. I'm an artist myself and I know how much blood sweat and tears goes into the process snd the love too and to just have that taken away makes my heart break. I'm not Anti recast owners but if you purposefully recast dolls you can get out of my face..

I think you might be the most rational, sincere, most non-judgmental person that I have heard speak on this subject. I love how you kept reiterating you were against the production of illegal copies and not the people who own them. Bullying, shaming, and belittling won't ever accomplish anything. As a matter of fact, it inhibits growth for both the person receiving the bullying and the person delivering the bullying behavior. It's just not productive. Great video! 👍

I think those are all valid reasons of why people would decide to purchase a recast over a legit doll, and I am also pro-artist, but on the other hand I really appreciate the fact that there ARE ways to make legit resin ball jointed dolls that don't cost over $700 and take a year to wait for. Its all left up to the doll owner (or potential doll owner) to find the best and affordable option to them. My first BJD was an MYOU Doll and their work is under $260 USD for 1/4 size. There are affordable option out there, its just harder to find them. I really hope in the future that more legit companies open that offer dolls in lower price ranges. It all really comes down to the price for people, and MYOU and other companies have proven that they can be made at lower prices. Great video and I think you explained your thoughts and feelings very well.

I bought my first bjd years ago on eBay... I think it is a fake or recast. Either way I love him. I bought another one from a different seller and the 2nd is 100% a fake. I bought her knowing she was a fake to compare to my other one. Both are 1/12 pukipuki. I just bought my first 100% real bjd today from sio2 on etsy. (I also own 2 mmds and 2 smartdolls, technically not bjds but some people count them as bjds.) Even though my first 2 bjds are recast or fakes I still love them and now I am going to try to get legit bjds only. I totally understand your feelings and found your video very educational.

Was sad when Dream of Doll just went dark and then went away. They were also effected with some of there sculpts by reacts so makes me wonder if that is a reason they ended up just closing down.(I don't think they ever officially closed they just one day took down there website and never came back years later.) What I dislike the most is that some recast companies like to pretend they are the real thing when they are not. I personally would never willingly by a recast. I will just leave it at that.

D.O.D Homme Ducan was one of my first introductions to BJD's. Little Monica Kliff too. I always wanted a Ducan, a legit one, and I finally have a legit LM Kliff head, just before LM closed down (Which, btw, they are now back, yay!!) I agree with what you said. It isn't about the recast owners, really, it is about the recasters. If you go after the owners, it just causes a lot of negativity in the hobby, it creates a lot of toxicity. A little bit of kindness to people will make the hobby more easy for newcomers to get into BJDs, and will make the old BJD hobbyists, like I am, to want to stay more. It isn't about hurting people in this hobby, it is about giving people the knowledge, and while recasts are more immoral, maybe amoral for someone to buy, it is not about hating on people for their choices, it is about respecting the person. Hate the recasts, but not the person. Be kind to the person. Never hate the person for having recasts. Just.. respect in the hobby is needed for everyone. I am pro artist, but I also call myself, anti hate, so while I would not own a recast, I respect others and so I will respect them as human beings, regardless of what dolls they have or do not have. I feel there is so much negativity towards the owners of recasts, but that hate should be for the recasters and recasts, not the owners of recasts. The owners of recasts can still be good people. Some don't even know what a recast is, so have one unknowingly, others do choose to buy recasts knowingly, and while that is perpetuating the business of recasters, common decency should be applied to every person, regardless of if they have recasts, are pro recast, or are pro artist, owners of legit dolls only. It is about respect and common decency for the person you are interacting with. I always say, it isn't that respect is earned, it is that respect is given, if someone does something to really hurt you or another, like, a legit reason to revoke respect, then that respect can be revoked, depending on if you wish it to be, but respect is ALWAY given first. You don't bully and hate recast owners because they have recasts, now, THAT, is immoral. There is no excuse to bully and hate on another. NO. EXCUSE.

I agree and share your thoughts 100%. But to be fair we need to understand that not every recast owner owns the recast out of their own choice, really. Some people get dolls as a gift from friends or family, and you have to keep in mind that often times these are people that have zero knowledge about these dolls and just want to make the person happy with no ill will. I don't own any recasts myself, but if I suddenly was gifted one like that I would most likely hold on to it because I am such a sentimental type of person. I would love the doll because it was gifted to me and for the emotional value it has. I know this is the case for a lot of recast owners too. Sometimes it's really not by their own choice, and we cannot blame them for wanting to hold on to a gift that probably has a lot of emotional value for them. I wanted to share this side of the hobby as well. We should not judge recast owners without knowing the full story! :)

I agree, the artists that make ball jointed dolls are extremely small and usually just a handful of people. When people buy recasts of the artists dolls, it puts the original artist out of buisness. Because buying recasts only enforces the trade. Aka buying exotic pets only enforces the illegal pet trade. But at the same time ball jointed dolls are a luxury item because it is custom made and sculpted. And it is theft when you recast

If the doll is retired or sold out, how does that affect the artist? The artist CHOSE to stop selling that doll. It is they that gave up the copyright when they stopped making the doll with no intention of re-producing them. Its actually copyright law, you have to renew or lose it. The Creator of Raggedy Ann books and dolls lost a copyright case back in the 1930s because he stopped producing dolls after awhile. He lost millions but it was his own fault.

I just got a recast, I actually did think it was a original doll. But it turnes out it is a recast. does that make me a thief? NO Is it now okay to bully me? NO It is the company that makes the recast, go scream at those companys! And if you see one there got a recast, then please try to help with links for real dolls, NICLY tell them that the dolls from thees pages are 100 % legit, and so on... instead of bullying people, I put my unboxin video op a week ago, and within 5 min, I had the first "pre-written" like message, telling me it was a recast, and I should not get tem. I was like, waith what... Now I have been looking into recasts, and so.... And I came to one conclusion, I will never support recasts on purpos, as a artist my self I know how wrong that is. But the only thing I learned, from the way people are bullying people that got a recast, is that I will never ever get another BJD at all, I would be scared to get a wrong one again, and I will tell my friends not to get a BJD as the risk getting a recast, and being bullyed cause of it. I do believe that isn't what ProBJD collectors want eighter - so why not try to entlighten newbies in a nice tone, in a nice way... And I still love the girl I got recast or not, she is gorgerouse

There is a degree of classism in the hobby unfortunately and one way to combat that on the ground level is by promoting more inexpensive options for new collectors. This can also help take a bite out of the re-cast market. There are TONS of beautiful legit bjds that are inexpensive but almost no one talks about. It's extraordinary that this hobby is so cost prohibitive and so few people talk positively about brands and creators who are a little less pricey. The economy in the west is tanking, the housing market is in turmoil, and we're having our bodily autonomy threatened. Life sucks. Let us be welcoming and supportive of those less financially able and make a way in this hobby for individuals to FEEL welcomed and valued!

And if you saw a doll that it says its a second hand bjd, you should check all the details. A legit bjd usually have a brand mark on the back of the head or inside the head and look for the COA(the certificate). Anyway if you really want to buy a legit bjd you should do your own research so you wont get scammed.

Your perspective is definitely most similar to mine. I saw someone make a point I rather didn't like on another video, it didn't sit well with me... They said claiming BJD collecting was a luxury hobby was classist?! I literally make barely above minimum wage, been just above the poverty line my whole life, but that doesn't stop me from being pro-artist and simply buying secondhand when I am so fortunate to find a doll I've been seeking. Don't get me wrong, I understand simply just not being able to afford expensive dolls, but making that sort of argument is nonsensical to me. These are small businesses, usually independently owned, that need to make profits. They're kindly sharing their creativity with the world, which is indeed a PRIVILEGE we get to experience and should pay for accordingly... It is not classist, it's the truth. Save your money if you can, ask for layaways, get involved. There are alternatives. If you own a recast, it doesn't make you a bad person, but please be aware there are other methods if you care about supporting the original artist!

These legit companies are not at the level to which they charge for their dolls. I contacted them several times to get shipping times and they said 7-8 months not including shipping, huge problem, why would I pay an arm and a leg for a doll and wait so long. Another company ignored me and another responded much later and said I will contact manager, no response after that. For what people pay they should have more than a handful of people. They need to step up their customer service skills and production. Production of these dolls is ridiculous, especially with so much modern technology in the world. The pro artist are more like pro elitists. Also, quality isn't that great on legit dolls as other videos have demonstrated, for the price that is disgraceful, especially when the recasts are better at times.
@AmazonRiderNeoLove

But, these dolls are fully hand made, the clothes, done by hand, the faceup which is painted on by hand, the sculpting, done by hand, the mixing of the resin, done by hand, the pouring of the resin into the silicone molds, done by hand, the body blushing, done by hand, the wigs, the eyes, sanding down the pieces after casting them, stringing them, packaging them ready to go to their owners, it is all done by people, hand made, done by hand. That is why it takes so long. I saw a good documentary video on youtube, it was about Ringdoll. The owner and sculptor of Ringdoll BJDs got asked once, why not use a 3D printer to produce the dolls, instead of by hand. He said, the creating of dolls by hand is like a ceremony to give the dolls life. It is also a process to demonstrate his art style. He wants to create BJD's in his own style and by his own hands. I feel, a real artist with a penchant for creating art in their own way, would say that. You don't rush art. I feel, that is what a lot of BJD companies may just feel like, which is why they create using their hands, instead of using machines. Everything about BJDs are hand made, created with intense care and dedication. These companies are very small, some are only one person involved, some may be 3, or 5, other bigger companies may be 10-15 people. The process of making these things takes a long time due to the way in which they are created, and the amount of people working in the companies, and BJDs are niche, they are all hand made, no machines, so it does take a long time, it is a long process to make even just one of these dolls. I don't know about them not contacting you, maybe it was communication problems, with different languages, but if not, I don't know why, so I can't say. I will try to link the documentary I saw on Ringdoll. I hope this works... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fkwF-2-TRw0.html EDIT: I just want to say, this hobby is about, in my opinion, art. Artists creating art. I feel, that is why these companies continue to create using their hands. It is wrong to use machines to create dolls when they can do it by their hands, using their hands to create art in the form of dolls, gives a feel of dedication, love, and a lot of time put into creating the dolls. It is a labour of love. A lot of BJD companies, if not all of them, do not get a lot of money from the dolls they make, it is fully a labour of love to them, I feel. In the Ringdoll documentary, the sculptor of the dolls, who is also the owner of Ringdoll, said, he will continue doing the right thing, to him, sculpting and creating dolls by hand is the right thing. Not mass producing without any soul put into the dolls. These dolls are niche, like I stated, small companies who create the dolls for the love of the dolls. It isn't a money maker, but it is something they love doing. Mass producing dolls with machines takes the soul and love and art out of the making of these dolls. BJDs, even the company Volks, aren't like huge companies we see, who churns out dolls for profit only, like a money maker cash cow. These BJD makers are small companies who hand make dolls with the dedication and love for making them. Everything is slow to be made because it is all done by hand. But, the quality of these dolls are astounding, due to being hand made with a lot of time, love and dedication put into them.

How does the making of a recast when the doll is sold out/ no longer in production hurt the artist or company? If I own a legit doll and and resell it the company makes no money! You say that even a sold out doll recast hurts the company. HOW? If the company wanted to make more money they could continue to sell the original doll, but they choose to retire them. Now if the recast maker trys to sell the doll as legit, that's wrong, but they don't. Only the doll is similar. The box and papers are not copies to fool, and if the doll is sold as original, asking top dollar, as a buyer I would want proof. We are not talking about Chinese copies of Fender or Gibson guitars with phoney logos and serial numbers. Only an idiot would confuse a legit doll with a recast, and not ask the seller for papers. On the other hand, cheap dolls make the hobby more affordable so if the Japanese or Korean artists want to stay competitive they should price accordingly. Also, a person who can't afford the original is not going to buy it anyway. What the legit artists should really worry about is when the Chinese start making their own molds and sell the dolls for a fair price. Then you elitists will have nothing more to say.

@japonaliya
@japonaliya 3 года назад
@@slashbat2375 but they don't. I have never seen a recast of a still in production doll. Even if they did, the people who buy recasts do so because either they can't afford, or don't wish (in my case) to pay mega bucks for a plastic doll. So the artist looses nothing because recast buyers are not the artist's clientele. I actually think even recasts at around $100.-$200. are over priced. It's only the faceups that can be gorgeous. The dolls themselves are just plastic resin cast pieces without much detail and God awful floppy. Most of the wigs suck with fly away hair that can drive you crazy. A lot of dolls are really nice but are WAY overpriced like modern designer dolls such as Dianna Effner "Little Darlings" or Zwergnase dolls and a whole bunch of others. Gorgeous or quirky, they range from $300. to over $1000. For vinyl dolls! I started collecting antique Japanese and French & German 19th c bisque dolls. Except for the very rarest sought after, you can buy a descent doll for $250.- $1500. but there is a lot of history in those dolls as well as being fine art. I don't think bjd will ever be that except for the one-offs made by famous doll makers like Koitsukihime and the like.

I don't really understand why bjd community is so toxic (not you, of course, and no one other, but community as the fact). Not once and not twice I saw absolutely gorgeous, stunning, beautiful bjd dolls/dresses/wigs, but in comment section everyone told: "It's recast!!!" and naturally bullied owner of this. I was... Ok, I was pretty new in community and just fell in love with almost every doll and didn't care about original it or recast. I saw only quality of doll/outfit and was impressed. So this hate for PERSON only because he/she bought recast, even if doll is gorgeous and seems better than original... I was so upset and shocked. Even now, when I understand why people don't like recasts, I can't understand why people are hate OWNERS of recasts. It's strange. Some of these guys who buy recasts even don't know about bjd, companies and other stuff. They just saw doll, fell in love, bought and wanted to show their doll to the world. Is it bad? I don't think so. Some of recast's owners are just haven't enough money to buy the original. Some people just don't really need documents, they're don't need toxic community and just wanted doll. Is it bad? Still no. By the way, not every original doll means quality! Now I broke someone's heart, but it's true. I saw a video from one girl, she bought an Original doll. Limited edition. It costed about 1000$. Fantasy doll with horns, tail, wings and animal legs. So... The painting of legs was terrible. Wig wasn't like on photo. She had other eyes! It was a demon's eyes on promo, but doll that costed more than 1000$ had absolutely ordinary eyes! I was in shock. And I didnt say theat wings (that also painted terrible) didn't hold on. 1000$. Just stay with it. And it was original! When I heared about it I decided to buy a recast from Aliexpress. Seller was so nice and even for 80$ I got a perfect doll like on the picture. Same with picture. I was in heaven, really. Bjd was my dream and finally I got it. I didn't care it's recast because my boy was better than I even expected, so why I should feel wrong? I even can't find an original doll on internet, so how can I feel sorry for author? Really, my seller was as nice as it possible. He sent me picture of doll to say is makeup right. He asked me about skin colour and eye colour, gave me a chance to choose one that I prefer (there was about 12 positions). I bought a head from one doll, body from other and costume from third. And it all costed about 10$. For 90$ I got a doll from my dreams and was absolutely sure that it's what I want. Just show me an original company that will talk with you about all nuances! My friend had buy an original doll. I'll not say what company it was, but they even didn't ask her about makeup before shipping. This doll arrived half year(!) later and all this time my fried had worry about her girl's face. Everything was right, but how is it possible?! This doll was madly expensive, how they didn't talk about nuances? And I had compare my recast and original. I didn't see pretty much difference. Of course, body and face was other, but it's absolutely another doll, you know. Detalisation was almost the same, but my doll is 1/6 anime styled and her is 1/6 realistic styled so I don't think that it will be fair to compare them. Resin was identical, I like my doll's resin even more because it's matte and original shiny like a barbie plastic... I still don't understand why she paid so much money for it. Original doll of course should be more expensive because of sculptor's job and company's name, but I like recast seller's approach to clients more. It's just my opinion. I understand original dolls lovers, maybe I will even buy one original in future, but it will be from one author from Instagram that I really love and I just can't buy recast because of respect. Her dolls are really individual and one of a kind. I can pay for it. But why I should pay to original company (not the author of doll, but also recast if be honest, just from orifinal company with documents) that too(!) makes so many same (not only one or 150 per world) dolls? I don't know. I'd better buy a patreon's subscribe of bjd sculptors that I love Sorry for this huge text but I really don't understand why community talks about recasts only in one bad case. Also I wanted to say sorry for my pure English, I tried to write as right as I can but it's still so bad. Really, sorry

I don't understand how people making the original molds don't have rights over their work? They can take the responsibility to take back their work
