It's pretty good on PC, but where a little spoiled on PC. On console this is God tier. Nothing like kicking back in a comfortable chair in the living room, lights off on a 4k TV. Makes younger me very happy.
That's very true, and seeing it from that perspective makes me appreciate the re-release even more. I've tried to use my steam deck as a streaming Bluetooth controller but haven't gotten it to work yet. I've been wanting to play doom on the couch haha
im just happy being able to play brutal doom, on console my pc shit the bed,and agreed had no idea this came out 13 days ago,i was like what, and i have all the bommer shooters, installed on my console, doom, wolf, dume, quake, so im like ill just boot up doom, but its a seperate download, free yes but separate anyway deleated the 2 games, and just downloaded, this, better file compression and funney has all the add ons of the 2020 release versions, and a shit ton more so very happy with thus as my pc is out of commission, surge protector didn't work over the summer and of course surge fried the majority of the components could smell burnt plastic and everything anyway even the power supply is cooked motherboard ECT so sad times at this point may as well just buy a new pc,still hauving this on console is very appreciated and its pretty awesome like the quake remasters, the vault with all of the concept art sprites ect is just a gem and allot of devs nned to take notes on remasters, its like nah nah this, this is a remaster! not this garbage, with a barely noticable fresh coat if paint
Agree the mod browser is terrible. It's full of stuff that doesn't work in in this version, stuff with no/bad descriptions & duplicates & everything about it makes it difficult to find specific entries. It also makes it complicated to try to play a mod that isn't in the browser, which is probably why a lot of people are uploading stuff like My House.was that doesn't work.
Yeah! The mod browser needs a complete rework. And the duplicates need to be trimmed off. And absolutely, there should be better descriptions and more than just two screenshots. Some even just have the screenshot of the name twice. Very unfortunate, I hope they keep fixing it.
Knowing night dive there’s likely an update on their games. Quake remastered is a great example. I’ve talked to the devs and they mentions they’re working on a patch to rebalanced and overhaul some things with the considered feed back.
@olivierpayette4284 yeah I just checked out the steam ver, while the volume for the Original Music is slightly lower then the other music options, is bearable. On ps5 and series X you can barely hear the Original Music... it's ridiculous.
Funny story, I was playing the dos versions of doom, and I noticed the steam background had changed, and later the name had changed, and when I quite and relaunched the game it was this it literally came out of nowhere, then they brought out the trailer on RU-vid. But overall I really love this port, and for me it's replaced source ports, because I don't play many mods, but this re-release runs and looks really great, and runs better than the unity port 😊 The mod browser is really messy though, and there are no filters, people upload mods that don't work, no search function, I've seen like 15 My House.wads on the browser lol.
Yeah and all the my house wads don't work or the 4 brutal dooms. Very annoying. As for me, this re-release has also replaced source ports. At least for now. As bad as the mod browser is, it's still pretty convenient haha
After recently playing the Doom 2 Ray tracing mod it made me realize being able to mouse look up & down adds a lot to the gameplay experience, I'm surprised they didn't include this as an option in the Doom re-release.
Yeah a lot of people are wanting them to add it in. Should be possible considering it's boom compatible. I don't care for mouse look, but it's always best to have the option
@@BunnyBun2000 I have a PC, but I prefer console. I can't believe I never thought of looking for Doom mods for PC before. I didn't realize how good they were. I'm such a silly billy.
Good to see you again. I haven't spent much time with the new release. I played the first two levels in Legacy of Rust and I was a bit underwhelmed. I'm mostly excited about the third party content page and the multiplayer. The "wild west" feeling of the third party uploads reminds me of my Warcraft 3 days (in a good way). I understand why people wouldn't like that very much. The lack of multiplayer support for third party content definitely strikes me as odd. Overall though, I'm hopeful for this release and I think it's a welcome addition for Doom.
Good to see you as well! Sorta made this video on a whim and winged it haha. Leave it to me to ramble about Doom for 40 minutes. Yeah the browser is pretty wild west, we need a sheriff in town to control it. It's maybe not definitive just yet, but I've only been playing it instead of my source port haha. But when I make videos I'll probably still make them with gzdoom or dsda doon
Part of the warping effect is likely due to your FOV setting. I think it defaults to 80 so you might see if it still does it at that setting? My other issue you touched on in that it does feature Midi Synth, I would have preferred if it actually allowed me to switch to my USB to MIDI adapter that I use when playing Doom. That way I can change out to different synths from game to game. The one they have is pretty close to the original SC-55 module that it was designed with back in the day, but still has some subtle differences. The OPL options for FM I really can't listen to anymore after hearing it with proper synth/wave table modules.
Ah yeah, maybe I can try. But I don't think fov should drastically stretch the skybox like that, even in dsda doom it doesn't do that. Hopefully they release some patches to make this port truly the definitive edition.
Seems to me that they’ve changed monster behaviour a bit. Playing through Doom 1 and 2, which I know off by heart, and sometimes they don’t “follow the script” at all. It’s almost as if they have some form of AI. Most obvious in more open maps. Compare Mt Erebus and you’ll see what I mean. Oh, and excellent channel dude. Low production values can either mean charm or low effort. It’s the former in this case. Fantastic potential. If I had any feedback I’d say that I love the off-the-cuff feel but I think it could be slightly more organised. Pseudo-scripted. Subbed, and feedback given in good faith.
Haha thanks a bunch! Yeah I totally can see how it felt unorganized. I basically just did it all in one take while making sure I chatted about every topic I had on a list nearby. Maybe that's why it ended up being nearly 40minutes. Thank you for the feedback! As for the monster behavior, yeah I see it. That and monsters so frequently jump off ledges now...like that ruins some map designs!
@@BunnyBun2000 Re the depression stuff, man I feel you, trust me. Doom has often been my comfy castle during times of strife. When in doubt, Doom. I love Doom maybe as much as you do, and one of the reasons I do is that it's a fantastic metaphor for me - fight your demons and crush them. Begin with a crappy pistol, end with a BFG while standing over the mother of all demons. Doomguy was and is a representation of YOU. I'm interested in your thoughts on the Doom II Hulshult OST btw. It's clearly been influenced by argent metal. Personally, I love it as a nice change of pace but like you said regarding more generally, I prefer the midis most of the time.
@@BunnyBun2000 My one MAJOR problem with this port from a PC perspective is how limited the keybindings are. I can't set a separate key for fists or SSG to split up those weapon slots, for example. If I wanted to play with a keyboard only, that's not happening either.
Well it is to my understanding a complete remaster into the Kex engine, so I guess it wouldn't be shocking that it or they might change some things when they completely change engines.
@@lutherheggs451 The Kex engine is not an engine in the traditional sense. It is a wrapper for older engines. It still runs id Tech 1, although they've multithreaded it.
Save file management has always been a glaring issue with ND/KEX games. Man, just check out Doom 64! Though, to be fair, Quake 2 isn't bad (but you still can't rename them. So, I don't see that changing any time soon. One thing the re-re-release is lacking for me is a 'Vanilla' option. There's currently no way to play the game at 320x200, 35 FPS. For the sake of game preservation that should be a given.
That's a massive oversight, I didn't even think about that. A Hearing that the Quake 2 didn't get fixes, that worries me about all these issues persisting : (
Shame about the background warping and the mod browser. Thought I might pick it up, but I'm an oldhead with the OG discs playing source ports since ever. Maybe I'll pick it up if those issues are fixed, though if any of my friends are interested I'd probably recommend this version. Was a lil' hype seeing "Lost Levels of DOOM" in the browser for a bit of nostalgia, but I'm sure I can find that elsewhere or worst case dig the disc out of a box somewhere lol. Thanks for the thorough review!
Have this on PS5 and Switch. Love the fullscreen-splitscreen on both. Music seems WAY too quiet though compared to what I remember it being like as a kid. Also sometimes if too many sounds happen at once it'll muffle/mute others, commonly with the SSG with multikills for example. So, sound quality is wonky in a couple regards but otherwise I love it.
It’s pretty badass. gives you mod support though the mod page is a… little funky. Though I haven’t really completed the legacy of rust expansion as of yet. And I do personally think that the mod page should get a search bar, since it’s getting a little too fat with mods (up to 66 pages of mods last time I checked). I also like that you can change the musics options, the Mugshot bar, and etc.
I actually have this on switch as a free download. Considering I got the 2019 releases for like 2 bucks each on sale this for me was totallyworth it. I only have one complaint. On consols the 2019 versions were easy to get to cheats as it was in the menu. With enhanced edition you have to use a keyboard which is a huge hassel. Please Nightdive add the cheats back to the menu.
Been playing on ps4…I can’t believe for the last week I’ve been playing sunlust…it blows my mind being able to play sunlust hell revealed skyfe 1 and 2 ect on a console…I’ve been wanting to play these wads for so many years and now I get to..its amazing and I absolutely love it !
@@BunnyBun2000 It also replaces all of the sounds (getting hit, searching for secrets etc), and also makes the fist punch a bit more slender/more feminine (I think?). Has a tan glove now and there is no hair on the arm which appears original and thinner to me. While in game, I haven't seen anything breaking immersion, but the main menu art etc is the same. I imagine the ending 'cutscenes' will be the same as well.
1:30 Me too! I had completely forgotten about QuakeCon, but then I saw a bunch of posts on X about Doom+Doom2 and thought, wtf what did I miss!? Anyway, great thoughts on this new release. Indeed, I don't think it will replace the source ports that are already available, but it's great for new players. Love that it supports all the way up to MBF21/ID24, GZDoom is just it's own separate thing, always has been.
Dude yes! That would be massive! I've seen so many people asking how to make their own levels. Then when they find out they need a PC and a 3rd party software that's relatively complicated, they say nevermind! Having an in-game level builder would be amazing. Maybe one day
@@BunnyBun2000 in all honesty if the official classic doom map editor would be a payed for DLC I would buy it. It shouldn't cost to much money maybe 2 or 3 dollars? Ideally it would be free.
Ideally free yes, but I've seen some games lock map editor behind a pay wall or a grind wall. Imagine having to beat enough doom levels to get enough profile/slayer levels to unlock the map maker feature. That would be a fun grind.
I already have my iwads and downloaded Legacy of Rust on a different website. I use Zandronum and Nugget Doom, so there's no need for me to buy Doom 1 + 2. I do think of getting it on console someday.
nightdive is broadly really good at getting their re-releases into a happy place before they move on entirely. That said, sometimes it's out of their hands, like in the instance of Blood: Fresh Supply and Atari taking away control after 1 update.
I couldnt load my saved games with mods activated (say Valiant for example) the game tells me the correct mods are not installed which in fact are 😂 You can still choose the level you left off and since i like to pistol start it doesnt bother me but it can bother someone else. Good analysis! I hope we can play custom map packs online and get that damn browser fixed 😅
what's wrong with playing chunky graphics and hearing 4K music? It's a common thing back in the 90's, even for Doom itself. Like Doom for Panasonic 3DO. Yes, the port is awful, but it still had the chunky graphics (and even chunkier than you see here) and awesome soundtrack played from CD
What? Legacy of Rust was absolutely excellent from beginning to end. There is no level that requires you to carry only the flame thrower. The weapon is very easy to use. My only issue is that it replaces the Plasma Rifle with the flame weapon. It's a cool weapon but it doesn't touch the Plasma Rifle. Addendum- I have this on the Series X, PS5, Steam Deck, and Switch. I played through it on my Series X. I wouldn't worry about Night Dive not touching it. Unlike the Unity port people really, really like this, and I believe the fans will take over.
Is this better than OG Doom running on a sound blaster with midi wavetable card and a voodoo gpu running DOS? I didn't like the unity port. I preferred my DOS machine with Doom of my retail CD ROM lol. Purist hahaahha. But this release looks not too bad
@@BunnyBun2000 It was nice easy listening haha. I haven't played this new release yet but I'm eager to get into it when I finish what I'm playing now. I've always been a casual doom player, I get to a point where I'm stuck in a maze and I drop it. I have never beaten it, but I'm ready to actually try now with this new release.
@@dkropelnicki9819 Im a pretty casual Doomer too. But if I ever drop a mapset/campaign I end up feeling guilty. so I try to finish all campaigns I start. Sometimes though I really can't be asked haha
I went back to Gzdoom on deck, I use zdl to use mods but just use gz doom for regular doom, I hate the hud in the new release on screen size 11, I like playing in fullscreen and seeing the full gun and hand on the shotgun, like with the hud off or gz dooms hud or pr booms low hud, But the re-release has the full screen hud in 4:3 and your armour covers half your gun, I wish it was just like gz doom where it’s on the very edges of the screen, And I’d like a option to turn the hud off, I can play a lot of doom with out a hud because of memory and not getting shot, And also doom mod websites filter whats good and you don’t get sent back to page one of the mods lol
I'm about to transfer back to gzdoom on the deck as well. But I wish it was easier to get mods for it. The rerelease at least has Bethesda support, so I can scroll on my phone and easily add new mods to my library and they'll be there when I jump on. I just don't like having to go to desktop mod and awkwardly drag around files on the deck
@@BunnyBun2000 oh yeah it is a bit of a process, but once you remember the location and how to use zdl it’s not too bad, that is nice though with the phone, And I don’t know if you noticed this but in gzdoom but the regular controller left joystick super is slow for some reason lol as in walk speed, at least for me, When I switch the left joy stick to a directional pad with wasd I move so much faster, And when I switch back to steams joystick I get so much less weapon sway and I’m slower and sprinting isn’t as fast, Super weird I dont know if it’s like that for you haha do you notice it with steams game pad with joystick trackpad layout?
@@MickeyP91 I just went to GZdoom to use the mods, but thanks for the response, by the way, do you know any mods I can use to make the game better looking?
Yeah :/ I hate to say this but it feels like this was rushed out the gate. Very unfortunate, I know a lot of achievement hunters have been deeply disappointed.
Legacy of Rust maps are very hit or miss, the new weapons are both amazing and terrible to use, map 6 is the worst thing to ever exist in a doom level needing long range combat while only providing flame thrower ammo
@@BunnyBun2000 Episode 2 is filled entirely with kinda mid maps, nothing really bad just kinda boring and a little confusing, oh and for some reason they REALLY liked placing revenants in tight corridors
Once you release a wad, it's not yours anymore. It's everyone's, to modify and do with it what you want. That's part of the license that you agree to when you mod Doom in the first place.
@@BunnyBun2000 Actually, I think it's completely bogus whenever I see someone ask not to use their wad as a base. It's like taking a penny from the dish at the store but never leaving one.
Unity Doom was already bad enough let alone the absolute trashpile that is the Kex engine. If this is how you play Doom you're seriously missing out. Just as with their release of ROTT Night Dive completely failed when it comes to the music options. Not including support for external midi devices such as Roland or Yamaha is MAJOR fail, especially when every other option for the OST sounds like total ass. Night Dive only cares about the peasant box ports of the classic PC games they "remaster" while just insulting fans that grew up with the original on PC.
@@gibberishdump1610 No. It's just another release of the same game. So you'd refer to it as 'This latest release of Doom', because that's how language works. It's not like a re-launch or a re-brand, where the original is invalidated or replaced. Games can have several iterations and versions whereas something like a brand is more singular. Or do you think Doom on the PS1 was a re-release, and Doom on the GBA was a re-release etc... This must be a re-re-re-re-re-release of Doom at least in your linguistic nightmare of a world...
@@xxnoxx-xp5bl Well at least for me, new release implies that the game is entirely new which its not. You do pose a good question on if a port of a game also counts as a re-release. But as it stands, I believe it is correct in saying that this is a re-release and not a new release.
@@UltraZelda64 I saw an interview with Carmack a while back where he explained that Doom didn't have vertical look because it would have been too computationally expensive to do the aspect correction to the textures. The original Duke3d is a great example of having vertical look with no y correction on the textures.
