I've been involved in kettlebell competition lifting since 2013 and I wanted to give you some of my thoughts on why I don't think it is as popular of a resistance training competition as I think it could be.
what can we do to increase it's draw?
would you like to do a kettlebell competition but are a little intimidated on how to start?
hit me up in the comments or at www.kbmuscle.com

Very few people have the accurate technical knowledge of kettlebell mechanics to even appreciate a kettlebell competition. A trainer might throw a kettlebell squat or swing into a routine, but finding athletes and coaches that extensively and accurately use kettlebells is very rare.

Yeah, gotta agree. It's so easy to underestimate kettlebells if you havent taken the time to understand the training modality. It's very different. You're also right that it's a different thing to watch, I enjoy watching KB sport lifters because I find the rhythm so hypnotic and relaxing. I love the sound of the clinking of the bells in the hike-pass of the swing and then hearing the handles clanking together in the rack before jerking is peak. I love it.

I almost died doing 10 min. long cycle with single 12kg kettlebell changing hands every 2 minutes. Nearly died! Watching the pros doing 32kg....is like watch God. You are right, that unless you trying and your body can feel what's going on it is a little boring. Like watching horse racing without placing a bet. You got to be invested in the sport, have a little skin in the game, to truly appreciate it. I agree they could add some shorter competitions that are sprints. I think this would maybe get people interest at a novice level.

More dynamic kettlebell movements should be used rather than stationary endurance moves. That's like watching someone run a marathon on a treadmill. No-one cares about that. Take inspiration from pentathlon. Halteres that resemble kettlebells in a way were used in Ancient Greece to aid in long jumps. I can think of kettlebell throws or farmer carry relays being in it too. The possibilities are endless. Just need movements that would embody the kettlebell sport's power endurance nature in a measurable way.

@@kettlebellmusclegainyes, I've tended to let the thumb point back at approx that angle, one famous KB sport guy ( Valerie ) goes thumb back and grips to front handle, and hints the all the best do this, then another goes thumb forward ( Denis ) and grips with pinkie on the back handle, I feel comfortable doing both, but that back handle grip seems to make readjusting thumb lock more comfortable. With doubles hardstyle, liking the thumb forward based off Neuperts take, whereas always did thumb back, for 'safety'. Guess you can overthink things, time to pick a method !

@kettlebellmusclegain Месяц назад
@cioran1754 I have worked in person with the Larry countless times probably 25 maybe 20 and I've worked online with Dennis for 6:00 to 9 months. As far as the thumb back for safety I think that is absolutely unbelievably not true Single arm bell does not require your body to not rotate with doubles you were forced to have all of that go into your shoulder on internal rotation so I don't think either it really matters for single bell It's when the double cleans happen with a thumb back I think it's awful

When I got into kettle bell I started with hard-style. After a while I wanted a new challenge and I wanted to up my endurance game, so I started practicing sport technique. And if I'm being totally honest, I thought watching KB Sport was boring until I started practicing it, even though I was already practicing hard-style. Someone else in the comments mentioned how KB sport is like watching someone run a marathon on a treadmill. Only endurance runners would enjoy watching it because they could understand whats actually going into it. They have their own technique that they are comparing to the athlete. A regular person, especially one that doesn't practice any type of KB is going to be so bored by watching KB competitions.

Yes HARDSTYLE can be a very simple base. Focused on tension and not much else. You're right as progression can involve technique as well as strength . Learning different ways to accomplish similar movements is amazing . Look at boxing..it's not all jabs. If HARDSTYLE is like sprinting , I like to compliment with trail running

uniform sized competition weights don't help . the first time you see one you either think it's heavier than it is or lighter than it is or that it's made of plastic . even people who train with iron bells don't understand them .

Are these competitions just not popular among spectators or are the competitions not popular to get competitors as well? I'd do a competition as a competitor but I still have to build up my strength and endurance since I'm self taught. I also think part of the problem is that high quality kettlebells are not common, ordering bells is very expensive, and it'll take time to build up. I would agree though that doing the same thing for ten minutes straight is boring and I'd rather work up to a kettlebell flow. If I improve over time, I'd definitely like to get into kettlebell juggling but I'd need to buy non-adjustable competition bells for that and hope to find a coach that'd help me keep my teeth while learning LOL.

I would have liked you to add a short clip of your competition effort. I understand that it requires so much discipline on the athlete but someone who doesnt lift (or snatch or clean and press) wouldnt appreciate the effort.

There's triathlon event supertri E or arena games triathlon, where the swimming is done in the pool, cycling is on stationary bike or on rollers and running happens on treadmill. They have the running and cycling competition happen on Zwift virtually. So even treadmill running can be made interesting with the help of computers 😄 Personally I do distance running and find it entertaining to watch group of people to run around a track for 10s to 30 minutes (100m to 10k), or in a city for two hours (marathon). Track&field has been losing spectators for years, and they say one reason is because they are unable to market the rivalries, drama and personalities of the sport. They've tried to change rules for some events, but that hasn't made much difference. Track&field events are incresingly more sports that people no longer do themselves. I see similarities to kettlebell sport competitions based on your description.

Most people seem to think kettlebell workouts are some sort of cult. I've found its hard to get people to take it seriously. It also takes a significant portion of your workout schedule to make real progress with kettlebells. I think most people can't really justify it being in their programming. But I also kind of like how kettlebell work is so niche. Like I'm getting an edge that other people just don't have.
