My Thyroid and Graves' Disease Story

When I was 14-years-old I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease (overactive thyroid / hyperthyroidism) and since then I’ve done it all - here's my journey including thyroid surgery and radioactive iodine treatment.
In December 2010 I had a subtotal thyroidectomy surgery and now in May 2022 I’ve had radioactive iodine treatment to try treat it once and for all!
I wanted to give a bit of an overview into my thyroid journey and also have a little message for anyone who has commented on my other videos about the lumps on my neck.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a medical professional and only speaking on my own experience. I cannot give advice and would urge anyone worries about any similar symptoms or considering thyroid treatment to speak to medical professional.

I’m actually crying because I am an influencer and I’ve been researching my options now that I’ve got swollen nodes as well. I found your video that way. I’ve been so discouraged from sharing current content being insecure about my goiter and I’ve also been prescribed anxiety meds after finding out. Your story I can relate to as it’s hereditary in my family as well. Thank you for sharing this! It’s beautiful how vulnerable you are. Really helps me with weighing my options since I’m recently diagnosed and frankly scared as can be lol. 🙏

I’m glad I was recommended this. My story started when I had to goto the emergency room for an unrelated issue. On the ekg they said I had tachycardia, after a ct scan, their writeup said I have a module on left thyroid, and referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist told me that tachycardia isn’t caused by the heart, it’s caused by something else physiologically. She ordered blood tests, which revealed very high t4, low tsh. My family doctor told me I have Graves’ disease without any tests done because I had all the symptoms, plus I’m really skinny, underweight for my height. He referred me onto an endocrinologist, who I had a video consult with today. After all the questions and answers she said that I most likely have Graves’ disease because my mother had it. I have to have a consultation at her practice to prepare for a biopsy of the nodule and put me on meds. I really dread the next years because I’ve read of so many stories of how bad it gets, after any treatment. Everything they offer to fix the thyroid is 70 year old technology. It hasn’t changed at all. So to me, it sounds archaic, all of it. This is why people have so many symptoms, there’s no fix to stop it all.

I was discovered to have graves disease while first pregnant and it was terrible. I was so scared. Thankfully my baby is okay but almost four years later and i'm still struggling. even after radioactive iodine. I really appreciate hearing your story. Sarah Thankyou for talking about your journey with thyroid problems. Please ignore any insensitive rude hurtful ignorant comments, I hadn’t noticed your neck at all. You are a very talented young lady. I also had radio iodine and had TED after this, I had no idea about TED, no one had told me it could happen. I spent a couple of yrs under a TED specialist and it’s settled down now. I am also coeliac. This happened also after my toxic thyroid & subsequent radio iodine treatment. I do wonder if thyroid disorders cause coeliac? Anyway, finding your Chanel has been a godsend. You are so very interesting and inspirational, your recipes and teaching is first class. Sending you very best wishes 💖💖💖

I hope you are able to hug your partner soon. You've been through a lot. Big love! 🤗❤️🤗

Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story, I found this by accident looking for a lazy platinum pud recipe! I also had overactive thyroid / Graves and radio iodine treatment around a decade ago, with a similar ups n downs, and menopause causing further confusion. 10 years on I just take thyroxin each morning and have my thyroid levels checked annually and don’t have to think about it too much, I just wanted to wish you all the best, you are at the uncertain bit at the moment but I am sure your body will find its equilibrium in time, take care.

This was so interesting, thank you for sharing! I was diagnosed with Graves at 17 with minor TED and a goitre too. After 5 years of on and off carbimazole with my thyroid always going back to overactive, my endocrinologist said we should look into something more long term. I went for the RAI in the end too and it was definitely a bit scary the thought of being radioactive and the isolating itself haha. It's been up and down since then, going on levothyroxine 5 months later after going underactive and feeling quite frankly AWFUL, but seems like my thyroid is balancing out naturally over time which (fingers crossed my next bloods confirm this) is here to stay! I was told a couple of years after being officially diagnosed with Graves that it's very likely I have celiac due to some blood tests I had, but haven't had a full investigation to confirm it. Do you mind me asking if this was confirmed by your doctor or at a hospital with biopsy etc.? They do say once you have one autoimmune disease that you're very likely to get another, so some of us are a little unlucky - thanks immune system... Anyway, stay strong, you've got this, Graves buddy! 💕
@GFBlogger
@GFBlogger 2 года назад
Yes they do seem to be a collection these autoimmune diseases! I had a blood test at the GP and then a biopsy at hospital to confirm coeliac - it’s important to make sure you’re eating gluten to get an accurate result but definitely worth it IMO. Glad the thyroid is settling down for you!! X

I am curious why RFA could not be used in this phase to "cook" thyroid tissue Also the cyst(unless it is misnamed) is containing fluid, so iodine will not work in this case. It works only on the well differentiated tissues that could uptake it. perhaps TC99 scan prior to the decision can be helpful.

Yes, I have it. For me it happens suddenly in my legs. I was in a grocery store doing my food shopping. After 20 minutes my legs felt wobbly, like rubber and I couldn’t walk properly. People were staring at me, I could barely walk. Some people asked me what’s going on, and I told them that my legs feel like rubber, and I needed to sit down. They said to leave the cart and each person held me under my arms and walked me to a bench outside. I wasn’t diagnosed at this time. They said I should go to the hospital. I refused and sat until I thought I could walk. I wobbled back to my car, and I couldn’t press the brake or accelerator. So I staid parked, put my chair back and laid down for hours until I felt I could drive. My arms get the same way after a shower. I’m exhausted after a shower, but my arms were so heavy and I couldn’t pick up my coffee cup. Rest seems to help, hours later. I was diagnosed with graves today.
