In this week’s episode, we chat about my experience with the new $6,000 Fuji GFX100s for landscape photography now that my time with it is ending. I'm super grateful to have even had the opportunity to test out this new camera for such an extended period of time (60 days). And the time has finally come that I need to make a decision as to either send back the GFX100s along with the GF lenses or just purchase the system outright. So whenever I'm faced with a larger buying decision I always create a pros & cons list to help me justify the purchase. See I suffer greatly from buyers remorse and I've found that creating a documented list of reasons usually helps ease this pain for me.
In this video, I'll walk you through the things I've really enjoyed about the new Medium Format Fuji GFX100s and the things that I wish were a bit different. Switching camera systems isn't a decision I take lightly and the pros & cons list in this video is the driving and deciding force behind the choice I made. I hope you enjoy this week's episode and are able to pick up at least one helpful piece of information that you can apply to your outdoor and landscape photography moving forward. Thanks for watching! - Mark D.

I beg to differ sir. I see no difference in pushing my files to the limit between 16 and 14 but files. By the time there is a difference you end up getting a ton of noise in the shadows so yeah not worth the file size. 14 is more than enough with a decent exposure.

I tend to shoot with the medium format for around two years now. My main camera is the Fujifilm GFX 50R. With my experience with MF, you will don’t need exposure brackets due to its high DR, but you will need to do a lot of focus bracketing because it's hard to get everything in focus especially if you have close foreground subjects

I never doubted for a second that you would keep the GFX-100S. It suits your style of landscape photography (in that you were already very deliberative and almost always use a tripod) and it fits your style of post-processing (in that you are a total pixel-peeper, even though you constantly deny it!) And while the XT-3 fits my style of photography and post-processing, I'll keep watching your videos to see where this medium format camera takes you.

A great decision Mark! I use a Canon 5DSR (50mp), I don't regret spending the $$ when I got it in 2016. The only thing I would move to now is the GFX100s if the bank account could take it, :( I did a trip to Lofoten in Feb 2020, captured some magnificent images there and the Quality of prints I can do is why I got a 50mp camera. Detail does matter when you want to print LARGE! Hope you have fin with the GFX and get some magnificent images. Cheers from Australia🇦🇺

One of the main reasons I moved to the Fuji system was to save weight, I have the xt2 and xt3 and very seldom do I need to bracket my images for landscapes. I would never want to go back to a much heavier system but hope you enjoy your new toy.

That's the reason why I moved to Olympus and m43 some years ago, and it's also the perfect companion with the GFX system. With adapters, I can use nearly all of my lenses on both systems, because I have still many of the best manual glasses from Nikon F and Olympus OM Zuiko, and many others. I also use OM-3Ti for 135 film, Mamiya 6MF for medium format film, and a rull range of 4X5" system. The GFX can be used as a digiback for that to. And by the way, I have those small Panasonic GM1 and GM5 cameras. Small enough to fit in a pocket, and can use the same lenses as GFX.

There is a 35mm crop mode in the shooting setting menu. But you must know it won't capture any data outside the frame in that mode. To get access to the other crop modes you have to shoot in jpg + raw. You will capture the entire sensor with those modes. You should also shoot in fine jpg plus raw to check critical focus. The embedded jpg in raw mode does not have enough resolution to check that focus. Hope that helps. The gfx system is the best out there.

On a side note, I also want a GFX100s, but I've got to say my #1 selling image of all time (Sold another large one over the weekend), was taken on the 6mp Nikon D70 shot in Jpeg. So resolution doesn't necessarily translate into sales. Just food for thought. My 26mp X-T3 is so far beyond that camera in every way, so the images are even better. I'm try to be content with what I have right now, because I've always just bought everything I want and it didn't help, haha.

For several years I photographed with a phase one medium format camera with their p30 + back. When Nikon came out with their high resolution bodies I jumped on it and sold my medium format. Like you I found the tonality of the medium format to be spectacular, but the system was too big to be a universal kit. A year or so back I got into the Fuji system, and love the retro look and functionality with the dials and such. I have a Nikon z7 (their glass is also spectacular) for my landscapes and use the Fuji for pretty much everything else. Don't see the need for jumping on another medium format at this point. Early in the pandemic I was hired by a client to photograph a panorama from his roof deck here in San Francisco that had a commanding view of the Bay. I used my Nikon and the manfrotto spherical head to put together a 14 image row stitched panorama that had more detail than anybody could ever wish for. That particular panorama head is a precision instrument and once it is set up and one becomes familiar with it you can move it quite fast between frames, with stitching software so sophisticated now any ghosting that might happen with movement is pretty much eliminated. Yes I am not photographing moving water with a ND filter but for everything else I don't see the need for dropping $20,000. Glad you can afford it. Great review I appreciate your time and putting it together.

On a side note, you’ve often mentioned how often you post on Instagram. I personally do not use the platform simply because of its clunky, haphazard constraints. It is a terrible media for DSLR photographers. So, you should do an entire video on your posting process. From taking the picture to final posting.

I personally feel there are two critical lenses missing from the system. A wide angle zoom and a small, light short tele (currently no teles lighter than 1kg!). That's a shame, because you can't replicate the two lens setup of 14-24/16-35 and 1.8/85 that a lot of photographers favour in 35mm, which really helps keep the bulk/weight down for hiking. Also, when I tried the 50R I thought the EVF was one of the worst I've ever used. Lots of flicker/shimmer and either way too dim on auto, or very thin and washed out with the manual brightness cranked. Tiny buttons/joystick really hindered handling with gloves on - inexplicably so on a relatively large camera. There's no arguing with the quality of the sensor and glass though. Both very impressive.

Hey Mark, great video as always. I also have purchased the GFX100s and will begin my journey documenting my landscape experiences on youtube soon! The GFX100s has a crop mode of 35mm format available which I believe is meant for full frame lens with adaptors to fit the GFX. However, if you turn this setting to on while using a GFX lens, it zooms in about 25% and you end up with a 61MP image. It's located in the Menu > Shooting Setting and scroll to page 2 and you should see second from the bottom "35mm FORMAT MODE".

I've got a GFX50R and my favourite things (aside from the fantastic IQ) are the 4:3 aspect ratio and the T setting giving shutter speeds up to 1 hour. I'm still undecided on the 100S. I've got one on order but am struggling to justify the expense. I don't need IBIS and I doubt I'd see any difference between 51 and 102 MP. Lens wise I use the 23, 32-64 and 100-200. They are simply fantastic. Given my time over again I'd probably switch out the 32-64 for the 45-100.

I come from the "electronic side", and can comment on this long exposure thing... It's dead easy to do it, simply from a settings viewpoint, but there are problems with - sensor noise - available power to keep shutter "mechanics" running - available power for image processing - camera heating - sensor heating - potential for sensor damage from sunlight And so on... It may well be doing a kind of "super-hdr", stacking up tens, or hundreds of exposures. Have you tried this feature, say, late evening? Cheers

Thank you Mike for your opinion and good luck with your new camera. About a year and a half ago I went from Canaan to Olympus OMD Mark ii then Mark iii just before Olympus sold its camera division.. Iwas extremely pleased with the MARK ii because of the amount of RU-vid tutorials that were available. In the Fall of last year, the FUJI XT3 went on sale and I could not resist the temptation.. Both the OLYMPUS and FUJI SYSTEMS produce exceptional results and thus I find it very hard to choose one over the other. The OMD has onboard IBIS which is helpful as I mostly shoot hand held landscape, BUT the XT3 competes so very closely that it has become a very perplexing choice. They have recently lowered the price on the XT4 ( with IBIS ) so I’m leaning in that direction. Just last week I purchased a FLINGER EF-XT adapter which works extremely well and can now use most ALL of my CANON lenses on the XT. Do you think it is worthwhile to purchase the XT4 and trade in the XT3? You have owned them both. I would love to hear your thoughts if you get a chance. Sorry for being so wordy. mike

The next one is the old and famous Nikkor 105/2.5 PC. You find them for as low as $ 50 to 200. Buy the most expensiv. For low light situasjon, buy the Mitakon 85/1.2. You can buy it with G-mount, but its cheaper to buy the Nikon F-mount, and use the same adapter as with the other ones.

Having said that, I’m still shooting with my Canon 70D, off brand lenses, flash, and Manfroto tripod. I get great photos and 1080 video. When I decided to look into a medium format camera led me back to film. You can pick up medium format film cameras and lenses for next to nothing. And, the cost of black and white is affordable. Its Funny, because i shoot X-t2 98% in crop mode 1:1 and resolution is just fine. We dont need medium format to create art. But it depands on what you want. My photography is All about mood in often bad weather. I dont need details. I crush detail in post. Not Everything is meant to Be in focus.

I knew you'd get the GFX100S if within reach. As a photographic tool, anybody would be kidding him or herself to disagree the IQ is noticabely superior to anything under 10K US. I agree with all of your points on why you were sold on the GFX100S, and people parroting on and on about how don't need more MP are completely missing the point on why (some) people buy a high MP camera like the GFX100S, barring special use cases. Specifically, cropabilfy while still maintaining enough resolution for large prints and not "giving up" any detail relative to mainstream resolutions. The GFX100S has quickly become my go to camera for non-action stills, including shooting pictures of the cats and dogs -- which is an overkill use case but the images coming out of this camera are consistently better (IMO) than any of my other systems from color and rendition standpoint, and I'm not a spray and pray shooter so the small performance penalty is a non-issue. +1 on the 23. Don't try the 80/1.7 unless you intend to buy it.

We should all be so thoughtful in our decisions. Thanks, Mark. It's interesting to me on two fronts: medium format I think was a widely used film option for landscape photographers way back when - it seems to have now come full circle. But also, there are some accomplished landscape photographers who swear by other formats, including micro four/thirds. But the tonal range, detail and colour depth seem so much more compelling with MF. Looking forward to seeing more of your work with this new beast.

Great setup. Love the fact that you don’t need a b mode. Wish battery life were longer and someday I will have that 100s or the upcoming gfx 50s mII with the 23 and 110 f2. Super nice pic (last one)

Thanks for this and all your videos Mark. You have taught so many of us valuable and useful tools and techniques for our photography. Many of us have seen our own work improve vastly with your instruction. Finally, I felt obliged to mention something that I believe many of us struggle with. The new camera system (body and lenses) perhaps costs upward of $10,000 US! Other vloggers we follow now have similar gear. But these costs are miles beyond what most of us can ever hope to justify as "amateur" or even "enthusiast" photographers. Without asking for any pity parties, I should be honest and admit it breaks my heart somewhat that I will probably never have the gear that might allow me to take my photography to your level -- assuming I might have the talent. While RU-vid vloggers are constantly saying that gear doesn't really matter that much, their recent purchases indicate something different. I will always continue to follow your chanel in hopes of learning and improving. There, I've said my piece. Thanks for listening.

Hi Mark, I am planning a German review of the Canon R5 and wanted to ask if I can fade in 2 scenes from this video in my video. It is about where you show the folding display in portrait format and later the histogram at the top of the display. Of course, I would mention your channel in the scenes and also link it. Greethings from Germany, Dennis.

Nice video thank you. I am shooting Hasselblad medium format in 16 bits. Indeed on a computer screen we cannot appreciate the difference with a 14 bits file. But you will see it on a large print that is for sure. The color transition is much more smooth and then you can enjoy what is a medium format 16 bits file is.

Great work as always. If you have the chance to try some adapted lenses on the GFX, I highly recommend it! I have loved using my old Nikon F mount manual focus & manual aperture lenses with my GFX 50R and Fuji's excellent focus peaking. Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4 is incredible for bokeh & near macro detail. The Voigtlander 58mm Nocton f1.4 is epic with the GFX, Tokina 100mm Macro, Nikor 300mm 2.8D....... Most likely Leica, Canon, Hasselblad, Mamya, Pentax, Contax, vintage glass would be incredible as well. Cheers!

Congrats on your decision, Mark. Looks like a great camera. For me, at least, medium format is a bit overkill, so I'm sticking with full frame. If I was going to drop 6k+ on a camera, I'd probably get the A1, as it is right now, I just upgraded to the a7RIV and 61mp even feels a bit like overkill for me, but I'm happy with the choice I made. Now that I have pretty much all the glass I need as well, I can concentrate on the photography which is the important thing.

Any chance you got to compare the 50r to the 100s? I would love to see a formal comparison by a landscape photographer. This winter I picked up the 50r + 32-64mm (this lens is my dream!!) on incredible Fuji sales. Saved a lot of dollars. I was thinking of holding out for the 100s and finding a way to justify the extra $3000-$4,000, but couldn't! As I landscape photographer I was only enticed by the 100 MP sensor (don't need image stabilization or video), but made the determination / guess / assumption that the real world difference in resolution between the 50r and 100s would be negligible. And from the few files I have been able to find that seems to be the case (for landscapes). But I won't be convinced I made the right decision until I can get my hands on a 100s to test. And I love the traditional dials on-top of the 50r. The lcd on the 100s - meh. One great surprise for me in moving to Fuji medium format was that I could put my 20 year old Mamiya 7 lenses back in use with a Photodiox adapter. They are crazy good on this camera!

I am a hobby landscape photographer. I would like to have but sadly can not afford the 100s. I was thinking of pushing my limits and getting the 50r but then again the lenses cost a fortune as well. I keep my xt2 and 10-24 55-200 lenses. I love the gear and the results I'm getting with them. I totally think you are justified with your purchase decision as you're a pro and make a living of photography. All the best, hope you get lot's of great shots.

Congratulation for your decision! Maybe the GFX 50s would be in some ways more advanced, like the D-Pad and the manual dialing wheels on the top for ISO and Shutter Speed (and it is cheaper in second hand, so you can buy one or two lenses extra). I also own the 32-64; I made some Panoramic shots, when I need it wider (or I use my Tamron 15-30 G1 with an Novoflex Adapter - which I already own)...so, there are also some "cheaper" sollutions...;-)

Good decision ... really happy with mine ...but it is unforgiving of poor technique and the DOF differences from FF take some getting used to. The unbelievable dynamic range and almost noiseless mid range ISO's make it a real winner. The new 80/1.7 is astonishingly good. 🙂🙂

Mark - all good justification for your decision. If you are going to go medium format these days, go digital. I don't understand why some photographers get a medium format film camera, go through all the hassle of shooting film, and after processing, pay a fortune to have it drum-scanned to get a digital file. How does that make any sense? If he were alive today, Ansel would be shooting digital and you'd probably bump into him in field using his GFX100s. Looking forward to seeing a ton of great images from your new camera! Cheers.

I also use a two lens system due to lack of $, but it'd still be my main system if $ was no object. It's the Nikon 14-24 mm f 2.8 and the 24-120 mm f4. That gives me continuous coverage from 14mm - 120 mm., which covers about 95% of my work. I do need a 100-500 or 200 - 600, but not so much. That's coming. That said, I'd really like to move to medium format for the image quality. But s yet I don't think Capture One supports Fugi. That's a shame, because C1 has richer color than any other editor I've used or tested, and that would work in concert with Fugi's better images.

I agree Mark with shooting less images & bracketing less with a higher resolution camera. I looked at upgrading from the Fuji XT-2 to XT-4 with 16-55 F2.8 but cost meant I went with the Nikon Z 7ii 24-70 F4 & 14-30 F4. The images are stunning & the latitude for pushing & pulling files is stunning. I hardly ever bracket an image. No more worms. Glad you have finally made a decision. Would you have made that same decision if you had not loaned the Fuji X100s for 60 days first because a lot of money. GAS big time my friend. Stay safe.

Really liked this review. Well done! I would offer that the difference between the 14 to 16 bit image is something that one will see in processing. I have not had the camera long and already I have very much noticed the gradations of this camera in 16 bit mode are simply so creamy and is seen when one pushes the separation of "actors" in a landscape image. There is none of that "cut out" look that one has to contend with in processing.

You mentioned how great the lenses are, but did not give +any+ indication, so far, on street price of lenses or accessories, for instance a teleconverter? I wonder if there would be any adapters available to mount other medium-format lenses? With in-body stabilization, it should be easier to manage, albeit without autofocus or aperture... Still, might be great, especially for landscape work, to be able to use a shift lens, or a Super-Tele?

Excellent choice. The more Fuji content the better. Would be nice to have a GFX100-XT4 comparison once in a while, to see where the GFX really makes the difference. Me I'm still looking for use cases to justify such a switch. In the meantime an XT5 with 43MP would be a nice upgrade for my XT4.

Crop mode does nothing but save you card space...buy another card and crop later. 16bit files wont give you more data you can see on a monitor or print, but for some scientific photography applications, where the data is used for processing data via an algorithm as pure numbers rather than an image, the 16 bit file can be critical. Looks like a lovely bit of kit, but I still don't know why the lens mount can't be an add-on component to allow for using the body on a view camera with nothing blocking tilts etc.

As always, first thank you for the video. For Fuji I shoot with the X-T4 but also own full-frame bodies for other camera manufactures but have been considering the GFX100S. This was a nice view of it and will give some real thought as to what to swap out to make the switch. Hey Mark, thanks for doing this. I enjoyed this and your previous video on the GFX100S. It also made me laugh when you said about it slowing you down and making you think that little bit harder about your shots. It reminded me of an article I read many years ago about an old guy who’d finally made the switch to digital, after years of being reluctant to do this. He said that his biggest headache in switching was it made him take way, way too many images, as they treated them as effectively ‘free’ compared to shooting film, where you had to think about the cost per image or roll of film. Then he had the really smart idea of only buying memory cards big enough to hold either 24 or 36 images per card! - just like 35mm film stock That forced him to slow down and not take so many photos. I thought it was a genius idea 👍

The only lens that can resolve fully to the 100MP is the 110mm prime. You should get that instead of the 100-200 or you're better off with one of the 50MP GFX cameras
