It’s been a long time since we’ve taken a road trip, much less gone "home". And for the first time, Nikki is taking you home to meet the family. See her childhood hometown and our ride around the USA. #VanLife

It's been over 3 years since we've been in the USA together. When we began planning this trip home there were two driving factors: 1) It's cyclone season in the South Pacific 2) We haven't seen some of our family in 4 or 5 years!
It was that second realization that sparked the idea of a road trip across the USA. And then the cards aligned and my mom bought a small RV #VanLife 😎
So join us as we road trip from Colorado, to New Mexico and end in Texas. Along the way Nikki share's a little history about her childhood and takes you on a tour of her (very, very) small childhood hometown. And the icing on the cake: We finally get to meet our new nephew! It feels good to come home.
Here's a rundown of vid if you want to skip around:

01:31 - The coolest drive from hot desert to cool forest
05:14 - Meet Nikki's Aunt Rebecca & See where she gets her creativity

08:17 - VanLife Project - Storage and Stickdown + Van Tour
14:25 - Van, RV or Boat...it all breaks down
15:05 - OMG! Welcome to West Texas (smell-o-vision)

I don't know what to say but Thank You! 💕 Sharing so much of my personal history was the scariest thing I've done in a long time. Thank you for being kind, supportive and most of all...for being my virtual family around the world. Next trip home...we'll share Jason's story...which includes a lot of lawn mowing. ;)

Thank you for this video, and all the other ones too. We lived in a small town that we left many moons ago. Now the small towns have all joined together and grown into cities. When we go back, I can still see what we left behind, but it isn't the place that lives within us. It's other people's home town now.

Home. Such a strange concept to me. When I think that there are people who grew up in one place from birth through high school, I can only imagine what that’s like, but really I can not even begin to imagine. That there are people who know their elementary school friends because they graduated high school with them. Can go to one place, find many high school friends still there and visit with their children. Can go to a high school reunion and know everyone there. All these things and more are so very foreign to me. Home. It’s all Strange to me. And oddly comforting. Thank you for this video. D.

Two things. One, having just watch this vlog again I heard you say you became the legal guardian of your sister. I adopted my two godsons when they were both 2, best thing I ever did in my life. They now live in Paris, have adopted 2 beautiful grand babies and one is in fashion, one is a chemist and designs perfumes for some of the top fashion houses. Two, tell Jason I feel for him. When I use to go home I would spend the whole time working on my parents house. It did get to the point where I slowly led them through the process of down sizing and that included getting rid of the weight of the house. Luck for them I had already been living outside of the box home and was traveling/living all around the world. We now own 10 condos in a small town on the Oregon Coast. It is self financed and all the positive cash flow goes into a retirement fund for my sisters and myself. Don't take this wrong, but when I get to watch your adventures it reminds me so much of who I am. Sharing is caring, right? Ciao Bella

Nikki and Jason: I believe you have crossed a threshold here. I have regarded you as RV'ers who make good videos, then sailors who make really good videos. Now, whether travelling or not, you are filmmakers. Absolutely beautiful in every way - story, cinematography, music, editing. But most of all, heart - true, real, heart. Thank you!

Oh my Lord, what a story you have to tell. Thank you so much in sharing with strangers what your life growing up was like. What an honor to meet your Aunt and Uncle, and your Dad and your "sister". I was deeply touched and while I'm in my old home town, nothing is the same any longer. My house was sold, torn down and they built a duplex. My school was torn down and they built a new "modern" one. The farm house I spent my weekends and summers in was torn down and sold in lots to build other houses. The only thing that remains is the cemetery. My family donated the land back in the early 1900's and I'm here finalizing the details of my parents internment here this summer. Thanks for sharing.

Nikki isn’t it interesting, we follow you and Jason on all of your adventures to far-flung places around the world that most of us can only dream of and yet it is a video about going home that has moved many of us so deeply. As you walked us through your hometown, your school experience, your family, and all of the jobs you had before leaving town there was nothing that said this young woman would tell us stories of her adventures above and below the sea from halfway around the world. I had a friend once tell me God wastes nothing in your life. I have always marveled at how both of you have embraced so many new things, technologies, countries, from the simplest to the largest challenges with great enthusiasm and skill and yet with childlike wonder that brings us all joy. Perhaps it was your embracing of all the opportunities that were available in that small town despite any limitations you may have had that prepared you to set off to see the world for the rest of us. May both of you continue to enjoy His blessings in your unique lives. Your stories are worth telling.

Oh please, hell no!! To Hollywoodize/corporatize/plasticize this wonderful couple would ruin everything that's so absolutely wonderful about them and erode their very essence; just like it does everything else it touches. This is exactly what YT was "supposed" to be all about, to bypass the brain-eating microfilter of the vapid oily studio exec that chokes the life out of anything and everything worthwhile. These two are great because they are the way they are.

Nikki, I want to thank the both of for all of your episodes but this last one of your home, family and past really hit home. I am within 6 months of hitting my 90th birthday, I lost my wonderful wife who I was blessed to have had for 54 years, and frankly was still feeling depressed and how much I miss her, But your story brought me back to all the great times we had together and most of all she gave me two wonderful daughters, ( one who I am living with now) Now when I start to feel down, I can be brought back to reality thinking how blessed I am to have had a wonderful past. You are both blessed! Thank You both again.

Extremely well said. That was very difficult for me to watch. Not because it's not a great video. It is a great video and tells a part of Nikki's very personal story. Just like so many others. Thank you for that - truly. This one brought me too close to my small town home. It's interesting how where we come from can leave us with such mixed feelings - proud of small town hard work, proud of good friends that have been good friends for a lifetime, and all of that difficult history too as you say. It's never all just one way or the other is it. Nikki and Jason, you have a way of getting deep into a person's heart.

Divine timing that turned out to be a blessing for all, finding the strength to make "the hardest decision" of your lives to bring Cleo home to land and friends with her. buddy Singha then taking this road trip to reconnect with family and friends on a bittersweet journey ... Whatever was unspoken, Nikki, you are one of the best sisters and aunties in the whole world. Meeting your creative, kind-hearted aunt in this video, it obviously runs in the family. Don't know if applies, but I just discovered videos on RU-vid Crappy Childhood Fairy channel with great, healing insights and practices for free and courses on her website. Great job as always. Jason, framing this memory-filled trip. Your complimentary personalities, skill sets, good hearts and humor combined with deep care for all beings is what the the world needs. I nominate you two as King and Queen of the dawning Harmony and Understanding Age of Aquarian Age "prom!"

I have never commented before and I’m not sure why,I watch every episode with my Sunday morning coffee. This is the most moving video yet. What I cannot understand is why anyone who watches your story unfold would dislike this or any episode. We all have many layers, like an onion, pealing them back one at a time reveals who we are and how we navigate through life. You and Jason are part of the answer not the problem, keep making memories, but it’s true, when all is said and done, it’s your beginnings that you will cherish.

I was born and lived the first dozen years of my life in the much bigger "small" Texas town of Denison TX up on the Red River before moving with my parents to Chattanooga TN in the summer before starting the seventh grade. I moved back to DFW (certainly not a small town) about twenty years later and lived there for another twenty-plus years before moving back again to Chattanooga TN. Yet, I still consider myself more of a small-town boy than anything else. Coming back for a visit to Denison was always truly bittersweet even in the best of circumstances. Your story is of someone who made the best of the cards you were dealt at the time and chose well, both then and later. I know then you probably couldn't begin to imagine the richness and the wonders of the life you've lived since those days. I've always been impressed both with your tenacity and your willingness to choose honor and grace and kindness over the other options in the face of the adversity and challenges you've both encountered along your travel journey. Nikki, in many ways, you break the stereotype of a small-town, rural West Texas woman, unless of course you actually know some small town, rural West Texas women and you know that it breeds "grit" in its truest form. I also loved that you included the political statements in the window. While there's certainly plenty of evidence to the contrary at times, Texans tend to lean towards being more complex than it's assumed given how we are typically portrayed. Also, as someone who's worked in the video production world since the 1970's - you both are wonderful storytellers and have really developed a great feel for where the story lies and how to tell it in a way that draws in the viewer. I know how much work goes into shooting, editing, writing, voiceing, and placing music in a 20+ minute long video - every freakin' week. Thank you so much for sharing these stories with us. It's appreciated very much.

"Desert beautiful, not forest beautiful", thanks Jason, I needed that. I grew up in BC Canada then my family moved to Las Vegas NV. As an 11 yr that grew up on a dirt road, with a big creek nearby, with the same 12 kids. All of us having to walk through the woods to get to school. I hated the place, mostly, It was kind of exciting as we moved into an apartment complex with all the amenities, pool rec room, bbqs and nice grounds. But I missed the trees. I did finally after 4 yrs begin to see the desert beauty. It is not the same as forest beauty so all these yrs I was in a sense, denying the beauty of the desert. Wonderhussy channel also helped. Cool seeing this older video, I found you when you went back to Tongo where Curiosity sat. Oh and there is something about folks who grow up in and around the desert. Many of us have a very adventurous spirit That was a beautiful look into Nikki's life in a small town. Sad to see it dwindling. I lived in a small town in Iowa, 1000 ppl in the entire county. I worked at the Casey General Store which turned out to be the best job coming into a small town like that after 30 yrs in Las Vegas. Talk about culture shock

Long time subscriber, so thank you for the tour Nikki! Of course your camera man did a wonderful job as usual! I live in southwest B.C. Canada, and now I'm retired, yet I live within 7-8 miles from the home I was brought home as a baby! I've lived in our home for 37 years now....MUCH more than the norm I know, but it's comfortable, has a good sized back yard for our grandkids from our two daughters, and our 37' Tiffin Phaeton sits in the front driveway, awaiting it's next trip! I must say, I absolutely 'loved' your RV trips, and I'm a landlubber, so I have seen a handful of your seaworthy trips, but I personally prefer my two feet on the ground, where my one and only sailing trip ended with my lunch being sent over the rear of the boat! Nonetheless, I feel like part of your RU-vid/FB family, and will continue to connect by commenting on your upcoming video's off and on. I'm hopeful one day you'll return to travelling on land, as you two where SO helpful on both your experience and enjoyment at the time of your RV lifestyle, that it recently helped in my switching to Lithium LifePO4 batteries in our RV! Cleo is watching from above...so 'make waves'!

jeez, I don't know, but I believe this is my favorite GWTW video. Same age as your aunt so maybe that brought some interest, and I have family in and around Amarillo/Pampa/Borger...know the smell of crude oil and feedlots too well. :-) Very brave and bold of you to let us see a bit of 'home.' You didn't have to but it was so real and comforting to see how home influenced and molded you into the woman you are today. As a great grandpa, it was nice to see you with those beautiful children and to hear that story. You have, and are, destined to do great things. I look forward to more of your exceptional video stories...

Nikki, this was a great video! Going to your hometown Hart and to see where you were raised and waht you accomplished, is a credit to your drive to succeed in life. A small town provides achievers like yourself a great perpesctive of life in general but you have multiplied that 1000 times with your travels around the world with Jason. Jason is one lucky guy to have you in his life. This video is one of the best in your portfolio. Thank you for sharing your hometown with us.

I thought the previous episode was very emotional, but this one touched me in so many ways. Simply put it was beautifully done. I could tell by the tone of your voice that it was difficult for you to discuss many of the things we see on the video. But you are not alone young lady. I couldn’t begin to tell the story around my family who are now all gone. While my relationships with them faded over the years right now I wish I could have made the trip to see my family the way you shared your life with us. Sometimes we all need to go home for awhile.

Things are as they are. They can hold you down - or you can rise and escape. Thank you Nikki - for helping us know how far you've come. For sharing things that are very personal. For being a light to thousands of us who have tread similar paths, and still need to escape. Between last week and this week - I'm feeling more compassion and love for you and your journey through life. I hope you continue for a long time. A really long time. You're helping us who are still in our own version of a "hometown."

I keep trying to figure out how to say what I'm feeling in regards to this video ... and I realize I just don't have the writing chops for it so instead I'm just going to say, "thank you." I can't even tell you exactly what I'm thanking you for because it's a mish-mash of lots of different things. One thing you and Jason's video's always do for me is remind me to take a deep breath, even if it isn't all beautiful scenery and exotic locales but instead a moment of emotion whether subdued or intensely felt. So just...thank you. :)

Nikki that quote about coming home from F Scott Fitzgerald is one of my favorite quotes from that author. Thank you for sharing so much of your hometown and home-people with us. Beautiful beautiful honest video. There's another quote from the movie Mr. Fitzgerald's short stories was based upon "Benjamin Button" that I thought about as I watched your hometown video. I'm sure you know it but I think it embodies the courage and pioneering spirit that you and Jason have. It goes like this.. "“For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.” ― Benjamin Button, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I don't even know where to start. I have so many things running through my head after watching this episode. I honestly can say I have missed your road trips. I love the sailing videos but these always seem more personal and this one was off the chart. Nikki, thank you so much for sharing your roots. It sounds like you had an amazing childhood full of adventures and probably why you still seek adventures. Close personal relationships with so many people combined with a love of community. Fitzgerald was correct. I left my home town and didn't go back for 20 years. I wandered the city like you and remembered all the things growing up. I was questioning so much till I realized, it was me that changed not the town. Amazing storytelling as always. Thank you.

More importantly, I don't think I've ever been more impressed with a Human story like yours. Common threads interwoven in unique patterns are what make Nikki the person she is today! I don't think that I've ever commented on one of your videos before, which is odd because I truly love them. We met in passing one day in California (Paradise by the Sea) and I've loved following you ever since. Agree with so many others that this was not only courageous but so very well done. I didn't think you could surpass the whale dive, but you've managed it once again. You are just such a wonderful couple, with such a classy aunt whose impact on you (Nikki) is obvious, and your talent in both film and storytelling is simply off the charts. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.

That might have been one of my favorite videos ever. Loved your small W. Texas town story. It just rings so true. It could have been the story of any small town in America. I also loved the quote by Fitzgerald. The little E. Texas town I'm from is the same way. The two of you have inspired this old man and his wife many times. Thank you for letting us in a little bit now we admire you just a little more.

I feel the need to take this opportunity to add my voice to the chorus and congratulate you on your wonderful videos and website. This past fall and winter I have binge watched your entire catalog of videos, going back to day one of your rving life, as well as reading every blog you wrote. My only complaint is that I am now all caught up, and have to be satisfied with your weekly episodes. And, I do look forward to them every Sunday. I came to your site somewhat late, as I was already watching (all back to day 1) about 8 other sailing channels, and figured I had to stop somewhere. When someone on one of the other channels said that they found your channel the best of all, I decided it was time to find out. So glad I didn’t wait any longer. I can tell you, from my experience, you are at the very top of the list as far as sailing channels, and likely, all types of youtube channels. The quality of your productions is unmatched. It is easy to see the effort and expertise you both put in. And, you are both such naturals for the medium. Your wonderful and friendly personalities come across loud and clear in every episode. Somewhat like you, when I retired, at age 60, my first priority was to get to know my own country better. I bought a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and spent the last 3 summers camping across Canada, from east coast to west, north to south. An incredible adventure. Have been spending my winters on the Florida Panhandle, and am planning on spending this coming summer at home (Collingwood, Ontario), for a change, while deciding what comes next in my life. I have done some sailing on the great lakes, but, I am single, and boating by myself does not appeal to me. Travelling by vehicle alone is one thing, but doing so by boat is taking solitary to a whole different level. My biggest envy of you two is that you have each other. As a man Jason, I must tell you how fortunate you are to have Nikki to share your dreams and adventures with. I have to admit to being a great admirer of hers, and, as you so sincerely said in your “midnight confession”, I agree that she is so smart, capable, beautiful, and, just so dang nice. I will add another, courageous. Don’t know that I have ever met a woman so totally missing the “fear” gene! Jason, I could say many great things about you as well, it’s just that, you know, as a man, I seem to notice and appreciate women a little more.....sure you will understand! I envy the heck out of both of you for having each other! I wish you fair winds and many, many adventures ahead, and, I have no doubt whatsoever that you will go on living life to it’s fullest. I will continue to look forward to your videos and blogs every week. You inspire me, and so many others, to continue our own adventures in life. Thank you for sharing your lives with all of us.

West Texas, an experience or two. A long long time ago while driving across West Texas my wife informed me that she couldn't hold it much longer. Soon after a sign informed me a rest stop was only a mile away. My city-girl wife was greatly relieved as we pulled off the freeway until she noticed that there was no building in sight but only a set of stairs going up one side of the cattle fence and down the other with a path leading into the bushes. She quickly said "Go on, and hurry!" And so I did. Also, having never seen a cotton field before, like the one in the video, we stopped and wandered out into the field to see the cotton plants close up. Little did we know that the field was full of chiggers and so we itched and scratched ourselves for days after. We also discovered that the pod that encloses the cotton boll, when opened and dried, is very sharp. Knowing that gave me greater empathy for the people who used to pick cotton by hand.
