You dont search for projects - they find you!
I got offered a KUKA Robotic arm and couldnt resist to buy it. Now I have the salad!
Type in the comments what I should be building out of this. Also correct me on any stupid miss information I said out loud in the video.

alternate idea: mount it upside down on the ceiling, paint it white and attach a GladOS head to it. (very practical and useful project!)

Bad idea. The A2 counterbalance is built for gravity in one direction. Inverting the robot without replacing the counterbalance with an inverted version could cause it to move incorrectly.

My suggestions, first see if you can program full range of movement at increasing speeds, second measure repeatability / accuracy at different loads across movement range, third and most important planar 3d printing! 😊

Maybe make it a shop hand with switchable attachments for 3d-Printing, welding, maybe just a tray or a vice for material handling or positioning. Very nice orange beast! Consider safety for anyone working in reach ... i.e. position/touch-switches or similar.

Get in touch with Dave at Dave's Armoury to learn about robot control. There are industrial 3D printer slicers specifically for robots like this. But this robot would be useful as a production welder or auto-loader/-unloader for your large machines. Ooh, you could cosplay it as the arm of the semi-trapped djinn from the Magi manga/anime - everything but its head can leave the vessel.

How exciting! I love seeing how the Lignum channel uses his Kuka robots for CNC woodworking operations. As others have mentioned, my first thought was immediately some sort of nonplanar 3D printer. The sort of additive manufacturing you could do with it (if you can figure out the complex slicing), would be incredible. :)

The motherboards and hard drives used to fail on the KRC1 controllers. Image the hard drive if its still working and have a look for the original CD's that had the operating software and maintenace manuals on them. When shipped from KUKA they were in pocket inside they controller door.

Ah a KUKA from when it was still German! An obvious application would be to build a multi-axis (>3) 3D printer, for prints with double curved surfaces and isotropic mechanical properties. Modifying a slicer for this purpose may be PhD level stuff though. Attaching a camera to the head also provides interesting opportunities for photogrammetry applications. Maybe it can even work like a 3D pantorouter, first scan an object, and than immediately print a copy. I can't say I have any experience with robotic arms, but in recent years, I've grown more and more interested in working with them. I may join your discord. Edit: Maybe it can also pass the butter?
@Roetz40

My only experience with KUKA robots is working in their integration shop in Michigan on the conveyors that I helped build and then again in the KUKA body shop at the jeep plant in Toledo Ohio. Most of the robots would have been similar to this one just the 2004/2005 versions. Only I was just watching them in awe as they were building cars and never got anywhere near the actual operation of them.
@dan5her

You should mount a laser pointer on it and set it up to follow people around when they enter the shop. No practical reason, but it will make them think the robot uprising is coming

What precision does the robot have in repeated movement? While working on a bigger project for it use it as a really crazy flexible camera operator for your videos😁
@Roetz40
@Roetz40 3 года назад
It is listed with +-0,2mm repeatability. But that doesn't mean it will chase a perfectly straight line from one point to another. In terms of camera mount - that's 100% what I'll do! Thank you!
@zweiter
@zweiter 3 года назад
@@Roetz40 So I guess the repeatability is dependent on the amount of joints involved in a particular movement - each joint adding it’s error.
@Roetz40
@Roetz40 3 года назад
@@zweiter Well repeatability isn't that much. But precision is, as you pointed out because of the linked connections. If the controller has enough time, it will reach a set point with very minimal error. But if it has to interpolate 5 axis in real time on a dynamic path - the precision will suffer badly.

Automatic coffe pot handler, there is no such thing as overkill. I have a friend who got a small robotarm kit from kickstarter, when it was built, he really had no use for it, but finally he placed it besides the TV to flick the switch on the HDMI selector for his game consoles, so he does that with an app on his phone now...

My Prototrak milling machine from 1996 is just as capable as our new Haas milling machine. Faster actually to program conversationally than the Haas, but much slower speeds and feeds. It also has the 3.5" floppy disk. It’s super easy to convert those to a usb floppy disk emulator. I did mine with one I got on eBay.

Kuka has a cnc software package that you can buy if it works for the krc 1 I don't know. Never seen it never used it just know about it. Although the mostly used and latest now is the "krc4" models. I have worked on the krc1's and 2's but experience is limited with them. Have done alot of krc4's. Everything you received "should" be plug and play. All plugs etc are keyed so you can't break anything unless the previous owners themselves changed something. You can get in contact if you are in need of some documentation. I have alot that I believe will really help you if you've never used one before
