I've been an Atari gamer since it came out in 1977 when I was a kid. I still enjoy the console in 2022. As for games, Imagic and Activision made some of the best games on the Atari 2600 back in the day. I was surprised you didn't have Pitfall or HERO on your list, but as you mentioned, not everyone's list will be the same LOL. As a side note, I have the exact same Pac-Man binder you keep your high scores in. Be sure to checkout some Atari 2600 homebrews. Wonderful stuff being made in present day for the console.

River Raid, Yar's Revenge, Pitfall (and unlike most people, I like it way better than Pitfall II), Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Phoenix, Frogger. I find it hard to claim certain games as being better for doing things differently. Megamania is an excellent game but it isn't a better game than say Demon Attack because of it's variety in attack patterns, The stricter nature of Demon Attack has the player getting good within that particular design. Demon Attack is a blinding fun tight shooter that isn't any better than Atlantis for example which is arguably a very simple design but is brilliant within that once you get to master it. Atlantis is uniquely brilliant in a way Both Demon Attack and Megamania don't do That doesn't stop each one of them being a favourite of course but not better objectively

When playing Vanguard, do not shoot the boss straight away. Hold your fire and dodge for as long as possible - the longer you wait the more points you get. I had Vanguard as a kid and played countless hours and I didn't know that. I also found something new about this game just this week. The Atari logbook challenge says to play game 15 on difficulty B. Pro (Blue Angel): shoot 17 (I did 19 in 1982) Master (Flying Phantom): shoot 26 (I did it in 2006) Wizard (Scourge of the Skies): shoot 34 (I did 35 in 2020) I felt it made the Atari look bad by 1981. I got _Armor Ambush_ in 1982, but that didn't have a 1-player mode either. _Time Pilot_ looks like the flying part of _Combat._ Maybe for variety you could have another player use paddles to avoid being hit in the jet fighters. If you press both buttons simultaneously, it thinks you're moving the joystick left and right at the same time, which causes a weird effect.

At the time, I didn't know that M-Network was porting Intellivision games in 1982-3. Too bad they didn't do that a year earlier (and add 1-player modes) when there was less competition so they might have scored a 1-million seller. I got _Armor Ambush_ and _Super Challenge Baseball_ when they came out, but the "super challenge" was finding opponents willing to learn the controls and play well. Someone and his brother should do videos about the best two-player games on Atari that they loved playing. It's almost a different system from 1977-1980 (lots of two-player games) to 1981-1984 (popular 1-player games).

I may have beat it when I first got it before 1982. I cleaned my paddles and went back and beat game 1 with one ball in 2020. Sadly, _Super Breakout_ is too tough with the little bar for me to win the logbook challenge.

I think it came out in January 1983, (I got it) and they stopped doing catalogs, so anyone who bought an Atari cart in late 1982 or later, didn't get the "ads" for other "new" games.

My Sears Tele-Games version was from Christmas 1979 I believe. It was my machine of choice until about 1981 when I got my VIC-20, but I still used it a lot until about 1985 or so. Freeway, StarMaster, StarRaiders, Ms. Pac Man, Demon Attack, Yars Revenge, Combat, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Missile Command and Atlantis were in my top ten in the early 80's. The list is a bit different now. I still love playing my 2600 games to this day.

I dismissed the original Atari VCS because of its primitive graphics compared to what I was used to from the video game arcades. I got an Atari 800 on closeout when the 1200XL was released and I learned everything I ever needed to know about computer science on it. I've noticed in recent years that while the graphics on the 2600 are poor, the playability is certainly there. F'rinstance Centipede is a good example. Those sure don't look like mushrooms but the playability looks as good as with any other version. The Defender and Joust look better than I would have ever expected from a 2600. Almost as good as the games I played in the arcades. I'm quite impressed with what some programmers have been able do with the limited graphic capabilities on the machine. Thank you so much for this list of games I need to look for. Missile Command is just about my favorite Atari game of all time. In the arcades it was the first machine that offered a trackball controller. I got an Atari CX22 Trek Ball Controller specifically to play Missile Command on my Atari 800. Fortunately it will work anywhere out can plug in a DIN 9-pin Atari CX40 joystick.

Wow! I did NOT expect Megamania to be #1! I spent the whole vid hoping it would at least get an honorable mention. I didn't have my own 2600 as a kid, just played with other folks when i could. Later, as a young adult in the early 2000s, I finally bought my own 2600 on ebay. Megamania was in the lot of games I bought, and it was the first time I ever played it. So, it's a "later" game for me. But, wow, it stood out as the most playable and re-playable game I had for the system. As much as I love old faves like Pitfall, I spent way more time with Megamania. Thanks for the video! I subscribed!

The MOST COMPLEX Atari 2600 game has 21 screens to the left or right, when you go up or down out of any screen it goes to different parts of the city, when you go into a phone booth you go into different parts of the subway & when you exit the subway to the left, right or down you go to different parts of the city, if you keep going up you stay in the subway that's 4 to 5 different parts of the subway. you need to put all the robbers in jail & complete a 3 piece bridge while the helicopter picks up parts of the bridge & puts them in different parts of the city while kryptonite satellites are moving around through out the city & subway. if a satellite touches you when you are Super Man you lose your power to fly until you kiss Louis lane. when you put all robbers (Lex Luther is the only robber that has a hella pack on his back & flies around) in jail & complete the 3 piece bridge at the bridge sight part of the city. you must go to the phone booth with a phone on it to change from Superman to Clark Kent so you can walk across the Bridge then into the phone both with a diamond on it because that is the daily Planet building, X-Ray vision is when you push the button down & move the joystick in any direction to see up, down, right or left screens before you walk or fly to those screens. This is by FAR the MOST COMPLEX Atari 2600 game EVER made (I mean its so complex most people have NO idea how to play it so they think & say bad things about the GREATEST game EVER made for the Atari 2600 it was one of the FIRST releases after the system was released) but it can be one of fastest games to complete: I seen it completed in 38 seconds. I completed it in less then a minute. The Atari 2600 SuperMan is by far THE BEST GAME FOR THE Atari 2600 it sells for under $5 most the time. it beats the crap out ALL these 1 screen games for sure. today is 12-27-23

A very good list and I would agree with your choices, especially Enduro and Jr. Pacman. Most 2600 owners rave about Ms. Pacman, but I think Jr. is superior. I'd also mention that if you like "death from above shooters" like Demon Attack or Megamania, check out Activision's Spider Fighter. I really like that one. A couple of other games that should get honorable mention are Berzerk and Asteroids...

I'm not sure of my top Ten but my top 5: 1. Kaboom! Easily the most fun game on the console. You give a paddle controller to a ten year old boy that has no interest in Atari 2600 games or your wife and she will have fun trying to catch all the bombs in the Buckets! 2. Dragonfire- Amazing game with 2 basic screens and tons of strategy and reflexes. First screen you have to cross a draw bridge while fireballs are being chucked at you. You will have to duck, jump or Duck/Jump to avoid these fireballs or if you get in too much trouble run back all the way to the right to your safe spot from all fireballs. Later levels draw bridge pulls in/out to make it even harder. Second screen you have a little hut you can sprint out of at a frenetic pace and collect beautiful treasures while a dragon on the bottom of the screen runs back and forth chucking fireballs at you. Every cycle the dragon changes color and difficutly. Black dragon is he final hardest dragon before the next cycle. Cool thing about the Atari version of this game is it has the most beautiful treasure much nicer than even the Colecovision Version because the developer used a prograing trick giving them access to the full 128 color palette of the 2600 the Intellivision and Colecovision versions do not have this. Worse yet the Colecovision version of this game the dragon doesn't even run he sits on his fat ass spitting fireballs at you. 2600 version is easily the best. 3. Missile Command: Loved the arcade version and 2600 has an amazing version of this game. 4. Chopper Command: It's basically Activisions version of Defender but much better than Atari's Defender but on par with Defender II. You fly a Helicopter instead of a spaceship which honestly makes more sense to pick up ur buddies but I totally understand pickig Defender II over it if you did the graphics are a little flashier. Yar's Revenge: Just a very addictive game and the sound effects and trippy graphics were perfect for the 2600. 5. Pitfall II: Lost Caverns Probably the most technically impressive game on this list. Only true 2600 game with a real soundtrack. They cheated by using an extra chip but still counts as an official released game. I honestly played The Original Pitfall a lot more hours but only because I didn't own this game until I was an adult and every Atari owner had a copy of Pitfall.

I begged my mother for Atari's Chess back in the early 80s. I specifically remember her saying it was an extra expensive game and it was $50 at the time. She ended up relenting and got it for me as a Christmas gift. I played the heck out of that game. I remember at the highest difficulty, it took the computer 24 hours per move. That cracked me up... I guess you would have to leave the Atari on for like a month straight to play a proper game at that level. I never did it, but I think I did let it think for most of a day, just as a goof... with the screen flickering non-stop while it computed its next move. lol

Interesting selection. Some others that are worth checking out, if you haven't tried them: Venture An Adventure style game, with more variety of enemies. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Snowspeeder vs Imperial Walkers Star Raiders 1st person space fighter "sim". One of the few games that used the keypad. RealSports Volleyball Beach volleyball, with background animation and a day/night cycle. A fun little game that's often overlooked because most of the "RealSports" series sucked. Moon Patrol Perhaps not the best port, but a fun version nonetheless. Keystone Kapers Cop vs robber in a booby-trapped shopping mall. Lot's of Activation style obstacles. Warlords 4-way "breakout" using paddles. There's also Medieval Mayhem, a better homebrew arcade port. Haunted House Perhaps the first console "survival horror". Open exploration of a 4 story "house", with smooth vertical scrolling on each level, and a variety enemies. Rather impressive for an early 2600 release. Jungle Hunt Brave the jungle to save the girl, a variety of gameplay on each stage. A decent port of the arcade game. Secret Quest Clear labyrinthine stations overrun with aliens, each bigger than the last. It takes awhile to get to the end, at least it offers save codes. Solaris A sci-fi shooter with a combination of planet and space combat. One of the largest and graphically best looking games ever released for the system. It's so big, it has a separate game map that spans 16 screens! My mind was seriously blown the first time I played it.

Stargate! Brilliant game. It gets manic as you progress. My brother and I used to love playing it together, we'd take turns in being pilot and gunner! (The second joystick controlled ’inviso' which was temporary invulnerability, smart bombs which took every enemy out on screen and emergency hyperspace which could get you out of and sometimes into a jam!)
