The circumlocutions, discursiveness, equivocations, and euphemisms from Mister Daly are absolutely unique! They had a lady on whose job was managing a lie detector for use with small companies or for court appearances, and Bennett proclaimed, "If you used that on Daly, the machine would break!!" The look on John's face was PRICELESS!!
#2 was done during the final show. It was conceived as a last minute substitute in case a guest failed to show up on time and no one else was available. Since it was never used (they did come very close to using it once), they decided to use the bit during the last show.
One bit that I really liked, for a mystery guest question Dorothy asked, "I assume we established ice?" and Daly says, "Actually I believe it was established long before we got here!" Cue Daly being very pleased with himself. Also, Dorothy: Well, there aren't any lady conductors! Daly: You haven't ridden on the trolleys much. Cue Daly being very pleased with himself.
i'm sure a lot more...but you forgot his reaction to the question about if Lauren Bacall was a "glamour girl".......he said...:YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...in a very deep voice!!!!!...LOL
I don't know whether they would have gotten Steve Allen very quickly if Steve hadn't spoken in his own voice because Buddy Hackett and Arlene still kept their blindfolds on.
I’m trying to understand how Bennett Cerf knew so early on that John Daly was playing himself, unless it was merely case of him recognizing his voice, which I thought was disguised very well. This show had great cameramen, too.
A few years back, when GSN used to run the old B&W shows every night... and I watched, every night. It was clear that mister Cerf was smart. Really smart. Most of the panelist were smart. The show was smart oh for those days! I missed that we don't have smart TV shows and smart people on them anymore.
