Aw man, I'm sorry to hear that you had to sell a lot of your older SNES games, that would tear me up. A long while back I ended up also having to sell pretty much all of my games, but I managed to hold onto the SNES RPGs. I'm glad to see you were able to get so many of these classics back though! :)
Thanks so much Derek! Hopefully after the pandemic the prices will go back down and I can begin to restore my collection. I really only got into collecting about a year ago - before that I just bought whatever I wanted, but now I'm really trying to look for those rare and cool editions out there. Maybe we can do a collab where we both talk about collecting/buying/selling and why we both had to do what we had to do. I think that would be interesting :)
As an adult with probably the most income I've ever made, I'm starting to collect games that either I was dumb enough to sell as a kid, or stuff my brother sold. I have to get my stuff back. Never selling this stuff again!
@@DHamblen I'm definitely filtering a lot of stuff out, that didn't really impact me as much as other games. So building it up again is a lot easier and straight forward this time around
When the ps1 came as the next generation, I took all of my SNES console and video games to Gamestop to get a store credit. That was about 1995-6ish. They offer $20. I was astound of the price. I took my console and collection and left the store. Some of the games that I bought were over $75. To get it for a mere $20 is an insult. Each games were worth 50 cents. I have at that time and still have it now. Super Mario RPG, FF3, Chrono Trigger, Bof1 and 2, contra 3, tmnt 4, Mega man x and x2, mk2, and mk3 and many more.
SNES will always have a place in my heart for RPGS, it really solidified my interest in RPGS. You have such a great collection of some of the best SNES rpgs, thanks for sharing with us Dave!
@@shawnlittle346 Yeah, I frequently see complaints about it's buggy hit detection, the annoying grind for alchemy ingredients and trying to find whatever the $%#! the dog is sniffing at!! lol. And they're not "wrong" but I think those points get exaggerated and it certainly didn't ruin the game for me.
I’ve been waiting for this video for a while. The golden age of gaming for me. I had so many of these same games and they were all sold while I was in college without me knowing. I’ve since tried to get so many of them back, but thank god for emulators I can play them again.
Cause many people think it's a hidden gem when it's more mainstrean than ever. The reallity is that there's not many copies and the demand keeps growing.
Super Mario RPG, is my Favorite RPG game of all time. I wish they made true sequel to this game. Platforming/Secrets/Interesting Story/Funny Goofy stuff. IT had it all.... best Mario game ever made.
It's so weird to see some SNES carts I can't remember the last time I thought about actually putting one in a system. Was very nostalgic to think about. It's crazy how much games have changed.
Almost all my games were sold by my sister. I recollected all of them but only cartridges. I use universal game cases for presentation. Nice collection have a nice weekend.
Great list! I’m glad you have been able to rebuild your collection. Back in the day, I used to trade-in my PS1 games to get newer consoles/games and ended up regretting it… but slowly I’ve been re-purchasing my long lost RPG’s (and other genres) to build up my collection. Every time I’m reunited with a game it makes me very happy to play it again. ☺️
I thought this was "Most Valuable SNES RPGs" before I read the title. Saw Link to the Past on there and thought "Oh no THAT can of worms" haha. I'm about to drop the cash on a SMRPG cart, dearly wish I still had mine from childhood. But you're right, life happens
Woah! I still have every one of those except Kirby and E.V.O. who knew I had that much money in games still sitting around. I'll probably never sell them, but great to know! Thanks for the excellent list and keep up the wonderful content!
I actually worked for Rhino Games for a bit in the mid 2000s, hearing it mentioned so much brings back memories (Halo 2 launch was a great time!). I think my collection for SNES is only FF 2 and FF 3, loose carts of course.
Great Collection! 👍 I have most of those except EVO. You could clean some of those old stickers off, a Clorox wipe or a little bit of rubbing alcohol can help.
Thank you for this, I went to a game store close to my town and they were selling Earthbound for $500 bucks flat and I was blown away thinking “this can’t be right”
I'm sorry you went through that rough time and basically had to sell your childhood. That hurts. Rebuilding and expanding your retro collection is like a real life side quest, huh? Keep going!
Always fun to visit this gaming time period. I have it for Playstation but prefer playing it on SNES, but that game is Ogrebattle. I loved that game when I rented it from a local video store, my friend and I have great memories of that one and wish I owned the Super Nintendo version. This is a solid group of games, glad you have many of these heavy hitters back in your lineup! Thanks David!
I used to have a few of the titles you mentioned in this video, but my older brother had financial problems. He needed the money to pay off his debt and sold my games for whatever he could get his hands on. I'm not hunting for them, because I got a snes mini deck with preloaded games namely Earthbound. Nostalgia is a awesome thing and for someone to take it away from you is a bitter act. Have a great day 😀
Remember the last comment I posted about selling my collection? The good news (other than gettin my life under control) was that I drew the line at some of my SNES favorites. Still have CT with box, ff2/3 with box, and secret of evermore. I did sell Earthbound though, huge mistake.
Ahhhh Rhino games in Kennesaw. I used to go there all the time. It's too bad Gamestop killed them and gutted the business. That store is still there, but is a Gamestop now. The rarest ones I have are several of what you had -Chrono Trigger -Mario RPG -Final Fantasy But I also have a copy of Pocky & Rocky that I picked up from a Trade n Play off Barrett Parkway for $10 in the early 00s that I managed to hold onto. That one I'll never let go.
It's such a small world that we both grew up in the same area - I remember it being such a treat when my mother would drive us up to Barrett Parkway and go to Town Center Mall, it was like a 30 minute trek and it was so nice to get out of the boonies. LOL
I don't have my SNES games anymore. My SNES broke. Like... BROKE broke. My family did not take care of things as well as you did. A friend of mine got into a relationship with a nice woman who was raising just the most well mannered, articulate 7 year old kid. The woman had her vintage SNES hooked up to a TV in the main room when the family went over for a get together. I just had to give my old games to them. I had games, she had the console; it just made sense! There was some overlap, but I had a good amount she didn't. The next time I saw her and her kid, like a month later, the first thing that happened when I arrived was the kid thanking me for all the games. My heart melted. So... I don't regret giving them away. The collection wasn't too big, but I had a lot of the big names; Chrono Trigger, FF6, Megaman X, etc. I actually had a copy of Robotrek, too! That certainly is a hidden gem, building and customizing your own party of robot fighters. Ever play Uniracers? A 2D side-scrolling racing game where you play an animate unicycle and perform stunts to gain bursts of speed depending on how sick it was. I think there were only like 100k copies made due to Pixar suing them or something (the unicycles looked and moved a lot like that lamp in Pixar logos). The 7th Saga, though I only beat it twice (Esuna and Lux, but I got pretty far as Lejes). As an Enix fan, I'm assuming you know about Paladin's Quest. I'd probably call that my favorite Enix game just for how bizarre the setting is. How you make a planet feel lush and vibrant with hardly a lick of green (weird mountainous rock formations were green, but I can't recall many other instances) in the color palette isn't something I would've come up with, but this game made all the blues and pastels work. Man... the nostalgia really hits with this one. SNES is my second favorite console (PS1 wins that honor) from a time where my life was much simpler and the only thing I had to worry about was doing homework and getting through the slog of sunday church. I guess I took for granted how good I had it compared to what you went through. Parts of my family may be intolerant, but they never cut me off. Though... I'm not gay, so I don't know if that would change anything. Props to you for surviving that environment.
Thanks for sharing your SNES most valuable games! I loved to see 7th Saga and Zelda there, played so many hours on both of those. I was trying to beat 7th Saga with each character solo but it is super difficult for some of the fighter characters. I own 7th Saga, Zelda, and Chrono Trigger from this list and also have FFIII. I rented but didn't own Chrono Trigger as a child, then got my dad to buy it off eBay for me when I was in high school for about $50. I have a map and manual for that one, but all of my other SNES games are loose.
Oh man I love the snes. It was first console and what started my video game addiction! Enjoyed listening to your list amd feeling nostalgic over titles like super mario rpg and kirby super star. Super mario rpg was my first ever rpg and it was a revelation to me! I think my rarest snes titles are megaman x3, megaman 7, and chrono trigger.
When i owned SNES i only play 2 Rpg's game which is Final Fantasy 2 & 3. It's a shame i missed Chrono Trigger. My favorite SNES game that i own is Fighting Games like Dragon Ball and Yuyu Hakusho series
Great video, David! I'm sure you already know this, but if you want to clean up some of those carts with sticker gunk, there's a product called "Goo Gone" that works WONDERS. It also won't negatively affect the plastic. Have a great day!
My rare and most valuable SNES games... uh... well I have none. But it's so cool to see all the neat games that truthfully I didn't know existed. Enix seemed like the name stood for quality games for sure. If Dragon Warrior is any testament to that. Collecting is so much fun. Thanks for sharing!!! (I just noticed that my badge is Rydia now yay!)
The SNES was long past my time so I've never owned a game for it. I've picked up some remakes for the DS (Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, etc.) but that's about it.
Hey David, I was never in a situation where I had to sell my games but then again I just got started. But one of my most memorable and most rarest game would have to be Chrono Trigger. I got it for $100 with the two posters! But it wasn't only because of the game itself but also because of the adventure it took me on to obtain it, which was a total of 5hrs of public transportation. I was going through hard times with family, financially unstable at the time, and when I finally got home and herd the music, I chocked up. My point is, life is too short so remember to always enjoy your adventure when getting those games (back). Take care and God Bless. Subscribed!
There was a limited edition Gold Pack-edition of Link to the Past that was exclusive in Sweden, it had a guide with it and it's been sold for over 50 000 SEK, which is basically around $5000.
great games and jealous of a few. my top 10 is currently.hagane, dracula x,chrono, swat cats, batman, adventure island 2,king of dragon, sunset riders, run sabre, turtles 4. very happy to have them. cool vid
Good collection still! Top notch games all around. Glad to see some love for Secret of Evermore. Love that game and the soundtrack is terrific. Did you know it was the first game with the music composed by Jeremy Soule, who would eventually become a legend game music composer, including the Elder Scrolls games? It's so atmospheric.
Since I've been trimming back my collection,1,500+ games I just sold my copy of Mario RPG for $200 and my complete Chrono Trigger for $500. Since I have Chrono Trigger on both the PS1 and the DS I didn't feel bad selling it off. Love Enix games,Actraiser was the first SNES game I got when it first came out. But nostalgia only goes so far. All the money I'm making from selling stuff I've collected over the last 40 or more years, sold Keio Flying Squadron for $5,000,goes to a savings account for my brother and niece. Sadly you never know what could happen at anytime, one of our friends had brain cancer at the age of 40, and at least this way something is there in case I'm not.
Every time you bust out a north Georgia location I get whiplash, like wow! That's so close to me! Haha. Sorry about your rough early 2000s David! While I didn't have a life situation like that, my oldest brother owned all of the NES and SNES games, and a time came where he moved out, and he said, "I'll be back for my games." And one day he took away all his games for the SNES. The NES was deemed too damaged to travel/he didn't have the space. I've slowly been buying my favorites online over the years. So far I've amassed: The 7th Saga Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals Super Mario RPG A jank reproduction cart of Chrono Trigger(it works, it just fits in the SNES weird) Super Mario World Super Mario All Stars Lufia and the Fortress of Doom Wanderers from Ys III Donkey Kong Country Breath of Fire II Final Fantasy III(VI) Final Fight Street Fighter II Turbo The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Hey David, sounds like you're from down the road from me, I was born and raised in Marietta. Actually didn't know we use to have Rhino Games in Kennesaw. Also I picked up Robotrek about a year ago too, for only $15. Got lucky. Store had it priced like that even tho it's worth much more! Keep up the great work!
I never owned an RPG on my SNES when I had it. First RPG I ever owned, was on PlayStation. All the SNES RPGs I own, are actually ports to other systems. We didn't get them in Europe back then.
Nice list! I need to track down a couple of these like Robotrek and EVO. Here are my top 10 rarest Snes games. I recommend any that you don’t have. They are all really well done in my opinion. 10. Skyblazer 9. R-Type 3 8. Soul Blazer 7. Mega Man X2 6. Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen 5. Lufia 2 Rise of the Sinistrals 4. Space Mega Force 3. Mega Man X3 2. Earthbound 1. Pocky & Rocky 2 :)
OMG, Robotrek! I remember playing it with my cousing, and we had a blast! We loved the vilains, what was his name again? Blackmore? :-D I'd probably play it again, were it to show up in the SNES collection on Switch. Great video, David, thanks for making me remember :-)
Hey gaming brother from another mother;)...its actually nice to hear similar pains David- I was once ADDICTED to opiates & depleted my collection a few years ago. I've Ironically, just today I ordered chrono trigger U.S. version shipping from HongKong🤔, secret of evermore-40$- 7th Saga for 90$ is my "first time owning box, instr., & map for any SNES game🤙 None the less a great reminder we are fortunate enough to rebuild in life....kind of like having a couple Phoenix downs in ur pocket
Discovered your channel not too long ago, and so far i've enjoyed every video you put out. Very well thought out content, the calm way you present things makes watching relaxing and enjoyable. Keep up the good work and thank you for what you've put out thus far!
It’s okay. I’m sure we’ve all sold our games at some point. I recently bought EVO Search for Eden locally and it is in good condition. I also have EarthBound, Super Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy II & III. I also have Secret of Evermore, but I haven’t really played it. I also have Chrono Trigger coming. I sold my older copy of Chrono Trigger just a few months before the prices went way up.
Collecting for the SNES is insanely expensive nowadays as almost as pricey as the Saturn... And im only collecting JRPGs. But holy shit, mad respect to your collection there.
When I was a kid, my local game rental place was shutting down and was selling Earthbound (in the box) for 5 bucks. And I did not buy it and I completely regret it to this day!!
Still have FF 2 & 3, CT, Lufia 1 & 2, LTTP. My regrets are that I threw away all the boxes 20 years ago (oops!) and all the NES games I sold like an idiot (like DQ4 complete in box AAARGH), although I still have a few gems.
I have Chrono Trigger and Earthbound CIB from my childhood. My earthbound box still has the $99 Canadian dollars sticker on it, seemed pricey at the time :D
Oh man, the SNES. The first console I ever got. Still has quite a few of my favorite games! If I'm not mistaken Secret of Mana was the first game I ever played. I love it to bits, even with all the brokenness of hit detection and the like. Most of the games I still have the boxes of, though I can't say they are in mint condition. ;___; Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Lufia II (in Dutch lol, it came in a HUGE, like A4 size, box, with an amazing guide with all maps and stuff. Lost the box though...), Illusion of Gaia (Time in Europe), A Link to the Past, Terranigma. Later, I bought (without the boxes) a NTSC version of Chrono Trigger and Soul Blazer and the European Castlevania IV and Super Metroid. You know what's funny? I once got Terranigma from my neighbours when it was my birthday (I was 10 I think?) and I traded it for Secret of Evermore later lol. Rebought Terranigma like a year later once I had the money and boy am I glad I did. Terranigma is definitely my most favorite game on the system though I gotta admit most of the others I mentioned here are so good it's hard to make a list. Roughly a year ago, I went on etsy to buy reprints of boxes of some of the games because I couldn't bear to watch them be unboxed. It's not the same as the real box, but it looks clean af. :)
My wife's rarest SNES game is Pocky and Rocky 2. I sympathize with you. My family split apart and I lost all my SNES and NES games and rare SNES and game combo 😔. All I have now is the system and games that my wife had growing up.
I commiserate with you, I’ve had to sell games during a tough time and still trying to replace some of them. Really sucks! Hope you can get the rest back at good deals!
Most kids these days wouldn't understand how happy we were when we put in the game cartridge and turned on the system and the game ACTUALLY STARTED. No flashy screens, no distortions, just the game.
The SNES was the best system everything still holds up so well, I love my PS1 just as much but man those games did not age well, graphics, load times etc. But holy cow did the SNES have the best library. I started typing out my favorite games and realized it would be 20+ haha. Some of my prized SNES games are FF 2 and 3 complete, super metroid complete, chrono trigger, earthbound. Thankfully me and my siblings never sold our favorites from our collection.
I love those games, all of them. And I think I'll still see how I get them, some even CIB. But man, I really hate how expensive some of those are, especially EVO.
This makes me so sad. I too had a collection, but I was an idiot. I would throw away the box, and sometimes the instruction manual. My mother gave me a Tupperware plastic rectangle bowl to keep my games in. Have no idea what happened to all of them or the console itself. It is definitely my biggest regret gaming wise.
David, an idea for a new series: I thought your old RPG Maker game was very interesting. I would like to see a long series where you hop into a modern version of RPG Maker and rebuild your game from the ground up, keeping old stuff that you like and updating/modernizing stuff that you don't. Split it into 20 min chunks on RU-vid and I'll watch the whole thing. Cheers. P.S. Goo Gone
I bought Chrono Trigger bfand new in 1995. I had to sell it about 15 years later but kept the box and manual. I did buy it again a couple of years later.
I know all about trading my collection. I had to get rid of my xenosaga 3 with the hologram cover. My mom had cancer and we needed money and had to sell my whole collection I have only been able to get my os3 and ps2 games half back by now. But I sold everything and understand it sucks so mad but sometimes you have too. I was able to get Zeno 3 again cheap but no hologram cover that has eluded me . When tou said that I get it . Thanks for sharing.
I wish I had the foresight to keep all my original SNES games. I rebought a bunch from my old collection and had to deal with a dozen or so that had some dingus writing on the cartridge with a Sharpie...
Weird facts of life when I was a kid I bought earthbound complete in box at Walmart for like twenty bucks god I wish I still had that copy part of the reason I got the SNES classic was because of earthbound
Glad you’re part of team S.N.E.S. and not team “Sness” lol. Also, great blast from the past, I used to love Rhino Video Games, had a few of them in Gainesville when I was in school at UF 20+ years ago.
Ugh, I can only imagine what it must have felt like to sell those games, especially since you probably sold them for pennies on the dollar compared to what they're going for today... I do know how it feels to give up a game collection though. I was only a kid at the time so they weren't really 'mine', but I lost my SNES, NES, and Sega Genesis along with all of the games for each due to some family troubles. I haven't made it to a point where I'd be able to repurchase any of them like you have, but I'm thankful for the ones that've been made available digitally on newer systems. A lot are still lost to me, though...mostly terrible games but I still liked them as a kid who didn't know any better!
When I was 10-11 yrs My brother lost almost all my childhood GameCube games when he took my GameCube branded disk folder thing and LOST IT.... I had some good shit in there too Zelda Collection, Pokémon DX, My childhood Wind Waker, Pikmin 2, I had to recollect some of them but other went through the roof...
Damn I didn't realize Chrono Trigger was worth so much. It's my favorite game of all time. I have the cartridge, but never had the box cuz my friend gave it to me because it was his brother's who didn't want it anymore.
I’m so sorry you went through such hard times but I’m happy for you that you pulled through it! I know how hard it is to rebuild your collection. I’ve lost everything I own on 2 occasions and have tried to get some things back. I never had an snes when I was younger. I had to choose between genesis and snes so I went with genesis, which I am glad I had shining force on it. I watched a friend play Zelda and actraiser on it. He loaned me his console with final fantasy 2 (which opened my eyes to jrpg and the series I am now a final fantasy super fan) and Demons Crest. Both are games I love to this day. Those 2 games alone were enough to make me wish I chose an snes over the genesis . Good luck on finding everything you lost and getting it back, at reasonable prices 😄
It's a bit weird to me that Kirby Super Star has gotten kind of expensive, the game has been rereleased on almost every Nintendo platform since the Wii and is playable for free if you have a Switch online subscription. Sadly, I don't have a whole lot of RPGs for Super NES. I got into RPGs real big on the PSone, so the SNES RPGs I have are ones I went back to try later. I also kick myself because, as a kid, I loaned my Mario RPG to someone and they let me borrow Final Fantasy VI... and then they lost the game and just told me to keep FFVI. Then, the FFVI cart started having a problem with the save battery (it was a 1.0 release, with the Relm Sketch bug) and another friend said he knew how to change the save battery, so I lent it to him... and another one of his "friends" ended up stealing it (and a bunch of his other games). At the time, I did have FFVI on PSone, and of course now I have both Mario RPG and FFVI on Wii and the SNES Classic mini console, but I still wish I had at least one of those carts
I know how it is. Through tough times you gotta get cash however you can. I sold, traded away or gave away all my physical stuff(games, music, movie, comic, anime, manga collections). thank god for roms lol
This was great! Do you have any RPGs that were originally Japan only for the SNES that were translated into English? If so, I would like to see that collection as well! 😊
I know how you feel about having to sell childhood games and then having to rebuy them (one by one) at cost or at a much higher cost. THANKFULLY, I still have ALL of my Nintendo 64 and up games and consoles CIB.
I have Lufia 2 complete in the box with manual and everything, but I'm not sure if it was brand new or just carefully preserved, got it from a local store that had it on display. Most I ever paid for one of my video games, I know that much. If it's not that, it's probably Super Mario RPG, but that's loose and no packaging, so I doubt it would be more valuable than the former.
