I'm pretty sure the only reason he left off Bubba Hotep and Natural Born Killers is because he couldn't bare to have them too far away from his player to be able to shoot the video.
I was hoping Barbarella would make your list - damn it surprised me. Fun film and so beautiful set wise with those colors. 65 gets hate undeserved. I don’t think many people realize what the film was trying to convey about earth history. Great list as usual my man. Looking forward to what 2024 brings us in 4k.
Can't say I watched as many 4Ks that were actually released in 2023 last year, but some stand outs to me (sort in order starting with my most favorite) would be City of the Living Dead from Cauldron, To Live and Die in L.A. from Kino Lorber, Invaders From Mars from Ignite, (after viewing the feature on the restoration process and looking up more about the state of the film's elements, this becomes even more impressive), I Still Know What You Did Last Summer from Sony, and I have a soft spot for this sequel, and Acción Mutante from Severin. I have had the From Beyond 4K for months but have yet to watch it, your review bumps it up in my watchlist now!
Great List! “65,” would have made my top ten of the year for sure, great sci-fi, great picture and sound. “Dragon Slayer” was Epic! Vinegar Syndrome really delivered on “Showgirls”…love that disc set. Looks great displayed next to the “Roadhouse” Release! It’s funny you ranked “Barbarella” so high as I literally just picked that one up on a heavy discount from Amazon today for $29.99. Your review of that title really sold me as I’ve always had a soft spot for that film. What a great collectable. Thanks for another great video, and everything you put into your channel, much appreciated. Cheers!
Cemetery Man 4K was #1 for me. After years of mediocre DVD and Blu-ray releases, it finally got a definitive release from Severin. It is a bit pricey, but in addition to an excellent 4K transfer of the film, you get some great extras, the soundtrack on CD, and a pretty nice book.
Hi there Thank you for this great update, it’s great to see your personal top 15 4K movies. I do have a Blu-ray steel book collection also some 4K films. My personal favourite film to date has to be the Swedish movie from 2008 . ( LET THE RIGHT ONE IN ). I would love to see that in 4K. I do own a few steel book Blu-ray numbered versions of this film and would like to see it in 4k at some point. I have heard of the warriors but maybe only seen it once as it’s quite an old film. Nevertheless I will have to check it out on its new format. It reminds me of the film (THE WANDERERS) I bet that would look great in 4K also. That is another one of my most favourite films, even if it is pretty old now.
Picking the best is hard to do with 4K. I haven't done my list yet since I am still going through my 2023 additions. In total, I only got 57 tiles released last year. So I missed out on a lot of big releases that others have gotten. I agree about leaning towards restorations. But at the same time we can't deny how good some new movies can look and need to be recommended to show off a home theater system.
Ken,this was great! When you said you were doing 15, FIFTEEN! I couldn't believe it. You're a rule breaker, that's whyyou're one of the best. I don't get the hate for 65, I liked it, it was a fine picture. I really enjoy how much love you gave to Thelma and Louise. That's probably one of my favorites as well. Watching the 4k, I really felt like it was seeing it again for the first time. I've seen the movie a lot too as a kid. I wasn't sure if I was gonna cry at the end like I used to as a kid, but I sure did. I was a little upset with the scream factory releases this year. Mostly because I bought things like Silver Bullet and Night of the Comet on Blu ray the previous year, so when I saw the 4k releases my Juices were LEss than Flowing. I still probably going to get both. Night of the Comet is one of my favorites so I have to own the 4k. The first half used to scare me so much as a kid. Silver Bullet I'm gonna have to cop too because it's just one of the best werewolf movies. Good list! I may have to check out Barbarella. I've never seen it, but you've given it such high praise.
Great list! I want to check more of these out now. I put SF's My Bloody Valentine 4K in my Top 10 maybe 5 - they matched the reinstated gore scenes so well.
I don’t envy you at all Ken, in 2023 as far as 4K releases I purchased over 200 titles and bout 80% was boutique releases, but I agree with the majority of the titles you mentioned. 2023 was a strong year for 4K releases. Let’s see what 2024 brings us!
Just wanted to correct you that Oppenheimer does indeed feature HDR. It is spectacular in HDR. Nolan doesn’t like immersive audio (like atmos), but he’s got no beef with HDR 😂
It does have HDR, but the HDR version is just the SDR version with a brightness increase, so it’s still clear that Nolan doesn’t like HDR. At least, not anymore. His earliest 4Ks certainly took full advantage of HDR, unlike now.
I'm honestly surprised Titanic didn't make this list. The 4k was absolutely stunning and the best that movie has ever looked and it's had A LOT of releases. I dunno, in my honest opinion maybe Titanic should have been where Dragonslayer was. It's not new either, being over 25 years old already
Pretty good list. I agree with a lot of them. My 10 best of the year: 10. Mallrats 9. The Wicker Man 8. The Warriors 7. JFK 6. Cinderella/Snow White (Disney finally does right by their classics) 5. Thelma & Louise 4. Videodrome 3. Oppenheimer 2. The Nightmare Before Christmas 1. Barbarella
Ken, the timing of this video couldn't be any better, I just ordered The Warriors on 4K and Barbarella on 4k on Tuesday because of the Arrow Sale that Barns and Noble are doing, I paid $30 for each box set, Barbarella will be delivered on Friday the 12th and my Warriors set comes in on Monday the 15th, and I am looking forward to watching both of them. Actually The Warriors is a blind buy, I have never seen that film, but I am looking forward to seeing it, Barbarella I have seen a couple of times over the years, but thanks for your top 15, I really appreciate all your time and effort you put into these videos. I will say that City of the Living Dead by Cauldron was one of my favorite releases of 2023, that transfer looked so good..
No love for Bubba Ho…. Oh wait I can’t justify that piece of garbage either. I sold that off day 2. I want Showgirls so bad. I went to order the Hardbox and it Sold out on me. I do plan on getting the standard version because I remember that amazing pool scene all to well 😂
My Top Ten: 1. Ronin 2. JW4 3. Wanted 4. Oppenheimer 5. Dawn of the Dead 6. Point Break 7. JFK/NBK 8. Young Guns 9. Vanilla Sky 10. Sleepy Hollow/Pumpkinhead
I still can't believe you haven't upgrade to a surround system. With all the money you spend on movies, you NEED a system to get the most out of the movies. I will admit I am not up-to-date with an Atmos system. I am still using a 5.0 system...yes, 5.0...NOT 5.1. I do not have subs. But my Klipsch speakers put out enough bass that subs are not needed. Movies like U-571 will never have the same impact on a soundbar as they would on a full-blown surround system.
The Lighthouse must be beautiful in 4k. But I own the already very good blu ray and I have to save money. I want to be a millionaire just to buy all the blu rays I want to. 😂 12 Angry Men is a very dialog driven film, I think the Criterion edition is just fine.
@bened22 I love the restored classics too and appreciate them more but the home theater experience cannot be denied for releases like prey, avatar wow, or John wick 4. Barbie n oppenheimer could have been replaced for one of those. Still think it follows and Thelma and Louise were better for me than Prey. I haven't seen face off or Warriors new prints yet but I bet they are up there for me.
@midlevelmedia You have too many movies Ken! Kidding! Yeah the movie itself is maybe 7/10 which is amazing compared to most of the garbage that comes out today. Disc is demo worthy though. Time to get that atmos setup...
