Regularly asked question
Q) Why are there comments from days ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons / techmoan usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

@SteelRodentHi MD can record lossless or lossy. It can use 16 bit PCM just like cd, but you cant fit a full album on Hi Md, its 30 or so minutes and you have to turn it on, it isn't the default mode.

Yes, the disks are just cute, and the mech is incredible. Current devices turn on, and that's it. You hit play and a progress bar shows. There's also something nice about making choices you can't change on the fly. Once you recorded your limited 80-minute MD playlist it's set, until you do the effort of recording something again. It just makes that playlist on your cassette/MD/CDR a bit more special, IMO.

@PINAC C.R.A UK The cheapest working player on US EBay is over $100. Most are between $200-$400. That ugly green one he opened in the video is $500. That’s because so few minidisc players were sold here new so not many to choose from secondhand. There are tons of Japanese sellers on US EBay cashing in. I had an argument with a friend back when these were new. He spent something like $300 for one, and switched a lot of his music to minidisc. His main point was that it could fit easily in the pocket, but at the time we all wore baggy pants with pockets large enough to hold a CD player anyway. A few years later I bought an iRiver MP3 player which was great, except that it had a noisy hard drive and if you recorded audio on it, after a minute or so you could hear the hard drive spinning up on the recorded audio. I still have some old guitar recordings with that hard drive sound occasionally chiming in. None of us could have predicted smartphones and their capability to kill the market for dedicated portable media playing devices. It was an interesting time, with everyone trying to guess the future and no one being right about it.

In my time with MD players I owned just 3 of them, and a Sony mini HiFi system which incorporated an MD recorder deck, which could record from the radio the CD player or the cassette deck. If you think about it, MiniDisc is the pinnacle of physical home recordable music. No company even has plans for any new physical media for music. MiniDisc is the last one. It combines near CD quality music with the most advanced miniaturization and the ease of recording to a cassette.

I love the MD format. To me, it is the perfect way to archive vinyl straight from the turntable becsuse of the ease of editing and the format is just right since the medium of vinyl is inherently lossy anyways. I bet I have about 500 mds with material....most with titles that are not available digitally.

You're right about Sanrio being behind the Hello Kitty tat, I recall last year playing Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp during a Sanrio Special Event, and even though I have nothing at all to do with the Hello Kitty franchise, I can't help but wonder if there were Hello Kitty and Pompompurin MD players as well. That was fun. It inspired me to get my JA333ES out of the loft. I’d forgotten what a tank it is. Quality build from Sony. I recorded a ton of Proms and jazz on radio 3 onto TDK studio discs and am having fun playing through them. Some of them were recorded from the Sony ST-777ES DAB radio via the optical port and some from my Quad FM4. You can tell the difference

Just an quick update on this. After a couple of days playing the unit developed a fault in that the drawer wouldn’t open. A quick search on google suggested that the drawer pulley belt needed replacement. I thought that is was the end as I didn’t think the part would be available. I found the service manual online and got the part number and was amazed to find I could still get it. The belt cost £6 including postage. It arrived next day and after a bit of open case surgery it did the trick and I am now enjoying my discs again.

I used to use MD for a backup of DAT recordings for film & TV. I loved the tiny format and the ability to get a second copy made with such a small and light piece of gear. Truth is, however, I never used the backups for anything, they weren't really broadcast standard, but could theoretically have been used in a pinch. I will never get rid of my MD recorder, though, it's still such a wonderful piece of gear, though everything is straight to drive recording now.

MDs were just a cool piece of tech wrapped up in a tiny package. Im still really sad that they never properly caught on over on my side of the pond... friend of mine stationed in Japan sent me one (a sharp MD, identical to the one you show about 12 minutes in). I couldnt do anything with it because nowhere nearby (in Arkansas) had any minidiscs on the shelf. Finally on a trip to Dallas, I picked up a trio of 3 packs, and set about filling them up with music. I got more later on and used it extensively... and thanks to their record function, I used them to record my private music lessons in college. I missed the MP3 player craze and used my MD player until I started loading my iPhone 4 with music. Even now I'll go back and give my MDs a listen and constantly surprise myself what made it on the MDs ("wow, I was already listening to that by then?")
