Great list! My personal no 1 would be bird with the crystal plumage but that's just imo, gave me a couple great flicks to check out I haven't seen yet, thanks for not spoiling the endings!
Can't blame you for your number one pick. That is probably the most important giallo film ever made. I really hate it when people talk about films I don't know and spoil endings with no warning.
I thought Alice Sweet Alice would be on your list it’s bordering “giallo-esqe” to American giallo. I love the movie and if I had a list it would be on it. Great list man! As soon as you start off your list with #25 - My Dear Killer I knew this was going to be a real list.
I did like Alice Sweet Alice. Not sure why I didn't put it on my list at all. I still don't think it makes it for my top 25, but wouldn't be much after that. Glad you enjoyed my list. I love me some giallo.
Carlin .. good list. However, I found it interesting that your list didn't include Argento classics like Phenomena (I rank this over Deep Red), Suspiria and Inferno (these two are part of his "Three mother's Trilogy"). I stumbled onto your channel and so far, been loving the content. Keep up the great work. Liked and Sub-d.
I don't view Suspiria and Inferno as giallo films, but rather witch films. I do like Phenomena, but it just didn't make the cut for me. Thank you for the support!
Great video. I love gialli! And I love to watch videos about the films. Thanks for your work. chronologically my favs: Blood and Black Lace 1964 A Quiet Place in the Country 1968 The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 1970 The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion 1970 Hatchet for the Honeymoon 1970 The Weekend Murders 1970 In the Eye of the Hurricane 1971 The Cat o’ Nine Tails 1971 The Double 1971 The Bloodstained Butterfly 1971 The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh 1971 The Black Belly of the Tarantula 1971 A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin 1971 Short Night of Glass Dolls 1971 Death Walks on High Heels 1971 Death Walks at Midnight 1972 Eye in the Labyrinth 1972 The Weapon, the Hour, the Motive 1972 Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key 1972 Torso 1973 Spasmo 1974 The Perfume of the Lady in Black 1974 The Suspicious Death of a Minor 1975 Deep Red 1975 Plot of Fear 1976 The House of the Laughing Windows 1976 The Psychic 1977 The Pyjama Girl Case 1977 Hotel Fear 1978 Tenebre 1982 Mystère 1983
I can say you introduced me in the giallo genre, with my favorite 2 being 1. Don't torture a Duckling 2. I can't remember the name of this one. It involves a man (reporter perhaps) who goes to the countryside and stays at an "Inn." Part of the film includes someone hiding a car in the bushes. a scene where a boy is in a row boat on a lake at the end of the film, this same boy watches as the man and woman drives away A couple's car breaks down on the way to the "Inn." If you know the name of the film, let me know. I found this list. I never thought much about American Giallo films. I found it here "Taste of Cinema - Movie Reviews and Classic Movie Lists" *The 10 Best American Giallo Films of All Time* 10. Happy Birthday To Me (J. Lee Thompson, 1981) 9. Cruising (William Friedkin, 1980) 8. Friday the 13th 1980 7. Basic Instinct 1992 6. The Eyes of Laura Mars 1978 5. Klute 1971 4. Body Double (Brian DePalma, 1984) 3. The Editor 2014 2. Alice Sweet Alice 1976 1. Dressed to Kill (Brian DePalma, 1980)
It is funny hearing your list because it makes me recall some of the ones you dislike are some of my favourites that I have re-watched several times. Two examples that come to mind are the 5th Cord and the Red Queen Kills Seven Times. But others that I have a mad love for include 5 Dolls for an August Moon, Delirium the 1987 version, The Killer Arranged Nine Seats. I have three other Argento films that would have made my top 25. I am surprised by the absence of Torso.
I do still like The Fifth Cord and The Red Queen Kills Seven Times. Those are ones that got better as I let them sit in my head. I've been wanting to rewatch them. So many people love Torso and although I like it, it just doesn't strike me the way it does others. It's excessively slow for me.
@@CarlinCook , I truly appreciate the reappraisal you have done with those two movies. Although I never took it personally, I was confused why they received initially such low reviews because for some reason those two movies stuck out. Especially the Red Queen Kills Seven Times; that movi after watching it, gave me a nightmare because I could not get the screaming laughter of the killer out of my thoughts. I also thought it was interesting that The Editor was not on your list. I know it is a pastiche of the genre, but in my opinion it is better than many of the lesser known gialli. I agree with your feelings regarding Torso. The only thing I really enjoyed about the film was the fact that it has a strong mystery element. However to me, the film seems more like a slasher. And I know that I may be incorrect because I have difficulty in determining what makes a slasher different than a giallo beyond the simple fact of where it was filmed.
@@khambrelgreen the laughter is pretty unsettling in that film. The lines between slasher and giallo do get blurred a lot, especially since slashers were inspired by giallo.
Thank you for putting this list together. I have recently discovered Giallo and im building my collection. The problem was tring to find good ones but not having them spoiled by a review. Nice!
As a fellow giallo lover, I really appreciate this list. I've seen most of the Argento films on here and the rest I've either seen or have on my to watch list. One movie that I have on my list is The Fourth Victim which I discovered last year. It's a wild ride of a movie that twists and turns and is well worth checking out. I would definitely be interested in your bottom list. Safe to say you and I agree on a lot of movies and it would be helpful to know what can be pushed down my watchlist
One I am really surprised that's not on your list at all is "Your Vice is a Locked Room and only I have the Key." That's in my top tier Giallos. It's one of the absolute best!
A lot of people love that film and I enjoyed it, but it just doesn't make my top 25. I just checked and in my ranked list I have it at 46. There's just a lot of good giallo and gialloesque stuff.
Edwige Fenech is a goddess. I remember watching that movie during the Giallo marathon watch party. I also fell in love with her. Such a great movie as well.
Great list. I've seen a few of them, and I think most are on my to see list. I need to go back and listen to your video again to check all the titles to be sure...
I’ve only seen 30 Gialli but in a relatively short period of time. I always come here after watching as your reviews really are complete and I love the way you analyze the films. My favorites so far ( but I really like most) are Puzzle, A Bay of Blood, strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, Case of the Scorpions tail, Your Vice is a locked room, Tenebre and The Card Player. I just love Giallo. I’m addicted and watch 1 movie a night. I didn’t like Hachett for a Honeymoon though. Probably my only disagreement with you! 😄
I really appreciate that you watch my reviews after watching giallo. Thank you. Hatchet For The Honeymoon doesn't get a ton of love, but for some reason I loved it.
Thanks for all you work on your channel! and I LOVE GIALLO's : Great picks but I definitely would put The New York Ripper in my top 10. Argento is my Favourite Giallo director.
A great list they're all there or almost all, some of the bottom ones here are on my top end like Spasmo or Cat O'Nine Tails but we agree on #1, high for me are also Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh and Case of the Scorpion's Tail. It's unfortunate how My Dear Killer doesn't have the English dub on the Blu-ray, very odd and disappointing.
I like your top 10. I just saw Eye in the Labyrinth. It is unfortunate Rosemary Dexter was not in more movies. I liked her a lot in this. Top 25 for sure for me. Glad to see the better Fulci and Bava ones in the top 10 as well for you. I don’t rate A Blade in the Dark or Stage Fright. It is not Soavi himself as I really liked The Church. I find Stage Fright as much a slasher (escaped psycho who knocks off dimwits one by one as anything else. Definitely popcorn movies but better ones are available in horror. I am a little surprised you did not include Torso or The New York Ripper which seem to get included on a lot of horror fans lists who like giallo. As for me 1. Deep Red 2. Short Night of Glass Dolls 3. The Fifth Cord 4. Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh 5. Lizard in A Woman’s Skin 6. Hatchet for the Honeymoon 7. Torso 8.Tenebre 9. The Red Queen Kills Seven Times 10. Bird with the Crystal Plumage I also have not seen The House With the Laughing Windows though it is on my list.
