Last week I threw some left over gouache paint on a sketchbook page because I didn't want to just let it dry. Such a good decision!! I just did random shapes and lines, but now that the page is already "messed up," I can draw and doodle whatever on top of it without worrying about what it looks like. Filled the page with cute and ugly sketches and I didn't worry about it!

1) a mechanical pencil, preferably with 0.7 lead 2) Water-based markers, I really like the Koi brush pens but I only have a few of them! 3) A super thin liner (my favorite is the Pilot G-Tec-C4!!!) 4) Zebra mildliners are. simply divine. chefs kiss 5) soft colored pencils like prismacolor!

I usually use alcohol markers and colored pencils, but I recently purchased a set of oil pastels just for fun and they are actually really amazing and fun to layer. I try to be a perfectionist with my art and these force you to go outside those boundaries which I’m having fun with :)

Actually you can revive brushes covered in dried acrylics with nail polish remover ^^ I have this beautiful oval brush that got covered in it and was useless for over 6 months! Then I got some acetone (polish remover) and it dissolved and was good as new :3

Hey again, always glad to see you posting on here. A relevant bit about solvents: If acrylic paint dries in a synthetic brush, before you toss it out, try denatured alcohol to dissolve the acrylic paint. (May be known as "mineral spirits" where you are.) Denatured alcohol is murder on a natural hair watercolor brush, but it may save your good synthetic brushes, especially if you are at the point of no return and are going to throw them out anyway. If the acrylic paint has "cured" a long time, results may vary. But most often, denature alcohol can cut thru the latex in acrylic paint. Acetone will also work, but breathing the vapor is REALLY BAD for your internal organs so if you use acetone, do it outside in a hurricane or maybe in a wind tunnel, OR with an appropriate gas mask rated for aromatic hydrocarbons. Acetone is also really bad for natural hair brushes, but will get the paint out. Also if you have waterproof ink, and it dries in your brush or other tools, shellac thinner will often dissolve the waterproof inks. If you are going to do art, it pays to learn what solvents will cut thru your various art materials. After going to a zillion life drawing sessions and only having 20 minutes (or so) to draw a whole person, I dropped doing pencil sketching altogether, and leaned to draw directly with a watercolor brush to save time (working in watercolor). I also spent the last bunch of years using pen and ink directly when sketching, forcing myself to "look harder" and draw with more deliberate strokes. But YOU have been inspiring me to use graphite and Col-Erase colored pencils for sketching again, and I am amazed at how much you can fix if you allow yourself to erase. :D I also wanted to mention that Prismacolor has a line of HARD colored pencils called "Verithin". The color choices are limited, but they are good for doing smaller details when the mushy Prismacolor pencils are too soft. Because they are hard, they do burnish the paper surface and can be difficult to erase. But used in conjunction with softer colored pencils they do serve a purpose.

Basically what I use all the time in my sketchbooks is cheap watercolor, ink and water based markers. I've been trying to paint first and then ink it without a sketch underneath (unless I want to add more texture) and just go straight in with the ink pens and markers and it's been going quite well so far :D.
@JelArts
@JelArts 3 года назад
Ooo I've been doing something kind of similar! It's pretty fun to explore painting things first and then going over it with ink or something else.

most of our favorite supplies are the same actually. i also do printmaking, but that isn't really a sketchbook thing (i do make some test prints in my sketchbook occasionally but it's still not really sketchbook based except for like design ideas n stuff). watercolor and gouache are my go to supplies; i also mix my white gouache to get thicker paint or as a way to lighten a color without losing pigment. graphite is always great, and i really love water soluble graphite! my colored pencil phases come and go a lot, but i'm currently in a colored pencil phase so i've been using that in my sketchbook and with my watercolors lately. some other supplies i enjoy are my posca pens, copics (but like on a piece of marker paper taped in lol), and regular ole liner pens. mixed media is a must for my sketchbooks bc not only do i love using watercolor, i like to use a lot of water. so my paper has to handle wayyyy too much water lol

I’d say my top five are markers, liners, straight up paper (can I say that? I know you use paper to sketch but I love looking at all types of paper), acrylic paints, and colored pencils. They’re not really in any order those are just five that I like. :)

For me currently I think using Prismacolor’s color pencil, Blick’s 4B pencil, watercolor, marker, and I’m really starting to enjoy using color pens (random). I normally only sketch with a 4B pencil, but idk sketching with interesting colored pens is starting to become fun.

ahhhh I love your purple hair!!! Also the up close sketching was so fun to see. I love all the individual color strokes, your art is very whimsical and fun but it can also be calming too. Hmm as for my go to sketching supplies, I love mechanical pencils!! I usually end up using pilot color enos, but I want to also get back to using more pens and liners, just because it adds a fun pop to things. There's so many fun things to try out honestly, you might as well go a little crazy lol

So legit same for sketching aside from coloured marker pens, I tend to use straight up black fine liners. Simply because I do like to colour everything in my sketchbook and I can never be confident that the colourful stuff wont blend together. I discovered gouache last year and it's one of my fave things to work with now, so versatile! I know you weren't a huge fan when you got them, but I also like to work with graphite watercolours in my sketchbook, because once you get used to consistency, I actually find them quite forgiving to use (being able to watercolour-lift them AND erase them) and useful for doing a quick wash of tones. I love love love how colourful your work is though, and I was so happy to see we use so many of the same supplies.

Man this video inspires me to use my sketchbook more! I normally, mainly, create digital art, but it's nice to grab those traditional tools once in a while. As far as I remember I mainly used colored pencil for a base sketch and then use a mechanical graphite pencil on top to flesh it out. Then I would often decorate those sketch with different supplies. Sometimes I'd use watercolors or watercolor pencils, other times markers and once I even used gouache (that was really fun, should use it again). Maybe I should try to mix and combine them all like you do, that looks really good and fun to do

Tbh I've wanted to branch out forever, but I'm a shut-in and I pretty much live on my bed, so... I just use the same supplies all the time. Just mechanical pencil, black fine liner pens, watercolors and a water brush, and a white posca pen for highlights. Sometimes I might use metallic gel pens as well but that's rare.
@alexej6080
@alexej6080 3 года назад
For my sketchbook it's mostly soluble graphite pencils (graphitint by Derwent), brush pens filled with ink, fineliners, ecoline and waterbased markers for kids, and watercolour pencils. Cool thing to do with those waterbased markers is you can take a waterbrush to them and make it look like watercolour, or use the marker on something plastic and pick up the pigment with your brush from there. It's really fun!
@languageandhobbies

Thanks for the recommendations. I haven't tried them yet myself, but if you want a hard, sharp-point Prismacolor for outlining, they have the Prismacolor Verithin in a few dozen of the same colors as the soft-core Prismacolors. For some reason while the 24-pack contains all of the 12-pack, the 36 pack is missing indigo blue and process red (pale magenta). And process red isn't available as open stock where I've looked. So now they're making me have to choose which ones I think I'd actually use instead of just grabbing a fairly inexpensive complete set.

I think I have a problem with art supplies, I have a lot. So many art supplies that I'm missing space to work while having them handy and I feel like I can't use all of them and I'm either using just one and not the rest or struggling to decide which to use each time. I wish I had bought just one good watercolor pallette and one brand of nice paper and like, one fineliner that I like and that's it.

I've been in an art block lately and been wanting to get into more mixed-media type art, so this is perfect! Tip - if you have white gouache and mix in some watercolour, you can create pastel gouache shades, it isn't perfect gouache but if you have limited money or space it can be useful, I've used it for a few pieces in my sketchbook when I want a splash of a more opaque colour but only have limited supplies!
@jimbosmith5863
@jimbosmith5863 3 года назад
I do a lot of mixed media stuff too! I use essentially the same as you but I also use ink a lot (brush pens usually). Lately I've been really loving putting ink and especially graphite over gouache. The shininess of the graphite really shows and you can add more texture, and the ink can allow for really dark areas that gouache sometimes cant do on it's own. I really liked this video! It inspired me to draw, and to lean into the mixed media messiness more than I let myself sometimes.

It is interesting to learn from other artist on how they sketch and what they use for sketching. I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but, lately I've been sketching with ballpoint pens (in different colors, cause it's fun) ballpoint pen is great for me, because it has a very pencil feel like, if I put pressure then more inks comes out and less pressure then the lighter it is, the biggest difference of sketching with a ballpoint pen is that, it's permanent! And for me it kinda pushes me to just let a mistake happen and hope to fix that mistake next time I sketch, I also use technical pens (microns, also in different colors 😁)
