“To know someone here or there with whom you can feel there is understanding in spite of distances or thoughts expressed… That can make life a garden.” -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Welcome! Today is such a fun video! I was talking to my friend Jenny from Harmony Hills Home and Garden RU-vid the other day about, what else, gardening! We were talking about our favorite plants in each of our differing climates and thought doing a video that focused on our top 5 favorites would be fun so we can all see the differences between a zone 9B garden (mine) and a zone 7 garden (hers!) After watching my video, make sure you guys check out her RU-vid channel to see all her top plants in her zone! (Link below!) 😊 Enjoy!

I searched up “flowers for 9b” and this came up-I immediately subscribed when you said you’re in NorCal too! It’s hard when I get sucked into a video only to realize they’re in a totally different part of the world. Looking forward to more videos from you 🥰‼️

I just did the same! 😂 Not in California, but my new home is being built in 9b/10a in France and I am searching for all the gardening channels I can find that will help me plan for my future balcony garden. 😊 Limited space and south facing means I need to plan really well.

I was so excited to see Supertunia Bubblegums on your list! I’m also in zone 9 and I’m about to plant 24 pots of Bubblegums in my 2 front garden beds. The bubblegums have gotten so popular these days, I almost feel like a true gardener would kind of scoff at your garden if they saw a bunch of bubble gums, lol! I really went back-and-forth a lot this spring when choosing which Supertunia I was going to highlight in my garden this year. Last year I did the Vista snowdrifts, first time gardener, first garden beds ever, and I felt like a winner! Just like you said, it gave me such a boost of confidence and I felt like wow, maybe I do have a green thumb, ha ha! Every single one of my neighbors asked me what exact flower that was so they could go buy it for their garden. They were just so vigorous and beautiful and I think white is such a classic color. It was a beautiful backdrop to my sunshine ligustrum’s and Loropetalums. Loved all the color! But I finally just got to the point where I didn’t really care if everyone had the vista bubblegums. That’s what I wanted to plant and it’s my garden! They just arrived the other day and I’m super excited to get them in the ground. I’m just trying to get the whole irrigation thing worked out first. This is my first year doing the drip irrigation so that’s a whole challenge in itself! Great video! Love to hear about plants that thrive in my zone🌸🌸

Hi! I feel the same way about bubblegums... its like they are "basic." But you know what? They are BEAUTIFUL! Their color can't be beat and they really do perform better than the snowdrift so you are going to be so happy you chose them this year!! I think we just need to embrace the bubblegums popularity! They are popular for a great reason! Enjoy all your blooms! 24 pots, holy moly girl you go all out! 😆

A nice weeping Alaskan cedar dupe for zone 9b would be cupressus cashmeriana, otherwise known as the Bhutan Cypress. It is slightly lighter in color than the weeping Alaskan cedar but it pretty much looks the same! It can grow in zones 9-10

I have two large Salvias you first mentioned and they bloom gorgeous purple year long. I'm in zone 9 in deep south texas so it gets way too scorching hot if in direct sun so we have them on the east side of the house to get only morning to noon sun and shade after. It is still gets enough brightness to continue thriving. Added mulch in it's xl clay pot and water them almost every other day.

So fun to see what you’re favorite plants are! It is cool to compare different zones and what plants do well in each zone. Jenny is a month or two behind your planting season and I’m a could 2-3 months behind Jenny! 😂 I love hydrangeas too, I had a beautiful limelight hydrangea tree. But during the last snow storm earlier this week the snow got to heavy and it split my tree in half 😫 I’ll have to see what it does this spring. It’s right next to my front door so of course it’s what everyone sees as soon as they drive up to the house…half of a tree 🤦‍♀️

Hi sac neighbor! Loved your list. I left my bubblegum tunia alone all winter-it wasnt a pretty site but in feb i saw new growth at base. I cut all the dead off and its already in full bloom. I look forward to how many years it will continue to revive itself. Agree on the salvia! Summer burn destroys my E facing hydrangea's, so i moved it to N facing next to shelter of house-doing great. Last fall i bought summercrush hydrangeas and planted them next to a W facing fence under shade trees-sun till about 11 am. They are doing great! 2 plants i would have added are geraniums (lovely deep green with blooms) and dianthus-they bloom all year! I put in a drip system and this time of year it's on 2x a week for 1 hour. Intense summer over 95 it gets a 3rd run. I also made a topsoil to put at base of all plants, bushes & trees of peat moss, steer manure compost & topsoil. This has made a huge improvement to retaining water, giving nutrients all summer and in general improving the ground. I dont fertilize flowers with weekly products. Cheers

One of my friends has a redwood tree garden and the hydrangeas grow quite perfectly there! She has blooms all summer and into late fall! They do change color. They get to be a blue and then a dark purpke as the season progesses. They start off with green and then the color migrates as the season progresses. It is lovely. :) They accent the redwoods SO well too. I hope you have a great weekend. I will make sure to check out the other channel too1

I went to my local Walter Andersons this past weekend and saw (2) 5 gallon pots of limelights from Proven Winners and almost pulled the trigger and bought them. I thought, "If they are selling them here in our zone, then they must be okay!" But, I know that they typically thrive up to zone 9, so I held back. Any suggestions or feedback is helpful! Proven Winners Bubblegum is a vista Supertunia. PW has several more. They have started offering mini vista Supertunia also that should not be missed. Also Royal Velvet is as vigerous as the vistas but isn't given the name. We are 9b also. My neighbor has a BG in the ground by his driveway that is going on it's third summer. I love the old BG because the plant is big very early. Don't miss Truffula pink gomphrena...... it will winter over also. I try everything they offer.

Can you give me suggestions for a 15 ft long/1 foot wide space along a walkway with partial sun in zone 9b? 😅 I'm constantly struggling with this space. I did have simply Mexican Heather all long the walkway but they got really bad during that catastrophic freeze in TX.

I just bought my first two vista bubblegums, and have a jug of BT and pump sprayer on the shelf so I feel prepared for the bud worms that we get here. I’m zone 9b too, have you or any viewer of same zone had success with this plant in pots? All my ground plants/flowers are on drip so I never have to worry about watering but pots are an entirely different beast in our heat and intense sun. I’d like to hang them in the backyard which faces south and my patio which faces west. Any thoughts or advice, maybe soil/medium recommendations to hold water better?
@DigPlantWaterRepeat
@DigPlantWaterRepeat 2 года назад
Hi Shara! You are definitely prepared! I have planted them lots of times in pots, however I have my pots hooked up on drip as well! They get watered daily with the drip irrigation and were beyond happy! I don't think you should worry about the sun and heat because they LOVE it but just stay on top of the watering in the morning and you should be fine!

Thanks Janey for responding, I know you’re a busy lady- I honestly don’t know how you stay on top of everything. Spring time in our gardens are so busy, which I love all of it BUT I am missing my RU-vid time, I have lots of catch-up viewing my favorite gardening channels. Thanks again!

What is your spring like in 9b? Do you have daffodil, tulip month and then flowering trees or do you just skip ahead to summer?
@DigPlantWaterRepeat
@DigPlantWaterRepeat 2 года назад
Hi Will! We do have a very short spring with daffodils and flowering trees around February. They usually go away very quickly though as it gets hotter! Where I live my last frost date is March 1 so I know after that its time to get out the t-shirts and shorts! Thanks for watching!

Hi Janey! I love this video :) I am in 9B too (Roseville, CA). I have to ask, where do you get the Limelights? We have a great chain of nurseries up here(GreenAcres) but they don't sell them, or many PV plants. I would be willing to drive to Davis to come and get some(and the supertunia vistas).
@DigPlantWaterRepeat

Hi! Thank you so much for watching! I actually have bought all my limelight’s from Green Acres! You have to get to them at the right time which is a bummer but I’m there often and always check what they have! I have purchased some supertunias from Home Depot before but again, just have to keep waiting for them to be available! Its basically like a hunt here in CA for proven winners! 😆 Hope that helps! 💗

Technically they are perennial only in zones 10 and 11, however if we have a mild winter they will winter over here! You can't depend on it but they definitely will last! 💗
