Nice knives. I started with modern knives, then they started looking too similar to each other. Like automobiles of today compared to those in the 1940s and 1950s. When I turned to traditional knives like those from Case, GEC, etc, I was in love with knives again. Those frames, those covers, and 1 to 4 blades in one knife!
I only RECENTLY, began to learn about traditional / slipjoints. I collect all sorts of knives, and I usually avoid slipjoints... But, no more! The more I learn, the more beautiful varieties, materials, and interesting history, I find
My kizer zipslip is the first slipjoint ive carried at work for a couple of years,i didnt expect much from it to be honest but its performed extremely well for me.Razor sharp and edge retention is simply amazing. It just feels like a much more expensive knife than it is👍🏴
Paddy, while you are probably not the only reviewer making the "modern slipjoint" vs modern traditional (oxymoron) 😉 distinction. I'm glad to see you and I share this opinion. I have nearly all of Mikes lionsteel exclusives and Otnat is a definite favorite. My top (5) Modern Slipjoints: 1. JE Made Combustion 2. Chris Reeves Impinda 3. Hinder Slippy (XM18) 4. LS CK Otant 5. Fallkniven LTC (gr)
My only modern slipjoint is a Viper Key designed by Jesper Voxnaes, but I've been thinking my next overall purchase will be a Hinderer slipjoint and you're not changing my mind (that said and however, the Lionsteel otnat looks really enticing)!
Nice set of knives Paddy. Think my current favourite edc slip joint is crkt pilar, just love the forward choil on it. Replace your benchmade, nice knife but that back spring is to soft.
#3 for me is the Lionsteel Gitano for its Spanish Navaja influence and strong locking when opened. Lovely lines and beautiful blade. Your #1 and #2 choices, stay. Once opened, it is neither a traditional or modern slip joint, but a beautiful Italian crafted, Spanish influences joy to look at as well as to handle.
I too loves slip joints and one of the things I like to see on them are a pocket clip I don't like to have a lot of stuff in my pockets. you're five or beautiful knife I hope I can get to that point in my collection one day
I think if you like a knife you will use it and be happy. Modern slip joint like these have the advantage of newer materials and steels. Being able to take them apart is ok however; tiny parts get lost. That happens and getting replacements is a pain. You can clean a traditional one it just takes a little more time. I like the look of the Fox blade shape and the hidden lanyard pin on the Lion and its modern looking blade. The problem with customs is they come and they go like the wind. They all might have great ideas but fighting to get one and their high cost doesn’t make them everyday users. That makes the one that costs less the one I like the best. (Black Fox Coil)
Very entertaining video thus far; sub well-earned! I kind of stepped away from slipjoints besides SAK's in recent years, but the gift of a Spyderco Urban Ivory Damasteel by my gf made me dive right back in :)
@@paddyspotatopeelers2154 Great to be back! Mainly focussed on Spyderco for the past decade, but you're causing a reawakened appreciation for the slipjoints in my collection. Eyeing some new possible purchases because of it :)
I need to do a video of this. Enzo PK70, Zipslip, JE Made, Cellina, and a detent perhaps? I’ve very few modern slipies left that I haven’t sold or given away. Plenty of traditionals though!
I have some TwoSun modern slip joints. They are fine and well made. I also have the Manly Wasp which a good worker. I strongly believe modern slip joints should have a 1/3 stop rather than a 1/2 stop. It's as easy to do and much safer.
That Tuya is just such a stylish detent. I'm so tempted. By the way my Proper clone has a very decent backspring ( actually better than the original) no one shoot me....👍
My proper is the clip blade and the backspring is ok. Not strong or heavy but positive. I've cut a lot of zip ties filled umpteen kerb side recycling boxes with cardboard and its never failed on me yet.
I really rate the Byrd Tern because it allows a full grip yet is very small and light. Currently carrying the Ruike L11 for work which I also love but is not UK legal at 85mm 😒
Hi, do you own the lionsteel Bestman ? I live in France and it's illegal to go out with any knife there. Slipjoint are most of the time tolerated tho. I bought the Bestman 2 with ebony wood to "replace" my spydercos outside, and it's really great ! The slipjoint action is really good, midstop, there is even a blade stop on the closing.
That Bolus looks lovely, looking forward to your review, any news on the Tuya's availability? It's close call as I'm not to keen on the Proper due to the weak spring but I'd replace either rhe proper or the Fox Ciol as I'm not keen on recurves. Great upload♥️🔪
I love the way that BlackFox looks. It's a good size too. For some reason I had the impression that the blade steel was 440A, but C is totally fine for me. The thing is, I've spoken with lots of folks that were under the impression that all of the BlackFox knives are made in Italy, and I think it says that in the specs on some sites. Most if not all BlackFox, and FoxEdge knives are made in China. For that reason, I have been hesitant to get it. It's not cheap for what it's made of. Is it worth it?
If have ASP Pepper Spray (refillable) inc. medium-“Key defender”, u.. or better…, then Ya could loose the Bruiser-odd man out (or 2nd in, from the right). *Usually I have SA Rambler; Palm & or Key Defender; and a good e.g. *Lumintop FW1aa (tail cap button too). *Where cowards-opportunists cannot see you, usually will decide to wait until “It’s for fun @ (100%) free”. *There is way less hesitation in using the light &/or ppr spray (& they can believe “oh, he’s shining (or strobe+) the light again”(an ez good spraying of it). U’d be better for the Misses. Even if it “wasn’t successful” , it can really help you+. **reapply as ya make it to safety or safer.
I might be old fashioned but I hate pocket clips, I can’t think of a better way to lose your stuff ! knives, torches, tape measures etc, I have caught them on all sorts of things, and you’ve either got a bent open and useless clip or your knife gets flipped into the brambles ! The right place for a knife is at the bottom of a pocket either trouser or a square jacket pocket like a tweed sports jacket pocket. And don’t start me off about those stupid diagonal semi handwarmer pockets !
I agree on your take about pocket clips. I've had them get caught on a bunch of stuff that yanked them out of my pocket. On the flip side though, I've been under my car a bunch and had my non pocket clipped slipjoints slide out of my pocket. Haven't lost one yet but still a bit of an issue for me.
@@silencesir1987 I don't wear anything but jeans, not much falls out of the front pocket of those ! However traditional trouser pockets are self emptying !
UK knife laws are tyrannical. Nothing about them are common sense at all, just utter foolishness. Imagine the knives you could own and carry if you lived where there are common sense knife laws.
