Chewy, I love your videos man! I do have one word of caution though for many of your fans (including myself since I am still a white belt). If you are a White belt you probably shouldn't incorporate wrist locks into your submission sequences, they are not allowed in IBJJF Tournaments until blue belt level. Same goes for any leg locks other than a straight ankle lock. Many BJJ instructors wont allow someone, as a white belt, to practice leg locks or wrist locks at all. As an officer, I learned goose necks and other wrist locks as a form of control over someone I was arresting. I know how much they hurt and how quickly that pain compliance happens. That being said, before I started looking into IBJJF rules I attempted to use a wrist lock during sparring and earned myself a good talking to from my Professor about not using them.
@brandonbelew
@brandonbelew 5 лет назад
I'm a white belt and I use and love wrist locks. Why? I can do them in my no-gi tournaments, same with kneebars and toe holds. But at the same time you shouldn't not train something just because you can't do it in comp. Just don't use it in a competition if you can't. I think white belts are doing themselves a disservice by not training them until blue, you'll need them once you get that belt so you might as well learn them and how to defend them before you do.
@beefburito
@beefburito 5 лет назад
@@brandonbelew Train them, be aware of them, but maybe don't make them a big part of your game until they're legal if you plan on competing. I recently had a private with John Danaher who shares that opinion. He showed us a bunch of IBJJF legal foot attacks, most of which were legal at white belt, but the Estima lock isn't legal until brown. Most of us probably won't be able to use it for the better part of a decade (I'm a blue belt, there were also a bunch of white belts), but you want to be aware of them when they become legal so that you can just jump right into them, instead of taking a year to acclimate to them and work them into your game. I train kneebars, toe holds, and heel hooks regularly, I just don't make them the focus of my game. The key is communication, your training partner needs to know they're on the table. If you plan on using something they might not be expecting, a simple "Are you okay with wrist locks/knee bars/toe holds?" before rolling is all it takes.
@brandonbelew
@brandonbelew 5 лет назад
@@beefburito as a white belt the biggest part of my game is survival. I don't have anything that I make a part of my game specifically. I only wrist lock, toe hold, etc on people who like to play in the dark arts. But as I said in my previous post, I can use a bunch of that in tournaments in no-gi. I'm at 2.75 years as a white belt, so I compete at intermediate, soon advanced once I hit 3 years no gi. Some regional tournaments, AGF for example, allow me to knee bar, wrist lock, toe hold, bicep/calf slicers, etc at intermediate. Once I switch to advanced I can heel hook, knee reap, spinal submissions and neck cranks. I don't train for the IBJJF rule set since it's a 8 hour drive to any IBJJF tournament and I will rarely go.

I’d do wrist locks all day, they are practical to deescalate a situation. So keep training them, just be respectful to your training partners if you use this against them.

Hey Chewy just wanna thank you man. It’s my 4th day of BJJ and I spent hours watching your videos after each day. Today after tapping everyday I finally was the one making people tap from things I learned from you. They got upset being higher level white belts but I guess that’s why BJJ is a humbling sport. Good luck and I look forward to learning more from you, aka my second professor.
